FOREWORD

Dear friends,

I write this foreword to the National Youth Assembly’s Performance report with pleasure, humility and a profound sense of satisfaction. This book contains highlights of activities, achievements and progress from August 2010 – April 2012. This span was a defining onefor us in many ways. For one, we were faced with the challenge of establishing a neworganization as well as reaching out to youth with programs that aid their own personalgrowth as well as Pakistan's development.

We started our journey with limited resources and team but, with firm commitment andvision, we have successfully carried out some extraordinary activities and projects. Toensure effective implementation, the organization needed to set measurable targets for thecommitments. We are successful to unite youth of the country from different educationalbackgrounds or systems; elite education system, government education system, etc.Through this approach we aspired to create united Pakistan.

One and half year has flown by and highlights from the past months; an unforgettableexperience for us, include many of achievements. We could not have come this far withoutour unyielding commitment, the dedicated work of our members as they continue todemonstrate the impact of youth engagement in communities across the country.

We are now operating in more than 115 districts of the country, and we have developedgrassroots leaders from these districts. Now, the family of the National Youth Assemblydevoted its life to revitalizing and meeting the challenges to make the country prosperous.

By bringing leaders together in a creative and sharing spirit to see life through the eyesand experiences of others, we created opportunities to learn about and engage with thesignificant ideas, challenges and trends shaping the future while exploring and reflectingon their own roles and responsibilities as leaders.

The National Youth Assembly has also presented many welfare concepts so far. TheNational Youth Assembly’s If’tar project is one of our substantive projects apropos to feed

forty thousand impoverished people of more than twenty districts of the country.

We do not claim to have achieved big milestones but, at the same time, they can’t beignored as insignificant with respect to the resources needed to support ambitiousprojects.

In contrary to the prevailing political culture in which youth has always been exploiting for the vested interest, we train our members, provide opportunities to explore, and introducethem, from NYA forum, in a very respectable manner.

This book explores the potential of youth as agents of change. It reflects the findings of aresearch process which studies youth-led action as a strategy for strengthening youngpeople’s ability to develop themselves, their communities and contribute to society atlarge.

I must take this opportunity to thank all legislators who pushed our concepts in realparliament, and heartfelt gratitude to all those who have encouraged us.

Looking forward, in 2013 we hope to reach out to more bright and promising young peopleand help them find the confidence to lead social change by expanding our programs, launching new initiatives and incorporating the lessons that we have learned in last intofuture endeavors.

I the pages that follow, I invite you to learn about the social issues we are addressing, approaches we are talking, results we are delivering, and ultimately the leaders we aredeveloping. I hope you will be inspired to join us in our journey to change the quality of future leadership in Pakistan.

Sincerely,

Hanan Ali AbbasiPresident, the NYAwww.nya.com.pk

BACKGROUND

Young people constitutethe largest 63% residesbetween the age 15-35segment of Pakistanipopulation. However,

Youth Literacy Rateconforming to the wider pattern in Pakistan is evenlower at 42 %. Povertyexcludes many youngpeople from civicparticipation. They have noaccess to decision-makingforums, nor acknowledgedas partners in the decisionmaking process. The youthof the country, as a whole,

limited access to state matters; they are used and manipulated by different groups. The fact is that their talent is not properly utilized, channelized and appreciated, that iswhy the talent is exploited abroad. On the other way the small segment of talentedyouth prefer to stay here but still they are not that much fruitful because they generallyare not utilized and directed. The traditional culture does not encourage young peopleto take decisions on issues concerning them.

At governmental level, first time in the history of Pakistan, on June 12, 1989, Youth Affairs Division was established, which was merged with Ministry of WomenDevelopment on October 09, 1993. It was again made a separate Division on August18, 1996 and was again merged with Ministry of Culture on November 19, 1996 as aWing. It became full-fledged Ministry on 18-11-2005, but the irony of matter is that on

March 31st, 2011, the Ministry of Youth Affairs was dissolved and delegated its powersto the provincial governments. On the top of it, the fund earmarked for youth is onerupee per person, which reflects the interest of decision makers about the future of Pakistan. Now, at federal level the dissolution of Ministry according to international

conventions andagreements, the rights of young people in Pakistanhas not moved frompaper to practice.

