Cottonisthemostwidelyusednaturalfiberintheworld.Morethan250millionpeopleacrosstheworlddependoncottoncultivationandprocessingfortheirlivelihoodsincludingmillionsofsmallholderfarmersandtheirfamilies.Owingtoalargenumberofpeopleemployedinthecottonsector,itisoneoftheworld’smostimportantfibersandcashcrops.
However,thecropisoneofthemostwaterintensiveandaccountsforasubstantialportionofpesticideuse.Growingcottonutilizesapproximately45%ofthetotalpesticideuseinIndia*,oneoftheworld’slargestcottonproducers.TheIDHCottonProgramisworkingtowardsidentifyingandimplementingapproachestoreducecotton’snegativeenvironmentalandsocioeconomicimpacts.
IDHinvestsinandsupportstheBetterCottonInitiative(BCI),anindependentstandardbasedonagronomic,environmental,andsocialcriteriatocreatelong-termchange.IDHisastrategicpartnertotheBetterCottonGrowthandInnovationFund(BetterCottonGIFortheFund),aglobalprogramdesignedtosupporttheBCIinitsgoalofreachingfivemillionfarmersinkeycotton-producingcountriesandhaveBetterCottonaccountfor30%ofglobalcottonproductionby2020.IDHplaysmultiplerolesintheBetterCottonGIFasstrategicpartnerandfundmanager,funder,andpartnerfordeliveringinnovationswithintheFund.TheFundinvestsinfarmertrainingandinnovationsforscaledsupplycreation.
TheIDHcottonprogramsaddressvitalsustainabilityissuessuchaspesticideuse,waterefficiency,andworkingconditionsincludingchildlabor,genderinequities,andpovertyincottonfarming,whichalignwiththeUNAgendaforSustainableDevelopment.
Smallholderfarmers,accountingforapproximately99%oftheworld’scottonfarmers,faceseveralsustainabilitychallenges.Changesintheseasonalweatherpatternsandothereffectsofclimatechangesaremakingsmallholdersincreasinglyvulnerable,impactingagriculturalproductivityandtheirhealthandwell-being.
Introduction Tothisend,IDHhaspilotedclimateresilienceprogramsinMozambiqueandMaharashtra,India.IntheMozambiqueClimateResilienceProgram,IDHisworkingwithfourprivatesectorpartnerstoincreasefarmers’resilienceagainstextremeconditionsandpovertybyemployingacoordinatedapproachtoprovidefarmerswithdiversifiedincome,improvedfoodintake,andtrainingonsustainableagricultureproduction.
TheMaharashtraCottonWaterPlatform(MCWP)wasformedin2015tosupportresiliencyofsmallholdercottonfarmersinthestate.Co-convenedbyIDH,undertheguidanceandleadershipoftheDepartmentofAgriculture,theplatformhasbroughttogether40+representativesfromthepublicsector,globalandlocalcottonsupply-chainactors,financialinstitutions,andcivilsocietytodeliverinnovativesolutionstoimprovewateruseefficiencyandincreasetheincomeofthecotton-farmingcommunitiesinMaharashtra.
Genderdiscriminationremainsoneofthegreatestchallengesinthesector.Hence,withinitsexitingprograms,IDHhasstrengtheneditsworkongendermainstreaming.
Womenplaycrucialrolesinthecottonsectorbuttheircontributiontothesectorisnotfrequentlyacknowledged.Womenfarmerstendtobelessintegratedintothecottonvaluechainsandaremostlyinvolvedinlabor-intensiveworkincottonproducingandharvestingstages.Theyhavelessexposuretothetechnicalknowledgeofcottoncultivation.Despitetheirdominantroleinfarming,womenhaveadisproportionatelydiminishedroleinlandownershipanddecision-making.Womenthereforeremainonthefringesofsocialandeconomicdevelopmentandfacedifficultiesinaccessingtheresources,credit,market,extensionservices,etc.
Toraiseawareness,IDHorganizedgendersensitizationtrainingsforthefield-levelstaffacrossitscommodityprogramsinIndiatoimprovegenderequalityandempowermentwithinitsprogram.

BasilCommoditiesisanIPassociatedwiththeBetterCottonProgramsince2015.Inthe2018-19season,itworkedin175villageswith45,520farmersintheAmreli,Botad,BhavnagarandRajkotdistrictsofGujarat.Thisregioninthestateisdealingwithseveralchallengesincludingexcessiveuseofchemicalfertilizersandpesticidesbythefarmers,heavypestattacks(e.g.,pinkbollworm),andunevenrainfall.
Tomeetsomeofthesechallenges,BasilCommoditiesistrainingcottonfarmersinitsprojectareaongoodagriculturalpractices,useoffertilizersandpesticidesaspertherequirement,useofnon-chemicalmethodsforpestcontrol,dripirrigation,alternatefurrowirrigation,andintercropping.Initsfouryearofengagementwiththefarmers,theIPhassuccessfullytransitionedthefarmersintheprogramtowardsresponsibleuseofagrochemicals,cultivatingborderandtrapcrops,intercropping,lowerspacingbetweencrops,andalternatefurrowirrigation.
SpeakingabouttheassociationwiththeGIF,VishalPatel–ManagingDirector,BasilCommodities–says,“WiththesupportofGIF,wehavebeenabletoscaleuptheprojectandreach45,500farmersinfouryears.OperationalsupportfromtheGIFteamisalsohelpingusinrunningthisprojectsuccessfully.”

SongziisanIPforBetterCottonGIFinChina.IthasbeenassociatedwiththeBetterCottonprogramsince2015andiscurrentlyworkingwith45,908cottonfarmersintheHubeiprovinceofChina.Thecottongrowersintheregionconstantlydealwiththehighercostofgrowingcottonforcomparativelylowerrevenue.Mechanizationatfarmlevelandabilitytofightdiseasesamongthefarmers’cropislow.Thefarmersarealsousingpesticidesandfertilizersexcessively,leadingtosoilcontamination.
Tomeetthesechallenges,Songzifacilitatesthesaleofcottontomotivatefarmers.Theysuggestfertilizerstothefarmersbasedonsoiltestingandarepromotingorganicfertilizersandintegratingpestmanagementtechniques.Thishashelpeddecreasetheconsumptionoffertilizersandpesticidesandreducetheinputcostforthefarmer.
Songzidemonstratesdirectplantingtechniquestothefarmers,whichhasincreasedthelevelofmechanizationandsimplifiedcottonproductionforthefarmers.Theareaunderdirectplantingofcottonisexpandingeachyear.Asof2018,cottonplantinghadreached10,000acresundertheprojectintotal.
MynameisRameshbhaiPopatbhaiShekhandIamaBetterCottonfarmerfromBotad,Gujaratforthelastfouryears.Ihavebeengrowingcottonforalongtime.Mycottonyield,overthepastfewyears,wasgettingimpactedduetoheavypestattacksandunevenrainfall.Iincreasedtheuseofagrochemicalstogethigheryield.Whileitdidnothaveanyimpactontheyield,itresultedinhighercostofcultivationforme.WhentheBetterCottonprojectofficialcametoourvillageforthefirsttimeandexplainedtheproject,Ifeltthatjoiningwouldbenefitmeascottonisourmaincrop.
Beforejoiningtheproject,Iwasnotawareofgoodcottonfarmingpracticesandusedtofollowotherfarmersandtraditionalpractices.ByadoptingpracticesrecommendedinBCItraining,mycostofcultivationhasreduced.Ihavealsobeenabletoreducemywaterusagethroughdripirrigation.Iamalsonowdoinglow-spacingfarming,whichhasledtoanincreaseinproduction.Intercroppinghasalsohelpedmeingettingadditionalincomeandreducingweedingissuesinthefarm.
Reducedcostofcultivationandadditionalincomehasincreasedmyprofitability.Iamnowabletosavemoremoneyandprovidegoodeducationtomychildrenfortheirbetterfuture.
MynameisYuandingZhaandIama46-yearoldBetterCottonfarmerfromHubeiprovince.IbecameassociatedwiththeBetterCottonprogramaftertheleaderofourvillagecommissionedhostingameetingandexplainingtheprogram.Irealizedthiswouldbebeneficialforfarmersandtheenvironmentandwouldalsohelpimprovemysaleofcotton.So,Iparticipatedinthetrainingsgivenundertheprojectonwatermanagement,environmentprotection,maintainingbio-diversity,andresponsibleuseofagrochemicals.
Apartfromtrainings,wegetinformationalmaterialstolearnmoreaboutBetterCotton.Theprojectstaffalsocomesregularlytothevillagetohelpusindecidingtheformulatedfertilizersbasedonsoiltesting.Wewerealsoadvisedtostopburningcottonstrawandtoputitbackinthesoil.
OnbecomingaBetterCottonfarmer,Ihavebeenabletoreducetheconsumptionofpesticidesandfertilizersatmyfieldby5-30%.Whiletherevenuehasbeenthesameforme,thelowerinputcosthashelpedmeimprovemyprofitmargins.

