Hello, Year 4! I hope you are all well and enjoying this time with your family! I can see from Times Tables Rockstars lots of you have been competing against each other to get the fastest score! We are all SO impressed with how hard you are working at home. This week it has been very special for Miss Rowe and Mrs Guy who celebrated their birthdays! They both turned 22 :) My family welcomed a new addition this week; my niece was born on Tuesday in Newcastle and is a small giant weighing in at 10 lbs. She is called Charlotte. English

In English we will look at joining short sentences to make interesting compound sentences. We will explore Cogston House - would you go inside? Finally your creative minds can fly as you explore The Girl and the Dragon. Where have they been? What are they looking at? It’s all up to you!

Maths

In maths,we will be looking at multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 with some decimal work, too. Also, continue to practise your times tables. Remember you can use the different areas of Times Table Rock Stars, such as the Studio where there is a leader board, Slamrock where you can challenge each other and Arena where you can play against your friends. Any games played between 10 am and midday will count in your class score in our daily Year 4 ‘battle.’ Good luck!

In geography, we are looking at how bays and headlands are formed. There is a link to a video about bays and a worksheet to complete or you can write down what you have learnt in your jotter.

In art, see if you can create an origami rabbit or cat by following the instructions. Remember to add some features once you have completed this.

Enjoy being active and creative whilst exploring the P.E. activities.

Multiplying by 10 and 100In the place value system, as you move left, each column is 10 times bigger in value. To multiply by ten we move our numbers one column to the left. It is easy to remember as 10 has 1 zero, so we jump once. To multiply by 100 we move our numbers 2 columns to the left. We can remember this as 100 has 2 zeros, so 2 jumps. On the next page you will find some examples to try.

Dividing by 10 and100https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbPLPUqwhZ4

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z36tyrd/articles/z2fkwxsIn the place value system, as you move right, each column is 10 times smaller in value. To divide by ten we move our numbers one column to the right. It is easy to remember as 10 has 1 zero, so we jump once. To divide by 100 we move our numbers 2 columns to the right. We can remember this as 100 has 2 zeros, so 2 jumps. On the next page you will find some examples to to try.

Example 1

5430 ÷ 10 =

Example 2

Using x10 facts to calculate x5If we look at our 2 x table, we know that we just need to double the answer to get the 4 x table. Multiplying (x2 x2) is the same as (x4)

To calculate x5 we can x 10, then halve the amount. (x5) is the same as (x 10, ÷ 2)

E.g. 68 x 5 =

First we calculate 68 x 10 = 680

Then we halve it 680 ÷ 2 = 340

So: 68 x 5=340

Use the x10, divide by 2 strategy to calculate:

1. 14 x 5 =2. 88 x 5 =3. 20 x 5 =4. 24 x 5 =5. 66 x 5 =6. 72 x 5 =7. 800 x 5 =8. 340 x 5 =9. 450 x 5 =

10. 900 x 5 =

Literacy Activity One

Making Compound SentencesWhen you are writing, it would be strange to only use short, simple sentences. Instead, try making some compound sentences. Two simple sentences can be joined together with a conjunction to make a compound sentence. For example: ‘I do not like eating meat.’ is a simple sentence. ‘I love vegetables.’ is also a simple sentence.

By putting the two sentences together and joining them with a conjunction, we can make a much more interesting compound sentence.‘I do not like eating meat’ + but + ‘I love vegetables.’ I do not like eating meat, but I love vegetables.’

Remember, commas are not conjunctions and they should never be used to join two sentences together. (Commas are not sticky, so you can’t use them to stick information together!)

NOW TRY THIS

Join the following sentences together to make compound sentences. Choose the most suitable conjunction from the list below. Use each conjunction once only.

1. I enjoy reading. I don’t enjoy cooking.

2. Ben is thoughtful. He always plays with me when I’m lonely.

3. Kate walked home from school slowly. She was tired.

4. Babies cry all of the time. They can get some attention from their mum.

5. Year Five is a hard working class. All of the children want to do well at school.

6. I can use simple sentences in my writing. I can use compound ones to make it more interesting.

● Where are the girl and the dragon? What can they see from this place? What are they looking at?

● Why are they here?● Are they friends? Does the girl own the

dragon as a pet? Or does the dragon own the girl as its pet?

● What species of dragon do you think it is? Is it friendly?

● Does anyone else know that they’re up here? What might other people say about their friendship?

● Give this picture a new title. Explain your choices and persuade others that yours is the best title.

How are bays formed? ● The process of coastal erosion

● Hydraulic action - destructive waves erode the soft rock along the coastlines

● Abrasion - stones and pebbles are thrown at the coastline by waves
