Year 9 English Assessment Task The Horror Genre
Subject: English Year: 9 Task: #1 Due Date: Term 1, Week 11 Mark: /30 Weighting: 25% Assessment Mode: Imaginative Writing and Reflection
Outcomes EN5-1A responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure. EN5-8D questions, challenges and evaluates cultural assumptions in texts and their effects on meaning.
Task Description:
Write a 600-800 word short story based on the HORROR GENRE or SUBGENRE that you have studied in class and reflect on your composition. You MAY receive 4 lessons in class to work on this task.
Marking Criteria:
PART A. HORROR STORY
Your short story should:
1. Be an original piece of work (all your own words). 2. Include the language, characters, setting, context, imagery and symbols appropriate to the
HORROR GENRE/SUBGENRE in which you are writing. 3. Be submitted as a hardcopy (printing services are available in the library for a small fee). 4. Be between 600-800 words. 5. (OPTIONAL) You may choose to use one of the six images on the last three pages of this
assessment task as the setting for your story.
* Stories must be suitable for a PG audience. *
Do NOT include graphic violence or inappropriate content.
PART B. REFLECTION STATEMENT (for PART A Composition of Horror Short Story)
Use the Reflection Statement questions on the next page to write a reflection explaining how you have used the conventions of the horror genre/subgenre in your story (200 – 250 words in total).
Your reflection statement should:
1. Be between 200-250 words – use all of the space provided. 2. Be attached to your composition.
Submission / Late Policy
Students are expected to submit their assessment tasks during the period the class meets on the due date. Students submitting assessment tasks at the staff room should only submit these tasks to their teacher or a nominated representative from the faculty. If the task is collected by anyone else the student MUST ask for a signed submission receipt.
Students who wish to submit their assessment task in the due date but later than the class time MUST negotiate an alternative time with their class teacher. Late penalties will apply after this.
Year 7-10 will lose 10% of the final mark for every consecutive school day that the assessment task remains outstanding. This will occur for 3 consecutive school days. On the 4th day the student will receive zero for the task.