In2017-18,IDHlaunchedanInnovationFrameworkwithintheFundtosupportthemainstreaming,impact,andscaleofBCIgloballyaswellastoservetoattractnewcontributorstotheBetterCottonGIF.
TheFrameworkprovidesaprocesstohelpBCIandIDHidentify,select,andinvestininnovativeopportunitiesthatsupportthelonger-termBCIgoals.

TheNongjibaoappservestoprovidefarmerswithaccesstoinformationandknowledgeonthelatestagriculturalscienceandtechnology.Additionally,itservesasameanstoreceiveimmediateon-demandagriculturalsupportfromconnectedagronomistsandenablesacommunityofonlineuserstosharebestpracticesandlessonslearnedwithoneanother.
First Pilot Year
Inthisfirstpilotyear,thefocushasbeenuploadingallBCItrainingmaterialandmultimediaresourcesontotheappplatformandworkingtogetherwithNongxiCooperative,basedinShandong,totrainthefirstsetofBCIusersonessentialdigitalliteracytoaccessandnavigatetheappandshareinformation.
Therearecurrently344totalregistredusersincludingIPmanagementstaff,PUmanagers,FFs,leadfarmers,andfarmers.BetweenJanuaryandMarch2019,Nongxiistraininganadditional9,000farmers.
Inthenextphaseofthispilot,NongxiwillbeginintegratingtheappintoBCItrainingstomovetowardsstandardizingandembeddingtheappintodailyoperations.

1. IntroductionThe importance of climate resilience in Mozambique
Mozambique’sagriculturalsectoraccountsfor22%ofthenationalGrossDomesticProduct(GDP).DuetoMozambique’sgeographicpositionandpredominantdependenceuponrain-fedagriculture,smallholdersareincreasinglybecomingmorevulnerabletotheeffectsofanthropogenicclimatechanges,especiallyasmostofthecountry’sagriculturalproductionissubjectedtolargefloodsanddroughts.

Ensuringresiliencyofsmallholderfarmersagainstvolatileweatherpatternsisessentialtosecuretheagriculturalproductivityand,inturn,healthandwell-beingofMozambiqueanditspeople.Itrequiresmitigatingtheimpactofclimatechangebyde-riskingfarmerlivelihoodsbymaximizingallpossibleandexistingassets.Thisstartswithdevelopingthehouseholdandcommunityasareliablesafetynetandrequiringaholisticlivelihoodapproachforrobust‘asset’developmentandriskmitigation.
The Mozambique Climate Resilience Program
IDHhaspartneredwithfourprivatesectororganizations:Olam,SanJFS,Plexus,andSANAM,withadditionaltechnicalsupportfromActionforFoodProduction(AFPRO)toconveneaprogramprovidingsmallholderfarmersinMozambiquewithaccesstoinputs,knowledgetrainingonsustainablecottoncultivation,andtechnologyandinformationformultiplefoodcroppingandanimalhusbandry.
Theprogramisdesignedtoincreasefarmers’resilienceagainstextremeconditionsandpovertybyemployingacoordinatedapproachtoprovidefarmerswithdiversifiedincome,improvedfoodintake,andtrainingonsustainableagricultureproduction.PilotprojectsarenowrunningtosupportvillagesintheprovincesofNiassa,Nampula,andCaboDelgado.
ThroughtheIDHcottonprogramandtheexistingcollaborationsbetweenIDHandthepublicandprivatesectorswithdifferentsector-specificexpertise,thisprogramwasdevelopedasanalternativeapproachtodevelopmentandinclusivegrowth.

