...tO the 13th annual nevada city Film Festival!Yes, we know we’ve got something very special going on here. Every summer we put together a homegrown festival, a one-of-a-kind party, and we throw it right here in our hometown of Nevada City. Which oh-by-the-way happens to be one of the most charming and historic villages in the western United States.

We’ve been doing these shindigs for a while now: (this is our 13th go’

round), and over the previous dozen years we’ve figured out a thing or two

about how to Do it Right.

First and foremost we as always present a mind-boggling array of

remarkable films in a carefully curated set of programs that are the

heartbeat of the festival. Narrative storytelling, dramas, comedies,

documentaries, animation... “Something for everyone” as they say.

And perhaps all that amazing works such as “Night Giant”, “Slomo”,

“Délicate Gravitè”, “Kali the Little Vampire”, “William & the Windmill”, and so

many others, share in common is their creativity, their craftsmanship, and

the power to get the viewer thinking about our world (and maybe even his

or herself) in a slightly different way.

In conjunction with these programs we of course play host to a score

of brilliant up-and-coming filmmakers, actors and artists. By plane, boat

and train we get ‘em up here to the Sierra foothills so they can share and

discuss their work one-on one with the NCFF audience.

As if that all wasn’t enough, we’ll also be hosting workshops, special

programs for children, some raging after-parties and (we promise!) a cool

surprise or two. Or three!

So go ahead, stroll the gas-lit streets of Nevada City, swim at your favorite spot

along the Yuba River. But while you do, remember, it’s a special time in a special

place, where we make art into a party: Nevada City Film Festival #13!

meet the ncFF staFF Jeff Clark Executive DirectorClark began working with the festival at its inception in 2001. The same year, he began operating and renovating the Magic Theatre, one of the smallest (and finest) art house cinemas in California. A native northern Californian who moved to Nevada City from Los

Angeles in 1996, Jeffrey endorses the sentiments of Henry Miller who wrote: “… Art teaches nothing, except the significance of life.”

Jesse Locks Festival DirectorNevada City native, Jesse moved sixteen times in ten years before returning back to the Sierra Nevada Foothills. She has worked in independent publishing and music for over fifteen years. This is Jesse’s fourth year as Festival Director and seventh year with the film festival. Her favorite film is Jeremiah Johnson.

Rich Good Creative DirectorBorn in England, destined for the California landscape, Rich runs his own design company named The Indiana Experiment. A firm believer that we should always strive to do only what we love. Therefore he spends his time trying to balance a life of travel, music and design.

Zach Haller Technical DirectorWith a background in Audio Visual Production for Corporate Events and Entertainment, Zach brings together the necessary components of sound, lighting, and video to execute a live production. His expertise as an Event Technician, Technical Director, and Production Manager has led to a passion for elements and moments that bring about common positive experience and vibration.

Zoe Toffaleti Assistant Festival DirectorZoe Toffaleti grew up in Nevada City, but in 2009, she left to seek her fortune in glamorous Santa Cruz, CA. In June, she graduated from UCSC with a degree in Film and Digital Media. Diploma still hot off the presses, she moved back to Nevada City and began working as assistant festival director at NCFF.

aBOut the FestivalThe Nevada City Film Festival is made up of a group of passionate

filmmakers and artists that have worked to create an outlet for emerging

new voices and ideas while providing audiences with a unique experience

in a picturesque location.

NCFF and its Magic Lantern Film Society are committed to serving

education, and culture through the medium of film and video.

In addition, we are committed to presenting creative, diverse,

independent films from around the world that would otherwise have little

narrative shOrtsDaydreams and phantasms, damaged families and bent friendships, escape and returning, mistakes and redemption: each makes an appearance in this year’s program of Narrative Shorts. “Chasseur” and “Night Giant” seem to occur in a mythic time of their own. “Benny” and Niki face contrasting challenges of growing up; and so in their own way do Peter and Donald in “Donald Cried.” And when credits roll for the be-boppin’ “Find Me a Daddy,” please feel free to snap your fingers.