The period of the lifeunder which the youth

fall, is the mostproductive and energetic. But a failure to fullysupport our present"asset" as well as nextgeneration of leaders canresult grievously. We takeutmost care to fortify thefoundations while

Page 8: Yearbook 29 April

building houses but, as a nation we are bizarre, who did not pay any heed to thefoundation stones of the leadership stature of the country. When the flag of democracywas hoisted in elections, the youth was thwarted by saying; the blinds cannot lead theblinds, etc. If ever the youth has taken part in the politics, their interest has beencircumscribed to the affixing of posters, raising slogans, torching vehicles/publicproperty, and other pertinent arrangements during political rallies. The young segmentfeel this to be disrespectful for them, at that extend, to go to the polling stations andcast votes but, when it comes to any unrest situation in the country, the rebellions of the system take to the streets with clubs and baton in their hands. Like a blindelephant who trample his own army. Today, the spectacular of county’s worseningsituation - who are the real architect of future – has this question in their mind, have wedreamt for this liberty…? Have we created a new country for building structuralinfrastructure, then destroying with our own hands, and rebuilding them…? It isunfortunate that a segment of youth, despite their contributions to nationaldevelopments, find themselves trapped in a culture marked by guns, violence anddrugs. All this has resulted in an unstable economy, a shattered confidence of foreigninvestors, lawlessness, and a break-up of the social fabric.

This is the best time for Pakistan to invest in youth and reactivate and relocate their disfranchised energies if there is any need for economic growth and socialdevelopment in Pakistan. If we glance through the history of the world, it stands clear that the countries with the fastest economic growth over the past 50 years are thosewhich heavily invested in their youth. In this connection, National Youth Assembly isplaying its role to engage youth of the country in productive activities. The NYApromotes the role of youth in areas such as: human rights, social welfare, communitydevelopment, leadership training, environmental protection, cultural and religioustolerance. It provides opportunities for youth representatives from different part andparcel of the country to exchange ideas and experiences, to coordinate program plans, and to reach a better understanding of each others’ problems. Since its formation, theNYA has increased its membership to the present 500 full members, from differentdistricts of the country.

The youth of Pakistan, despite a multitude of problems like unemployment, unbalanced education system, poverty, remorselessness, social taboos, drugs, gunsand politics, have always been in the forefront of movements and political changes.

The youth is like running water. It makes its own ways. The frustration as a result of multitude of problems is increasing day by day. This is the right time to look into theproblems of youth and give them viable solutions otherwise it will be too late in theday. We need to bear in mind that the “destiny of nations is in the hands of youth.”

Unemployment is another problem being faced by our youths. Almost 12 percent(Labor Force Survey, Government of Pakistan, 1997) of our youth is unemployed.

Unemployment is a multi-dimensional and complex issue which starts a vicious cycleof associated problems like involvement of youth in politics, bank-householdburglaries, social insecurity, lawlessness, use of drugs, etc. Though every governmenthas done something for the youth with regards to eradication of unemployment but theproblem is sustainability of these programmes. One government launches a couple of youth promotion and youth investment schemes, the next one slates all the previousprogrammes and starts anew. The ultimate sufferers in this exercise are the youth.

As to radio, electronic and print media don’t target youth as one of their potentialaudiences. With the start of public-private partnership, the government should payextra attention to using them in education, welfare and development of the youth.

No doubt the youth of Pakistan is dedicated, enthusiastic with their country andhumanity but emotions are not enough they need a direction to create a positivePakistan, youth can attain this direction through constant thinking, discussions, innovations and reasoning. For the real destiny of Pakistan and to bring positiveapproach, the youth must learn the neglected lessons of truth, justice, bravery andgovernance. In this ambitious dream to be realized, the National Youth Assembly willplay its gigantic and responsible role.

In this session, Rauf Khalid said that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving common goals efficiently and effectively. He put it insimpler terms; that the leader is one who builds inspiration among his/her followers, and he/she acts as a director of the action. He or she is the person in the group thatpossesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to followhis or her direction.

Mr. Akbar Jan Marwat discussed leadership and speaking skills as: a good leader isone who makes a lasting impression on people and motivates scattered people at onepoint. A leader is someone who has followers. He noted out that great fear that manypeople have, is speaking before a group or audience. The primary reason is that theyare afraid of looking foolish in front of other people. The way to overcome this fear isthrough preparation, a safety net, and a positive attitude toward the audience. He said,“Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners.” It is closelyallied to “presenting”, although the latter has more of a commercial connotation.

The Table Topics portion of a meeting took place before or after the formal “preparedspeeches” segment and usually lasts 2 or 2.50 minutes. The Trainers announced a

topic and called on several members, one at a time, who gives impromptu one- to-two-minute responses to that topic. Step to over come that fear

Be well-prepared before addressing to a group

Practice your speech

Have a backup, in case you forget what you want to say

CAMPAIGNS

Fourteen Points of NYA on National Issues

The National Youth Assembly has identified some socio-political problems faced by uswith viable solutions to address these problems. After having thorough research andbrainstorming, we draw a fourteen-point as remedies to overcome these issues. Thesefourteen points are the reflection of the founder of Pakistan; Quaid-e-AzamMuhammad Ali Jinnah.

PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS

POOR POLITICAL DISPENSATION

Our country is a victim of plethora of maladies, likepoor political dispensation, feeble institutions, andhistorically, the system of governance democracyhas been unable to take root in the country.

We need to take drastic initiative to remove messcreated by current political dispensation throughawakening the youth, and creating awarenessabout real democratic values. A well-defined

strategy should be devised after discussing everyavenue for strong and harmonizedinstitutionalization. Like China, there should be aleadership institute for the preparing the nurseriesfor future decision makers.

EDUCATION

There is a double standard education in the countrydivided between rural and urban, and poor and rich.

The syllabus is also said to be unsuccessful inattaining the real spirit of humanity and patriotism

There should be a uniform education for allstudents of the country at every level, and at least

5% of the annual budget should be earmarked for education. In order to achieve Universal PrimaryEducation (UPE), the government should takesteps on emergency basis. The syllabus should bedesigned in job oriented manner, and technicaleducation should be included in syllabus. LikeNational Internship Program, there should be aNational Outreach Program aim at providing jobs to0.1 Million graduates near to their residence.

BALOCHISTAN ISSUE

Balochistan has an unfortunate history of denial of rights and repression against those who demandthem. It is doubly unfortunate because it has beenlargely ignored by the political forces as well as themedia, barring untoward incidents such as themurder of Nawab Akbar Bugti. The recentBalochistan package has failed to address the realissues of Balochistan.

All the Baloch political parties must be taken intoconfidence, military operation must be ceased, create new jobs for the youth of Balochistan, foreign intervention should be stopped, and removethe sense of deprivation of the people of thatprovince.

TERRORISM

Today, the country is facing numerous forms of lawand order issues. Terrorist attacks, thefts, killings, harassment, etc. are the order of the day, andpeople feel insecure because of this dilapidatingsituation of the country.

All these ills are the by-products of delayed justicesystem and lack of unity among exploiters. Weshould be aware of our rights, and forcefullydemand from the government to ensure law andorder situation in the country. The governmentshould devise its foreign policy in line with nationalsecurity, and it should be in accordance with publicreferendum or opinion. Go Green Youth – A Tree-Planting Campaign

Considering forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and givingfresh strength to our people, the

National Youth Assembly started atree-planting campaign – Go GreenYouth - by mobilizing great younghuman resource of the country.

The Capital Development Authorityagreed to establish workingrelationship with his organization for

 joint tree planting campaign.

The NYA believes that forests arethe only natural industry which

produces oxygen and according to international standards, area under forests shouldform at least 25 per cent of the total land inhabited by a human population. But thearea covered by forests in our country has been reduced to about 4.8 per cent of thetotal land. In such circumstances we should plant more and more trees. In this regard,

the National Youth Assemblyparticipated in a grand public awarenesswalk conducted by the CDA as a keysupporting organization.

Having substantial human resource inthe form of members and volunteers of NYA, the National Youth Assembly has

set a target to plant fifty-thousandsaplings in the country, and CDA andother related organizations would helpthe NYA in this regard.

Go Green Youth in Industrial City

The members of NationalYouth Assembly fromFaisalabad kicked off a tree-planting campaign; Go

Green Youth, by plantingeighty trees at DivisionalPublic School on April 27,2012.

The Head of PHA, AshiqDogar; Principal DPS,Shahid Mahmood; and other faculty members planted

trees, and highly acclaimed the eco-conscious gesture of the members of the NationalYouth Assembly. They hoped these types of activities would bring green revolution inthe city yet stimulate the youth to conserve the earth from calamity of recent climaticchangesThirty-seven position-holder students of Divisional Public School, at this ceremony, planted trees with their names. The students were motivated and vowed to takeconstant part in these types of activities.

The members of NYA, Ayesha Chaudhary, Faisal Dost Ali and Shahid Mahmood tookkeen interest toorganize thisceremony. Themembers of NYA saidtoday, they weresending a message tothe students of DPSthat they would spareno effort to makeFaisalabad green andpollution-free. They

would also try toinvolve the wholesociety to beautify thecity.

Concept of National Youth Commission

The National Youth Assembly has demanded the formation of National YouthCommission aims to targeting 63% youth demographic of the country. The purpose of this Commission would be attending the issues and grievances of youth, andreopening the opportunities that were previously running under Federal Ministry of Youth Affairs. In this regard, the president National Youth Assembly, Hanan Ali Abbasi, met with the Secretary General of PML-Q, Mushahid Hussain Syed, to discuss the

paramount significance of National Youth Commission. Senator Mushahid Hussainassured to initiate the concept of this Commission by giving it a well-structured shape.

The president NYA said that we put forward the idea of National Youth Commissionafter having thorough deliberation and consultation. He further added that atgovernmental level, first time in the history of Pakistan, in June 1989, Youth AffairsDivision was established, which was merged with Ministry of Women Development inOctober 1993. It was again made a separate Division in August 1996 and was againmerged with Ministry of Culture in November 1996 as a Wing. It became full-fledged

Page 57: Yearbook 29 April

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yearbook-29-april 57/74

Ministry in November 2005, but the irony of matter is that in March 2011, the Ministryof Youth Affairs was dissolved and delegated its powers to the provincial governments.Hanan lamented that though the devolution of power was appreciable but, at federallevel, dissolution of ministry has created a yawning gap between Pakistani youth andthe rest of the world. With the closure of this ministry, all key agreements withinternational governmental and non-governmental bodies have also been abolished.Programs run under the ministry at federal level, like National Internship Program(NIP), National Outreach Program, et al direly affected, and the continuation of theseprograms can only be maintained by National Youth Commission at federal level.

Hanan Ali Abbasi informed that unfortunately, in the name of saving money, theministry of youth affairs had been dissolved whereas, the fund earmarked for youth isone rupee per person which was 5 times less than its annual budget driven in byinternational accords. Now, at federal level the dissolution of Ministry according tointernational conventions and agreements, the rights of young people in Pakistan hasnot moved from paper to practice. Young people constitute the largest 63% residesbetween the age 15-35 segment of Pakistani population. The fact is that their talent isnot properly utilized, channelized and appreciated, that is why the talent is exploitedabroad. It is the need of the hour that federal government should re-establish ministryof youth affairs in the shape of National Youth Commission.

Introduced Student Traveling Discount Cards

The National Youth Assembly demanded from the government to issue ‘StudentTraveling Discount Cards’ to the students who travel in public transport to their respective educational establishments. The National Youth Assembly raised thisdemand after closely viewing the financial limitations faced by students, and itsadverse effect on their education. In a survey conducted by the National Youth

Assembly reflected a surprising correlation between daily expenses of students(mainly transportation) and their educational pursuit.

Today’s students are the future of this country. They can change the fate of thecountry if they are well-educated. But, the current state of the affairs and lack of facilities has made it difficult for them to continue their education properly.

In this regard, the National Youth Assembly proposed a detailed framework of StudentTraveling Discount cards scheme. The framework suggests that the centralgovernment should go ahead with the scheme which may be followed by provinces. Aspecial subsidized fund be earmarked every year for this scheme to facilitate the futureof this country. The NYA has formed a five-member committee willing to assist thegovernment to implement this project. The National Youth Assembly also suggests topermanently establishing a section within the ministry of education which should solelyattend the issues of student affairs.

How to become a great leader?

Strong Beliefs

One thing that all great leaders have in common is strong beliefs. Once you

understand your beliefs, you can next look at your group to determine if those beliefsare being promoted. To be a great leader, you don't want to waste time worrying aboutthings that are not directly connected to your beliefs.

Focus On Your Goals

You must focus on yourself and your goals. Many people have misconceptions aboutwhat it takes to be a good leader. Some will tell you it is a natural gift, while others will

Page 60: Yearbook 29 April

8/2/2019 Yearbook 29 April

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yearbook-29-april 60/74

say a leader must be tall or speak well. In reality, these factors are insignificant when itcomes to being a strong leader. The most important aspect of being a great leader ishaving strong principles.

Well Defined Principles

In addition to having well defined principles, you must also have the bravery to bring

them into fruition. You should see yourself as being a guide based on the principlesthat you believe in. It doesn't matter if you are the leader of a company, team, or army. Those who are under you will all want the same thing. They want someone who theycan trust. They want to work with a leader who is looking out for the best interests of the group. Not only will they want to be led by someone they can trust, but they alsowant to be led by someone they like. A leader is nothing if they don't have someone tofollow them.

Understanding and Promoting Your Values

If you want to know how strong of a leader you are, all you have to do is look at theperformance of your group. Do they work at a high level? Are they successful? The

performance of your group is a reflection of the quality of your own leadership. A greatleader will not only reach their goals, but they should surpass them as well. The firstthing you will want to do is decide what is important to you. You should understandyour values, goals, and beliefs. Once you have clearly defined them, you will next wantto decide if you are promoting these beliefs on a consistent basis. If you are notpromoting these values each day, you will want to start as soon as possible.

Patience

Any organization that you are with should support your principles. If it does not, youwill fail as a leader. You should provide all the necessary assistance to those under you to make sure they can succeed. They should be given all the tools they need. This

is information you will want to go over on a daily basis. Doing it, will allow you to see,how you are performing as a leader. You will want to make changes to any areas thatneed improvements. When you make changes, you will want to make sure they aredone gradually, as your group needs to become familiar with them. This will requireyou to be patient, and patience is an important trait for a good leader.

Change Your Behavior

Once you have a well defined set of beliefs, you will want to alter your behavior in sucha way that it is in alignment with your principles. In fact, a great leader will seek tocreate a culture around their principles and goals. It is important to get the thoughts of those that are under you. A common mistake made by leaders is focusing too much on

their own convictions while ignoring the opinions and thoughts of those that followthem. While you will ultimately want to support both your goals and beliefs, theopinions of those that follow you should always be taken in consideration. Remember, without them you are nothing.

Communication

Page 61: Yearbook 29 April

8/2/2019 Yearbook 29 April

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yearbook-29-april 61/74

Spend time talking with your followers to find out what they need. Communication isimportant, and a good leader will also want to be a good listener. Your followers mayhave great ideas that you may not have considered. At the same time, you will want togive your followers just enough to make them happy, but not so much that theybecome completely independent. While charisma is something that you may or maynot have, being a great leader is something that can be learned, but it will take efforton your part.

The Secrets of Successful Leaders

If you wish to be a great leader, you will want to have a deep understanding of what isvaluable to you. It is also essential for you to understand ethics. A great leader willshowcase their ethics and values in their behavior.

A common problem that many leaders have is trust from those that follow them. Whenyou don't showcase your ethics or values, people will be wary of trusting you. Thereason for this is because they can't be certain of what actions you will perform. Whenpeople understand the value and ethics of a leader, they will be more inclined to trustthem.

When a leader makes the mistake of behaving in a way that is contrary to their statedvalues and ethics, they will lose the trust of their followers, and it will be next toimpossible for them to ever get it back. The role of trust is important for those whowant to increase their leadership skills. Trust has been broken down into three parts, and these are the ability to trust, the image of competence, and the image of intentions. If you have set down important guidelines that you fail to follow, you willlose the respect of those that work under you.

However, when you follow rules that you have created, you will earn the respect of those who are beneath you. In addition to this, you will have a powerful effect on their actions. One secret to being a successful leader is to pick the values that you want todefine you. Some words that should come to mind are accuracy, respect, honesty, reliability, and efficiency. You will want to pick the values that will define your behavior, and you will want to live by it. When you live by the values you choose, you will greatlyinfluence those that follow you.

A number of things have been written about the attributes of a good leader. However, there are some characteristics which stand out from others. Great leaders are thosethat make the decision to lead, and they want to be the individuals that will be followedby others. A great leader is someone who has a powerful vision, one that is so strongthat they can practically taste it. In fact, the greatest leaders in history are those thatthought of nothing but the goals they wished to achieve. Another important trait of agood leader is the ability to motivate and inspire those that follow them. In addition tothis, they will make their own followers feel important, instead of just elevatingthemselves.

Many people have debated about whether great leaders are made or born. We believethe answer to this question is both. While there have been great leaders throughouthistory who have naturally demonstrated the ability to lead, their have been cases of normal people who have become great leaders as well. In other words, we feel thatgreat leaders can be both made and born. Leadership is not the same as

Page 62: Yearbook 29 April

8/2/2019 Yearbook 29 April

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yearbook-29-april 62/74

management. Many people make the mistake of confusing the two. There are somekey differences between the two concepts.

When someone talks about management, they are referring to those that areresponsible for giving directions to employees or workers. A manager may beresponsible for designing a number of systems which allow employees to workefficiently. They are also responsible for handling any problems that may arise amongthose they manage. The goal of a manager is to get employees to work in a manner that is highly proficient. While a manager may have some of the traits seen in leaders, they are not the true definition of one.

A great leader is rare. They tend to have a specific combination of abilities that aredifficult to learn. Many of the things that compose a great leader appear to be natural. Many people have personalities that allow them to easily move into leadershippositions, while other people may not display leadership abilities until they are placedin a difficult situation. In this situation, people that appear to be normal coulddemonstrate a brilliant capability to lead. Other people choose to lead. Theyunderstand what it takes to be a good leader, and choose to take on this role.

The Basics of News Writing: The 5 W’s

How do you write a news story? News writing follows a basic formula; there are keyelements every news story follows. While styles can diverge more dramaticallydepending on the kind of story -– a feature story may look and sound very differentthan a hard news one -- all news stories are cut from the same mold. The first elementof news writing is, of course, to deliver the news.

Most people have heard of the 5 W’s, even if they’ve never taken a journalism class. The W’s in question, as you probably know, refer to the Who, What, When, Where andWhy that every story should address. Depending on what the story is, how and whenyou answer those W’s may change. If, for example, you’re reporting on a drive-byshooting in a city, you’ll likely start with where the crime happened (what street or areaof town for the local paper) and who was involved (if you don’t have names, or thepeople are regular citizens, you might refer to notable affiliations if, say, the victim andpresumed perpetrator were gang members).

Crafting a Lede

A lede, which is a journalism slang term for the first sentence or two of a story is an

incredibly important part of the process. You need to hook readers with your lede and,in some cases (as discussed above), relay the important parts of your story. You needto draw a reader in while telling him why the story matters.

Like all forms of writing, there’s no hard and fast rule about what makes a great lede. Agood lede changes depending on the story you’re writing. One of the best ways to getfamiliar with what a good lede is, is to read. Read lots of different stories. Readbreaking news stories. Read features. Read reviews. Ledes vary wildly but, you’ll startto notice patterns and, more importantly, what kinds of ledes you like and feel areeffective.

