“As Chair of LRS I am proud to represent the County Sports Partnership and promote sport and physical activity in the county. It is certainly not all about the elite clubs but about getting our 900,000 people active in their daily lives as well as encouraging and providing opportunities for more people to play sport.”Andy Reed, OBE, Chairman, Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport Board

Annual Review 2014/15

A LIVING LEGACY PE, school and community sport and physical activity continue to operate in a difficult financial environment. Ensuring that resources reach those with greatest need, based on solid evidence, has shaped much of our planning and delivery over the last 12 months. Making the case for sport and physical activity based on the impact of our collective effort has never been so important.

This Annual Review is full of examples of how our work together has made an impact on our clubs, schools and communities. Throughout the document you will see how individuals benefit from and contribute to sport and physical activity.

Sport, in the words of Nelson Mandela, has the power to change lives – often beyond anything that government or national organisations can achieve. Making improvements to local sport and physical activity is about the small steps that local people and organisations take, to make a difference. This review gives you a flavour of the multitude of small steps that our clubs, schools, coaches and teachers take to build a better system for school and community sport and physical activity. How it impacts on you and your local communities is the only real measure of success. Please take a moment to look and find out how our collective efforts reach your local community.

We hope that you, the reader, will be able to recognise that the legacy for sport and physical activity relies on many partners, who contribute towards a single vision to make Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland a vibrant and dynamic place to take part in sport and physical activity – irrespective of ability, age, economic or cultural barriers.

LRS believes that there is a great sport and physical activity offer, on your very doorstep. Give us a call (01509 564 888) and test our theory to see if we can help you.

On behalf of the LRS board members and the team, we wish our athletes, clubs, schools, coaches, volunteers and participants every sporting success for the year ahead.

forewordLeicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) is a partnership of the Local Authorities of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland working together with schools, National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs), clubs, coaches and volunteers to create a lasting legacy for sport and physical activity.

“We have been inundated with positive feedback from everyone involved and as a result we have been able to continue offering sessions after the project has come to an end.”Dom Beck, President & Head Coach, Leicester Futsal Club

Leicester Futsal Girls SportivateAn eight week Sportivate futsal project was delivered at Brockington College in partnership with Leicester Futsal Club. The sessions were targeted at girls from Brockington College who had low levels of activity and little or no previous experience of futsal. The sessions initially focused on the basic skills required for the game and as the weeks progressed the focus changed to match specific situations. The final week consisted of a tournament that provided the girls with an opportunity to test the skills they had learnt over previous weeks in a competitive environment.

The sessions were really well attended and a number of the girls enjoyed the project so much they became members of the club and continue to participate on a weekly basis. Blaby District Council are now working in partnership with the club to identify other young people from the district that could benefit from this opportunity to take part in one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.

The Energy Club CampThe Energy Club Camp was delivered over three days at South Wigston High School in partnership with the Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership. The aim of the camp was to educate less active and overweight primary aged children in the Blaby District about the benefits of a balanced diet and regular physical activity. This is particularly significant as Leicestershire currently has a large percentage (30.1%) of overweight and obese children at year 6.

Parents and carers were also invited to the camp on day two to take part in a healthy breakfast challenge to reinforce the messages. Feedback demonstrated that 86% of the children that took part in the programme felt better informed about the importance of a healthy diet and were going to make an effort to improve their diet after the camp. 100% of the children felt better informed about the importance of regular exercise and 86% suggested they were going to do more exercise after the camp.

Blaby is currently the most active district (150+ minutes of physical activity a week) in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, the 4th most active district in the East Midlands and the 18th most active district in England.Public Health Outcomes Framework

Gorse Covert Walk InitiativeA patient group from the Maxwell Drive Surgery approached the Charnwood Sport & Active Recreation Team for support to establish a walking group from Gorse Covert Community Centre. The aim was to target those who used the surgery and had low levels of physical activity.