That the characters we encounter in these six films emerge from different corners of the earth only highlights what is common in our humanity. Fate is a common theme, whether it seems to intervene (“Retrovisor”), or tempt (“Jungesselin”). In “Lean on Me” some dry, gallows Irish humor is fully on display, while the beautiful “Délicate Gravité” presents a

breathtaking romantic interplay on the cusp between coincidence and

choice. Saturday, 11:00 AM / Miners Foundry Osborn & Woods Hall

dOcumentary shOrtsSix films that paint portraits of real people and actual events. “Slomo” is the new, chosen identity of a former doctor who has re-booted his life in a radical (and rad) way; while “Keep a Modest Head” creatively presents Jean Benoit, whose life story can literally be said to be Surreal. In “Not Anymore” the upheaval in post-Arab Spring Syria is unflinchingly portrayed; as is a glimpse into the lives of those for whom clean water is sadly not a given (“This is Normal”).

animatiOn shOrtsThough we tend to wow our audiences by presenting the wide variety of creative techniques in today’s world of animation, the real power of these nine short films lies in their storytelling; their capacity to ignite our

imaginations. The quest for love and self-realization, resilience in the face of bigotry, journeys into the depths of the earth and beyond the pull of gravity, all exhibited here with a cast of mannequins, lint-people, clothespins and yes, “Irish Folk Furniture”.

88 Miles to Moscow Karen Glienke15-year-old Niki is just back from a trip with her ex-con dad, and mom is eager to hear all the juicy details. Over tea and face masks, Niki gives the scoop about all the fun things that happened, but somehow fails to mention a few things, like getting off the train for a smoke, being stranded in the middle of nowhere and having to find her way back with the help of a young Russian garbage man. Indeed, when Mom learns that she met a boy, Niki’s tales of ‘Austin from Boston’ don’t quite match her adventures with the Lord of the Rings obsessed boy who wants to be her hero. But when Mom’s line of questioning takes some surprising turns, Niki must decide what her next move will be. As her world seems ever more derailed, one thing becomes clear: like all journeys worth taking, Niki’s cannot be measured in miles alone. (USA, 20min)

Instead, the blood-soaked Chasseur encounters the Devil’s lawyer, weaselly Mycroft Coney. FILMAGE: The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL follows drummer/square-peg Bill Stevenson and his ‘caffeinated retardedness’ as he pushes his rotating door of bandmates to ‘achieve ALL,’ his philosophy of going for greatness at all costs. Stevenson is a force to be reckoned with–not even grapefruit-sized brain tumors can keep him down. Interviews with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion) and many more reveal the story of a band–if not THE band – responsible for pop-punk as you know it. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly Sergio LeoneBy far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the “Man With No Name,” this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of $200,000 and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold, hard close-ups, exceptional camera work captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape and the hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Forging a vibrant and yet detached style of action that had not been seen before, and has never been matched since, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shatters the western mold in true Clint Eastwood style. We ride: The Story of Snowboarding Jon Drever, Orlando von EinsiedelA compelling, dramatic and stylish cinematic journey into snowboarding’s unique history and the wider cultural forces that shaped it. Half a century ago, in his garage in the suburbs of Muskegon, Michigan, a father decides to tie two basic skis together so his young daughter can enjoy riding on the seasonal snow. Fast forward to the present day and snowboarding is not only an Olympic sport, but a multimillion dollar global industry. Top riders are classed as international celebrities, competitions are world-class events and riding pushes the limits of human capability. This documentary tells the story of snowboarding through the eyes of the people who made it happen. From its origins in the culturally shifting 1960s, to its boom in the 90s, to its acceptance as a mainstream sport, snowboarding has had a roller coaster history. An archive film narrated by Jason Lee and a cast of dozens of snowboarders, We Ride: The Story of Snowboarding is the first feature film to tell the story of how this outsiders’ sport became huge. suppOrt independent Film year-rOund!In 2001, the Nevada City Film Festival was formed by local filmmakers, for local filmmakers. As the festival grew from a grassroots event to an international film festival attracting filmmakers and filmgoers from all over the world, the NCFF team has been holding onto that homegrown feeling while expanding our programming to meet the increasing demand. In 2008, NCFF formed the Magic Lantern Corporation, a non-profit 501(C) 3 organization, to better serve Nevada County and nearby regions by providing art, entertainment, education, and culture through the medium of film and video. In 2011, the Magic Lantern Film Society was established to encourage membership, local partnerships, and year-round independent film programming.

When you join the Magic Lantern Film Society, you don’t just get the perks (although with rad stickers and discounted admission to the Magic Theater, those are nothing to sneeze at). You also get to be part of the legacy of community support for independent film

and filmmaking in Nevada County.

Your membership enables NCFF to:

• Support local artists by screening their work in our Local

Filmmaker’s Showcase and underwriting their submission fees to

the festival

• Bring filmmakers from around the globe to Nevada City for

the festival

• Present creative, diverse, innovative, international films that

would otherwise never be shown in our area

• Curate and present film programs and other cultural events

• Host a world-class international film festival in Nevada County

If you love film, join our growing community of filmgoers and filmmakers and

help preserve the legacy of arts and culture in Nevada County. Start receiving

your membership benefits today! Review membership levels and benefits at