Getting Your Nutgraf

A nutgraf, another journalism slang term, is the summarization of what the story’sabout. A nutgraf (also written with as “nut graf”) can be a sentence or a paragraph and, sometimes, may also be your lede.

Nutgrafs are incredibly important, and some might argue the heart of a story, sincethey relay why the story matters. A nutgraf needs to address why the story is beingwritten, whether the piece is about something like the aforementioned murder, or aprofile of a famous celebrity. Like ledes, nutgrafs vary wildly from story to story.

Headlines are written in bold and are typically larger than the press release text.Conventional press release headlines are present-tense and exclude "a" and "the" aswell as forms of the verb "to be" in certain contexts.

The first word in the press release headline should be capitalized, as should all proper nouns. Most headline words appear in lower-case letters, although adding a stylized"small caps" style can create a more graphically news-attractive look and feel. Do notcapitalize every word.

The simplest method to arrive at the press release headline is to extract the mostimportant keywords from your press release. Now from these keywords, try to frame alogical and attention-getting statement. Using keywords will give you better visibility insearch engines, and it will be simpler for journalists and readers to get the idea of thepress release content.

2. Write the press release body copy. The press release should be written as youwant it to appear in a news story.

Start with the date and city in which the press release is originated. The city may beomitted if it will be confusing.

The lead, or first sentence, should grab the reader and say concisely what ishappening. The next 1-2 sentences then expand upon the lead.

The press release body copy should be compact. Avoid using very long sentences andparagraphs. Avoid repetition and over use of fancy language and jargon.

A first paragraph (two to three sentences) must actually sum up the press release andthe further content must elaborate it. In a fast-paced world, neither journalists nor other readers would read the entire press release if the start of the article didn't generateinterest.

Deal with actual facts - events, products, services, people, targets, goals, plans, projects. Try to provide maximum use of concrete facts. A simple method for writing aneffective press release is to make a list of following things:

3. Communicate the 5 Ws and the H. Who, what, when, where, why, and how. Thenconsider the points below if pertinent.

• What is the actual news?

• Why this is news. ?

• The people, products, items, dates and other things related with the news

• The purpose behind the news

Your company - the source of this news

Now from the points gathered, try to construct paragraphs and assemble themsequentially: The headline > the summary or introduction of the news > event or achievements > product > people > again the concluding summary > the company.

The length of a press release should be no more than three pages. If you are sendinga hard copy, text should be double-spaced.

Page 67: Yearbook 29 April

8/2/2019 Yearbook 29 April

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yearbook-29-april 67/74

The more newsworthy you make the press release copy, the better the chances of itbeing selected by a journalist for reporting. Find out what "newsworthy" means to agiven market and use it to hook the editor or reporter.

4. Include information about the Organization. When a journalist picks up your press release for a story, he/she would logically have to mention the organization inthe news article. Journalists can then get the company information from this section.

• The title for this section should be - About XYZ_ORGANIZATION

•  After the title, use a paragraph or two to describe your company with 5/6 lineseach. The text must describe your company, its core business and thebusiness policy. Many businesses already have professionally writtenbrochures, presentations, business plans, etc. - that introductory text can beput here.

•  At the end of this section, point to your website. The link should be the exactand complete URL without any embedding so that, even if this page is printed, the link will be printed as it is.

5. Tie it together. Provide some extra information links that support your pressrelease.

6. Add contact information. If your press release is really newsworthy, journalistswould surely like more information or would like to interview key people associatedwith it.

If you are comfortable with the idea of letting your key people be contacted directly bymedia, you can provide their contact details on the press release page itself. For example, in case of some innovation, you can provide the contact information of your engineering or research team for the media.

Otherwise, you must provide the details of your media/PR department in the "Contact"section. If you do not have dedicated team for this function, you must appointsomebody who will act as a link between the media and your people.

The contact details must be limited and specific only to the current press release. Thecontact details must include:

• The Organization's Official Name

• Media Department's official Name and Contact Person

• Office Address
