Our stories and passions unite us. In 2009, the power of BCM’s community and its dedication to urban teens guided our organization through a milestone year. In this annual review we celebrate the young people we serve by sharing powerful stories of growth and learning. Among the voices you will hear are teens whose lives have changed through our programs, volunteers who selflessly give time and talent to nurture our young people, and steadfast donors who make a difference in the world: one BCM teen at a time.

The commitment of BCM supporters and the experience of its day-to-day team made it possible in 2009 for BCM to increase programs and impact more young people than ever before. With your help, we:• Increased teen program days (+39%) while decreasing costs• Served more than 600 individual teens through outdoor experiences and employment opportunities• Connected almost 450 adult mentors with urban teenagers• Delivered programs with 24 partner agencies in 9 cities across the United States• Changed the lives of under-resourced teens

These milestones in our 20-year history are a testament to everyone who selflessly supports BCM and its mission.

Continued and generous support from our outdoor indus-try partners provided many of the resources needed to grow our program in the Pacific Northwest. Support from the Stewardship Council gave BCM the opportunity to launch the Urban Family Gateway program in northern California.

In 2009, while BCM’s Summit for Someone fundraising event continued to be our largest income source, we made good progress on establishing healthy alternative revenue streams and partnerships, including:• Developing the framework for a robust individual giving program• Securing support in new ways, like our work with the Stewardship Council• Deepening our relationships with leaders in the outdoor industry• Expanding to new circles and opportunities with leadership from our Board of Directors

BCM was able to do more with less in 2009. The economic downturn motivated our team to increase program efficiency. We evaluated every expense in the organization, and while our efforts will be continuous, the team sig-nificantly reduced expenses without sacrificing the quality of our program. We continue to receive excellent results in our quantitative analysis of program effectiveness using the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets profile.

Each of BCM’s four regional operations -- Colorado, California, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest -- is sup-ported by the headquarters team, and led by regional program managers responsible for the direction and operation of their BCM program. Each region delivers three types of programs: Go, Relate, and Goals. Through these pro-grams, urban teens are introduced to BCM, participate in a weeklong journey of learning, and return again as an em-ployee and/or on alumni events. Our belief: through extending our opportunities to touch teens’ lives, we are able to serve them more effectively. In addition to our regular programs, BCM delivers two special year-round programs in California: Male Involvement Project (MIP) and Urban Family Gateway.

BCM thrived in 2009 because of our donors and Summit for Someone climbers who gave of their time and money, and our board members who shared their leadership and commitment. We’re eager to share their voices, as well as those of the young people impacted by our programs. Thank you.

Hi my name is Hajia and I am from Kenya, I was originally born in Somalia. My family is So-mali Bantu and we were thought of as the lower class so my parents left the country for a better life for their kids. After many stops we settled in a Kenyan Refugee Camp. After waiting 12 years in Kenya and a long interview process, my family arrived in the US on March 24th 2005.

When Ms. MK from Mercy Housing walked up to me and said that there was a trip coming up in the summer with Big City Mountaineers, I remember getting excited. I wanted to go to the mountains and do something I had never experienced before. Since I had never been to the mountains I didn’t know much about the mountains but I had seen a lot of movies and

seen people get hurt in the outdoors so that worried me. And I also thought that walking so much every day with heavy backpacks was going to be a problem, but I didn’t let that worry me or keep me up at night.

Then finally the day came. Being outside was great. What made it so great were the people. I enjoyed making new friends with the Burmese girls. We would all sing together in our tents at night and laugh a lot. I felt like I was no different than any of them when I was in nature. I also enjoyed the days I got to lead the group on our hikes and we all had to work together to get to where we needed to go. The woods and the nature were just amazing, I heard different sounds then I had ever heard before, no cars or buses, and the stars were incredible there were so many. I felt like I belonged there, it felt right waking up every morning with the sounds of the animals. It also felt like being back home in Kenya, you would see the stars that you would see in the mountains and you could drink water out of the stream.

The opportunity that Big City Mountaineers gave me was one of the greatest gifts, not only because we could be in nature but it was more, it was the adults that were with us Katie, Chris-ty, Amanda, and Ms. MK, these people were interested in the stories that I had to tell. These people that I had never met before believed in me, and if they believed in me and felt like I could accomplish this trip, than it made me think I can do this. They volunteer and give a part of their life, but I don’t think they understand what it does for us. They didn’t just guide us up the mountain they were also there to share and give us these amazing gifts.

Once I came back from that trip I realized my potential. My parents never got to go to high school, so I want to graduate from high school and go to college. Because people have said that I couldn’t accomplish this, I want to finish school and I want people to look up and see that I reached my goal.

I can never give back to Big City Mountaineers what they have given me. I am very grateful that the adults on the trip believed in me. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story.

Big City Mountaineers isdevoted to providing life-enhancing experiences to under-resourced urban teens. At the core of BCM’s programs is a weeklong wilderness expedition cou-pling urban teens with adult mentors as they journey through a curriculum of learning and self-discovery followed by periods of reflection. One-to-one men-toring and coaching by committed and passionate adults from diverse backgrounds brings a richness of personalities and experiences to BCM expedi-tions typically not found in wilderness-based youth development programs, providing BCM teens with a unique opportunity for relationship building and growth. In addition to our “core” wilderness expedi-tion, BCM provides one-day activities before and after the expedition to strengthen our engagement with teens. Successful and highly motivated teens are offered employment opportunities to support their continued partnership with BCM.

Big City Mountaineers believes strongly that learn-ing should not exist in vacuums, and for that reason, BCM partners with youth agen-cies that focus on teens from socially or economically challenged backgrounds. By collaborating with agencies serving teens year-round, BCM is simultaneously enrich-ing the teens’ daily engagement with their youth agencies while enabling the learning from their BCM expedition to become meaningful in their daily lives.

In 2010 BCM looks forward to closer partnerships with high schools, youth orga-nizations (locally and at the national level), and outdoor industry associations to drive even greater involvement and awareness of our programs for teens.

Big City Mountaineers exists through the commitment of volunteers, funders, donors, Summit for Someone climbers, staff, and, of course, the courage of young people. Hundreds of adults annually take a week from their “normal” lives, to live in dirt, eat dehydrated foods, and live shower-less to provide guidance in the wilder-ness. We are grateful for everyone who supports making a difference in a teen’s life.

Program GoalsThe goal of Big City Mountaineers, a 501c(3) non-profit, is to provide urban teenage youth with challenging, safe outdoor experiences designed to build self-esteem and positively impact their beliefs about themselves and their relationship with others.

GO• Single-day activities introducing teens to Big City Mountaineers and the outdoors.

RELATE• Weeklong wilderness expeditions. Single-gender, one-to-one mentoring, designed to inspire and motivate personal growth.

SOCIAL COMPETENCy INCLUDES: » Planning and Decision Making Young person knows how to plan ahead and make choices.» Interpersonal Competence Young person has empathy, sensitivity, and friendship skills.» Cultural Competence Young person has knowledge of and comfort with people of different cultural/racial/ethnic backgrounds.» Resistance Skills Young person can resist negative peer pressure and danger-ous situations.» Peaceful Conflict Resolution Young person seeks to resolve conflict nonviolently.

Big City Mountaineers takes the impact of its programs seriously. For 5 years BCM has employed the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets Profile to measure the effectiveness of BCM expeditions. The Search Institute has identified building blocks of healthy development—known as Developmental Assets—that help young adults grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. Internal Assets are a young person’s own commitments, values, and competencies while external assets reference support systems and how young adults view responsibility. Each teen’s asset profile is a strong predictor of future success (i.e. reduction in violence, drug use, likeliness to stay in school).

Over the last three years Big City Mountaineers’ teens have consistently shown significant improvement in the “Social Competency” category. This means BCM programs influence not only how young adults make choices but how a young person builds future relationships.

6

In April 2009, BCM for the first time extended programming to not only teens, but to their adult parental figures, in hopes of enhancing and transforming the lives of entire families through outdoor activities.

One year and 73 weekend outings later, the Urban Family Gateway program served exactly 800 youth and adults through activities from hiking to indoor rock climbing to sea kayaking. Although it often felt like a herculean effort and I was giving more energy than I had to spare, running the program was like a gift to me. I saw the impact it had on hundreds of local families. The outings offered families a break from the normal routine, a healthy challenge, and priceless happy moments shared with loved ones. I am honored to have spent so much time with the families who participated; in it, I found my own personal sense of family within the community. I am blessed to have shared my love of the outdoors with these people and I hope they continue to share that love with each other.

We are excited to give this year’s award to Pat Callahan. Pat embodies the spirit of Skip Yowell through exceptional service and commitment to helping Big City Moun-taineers fulfill its mission of enhancing the lives of under-resourced teens.

“There’s no place I’d rather be,” Pat says about his BCM trips. Pat has made this apparent over the past 10 years through his relent-less enthusiasm for BCM, our program and the teens

we serve. He became involved with BCM in 1999 by volunteering once a week in our Evergreen office doing whatever needed to be done: gear repairs, washing sleep-ing bags, mailings, etc. That summer, he went out as an adult volunteer on one of our trips, and after that he was hooked! He has since been on 6 more BCM trips, from the Bound-ary Waters Canoe Area to Montana to Colorado, and he also volunteers his time in the “front-country.” Even after

10 years, seven trips, and 35 teens, Pat claims, “I can look back at each trip and remember every kid.”

Pat, now retired and living in Evergreen, CO, spent 25 years in the Parks and Recreation Department, and is most proud of his time spent as the head of YMCA Guides and Princesses in Raleigh, North Carolina with the YMCA of the Triangle. After his most recent BCM trip, he began mentoring one of the teens formally through Denver Kids. He also recently joined the BCM Regional Advisory Board.

In a recent interview with Pat, his endless stream of stories about his BCM experiences almost ran out the batteries on the video camera! He splits his trips into two parts – the funny and the emotional. He recalls one funny story about a teen catching his first fish in the BWCA. The teen started screaming because he thought

it was a monster! As for the emotional, he says that the celebration dinner is always the best part

where groups really come together. There are often tears as teens express how they

don’t want to go home. The energy and enthusiasm for

BCM that Pat exudes in the front-country is nothing compared to what happens out on the trail. Through head-dunking contests, teaching obscure blues songs, and “dancing” to

his own “rap” of the Beastie Boys, Pat keeps each of his groups smiling.