The first walk attracted seven people. Since then the group continued to grow with an average weekly attendance of 20. The walks have remained popular with an impressive 879 attendances from April 2014 – March 2015. The walks are now led by four volunteers who have been supported to gain a walk leader qualification.

The group has expanded to not only surgery users but members of the local community and is open to anybody whether they have walked previously or are new to walking. The walk started at just 1-2 miles in length and has now increased to 3-4 miles as the walkers have gained confidence and increased their fitness levels.

Charnwood Boccia ClubThe Charnwood Disability Sport Activator consulted with disabled people at an existing sport and physical activity session, as well as local community groups which support adults with disabilities, to determine the demand for a local Boccia Club. After a need was identified, Charnwood Boccia Club was established and registered with Boccia England, thus ensuring support and equipment from the NGB and aiding its success.

After a slow start, numbers steadily increased week on week with regular attendances now ranging between 16 and 20 adults. The benefits gained by the group from each session include increased confidence, team-building and social skills which are transferrable into everyday life. Plans for inter-group competitions which will progress into regional and national competitions are underway and due to support from Loughborough Leisure Centre, the Boccia club will be able to continue.

The Charnwood Sports Awards panel received its youngest ever nomination for Brody Walters aged four. Brody received a standing ovation from the 180 guests when he collected his Special Recognition Award in the Junior Disabled Sports Person of the Year category.

It is great to see the development of each individual since the sessions have begun and the benefits they have gained through participating.” Mark Beeby, Charnwood Disability Sport Activator

“Wednesday mornings are blocked out in diaries not only as a health walk but as a social occasion for many. It is a pleasure to be a walk leader and to see so many people enjoying themselves - including me!” Ann Bullock, Walking for Health Walk Leader and Trainer

Mini Girls Active Lifestyle Club (GALS)One hundred girls from 10 local primary schools came together for a GALS celebration event at Harborough Leisure Centre after taking part in 6 weeks of activity in school. The schools designed a series of weekly fitness based programme targeting non active girls to help improve their confidence, self-esteem and expose them to a wide range of non-traditional sports. As part of the activities the girls were given a diary to record their experiences.

At the celebration event the girls took part in fun fitness based activities such as yoga, cheerleading, street dance and core stability and they had the chance to meet and interact with other like-minded girls. The girls also received an inspirational speech by Olympic Pole Vaulter Kate Dennison who spoke about the benefits of exercise and the barriers she had to overcome as a female athlete.

86% of participants reported that they now do more physical activity outside of school.

Learning Disability Weight Management ProgrammeThe Learning Disability Weight Management Programme was a six week project aimed at reducing obesity and increasing physical activity levels for adults with learning disabilities. The project was led by a dietician and physical activity officers.

Each session consisted of an hour of physical activity ranging from chair based exercise, fitness exercises and team building games, followed by an hour with the dietician. Each week had a theme covering topics such as food labels, balanced diet and portion control.

Every week all participants were weighed. Eleven adults completed the project, with a total weight loss of over 17 pounds. The project was extremely successful and work is currently taking place with the group to sustain physical activity.

Three Harborough GO GOLD Athletes are competing at an international level in their sports: Lucy Hall (Triathlon), Candice Hall (Swimming) and Dylan Fletcher (Sailing).

Macmillan Health and Wellbeing Activity ClubBuilding on the success of the Inclusive Sports Group, the Sport and Health Alliance submitted a funding bid to Macmillan Cancer Support to run a physical activity group specifically for people affected by cancer. The bid was successful and funding was received to deliver a two year pilot scheme at Sport in Desford.

The group offers support and advice, allowing individuals to talk to people who may have the same fears and concerns. There is also the opportunity to engage in physical activity which has excellent benefits for individuals diagnosed with cancer.

At every session participants can try out a variety of sports including tennis, table tennis, dance, gym and new age curling. The sessions are free for the first two years. The sessions started in November and are making a really positive difference to the individuals attending. Ongoing evaluations are tracking the benefits of the scheme.

Rusty Rackets and Inclusive Tennis SessionsHinckley Town Tennis Club were supported by the Sport and Health Alliance to submit a bid to the ‘Shires Grant’ to run a scheme to attract ex-players back to the game of tennis. The scheme was called Rusty Rackets as it was hoped that people would get their old rackets out of the cupboard and have fun getting back into tennis.

The scheme proved so successful that over 60 people came down and were reintroduced to tennis and 18 players have since joined the club. The club followed this up by bidding for a further grant to run weekly coaching sessions for special needs players and this has again proved successful with a 20 week coaching scheme running at Hollycroft Park and Hinckley Town Tennis Club for special needs players who are improving their skills and health.

The winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award has come from Hinckley and Bosworth twice in the last three years!

Get Healthy Get into Sport: New ParksLRS in partnership with Leicester City Council and North West Leicestershire District Council were successful in obtaining an award from Sport England to support the delivery of a Get Healthy Get Into Sport (GHGIS) Project across two areas; New Parks and Greenhill.

GHGIS in New Parks provided tailored one to one mentoring and group support to help inactive individuals make sustained improvements to their physical activity levels. Some participants were also offered the opportunity to become local sport and physical activity champions, increasing the number of active sport volunteers as well as providing more opportunities for local people to participate in regularly.

Since the programme began in September 2013, New Parks Leisure Centre has seen over 250 users take part, which has resulted in over 2,300 visits to the centre.

Leicester City Tag Rugby LeagueWith Leicester City stadium due to host three matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, a partnership was formed to inspire the next generation of young players. Partners included LRS, Leicester City Council, Leicester City School Sport and Physical Activity Network, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College, the RFU and Belgrave Rugby Football Club.

The partnership came together to offer a tag rugby league for primary schools in Leicester City, giving them the opportunity to play tag rugby and to excite and inspire young people about the Rugby World Cup. The central venue league took place at St Margaret’s Pastures and culminated in a final at Belgrave Rugby Football Club. Over the course of the year, ten primary schools took part with over 120 young people playing tag rugby.

As well as encouraging the next generation of young players, young leaders from Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College were trained in tag rugby officiating by the RFU and 12 leaders attended each session, helping to co-ordinate the competition and referee the fixtures.

Since 2005, the percentage of adults in Leicester City taking part in sport once a week for 30 minutes has increased by 2.6%.

BallanceBallance is a new and innovative physical activity designed specifically for women and girls combining football and dance. Developed by Melton Borough Council this is a completely new and fresh approach to utilise football to increase the number of physically active women and girls in the borough.

The sessions were piloted with a local under 16 girls football team and after a launch event, Ballance established as a class targeting females based at one of Melton’s Sure Start children’s centres. Introductory classes ran for four weeks at the children’s centre and have continued at Waterfield Leisure Centre as weekly sessions.

Ballance was also delivered to a target group of young women on behalf of the Football Association (FA) as part of a Youth Sport Trust Girls Active Camp attended by 165 young girls from across the country. The FA is currently in the development stages for a similar activity aimed at women and girls.

ParkrunThere has been a real boom in running in Melton in the last year with a beginners group on a Monday night attracting attendances of up to 100 people. Many of these runners have now joined the Saturday morning parkrun in Melton Country Park. Through the hard work of race director Shane Sharkey and 20 dedicated volunteers, the first Melton parkrun attracted 262 runners who waited patiently in the heavy rain for parkrun to officially launch in Melton.

The parkrun is a five kilometre run through the paths and green spaces of Melton County Park and has attracted hundreds of local people of all ages and backgrounds, many of whom were new to running. The weekly sessions aim to establish habitual exercise and physical activity among the local population while encouraging the use of Melton’s outdoor green spaces. The parkruns are free and have grown in popularity and attendance with 70 running clubs taking part in the events.

Two hundred people took part in an inaugural Zombie Trail at Melton Country Park. The fun event challenged participants to walk or run a three-mile route around the park, with zombies lying in wait in the woods to give them a fright!

“The session was well good! It was really tiring, but fun and like nothing I’ve done before.” Female Participant, Aged 15

“The spirit of parkrunners is truly admirable. After unfortunately having to cancel one event due to ice and snow, I stayed on at the park to turn away anyone who hadn’t received the Facebook post or the message on the website, and still around 70 runners turned up, ran the course and timed themselves!”Shane Sharkey, Race Director

Walking Football ProgrammeWalking football includes all the normal rules of the mainstream game but in a less formal format which can appeal to older participants. The benefit of walking football means that those adults that have a long standing injury or illness can take part in a sport that they love.

A walking football programme was set up at Hermitage Leisure Centre, aimed at people over the age of 55 and based on local research and insight provided by the Get Into Football Officer. Many of the participants had finished playing football in their 30s and did not think they would play again, therefore taking part in the programme has been fantastic for all those involved.

Many of the participants had not previously visited their local leisure centre and as a consequence several of them are now involved in other activities for the over 50s age group; greatly increasing their activity levels. Other key outcomes of the programme have included increased mobility and improvements in self-esteem and self-confidence.

Workplace Health ChecksA health check day for all council employees took place in January 2015 alongside the LRS Workplace Challenge. Health assessments such as BMI, weight, cholesterol and blood pressure were offered to employees and information was also provided by Leicestershire’s Active Travel Team.

The health checks also gave employees the opportunity to shape a programme of targeted activity that would allow them to take part in exercises that they wanted at times to suit their working patterns.

Several employees commented on how much more motivated they felt in the afternoons following their activities and how much easier it was for them to fit exercising in at lunchtimes rather than other times of the day. Classes at local centres have now been embedded within the leisure centre timetable to fit around staff working hours and several members of staff now bike to work as a result of the programme.

This year the NWLLSA awarded 58 grants for talented athletes and coach education.

Moving TogetherThe Moving Together project provided young people in the borough with an opportunity to be more physically active and to gain a nationally recognised qualification through dance. Each participant had the chance to experience a wide variety of styles such as Bollywood, Contemporary, African and Swing. The students were able to attend and review professional performances at the Curve Theatre and take part in master classes from professional teachers.

During the final week of the project the students delivered an excellent performance to family and friends to demonstrate what they had learnt over the 20 week course. The young people involved highlighted that this opportunity appealed to them because there were not many chances locally to participate in non-competitive dance sessions and they did not have to worry about being judged on their ability or how they looked.

Energy Holiday ClubThe Energy Holiday Club for primary school children was an extension of the already successful weekly Energy Club programme running in schools in Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston. The aim of the programme was to give an opportunity to children with low levels of physical activity to improve their social skills, increase their confidence and raise their physical activity levels and awareness of the importance of good nutrition.

The children took part in a wide range of games as well as team building challenges which helped to raise their self-esteem and break down their barriers to participating in physical activity in the future. Parents were invited to attend the celebration event at the end of the week where certificates, t-shirts and awards were presented to the participants. The sessions created a safe, fun and informal environment to inspire the children to get more active.

Some of the Oadby and Wigston Sports Awards winners also went on to win major county awards presented at the 2014 Leicester Mercury Sports Awards evening. Amy Griffiths received Young Sportswoman of the Year, Pani Mamuneas received Young Sportsman of the Year and Hope Warner received Junior Sportswoman of the Year.

Active Rehab Triathlete Coach Mary Hardwick and Physiotherapist Julie Peach of Inspire2Tri, combined their passion and knowledge of both practices to create a highly successful, non-intimidating Active Rehab class.

Active Rehab focuses specifically on rehabilitation from health conditions such as joint mobility, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, falls, hip and knee replacements and for clients with mobility challenges. The 45 minute class uses a circuit format with Julie providing exercises that are structured appropriately to all levels of ability and individual conditions.

Active Rehab distances itself from the typical gym environment which can sometimes make clients feel intimidated or uncomfortable. Instead, sessions take place at the Inspire2Tri private studio where clients can feel at ease, are able to relax and take their time with their exercises without feeling under pressure.