Inanexcitingfirstyear,theMozambiqueClimateResilienceProgramdeliveredtheimplementationoffourpilotprojectsinnorthernMozambique.Olam,Plexus,andSanJFSjoinedtheprojectin2017asprivatepartnersandprojectimplementers.Thenumberofprojectsitesexpandedtoincludeafourthprivatesectorpartner-SANAM-attheendof2018,whodemonstratedaninterestinjoiningtheprogram.CapacitybuildingsupportcomingfromAFPROandIDHsince2017hasalsoexpandedtoensuretheneedsoftheprogramweremetasaresultofthisexpansion.

Creating water sources structures:Beginningin2017,akeypriorityhasbeentoensuresupportinginfrastructureswerebuiltacrossdifferentprojectsites.Intotal,38differentstructureswerebuiltinfourvillageswithacapacityofmorethan55,000m2ofwater.Awiderangeofstructures(e.g.:communitywaterharvesting,dugwells,anddams)wasbuiltforwaterconservationandwaterharvesting,soilconservation,andirrigationtogainabetterunderstandingoftheassociatedcostsandbenefitsatthefieldlevel.
Diversification of crop production:Cropdiversificationprovidesfarmerswithbothincomediversityandfoodsecuritytoensureresilienceagainstexternalshocks.IDHhiredalocalagronomisttohelpplanandexecutesecondcroppinginallvillagesandtoprovideon-sitetraininganddemonstrationsateachoftheprojectsites.Inaddition,theprogrampartnersprovidedfarmerswithseeds,fertilizers,andpesticides.By
enablingfarmerstogrowsecondarycropsthroughtheprovisionofagriculturalinputs,fertilizers,pesticides,andfarmertraininginmodernagriculturalpractices,farmerscangrowadditionalcropsforself-sustenanceandaddedincome.
Alternate livelihood options–AnimalHusbandry:Diversificationofincomeanddietaryoptionsisenabledfurtherbyprovidinganimalhusbandryservicesasanadditionalactivitytosecondcropcultivation.Throughouttheseason,theprogramprovidedanimalsto94selectedbeneficiaries.10self-helpgroupshavebeenformedandadvisedongovernancestructures,roles,androutines.Accountabilitymechanismswereprovidedtohelpcarryoutthemanagementofanimalsinmorecost-effectiveways.
Increasing productivity in cotton:CottonisamajoragriculturalcropinMozambique,rankingsixthintotalexportvalueandamainsourceofincomeformorethan300,000smallholderhouseholdsincentralandnorthernMozambique.TheMozambiqueClimateResilienceProgrambuildsontheexistingworkforthepromotionoftheBetterCottonInitiative(BCI)andCottonmadeinAfrica(CmiA)totrainfarmersonGoodAgriculturalPracticesforsustainablecottonproduction.Thelatteriscarriedoutbycottonconcessionaires,whointurnprovidetrainingaspertheBCIprinciplestothefarmers.Inadditiontotraininggoodpractices,cottoncompaniesprovidepackagesofinputsandcredittoallsmallholdersatkeystagesoftheproductioncycle.
Generating access to energy:Accesstoenergyandinformationtechnologiesisfundamentaltobuildingresilience.Byharnessinglow-costtechnologies,theprojectsprovidesolarpanelsatthecommunitylevelalongwithappropriateimplementationschemestoensuretheycanbecreditedandreimbursedthroughviablefinancialmodels.Asastartingpointforthisintervention,3individualsreceivedsolarpanelsduringthefirstyear.Guidelineswerealsodiscussedwithentrepreneursforthemaintenanceofthesolarkitandexpansionofactivitiesinthevillage.

InMuape,Plexushelpedestablishawomen’ssavinggroupincluding13women.Theprogramadvisedthemonsettingvariousrulesforcollaborationsuchasmeetingschedules,establishingrolesandresponsibilities,principlesforsaving,borrowingandrepaying,security,accountability,etc.Inoneyear,theywereabletosaveatotalofMZN22,000witheachmembercontributingMZN50perweek.

Successfullydevisingsystematicsolutionsrequireamulti-stakeholderpartnershipoffunders,government,ImplementingPartners(IPs),andprivateorganizationstocometogethertoaddresstheissuescollectively.

