WHAT YOUR SON/DAUGHTER CAN DO…Consider WHERE they learn:
Is their phone by their side? Is the computer integral to their study? Is this a suitable time and place?
Consider HOW they learn and study best:
Be dedicated and have an “I CAN” attitude Be prepared to stretch themselves to Aim Higher Ask questions and ask for help Take time to proof read work Use feedback as a dialogue Manage their TIME Create Revision Timetable Know their GOALAND…….
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “CAN’T” YOU JUST
“CANNOT DO IT YET”
BELIEVE YOU CAN AND YOU
WILL…
Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible
MINDSET Carol Dweck
FIXED MINDSET?I rely on the teacher to provide resources, ask questions, generate ideas and let me know how I am doing
I am fearful of making mistakesand give up easily when I am stuck
It is easier to act the fool or not show interest than actually try to work things out…I do not want to look stupid if I get it wrong.
I do sometimes think…..“I won’t ever be able to do that”!
GROWTH MINDSET? I ask questions, share
ideas, suggest solutions and evaluate my own and others work
I am not afraid to take risks and make mistakes
I do not give up when I am stuck, I like a challenge. Think “which bit can I not do YET?”
I like to reflect on how I have learnt and how I can continue to improve or do even better.
PREPARE EFFECTIVELY FOR THEIR INTERNAL EXAMINATIONS
(will take place in lessons and in exam halls)
Tips to help your son/daughter be successful in their study and examinations…
RESOURCES AVAILABLE… Frog Play on FrogOS – a games based revision system
helping students with revision, knowledge building, assessment and exam practice. This is now available on-the-go on any internet enabled device, even a tablet! The best bit is you can check in and see how much revision they have done. If you have any problems with accessing this please contact Mr Packard.
BBC Bitesize.
Apps including mind maps and concept map apps.
Revision Guides
WHAT PARENTS CAN DO… Pre learning and understanding vocabulary is a
key concept
Make it fun or a game
3 Stage System: Audio - Images - Notes
I went to the market and bought…
PictionaryTaboo
HOW PARENTS CAN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT… Have open discussions; we have been promoting concept
of “Conversations NOT Confrontations” Put key events and dates i.e. coursework deadlines,
revision sessions and exam dates, on the family calendar. Test their knowledge in a fun and interactive way. LAT Strategy (Learn Content, Apply to exam questions,
Timed Conditions) Proof read work Guide them to and discuss BTEC subject handbooks and
assignments (Year 10/11) Guide them to subject specific “Help” resources on FROG Remind them of the after school revision classes or
support sessions Don’t book holidays in term time
“Revision” is just the tip of the
iceberg…Getting the balance right.
LAT STRATEGY
Learn Content (Think HOW you will do this)
Apply to Exam Questions
Timed Conditions (get your family to say “see you in 15 minutes with Question 1, with the 10 mark answer completed”)

REVISION DAILY PLANNERFILL IN YOUR KNOWN COMMITMENTS PRIOR TO PLANNING YOUR WEEK’S REVISION E.G.
1. SUBJECT REVISION SESSIONS BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL, SPORT OR OTHER HOBBIES AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS (THAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE).
2. PLAN IN MEALS AND BREAKS
YOU WILL THEN KNOW THE TIME YOU HAVE TO PLAN:
1.YOUR ADDITIONAL REVISION, BY SUBJECT TOPIC. REMEMBER TO REVISE IN SMALL CHUNKS OVER TIME.2. EXAM PRACTICE IN TIMED CONDITIONS (ADD THIS INTO YOUR SCHEDULE AT THIS POINT).
FOR PERIOD 1-5 YOU CAN RECORD, AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHAT YOU FOCUSED ON IN THE LESSONS AND IN THE TUTORIAL SESSION SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU STILL NEED TO PREPARE REVISION RESOURCES FOR IN YOUR OWN TIME.
ALWAYS THINK ABOUT YOUR OTHER COMMITMENTS, AND CONSIDER YOUR PRIORITIES; IF YOUR FRIENDS ASK YOU TO GO OUT EVERY NIGHT… THINK….YOU MAY NEED TO SAY “I AM SORRY I CANNOT GO OUT TONIGHT I HAVE TO REVISE”.

Flash cards can be a big help in remembering important information. Why not try making some brightly coloured lists or even just writing down key words that you want to remember and putting them up in your room at home.
Try different colours for different
subjects/topics/keywords.
You can adapt the flash cards by putting a question on one side and the answer on the back. You can then ask your family and friends to test you at home and in the car.
FLASH CARDS
FLASHCARD CHALLENGES
1. Create a bank of question and answer cards.
2. In pairs (friend/friend or parent/carer and child) decide who is going first, ask your question
3. Your partner answers, if they cannot answer, coach and give tips but do not tell them the answer
4. Once they get the answer right, it is your turn to answer a question.
5. Repeat with new question cards.
IDEA: do it around the dining room table or in the car on a long journey/flight
POST IT NOTES AROUND THE HOUSE
REVISING WITH TECHNOLOGY You may learn best by
listening. Record your notes/key points
onto your mobile/ ipod/ ipad or video yourself teaching a topic so you can watch it again.
In the past some students have made raps to listen to.
Get different friends or members of your family to read different things on to the recording so that a different voice will jog different memories.
Mind Map Apps
An acronym is a word made up using the first letters of a series of other words or the first word of a series of sentences. For example, to remember the advantages of credit cards for a business studies question:
