Inspired by a film about Uganda titled "Invisible Children," DHS students formed the African Service project and raised thou-sands for the impoverished country. Students involved in the African Service Project: Back row: Grace Kelso, Zach Runci, Samantha Sinclair, teacher Susan Sullivan, Annie White and Adrienne White. Front row: Austin Waltz and Jackie Trevisani.

From Duxbury to Uganda

DHS senior Alex McCaffrey designed a t-shirt that was sold to raise money for the African Service Project.

Chris Blake takes a photo with a young child at an orphanage in the Ugandan village of Kyetume. Blake helped raise funds from Duxbury residents to build a dorm at the orphanage.

Blake with Rebecca Richards, Kelsey Jordan and Dan Hall. All four worked in Uganda with the Uganda Rural Fund – Jordan and Richards teaching AIDS aware-ness and other things, and Blake and Hall with the orphanage.

Animal sightings

PUPPY LOVE: Jaime and Alex Hansman brought their cockapoo Tucker to the library’s pet show in August.

BACK TO THE SEA: A harbor seal, who had ventured out of the water to sun himself on the rocks on Duxbury Beach, heads back into the waves on Thursday. The seal seemed to have difficulty making his way down the beach but eventually returned to the water.

PRAYERS FOR PAWS: The blessing

of the animals was a family affair for the

Tripp family. Here Rev. Roy, Liz and

Preston Tripp gather around the family

dog, Paige.

Snowy the cockatoo, shown here at the pet show with her owner Leigh Brandenburg, likes to cuddle with her own-ers – an unusual trait in a bird!

Olivia Nichols and her dog, Sophie attended

the Folk and Fur Fest in September. Olivia asked

her friends to give her donations for the Standish

Humane Society instead of birthday gifts and she

brought the donations and a gift basket to the Walk.

Crashes & CrimePart of the job that is covering community news is cov-

ering the news that's not so good, like accidents, fires, and crime. These photos should serve as a remind-

er that living in Duxbury isn't without risks, and should also highlight the stellar job the town police and fire departments do keeping us all safe and sound.

SANDY SPILL: A rollover accident on Route 3 on Feb. 20 snarled

traffic as emergency crews worked to clean up the scene. A 10-wheeler dump truck carrying

sand had slid onto its side, spill-ing its load over the highway. No

one was injured, and the road was cleared in a few hours.

CAR WASH: Duxbury firefighters look on as an SUV is towed from the water off Bay Road. Police say the driver was sending a text message when he ran off the road and got his car stuck in an inlet. The driver was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

KNOCK NEXT TIME: Luckily, no one was hurt in this July accident out on the Gurnet.

MANHUNT: A police K9 unit searched a driveway near a home off Tremont Street in September, looking for a burglary suspect. Police caught one man after an exhaustive search involving Duxbury, Kingston and State Police, but another was not found.

A Civil War reenactment group fired a volley of blanks, much to the delight of the crowd. As the theme was “Our American Heritage,” several historical marching groups participated in the parade.

The float created by the Cornerstone Lodge won second place in the maxi float category.

Mariah MacFarlane and Rita Thompson belted out rock n’ roll tunes from a revolving stage on the DHS Drama Club’s float.
