Kerr Cup regattaHistory and OriginThe Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew’s team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931.
The winners of the men’s varsity eight race will be awarded the Kerr Cup. The winners of the women’s varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup named in honor of Dr. Kerr’s wife. Lela H. Kerr Cup Champions

2010The 2010 Henley Women’s Regatta marked the first time coach Paul Savell took a Drexel team to compete in the historic regatta in England. The Dragons varsity eight boat shocked the rowing world, winning the Sports Coun-cil Cup.

Randall Burkert was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team. Burkert was the recipient of the Thomas Greene Award as Drexel’s Outstanding Graduating Athlete in 1982. As a senior, he led the team win scoring with 374 points and helped guide the Dragons to a school-record 19 victories. He was also named a Second Team All-East Conference Coast pick and a Region II Academic All-American.
Burkert, a co-captain as both a junior and senior, was also awarded the General Greene Award as Drexel’s Outstanding Sophomore Athlete. He was the ECC Rookie of the Year as a freshman and became just the sixth Dragon to score more than 1,000 career points.
Dr. Thomas Kerr Induction Class of 1987 (Men’s Crew)
Dr. Thomas Kerr was a key figure in the Drexel Crew team reaching varsity status. He coached the Bachelors Barge Club and after two years, his team of Drexel students was granted club status for two years before becoming a varsity sport in 1959. Kerr obtained shells, oars, equipment, secured a boathouse and coached the team until 1969. From 1952 until 1969 he was also the team physician and the university surgeon as well.
Kerr rowed at Syracuse and was the freshman coach while attending medical school. He spent 39 months in the U.S. Medical Corps as a surgeon. In 1974 he received the Syracuse University Letterman of Distinction Award. Kerr rowed for the Penn Ath-letic Club and was National and Canadian Champion in the eight and four-man compe-titions. He rowed in the 1932 Olympics and finished fourth in the four. Kerr was also a referee at nine world rowing championships including the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. The Kerr Cup Regatta held on the Schuylkill each spring is named in his honor.
Dr. Paul Mansfield Class of 1979Induction Class of 1987 (Men’s Crew, Men’s Swimming and Diving)
Paul Mansfield swam for four seasons at Drexel and served as a captain or co-captain in three of his four years in University City. He was the East Coast Conference cham-pion in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke in 1777, 1978 and 1979. He was voted the outstanding swimmer in the ECC in 1979, when he was also a first-place finisher in the 200-yard individual medley. Mansfield represented Drexel in four-straight years (1976-79) in the Eastern Seaboard Swimming championships and was an NCAA Champion-ship participant in 1977. Mansfield received both the Major Greene Award (1977) and the Lt. Greene Award (1979).
In addition to his accomplishments in the pool, Mansfield also earned a letter in crew and was a finalist in the pairs event at the Dad Vail Regatta. After Drexel, Mansfield went on to graduate from Jefferson University Medical School in 1983.