Spotlight 2015The 11th ‘Spotlight’, a week-long dance festival which gives community and school groups the opportunity to showcase their talents, took place at Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre.

The week started with the Community Spotlight show involving three community based dance schools with 18 different dances being performed by participants of all ages. The Primary Spotlight took place over the following two nights with over 450 children taking part from 16 schools, together with the Rutland Youth Dance Academy. The Secondary Spotlight show saw over 130 children take to the stage to culminate another successful year of dancing talent.

The highlight and success of Spotlight 2015 came from the first ever inclusion group, Step To It. This group was formed through collaborative work by the Rutland County Council Legacy Maker, Aiming High Team and the Rutland Youth Dance Academy, utilising Sportivate funding. The success of this dance group has greatly exceeded expectations, doubling initial targets of participation.

‘Me and My’ is a pupil insight software tool owned by LRS and jointly developed with a number of partners. The software provides primary and secondary schools with a series of online survey tools to help capture and interpret pupils’ views and perceptions. It supports schools with developing a concise self-evaluation, provides a greater understanding of pupils’ sporting preferences and explores other areas of school life with young people.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Awareness Training Programme

Quest Plus – LRS Excelling

“We were debating on whether to revert to some single sex groups, or even single ability groups, and we wanted feedback from our students on this matter. The software provided us with the platform to explore this in detail and help us to shape our offer to meet our pupils’ needs.”Ian Gibson, Acting Head of PE, Ashby School

LRS undertook the Quest Plus Sports Development self-assessment process which involved an external assessor spending two days with the LRS team and partners. Prior to the visit the LRS team undertook a comprehensive reflection exercise to identify our strengths and weaknesses against the Quest criteria. The team and assessor considered our work in 13 different areas with LRS scoring excellent in 12 of the 13 areas, with an overall rating of excellent.

The visits involved the assessor meeting a range of external partners and exploring areas such as leadership,

LRS has continued to support partners around equity and inclusion through the introduction of a new Awareness Raising Programme. The aim was to provide partners with an insight into organisations working with a number of hard to reach communities. The programme would help raise understanding of hard to reach groups and assist partners to consider the most effective means of delivery when developing future sport and physical activity programmes.

Workshops covered a range of topics including; Effective Engagement with BME communities, Understanding

“The workshops have been invaluable in giving an insight into how other organisations work and getting guidance on how to better engage with some of our hard to reach communities. I’ve gained the knowledge and confidence to develop new areas of work.” Leanne Plummer, Physical Activity Development Officer

“This is a creative, skilful and well organised team with high morale who deliver results and go over and above core requirements on a regular basis.” Paul Brivio, Quest Assessor

governance and partnership working. These were key areas in which the assessor felt that LRS excelled.

The team felt that the Quest process in itself was really worthwhile. The ability of the assessor to get below the surface of the evidence and offer constructive insight was of significant benefit to the ongoing LRS ‘Good to Great’ improvement journey. Staff and partners were able to contribute to the process in a positive way while the assessor unpicked the rafts of evidence presented and constructed some key challenges for our next steps.

Ashby School are one of over 100 schools in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland that have purchased ‘Me and My’. One of the first schools to use the software, they have surveyed over 500 pupils to help shape their school sport offer. Utilising the Survey Builder feature, Ashby School created a survey to investigate attitudes towards participation in PE to help them identify solutions in reducing negative attitudes.

AMBITIONS

There is a year on year increase in participation by children and young people in high quality PE, sport and physical activity.

AMBITION SUMMARYTo work in partnership with Head Teachers, governors, PE practitioners, early years settings and sporting advocates through our School Sport and Physical Activity Networks (SSPANs) to increase access and participation in PE, sport and physical activity for all children and young people.

The number of adults regularly taking part in sport and physical activity increases year on year.

