Just as Mary responded, “Here am I,” to the angel Gabriel, we too are to respond to the gospel and say, “Yes,” to living into our faith, with changed hearts and lives. This is not as a theory to which we give assent, but a life lived in response to the gospel. When we live into our faith, reaching out to the lost and left out, and proclaim the Good News in both word and deed, then little by little we help turn the world upside down. When we side against the oppressor and speak up for the voiceless, we make the Kingdom proclaimed by Mary real to ourselves. It is not that we can change the whole world, but by living into the concern that Jesus taught us for the poor and the needy, we make the coming kingdom, the reign of God, real in our hearts. God Calls Us God calls us to come home for Christmas. God calls us to come back from all those places where we have settled for less than the fullness of life promised to us in Christ. God calls us back from all the ambitions and possessions we have pursued, thinking they would satisfy us. God calls us to let go of any bitterness and resitance to forgive that block the light of love from warming us…. God calls us to come home and to rest, to be embraced by one who loves us as we are. God offers us a place where we are fully known and also fully accepted. Mary Lou Redding

THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY Advent 4 - Preparing for Christmas

Call to Worship Leader: We are a people of Love. Let us share God’s love in word, action and thought. All: We are a people of Joy. May the joy of faith-filled living ever give us peace. Leader: We are a people of peace. The peace of God sustains and comforts. All: Let us give thanks to God for love, joy, peace and hope as we worship together this day. Opening Prayer Leader: O God, who loves us with a perfect love, we confess our failure to love you and to love other people. You gave us your very self in Jesus, yet we hesitate to give generously even of our possessions. Fill us with your love this Christmas that our lives may be a true reflection of Christ’s love for the world. Advent Candle - Lighting (Please Kneel or Sit) Leader 1: The celebration of Christ’s birth draws closer. Leader 2: Our Advent journey has taken us from the call in the wilderness to the wonder of God’s love, shown in the birth of a Holy Child. People: “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. Leader 1: “Immanuel,” God with us, is indeed Good News! Leader 2: God’s love is amazing. God’s love is life-giving! People: “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. Leader 1: We light the first candle, reminding us of the way of hope. (Light the Isaiah candle). Leader 2: We light the second candle, reminding us of God’s way of peace. (Light the candle for John the Baptist).

Leader 1: We light the third candle, reminding us of God’s way of joy. (Light the Joseph candle). Leader 2: We light the fourth candle reminding us of God’s way of love. (Light the Mary candle) People: “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. Leader 1: May the love and light of this holy time be ever with us. Leader 2: Let us sing of Advent hope, peace, joy and love. Sung Response All: Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; set your minds on things eternal, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descending comes our homage to command. King of kings, yet born of Mary, once upon the earth he stood; Lord of lords we now perceive him in his body and his blood - he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven stream before him on the way; as the Light of light descending from the realms of endless day vanquishes the power of evil, clears the gloom of hell away. At his feet the six-winged seraphs, cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces in his presence as with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord most high!