Executive Summary Womenplayacriticalroleincottoncultivation.AccordingtotheInternationalTradeCenter,womencottoncultivatorsaccountfor70%ofthelaborinsowingand90%ofthelaborincottonpicking.Whilewomendoamajorityoftasksinvolvedincottoncultivation,theyhavelimitedrolestoplayindecisionmaking,limitedcontroloverprofits,andhighvalueroles.Womencultivatorshavereducedaccesstoknowledgeandskillsthatcouldhelpthemstrengthentheroletheyplayonthefarm,thuslimitingtheirabilitytomaximizeproductivityonthefarmandoptimizingyield.
Thisstudyfocusedonbuildinganunderstandingofgenderrolesandresponsibilitiesincottoncultivation,includingthegendereddivisionofaccesstoresources,currentfarmpractices,thelaborburden,andaccesstosupportfromtheecosystemviatrainings,finance,extensionservices,andgovernmentschemes.

- Currently,findingsshowthat63%untrainedwomencultivatorsdonotfollowanyscientificmethodoftraining.Thisnumberreducesto5.7%whenwomenaretrainedascultivators.
Thisstudyassessesarangeofinterventionstrategies(decreasedcostofcultivation,increaseinyield,adheringtomarketrequirements,movingbeyondcotton,andlivelihooddiversification)thatcouldpotentiallycontributetoincreasingcottonfarmers’incomes,quantifyingtheeconomicsofimplementation,andtheincrementalvalueadded.
India’scottonecosystemhasthepotentialforaradicalchangethatcanbenefitallvaluechainplayersinvolved,especiallythemillionsofsmallcottonfarmersthatformthebackboneofIndia’scottonindustry.Indiancottonfarmersarehoweverplaguedbylowyieldsandlimitedincomeoverseveralyearswhichhavecreatedahighincidenceofunsustainabledebtamongfarmersthathascreatedadditionalfinancialandsocialpressures.

Thisprojectinvokesapublic-private-civil-partnership(PPCP),whichaimstoleveragecomplementarystrengthsofthesekeysectors:thegovernment,privatesector,non-governmentalorganizations(NGOs),andlocalcommunities.Thiswouldinclude:investmentfundsfromthegovernment(underMGNREGAandotherschemes);operationalfundsfromtheprivatesector(Foundations,CSRFunds);mobilization,technological,andnetworkingskillsofNGOs(WOTR)andco-fundingandtechnicalsupportfromIDH;andownership,implementation,andgovernmentresourcesofthelocalcommunities(contributingfundsandvolunteeringlabor).
Throughthisproject,IDHaimstoestablishincreasedaccesstowater(throughwatersheddevelopmentandNRMtechnologies)supplementedbyimprovedcropwaterefficiencyandbettermanagementofwaterasaresource(throughcommunity-basedorganizationsandwaterbudgetingatacommunitylevel),arekeyenablingfactorsforbothimprovedcottonyieldsandsecuringsmallholderlivelihoods.
Increasedaccesstowaterenablessmallholderstoimprovecropproductivitythroughtimelyirrigation,allowsforadoptingasecondorthirdcrop,anddiversifyinglivelihoodsaswaterisavailableforgrowingfoddertoadoptlivestockrearing,horticulture,kitchengardens,andotheragri-alliedactivities.
Inaregioncharacterizedbyrecurrentdroughts,variabilityinrainfall,andfrequenciesofpestattacks,cropandlivelihooddiversificationiscrucialnotonlytoensureadditionalincomesbutmoreovertoensureeconomicandclimateresilienceinthefaceofincreasingsocio-environmentalshocksandstressors.Trainingongoodagriculturalpractices(cottonandothercrops)andagro-metadvisoriesprovideriskmitigationtoclimatevariances.Additionally,thepreventionofcroplossesanddiversifiedsourcesofincomereinforcesthesmallholderfarmers’abilitytocontinuetocultivatecotton,preventingashifttoalternatecropsordistressmigrationtourbancenters,thereinbuildingresiliencetothecottonvaluechain.Capacitydevelopmentofvillages’committeescreateslocalaccountabilityandthedevelopmentandstrengtheningoflocalvaluechainlinkagesensuresthesustainabilityoftheproposedclimate-resilientcommunity.
Additionally,thisprojectwillprovidetheopportunityforWOTRtoprototypetheiragro-metadvisoryservicesatthevillageandfarmlevel,amuchmorein-depthscalethanthecurrentgovernment-approvedtechnologyfordistrict/blocklevelservices,thusaddingvaluetothelargercropadvisoryprogramthatwilleventuallybescaledoutnationally.

IDHinIndiahassignedaMemorandumofUnderstanding(MoU)withtheMaharashtragovernmentunderWorldBankfundedmegaprojecttopromotesustainableagriculture–StateofMaharashtraAgribusinessandRuralTransformation(SMART).TheMoUestablishesaframeworkofcooperationbetweenIDHIndiaandtheGovernmentofMaharashtrawiththegoaloffacilitatingtheconnectionoffarmergroupsinthestatewithBetterCottonInitiativeandtheSustainableSpicesInitiative–India.
Maharashtra’sChiefMinister,DevendraFadnavis,launchedtheSMARTproject,followedbysigning50MoUsbetweencorporations,smallandmediumenterprises(SMEs),andfarmers’producergroups.ThecorporatehousesthathavepledgedsupportandsignedMoUsincludeAmazon,Walmart,MahindraAgri,Pepsico,TataRallis,RelianceRetail,BigBasket,Patanjali,TataChemical,HappyRoots,MeraKisan,andWayCool.
TheSMARTprojectaimstorevampagriculturalvaluechainswithspecialfocusonmarginal
farmersacross10,000villagescoveringaquarteroftheStatebyenhancingenterpriseformation,increasingaccesstomarkets,andpromotingclimateresilienceandresource-useefficiency.Thiswillbedonebycreatingandsupportingvaluechainsinpost-harvestsegmentsofagriculture,facilitatingagribusinessinvestment,stimulatingSMEswithinthevaluechain,supportingresilientagricultureproductionsystems,expandingaccesstonewandorganizedmarketsforproducers,andenhancingprivatesectorparticipationintheseagribusinesses.
IDHisengagingwiththeSMARTProjectManagementUnittoprovideconnectionwithagri-value-chainplayersinthekeycommodityareasweworkinandinsighttohelpshapeprojectplanninganddesign.Inthefuture,IDHwillexplorepartnershipsundertheprojectinthehorticulturesectortobuildaplatformforfacilitatingsustainableproductionandprocurementinthestateinlinewithIDH’slargerMaharashtraagendatopromotedomesticresponsiblesourcing.

AddressinggenderissuesinthecommoditysectorsofdevelopingeconomiesisoneofIDH’sfiveimpactthemesforthe2016-2020StrategicPlananddirectlyrelatestothefifthSustainableDevelopmentGoal:genderequality.
Genderequalitycanbeagoalinitselfbutalsoapreconditiontorealizedeeperimpactthroughourongoinginterventionsinotherimpactthemesbyapplyingagenderlensonsmallholderlivelihoods,improvingworkingconditionsandlivingwage,mitigatingdeforestation,andresponsibleagrochemicalmanagement.
Gender Roles in the Indian Agricultural Setting
InIndia,IDHworksinseveralagriculturalsectorswherewomenplayakeyroleandmakeasignificanteconomiccontribution.DespitethecrucialrolewomenplayinagricultureinIndia,theyaregenerallypaidlessthantheirmalecoworkers.Ruralwomen,whoworkonsmallholderfarms,oftenprovidesubstantiallaboras‘unpaid’familylabororlow-paiddaylabor.
Womenregularlydosomeofthemostarduoustaskswithover-representationinmanuallaborsuchaspickingandweeding.Moreover,theyfaceagreaterriskofharassmentandarelesslikelytobeconsideredforbenefitsandopportunities.Theyfacesignificantdifficultiesingainingaccesstocreditandtheirviewsmaybeoverlookedindecisionmakingbecauseofentrenchedgenderbiasinfarmingfamilies.
Gender Workshop
ThechallengesrelatedtogenderintheIndianagriculturalsettingpresentanopportunityforIDHtomakeadifferenceatthefieldlevelinpromotinggenderequalitywithinitsprograms.Recognizingthatintegratinggenderisajourney,IDHorganizedagenderawarenessprogramforitsImplementingPartnersinIndiaintheBetterCottonGrowthandInnovationFund,SustainableSpicesInitiative–India,andSustainableGrapesInitiativeprograms.
IDHGenderConsultant,SangitaShete,
conductedgendersensitizationtrainingswith19IPsin30locationsacrossIndia.Thetrainingsfocusedonapproximately2,000field-levelworkerswhoprovideextensionservicestooveronemillioncotton,spice,andgrapefarmers.
Inthetrainings,thefieldextensionworkersaremadeawareofmainstreaminggenderequalityintheirwork,labordivisionbasedongender,accesstoresources,decisionmaking,genderawarenessinprojectactivities,andprojectplanningforgenderinclusion.

earliertrainingthemenandwomenfarmersseparatelybasedontheworktheydo.
Afterthegendersensitizationtraining,weunderstoodthisgapandrealizedourroleinpromotinggenderequalityatthefieldlevel.Wearenowsensitizingallfarmersaboutthebenefitsofempoweringwomenfarmersandareworkingtowardsprovidingequalaccess

Genderrolesandneeds.Participantswerealertedtohowgender-basedattitudesandbehaviorpatternsdefinetherolesandneedsofwomenandmenviabrainstormingandotheractivities.
Unpackinggenderconceptsthroughreflectionandawareness.TheFFsweremadeawareoftheconceptofgender,thedifferencebetweensexandgender,andsocialconstructionofgenderstereotypesthroughreflectionexercises,discussions,andvideos.Thissessionenabledtheparticipantstoshareandchallengetheirperceptionsofgenderandsexstereotypes.
Establishingthepowerandprivilegedynamics.Practicalexamplesweregiventotheparticipantstodemonstratehowpowerandprivilegedefinetheexperienceofempowering/disempoweringmenandwomen.
Power Walk:Thisactivitywasconductedintworounds.Inthefirstround,someparticipantsweregivencommunityrolesandhadtotakepositionsbasedonthepowerheldbythatrole.Thiswasfollowedbydeconstructingconceptsofgenderdiscrimination,genderneeds,anddivisionoflaborbasedongender.

farmers.Animmediateimpactofthistrainingisthatourfield-levelteamisnowsensitizedtowardstheseissues.Now,whenevertheyplanandmonitortheirprograms,theywillcheckiftheyarereachingouttobothmenand
womenwithintheirprojects.Theywillassesswomen’scontributionintheprojectsandworkingtowardstheircapacitybuildingandempowerment.Nowthereisatransformationinthe

Integratinggender-basedplanningintoimplementationatthefield-level.Thetrainerconductedsmallgrouptasksandassessmentstomaketheparticipantsunderstandtheconceptofgenderanalysisandpracticesomebasictoolsforuseintheprojectarea.
Thetoolsforgenderanalysisandhowtointerprettheinformationincludedactivityprofile,dailyactivityclock,seasonalcalendar,accessandcontrolprofile,anddecisionmakingoverbenefits.Theywereguidedonestablishingrolesofmenandwomenfarmersandfarmworkersonthefarmandathome.
Theparticipantswereabletocollategenderdisaggregateddataacrossdomesticandfarmactivitiesandunderstandtheriskofexcludingwomenfromprogramsinrelationtotheiractiveengagementincottonproduction.Theyweresensitizedtothedoubleandtripleworkburdensofwomen.

Genderassessmentandgenderactionplanning.Theparticipantsconductedagenderassessmentoftheirprojectsandinitiatedworkonabasicgenderactionplanforimplementationwithintheirprojects.
Throughgroupdiscussionsandworksheets,theparticipantsconductedagenderassessmentoftheirprojectsfromtheperspectiveofGenderSensitivePolicies,GenderSensitiveSystems,StructuresandFacilities,andGenderSensitiveBeneficiaryProcessesandServices.Commonalitiesinplansbyallgroupswerepresentedandsummarizedbyhighlightingthekeystepsinprojectplanningthatwillallowamorenaturalandseamlessintegrationofgender-basedplanning.
Throughthisexercise,theparticipantsweremadeappreciativeoftheirprogramprinciplesthataddressgenderissues,differencesbetween‘gendersensitive’and‘gendertransformative’approachesinplanning,andtheirindividualrolesinimplementingtheirgenderactionplans.

The IDH roadmap on gender will:
- provideinputsforprojectdesignintermsofeffectivepolicies,strategies,andimplementationprogramsthatdeliverimpactandvaluetoallcrucialstakeholders;
- provideinsighttofurtherdefinethecapacitybuildingandtrainingneedsforourImplementingPartners;and
- allowIDHtodrawoutthecommonalitiesinchallengesandopportunitiesacrossourcommodityprograms,representingthebroadergenderdynamicsinagricultureforconveningandhigher-levelengagements.