AMBITION SUMMARYTo work with locality partners and National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) to increase adult participation. We do this by securing resources to develop new ways of attracting people into physical activity and sport such as campaign weeks, the Workplace Challenge initiative and by funding and promoting Back to Sport programmes.

Facilities, playing pitches and spaces that encourage sport and physical activity are high quality and accessible.

AMBITION SUMMARYTo work with partners to support and shape the future provision of a balanced and high quality stock of sports and physical activity facilities and open spaces, in order to develop active and healthy communities. We do this by contributing to strategic planning and supporting business planning and funding applications.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Special Olympics and other major sporting events continue to inspire generations to start, stay and succeed in sport and physical activity.

AMBITION SUMMARYTo maximise the benefits of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for the people of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland and to use the London 2012 Games, 2009 Special Olympics and other major sporting events to inspire people to play more sport and become more physically active.

There is a high quality structure to deliver sport with appropriate and accessible pathways.

AMBITION SUMMARYTo work in partnership with NGBs, localities, SSPANs, schools, clubs and our sporting workforce to ensure there are high quality structures in place to deliver sport and that every participant, regardless of their ability, can fulfil their sporting potential.

∫ Over 50 Early Years settings and 70 individuals have benefited from Early Years Purposeful Play training.

Primary Sport Premium Funding – Broom Leys Primary SchoolBroom Leys Primary School has 546 pupils on roll. The school has used its Primary Sport Premium Funding to ensure that they include all children in sport and physical activity. All staff have been trained to ensure that activity is sustained and not reliant on external deliverers. The aim of the school is to highlight achievement in sport and ensure that every child is physically literate.

Participation rates have increased and pupils from Years 2-6 are involved in a range of inter-school sports competitions with notable successes in cross country and gymnastics. Sport and physical activity opportunities have improved pupils’ well-being and are influencing pupils’ academic achievement, as seen by their improving attainment. All teachers are required to teach two hours of PE per week which, along with accessing various training courses, has increased both their confidence and competence.

“Until recently, I had taught PE without much confidence in what I was doing. By working alongside our PE and Sport Coordinator I have developed my subject knowledge and feel far more confident in my ability to deliver high quality lessons for our pupils.” Rebecca Goldring, Teacher

2014 East Midlands Satellite Club of the YearThe Castle Rock Rugby Satellite Club run by Coalville RFC, has engaged with 40-50 young people on a weekly basis and has been recognised by Sport England as the 2014 East Midlands Satellite Club of the Year. In addition, David Kennedy, a dedicated student, who not only plays, but also volunteers at the club, has won the 2014 East Midlands Satellite Club Participant of the year award.

Many of the regular participants that attended the Satellite sessions have demonstrated challenging behaviour in the past, particularly in school. These sessions have changed the attitudes of so many young people and the results are clear in their positive approach towards community activity.

A group of 4-5 volunteer coaches from Coalville RFC have enabled the sessions to be sustained on a weekly basis. These coaches are supported by a cluster of young leaders who ensure quality coaching sessions and emphasise fun and enjoyment. So far the Satellite Club programme has brought 16 new players into Coalville RFC. Participants at the Satellite Club sessions are automatically invited to Coalville RFC to train with their appropriate age group.

“The Satellite Club has not only provided many participation opportunities for those attending, but has also given the older members a chance to volunteer within both sporting and non-sporting environments.”

Shane Fox, Head Coach, Coalville Rugby Club

The Oldest Athlete Award was presented to Harold Veazey, 96, from Melton, who attends the gym at Waterfield Leisure Centre three times a week, using the CV equipment and weights sections. Harold is a very popular member of the gym and plays an important role in enhancing the atmosphere within it.

“It’s great to see so many of our older athletes being recognised for their achievements together with those who have made the choice to have a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and those who continually give their time to others.” Kay England, imago

Workplace ChallengeWorkplace Challenge, a national project supported by the County Sport Partnership Network and British Heart Foundation, has continued to be delivered locally by LRS. The programme comprises of an Activity Log Challenge, a Competition Programme and the Business Games.