2009 Skip yowell VolunteerAward: Pat Callahan

“He loves [the teens] and they

love him. He commands respect naturally, whilst

being gentle, caring and effective.”

- David Curtis,Team Leader

About the Skip yowell AwardBCM wants to acknowledge that we would not exist without all of the dedicated volunteers we have had over the years. Volunteers are such an important part of our organization that in 2008 we decided to begin recognizing one volunteer a year with an award called the Skip Yowell award. Skip Yowell is the co-founder of JanSport and is one of BCM’s board members. Skip Yowell has been an integral part of Big City Mountaineers’ history and without his continued support (especially in the early years) BCM might not have grown into what it is today. JanSport is a proud sponsor of this award.

“Big City Mountaineers is a great organization which I tremendously respect. Role models and mentors were a big part of my youth.

I look back on my teen years and realize they made a positive difference that helped shape me as an individual. The BCM ex-perience provides positive role modeling and a challenging experience which is often absent in an urban youth’s environment. I keep volunteering because I know BCM is providing the same experiences that helped me. The trips are rewarding and I have made some great friendships over the years. I envision being part of a BCM trip when I am 70 years old!”

My friend Skip Yowell at JanSport suggested I look into working with BCM when I left his com-pany some time ago. BCM had a Boundary Waters program in northern Minnesota that was just beginning.

I had been paddling in the Boundary Waters since I was 14 years old. The park has been an important part of my outdoor life and I looked forward to sharing it.

The first BCM trip was cathartic for me. I saw the change in the teens over the 8 days that we shared our lives together. This is a formula that works and I decided after 3 more BCM expeditions to apply for a board seat.

I serve on the board because I believe that our work makes a differ-ence, one kid at a time. We need to spread the word and the impor-tant work the BCM team is doing for city teenagers: giving them an entirely new perspective is transformative for them and it has been for me as well. I don’t have children of my own and this has been my way of making a positive contribution to a younger generation.

More than that, serving on the board has given me a new sense of purpose in my life. A sense of giving back, and helping young people see a totally different point of view.

I hope you choose to join me in this journey. The work we do at BCM is important and unique. We can change lives one trip at a time and one kid at a time.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been involved with Big City Mountaineers and Summit for Someone over the past 10 or so years as a volunteer, donor, trip leader, and climber. Why do I volunteer with BCM? Quite simply, because I can think of no better program that has such a direct and tan-gible positive impact of the lives of young people who need it most. Every trip I have participated in with BCM is unique; each with its own challenges and victories but the one constant throughout is seeing the transformation that occurs in each of the teens. Will a BCM trip solve all the problems these teens face? No, of course not. But what I do believe and have seen firsthand is that the change in environ-ment that a BCM trip offers opens a window of opportunity in the memory of these fine young people, a window that can be filled with the example of positive adult role models, the chance to overcome adversity, and a realization that there is a bigger, brighter world of opportunity beyond the day to day challenges they normally face. I believe that a BCM trip gives them experiences to draw upon to

help overcome those challenges and find success in life. Volunteering with BCM has given me a unique opportu-nity to see exactly how my dollars are put to work, both on the trail and off. The benefits of my donations on the trail are easy to see. What has become just as apparent

to me from volunteering is just how far those dollars reach due to the efforts of the talented and hard

working BCM staff. I know my donations are in good hands and will go the farthest to-wards benefiting the teens that participate in these life changing trips.

For the past three years, I have mentored at-risk teen girls from Oak-land and San Leandro, California, as a Team Leader for Big City Moun-taineers. Each trip, I meet a group of apprehensive young women in the city context they have know their whole lives, and together, we travel to Yo-semite, Kings Canyon, or the Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. I teach them the basics of outdoor travel and safety while they worry about sleeping in a tent for the first time – in bear country. We pack our backpacks, leaving all but the essentials behind, and we walk 20 to 30 miles into the wilderness.

BCM trips offer teens a chance to explore a totally new environment, to soak up the beauty of natural spaces with few human influences. But more, they offer troubled teenagers a chance to see themselves in a new light. Hik-ing at 9,000 ft. elevation with a 45-lb pack on your back is a challenge for anybody! These girls learn that they can survive for a week without mirrors or makeup – freed from the drama of high school life – and have a chance to discover their inner beauty

and strength. For some, it is their first time away from home. For some, it is their first opportunity to question the world they take for granted. In 2008, 15-year-old Julie amazed me while we were cooking dinner in the backcountry when she observed, “It’s so much easier to be happy when life is simple like this.”

This year, I decided to put myself in my girls’ shoes. Each and every trip, I ask a group of young women to face daunting new challenges, to push themselves beyond what they feel emotionally and physically capable of, and to climb, step by step, to new heights. In June, I will participate in a Summit For Someone climb, pushing myself beyond my comfort and experience in honor of all the amazing young women who have ventured into the wilderness with me.