More than 39,500 activities were logged during the 2015 eight week activity log challenge, in which there were 1,400 active users from 191 workplaces. Since the challenge started there has been a total of 2,600 users from 375 workplaces. Working alongside NGBs, a programme of 10 Workplace Challenge Competitions were delivered and the Business Games saw 20 workplace teams participate in an evening of sporting activity.

“It’s hard to find time to exercise in a 9-5 job, but this has encouraged me to do more in my lunch times and around work. It has been a great team building and social tool for my colleagues at Melton Borough Council especially during the 8 week activity challenge. Collectively, we covered a distance of 2,231 miles…incredible!”

Charlotte Dunmore, Melton Borough Council

Upstarts Gymnastics ClubUpstarts Gymnastics Club was set up three years ago to give more children the opportunity to take part in Gymnastics. The club started with 53 young gymnasts and seven coaches and operated once a week. Upstarts has grown to 300 members and 15 coaches operating across three sites. Through a great deal of hard work and determination the club has raised over £90,000 to fund the leasing and fitting out of their first gymnastics centre.

The club successfully raised £72,892 from the Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund to support with the refurbishment of an existing industrial unit and the purchasing of new gymnastics equipment. The new facility provides the club with a new permanent base to grow and develop, offering classes for beginners, advanced, boys groups and teenagers. Success would not have been possible without the drive and leadership of head coach Emma Van Tienen and her team of dedicated committee members, enthusiastic coaches, supportive parents and the gymnasts themselves.

“The ambition to get our very own facility is a dream come true for our club. It has been really hard work and there have been some real challenges along the way, but this new facility will provide a real lift and fantastic experiences and opportunities for hundreds of young people who love gymnastics.”

Emma van Tienen, Head Coach, Upstarts Gymnastics Club

∫ A new partnership between LRS and our Local Authority partners has created a new post within the LRS team to develop new local sports facility plans, better supply and demand evidence and increase developer contributions for sport and physical activity.

∫ Over £750,000 raised from Sport England funding programmes to support local sports facilities.

∫ Over £3.8 million of developer contributions has been secured by two local parish councils for investment in to new facilities for sport and physical activity.

Rawlins Fit for LifeRawlins Academy has successfully secured £435,300 from the Sport England Improvement Fund to support the conversion of their aging swimming pool into a new flexible sport and physical activity space for pupils and the local community. The conversion is estimated to cost £690,000 and will create new indoor fitness, dance and physical activity spaces to provide improved PE and community sports activities.

The old swimming pool had developed structural problems and had become un- economical to repair. However, the school did not want to lose a sporting facility so took the decision to embark on a fundraising programme and find an alternative sporting use for the building.

The new facility is due to open in September 2015 and will be used for community fitness activities, dance, martial arts, table tennis and other sporting activities.

“Converting our old swimming pool is a great example of how schools can purposefully revive aging facilities and demonstrates our Academy’s commitment to ensuring that PE, sport and physical activity stays high on our agenda for students and the local community.” Callum Orr, Principal, Rawlins Academy

Rothley Tennis Goes Bright BlueRothley Ivanhoe Tennis Club opened their refurbished courts with a well-attended open day in October 2014. The club has been working for two years on delivering its vision to create a safer and more welcoming environment in the winter as tennis is played all year. The club has also extended and resurfaced two courts and painted them blue which is very striking.

Anne Mumford who has been seeking funding for the developments said: “We have had to work hard to get the partnership funding as lots of other clubs and sports are also trying to get funding too. We took the advice of LRS that we should first develop a vision for our club and its facilities and get buy-in from all members and the parents of our juniors. Having done that we were well placed to get funding.”

Funding partners were: BIFFA, Charnwood Borough Council, Harry Hames Trust, Lafarge Tarmac, Leicestershire Legacy Fund, Tennis Leicestershire as well as many contributions from members and local sponsors.

“It was great to see so many people of all ages participating in the tennis and watching. We have had some good open days but this really was the best.”

Ben Dijkstra – GO GOLD AmbassadorBen Dijkstra has received support from the LRS GO GOLD Funding Programme for the last four years and during this time he has made a fantastic transition from athletics to triathlon. In 2010/11 Ben was a promising middle distance runner but since his move to triathlon he has made huge strides. At the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Ben was involved in a nail biting finish to win a Gold medal and be crowned Youth Olympic Champion. This was a truly fantastic achievement in a sport that is still relatively new to him.

This year Ben also received the prestigious Chairman’s Trophy from the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Bill Boulter. This Award goes to the athlete that has made the most significant progress in their chosen sport over a 12 month period and Ben was a very worthy winner.

“I gave it everything and I’m so glad this is the result, it’s amazing. I just had to keep on going; none of us were going to give up when there was an Olympic Gold medal at stake!”Ben Dijkstra, GO GOLD Ambassador

Fourteen young leaders aged 16-19 were selected to join the Academy through an application process and attended a series of training sessions throughout the year, shaped around their needs, in order to achieve their personal goals and professional ambitions.

As a result of being in the Academy, the leaders have been selected for various local and national volunteering opportunities such as the Sainsbury’s School Games in Manchester, Youth Sport Trust National Young Coaches Talent Camp, Leicester-Shire and Rutland School Games Local Organising Committee and Rugby World Cup. One leader wrote and delivered a speech about the importance of school sport to local headteachers at the School Sport Dinner, which was received positively by the audience. Talented Family DuoTalented mother and daughter duo Amelia and Beatle Payne from the world of equestrian have benefited from a range of support services from LRS.

Beatle is a talented rider, who has been part of the GO GOLD Funding Programme for a number of years. She has competed at the British Championships for many years and has had an excellent season, the highlight being a 1st place finish at the British Riding Club Regional Eventing Championships. However, Beatle’s success is no accident; she has been supported by her Mum, Amelia, who has guided her progress since she started riding at three years old.

Amelia is a UKCC Level 3 coach who has been involved in the British Equestrian Foundation elite rider pathway for a number of years. Recently she was selected by LRS to join the GO GOLD Talented Coaches programme and Amelia’s long term aim is to achieve a UKCC Level 4 Coach qualification and continue to develop to coach at high levels within her NGB.

“The talented coach programme has been a great help with support for training and development, but also for networking with coaches within other sports, with everyone having such a great wealth of knowledge and ideas to share.” Amelia Payne, GO GOLD Coach

ENTERPRISE AND INNOVATION During the past two years, LRS has been developing a portfolio of innovative traded products and services to support the local partnership area and the national CSP network. Innovative products such as SportSuite and ‘Me and My’ pupil insight software are expanding to support schools, CSPs, NGBs and SSPANs with technology based products and services to meet the growing demands for insight, managing information and running services more efficiently. Demand for these and other products is beginning to generate new sources of revenue for LRS to reinvest into the partnership area. These products and services will form the basis of a plan that aims to reduce our reliance on grant and public funding and position LRS as an organisation that provides high quality traded services.

‘Me and My’ is a survey software package that provides primary and secondary schools with a series of online survey tools and live reporting mechanisms to help teachers capture and interpret pupils’ views. The software is compatible with school information management systems, providing

detailed analysis of pupil responses across many different subject areas. The software is currently being used to provide insight and information about young people’s sport and physical activity behaviours to shape better sport and physical activity provision both in and out of school.

SportSuite, a partnership between LRS and Cuttlefish Media Ltd, is a set of innovative web based information management

tools designed by, with and for organisations that provide sport and physical activity. Through intelligent hosting of an organisation’s customer/core database, the software can manage sports fixtures, provide innovative search tools for sports activities, sports funding, news and jobs, provide newsletters and surveying tools and co-ordinate events.

FACTS AND FIGURES:

∫ 315 schools registered with ‘Me And My’ and 9 Franchises sold to other CSPs.

THE SPORT AND HEALTH SURVEY TOLD US:
