After having great success in the Llandudno, Conwy, Colwyn Bay areas, we have been encouraged by many of our readers and advertisers to expand a little further afield. Our aim is to encourage our advertisers and readers to stay Local and to help make our local businesses more successful and competitive.
Every edition we run a FREE ‘Whats on Page’ at the back of the magazine for the convenience of our readers and to promote local events. Please let us know if you wish to be included in this.We also have a very successful Website and Business Directory and all our advertisers automatically feature free on both of these, thus further promoting their products.
Since starting publishing in February 2010 we have striven to improve and add more local content and we are Keen to hear from our local readers who may have a funny story to tell, an interesting poem they have written or anything else which may be of interest to other readers. I’m the first to say that a garden consisting of only plants is a lost opportunity. No, I’m not suggesting you cram your garden full of too much paving, decking, shingle or other hardware
(and that includes well-dressed meerkats!) but as well as plants, you should encourage plenty of wildlife. Everyone has their favourites and some may even find some forms of wildlife less-than-appealing, but there’s no doubt that having wildlife in and around your plot will add an extra and very appealing dimension… literally bringing your garden to life. Anything you do to encour-age wildlife is worthwhile, but here are my top ten suggestions:
SLUGS & SNAILSWhen you use those little blue slug pellets there is plenty of evidence to suggest that you’re also endangering wildlife such as hedgehogs and birds. Use biological controls, organic slug deterrents, beer traps or copper rings to keep slugs off your plants instead.
INSECT CAFEMake sure that you provide plenty of nectar as a vital food source for beneficial insects such as hoverflies, pollinators such as bees, a wide array of butterflies and all those other harmless creatures that might otherwise go short of food. Simple shaped (non-double) flowers, especially those with open centres are best – try poached egg plants, sedums and achilleas.
CORRIDORS OF POWERGround living wildlife such as some of the insects, frogs, toads and hedgehogs to name a few, need to be able to move safely within a gar-den and also from one garden to the next. Try to arrange some of your planting so that they can safely scuttle from one plant to the next, protected by the plants’ foliage and stems. Large expanses of open space makes life harder for them.
BUTTERFLIESButterflies start out as caterpillars, and for those caterpillars to de-velop there needs to be somewhere for the adult to lay her eggs. Nettles are widely used as a good plant on which the caterpillars of some butterflies can grow and develop. If your garden is quite big then try to spare a corner to allow nettles and other ‘wild’ plants to thrive. If you don’t like the idea of having nettles in your flowerbeds, then plant some into flowerpots and plunge these in a sunny spot near your beds and borders – this way you’ll give the butterflies the plant but won’t risk the nettles spreading.
HIGH-RISE ACCOMMODATIONVertical planting helps wildlife too. Rather than having bare house or garage walls, or an ugly shed, plant it up. Using trellis or wires to support climbers such as honeysuckle you’ll not only have a better looking garden and have hidden an eye-sore, but will also be providing a useful roosting and resting place, a potential nest site and a source of food for wildlife.
BIRDSProvide a ‘bird bath’ for birds of all shapes and sizes to use when they need a drink or to bathe. Shallow water works well but it will need changing and replenishing frequently, especially in hot weather. Make sure that you install it somewhere that is well out of reach of local cats and other predators.
GARDEN CHEMICALSDon’t buy any more garden chemicals – they may seem to provide an easy and quick solution to your garden problems, but most end up endangering beneficial or harmful insects as well as the ones that you are trying to control. Wipe out the beneficial insects and you’ll not only reduce the interest in your garden, but may also be killing some of the insects which have the potential to be your allies as they would normally help to control the pests.
BIRD BOXESBird boxes really help to encourage birds to nest and reproduce in your garden. Try to put some up now as the birds will be used to them by next spring and more likely to occupy them. During the
winter months, birds and insects often use nest boxes as roosting places too, hiding and finding protection from the worst of the weather. Make sure that you choose bird boxes with the RSPB or BTO sign of approval, or make your own using instructions from these organisations.
PONDS & WATER FEATURESInstall a pond or even just a simple water feature and you’ll be amazed by the amount
of wildlife it attracts. Dragonflies, damselflies, other insects, plenty of birds and other animals will use the pond or feature as a drink-ing place. If you can manage to squeeze in a wildlife pond then you’ll also be providing potential breeding and feeding places too.
BERRIED TREASUREPlant some shrubs that produce tasty berries or hips later in the year. Autumn fruiting plants, especially those whose fruits last in to the winter, provide a vital source of food for many animals, especially birds. Wild roses, Pyracantha, Crab Apples – all make great garden plants but also provide a useful food source

Central Heating Prepare for winter and update your central heating while the weather is warm. Most homes have central heating now, but you may not realise that boilers only last for between 10 and 15 years. So if you haven’t replaced your boiler during this time, it’s worth doing. You will have a more effectual system, your energy saving will improve and your heating bills will be reduced.Don’t underestimate the upheaval and expense of completely renovating your entire central heating system though. Replacing your boiler should only take a couple of days, but installing a whole set of new radiators as well can take a long time. Modern gas central heating is highly efficient and provides instant warmth without inflicting smelly, dry air like storage heaters and gas fires. And some of the radiators available now are almost sculptural in appearance. You must consult a professional company to do this work. By law, all gas boilers must be fitted by Gas Safe registered installers. Find your
nearest installer here http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/. Boilers should also be serviced regularly to ensure they are working
effectively and safely.Get this work done now and your home will be toasty and
cosy this winter.

Cars to enjoy in your retirementYou’ve worked hard, looked after the pennies and sacrificed your preferred choice of wheels for family cars. However, things are different now: the children have flown the nest, you’ve got time on your hands and more importantly more cash, so why not treat yourself to a new set of wheels?
Retirement is the perfect time to take advantage of lower insurance premiums and empty roads (everyone else is at work), but the hard part is what to choose. Here we take a look at five cars to suit five different needs…
The Grandparents Called Into Duty choice… Audi Q7Our pick: 3.0 TDI Clean Diesel S Line, £47,290A large part of enjoying retirement is the luxury of having time to lend a hand looking after your grandchildren. The thing is, little ones come with a lot of baggage, so you’ll need a car that can fit it all in. The Q7 is a great solution. Not only has it got acres of spaces, efficient diesel engine choices and a great specification, it’s also fabulous to drive.
The I’ve Got A Reputation To Uphold choice… BMW 5-SeriesOur pick: 520d SE Touring, £31,830The new 5 Series is a marked improvement on the out-going model. It not only looks better now the design has been toned down, but the engines are even more efficient. If you’ve spent your life in the boardroom, you’ll know how good a BMW is and there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a new one now. We’d go for the Touring (estate) version, which looks stunning and has plenty of room too. Just don’t go mad on the options list!
The I’ve Got To Have A Sportscar choice… Jaguar XKROur pick: XKR Coupe, £77,900You’ve worked hard for it, so why not splash the cash on something that’ll make an impression at the golf club? We’d resist the urge to buy a Porsche 911 (despite the force being strong) and instead head for a Jag dealership. The XK-R is a cracking car to look at, great to drive and sounds incredible, but above all it’s comfortable. If you really want to blow the budget, find another £6k and opt for the convertible.
The Keeping An Eye On The Pennies choice… Hyundai ix35Our pick: 1.7 CRDI Premium, £19,345If you’re looking for a car that’s good to drive, comfortable, won’t cost the earth and has a decent warranty, then the ix35 is a great option. Hyundai has really upped its game with this soft-roader in terms of build quality and feel. It looks great and the high-level driving position gives a commanding view of the road. Just beware lead times are long so get that order in well before you want to take delivery.
The Chance To Relive Your Youth choice… VW Golf GTIOur pick: GTI, £25,045The Golf GTI has been a fixture in most of our motoring lives for decades, but we’d hazard a guess that although you always wanted one, it never really fit in with your lifestyle. Well, now’s your chance. The MK6 is the latest version and even though it’s put on a few pounds since the legendary MK1 arrived it’s still very good indeed. The 2.0-litre TSI lump serves up 207bhp, which is good for 60mph in 6.9 seconds and, as it’s built by Germans, it’ll stay the course too.

Marsh family. It’s one of the oldest buildings in the area and full of character, making it a highly atmospheric performance space – especially for a tense thriller or murder mystery...
We normally perform two productions a year, with a balance of comedy, drama, music and original material. When not performing, we read plays for pleasure and hold social activities for our members. In the past year these have included theatre trips, historical walks, treasure hunts and even a beginners’ croquet lesson! We aim to have a good time, no matter what we do.
Since our launch we’ve built up a loyal audience following, with tickets always selling out very quickly. This has enabled us to make a donation to local charities from the proceeds of every production. Thanks to the continued support of our patrons, these payments have so far amounted to some £1,550. Our charity this year is St. Kentigern Hospice in St. Asaph.
Staging a play is a lot of fun and very rewarding, but requires the talents of many people. We’re always on the look-out for new members, for every aspect of production, as well as committee roles such as ‘secretary’ and ‘treasurer’, which are vital for keeping any society going. We hold regular ‘taster’ sessions throughout the year, which are an ideal opportunity to come along and see if you’d like to join us. (We’re sure you would!) Whether you want to write a script, act, direct or do backstage work, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re the only pub theatre group in North Wales, so come and be part of something unique!

Led by a local lad, American explorer Hiram Bingham first set eyes on Machu Picchu in 1911, an exhilarating moment still shared today by the daily quota of 21st century visitors. Some arrive on foot on the old Inca trail, others by special bus from the valley but all are equally awestruck when the city is finally revealed in its splendid isolation.
At over 8000 feet, high above the roaring Urubamba river, Machu Picchu sits on a saddle in jungle-clad mountains, enclosed by cliffs plunging 1500 feet into a precipitous gorge and in the distance, the glistening ridges and glaciers of the High Andes. The city was built in the 15th century, most likely for Pachacutec, the greatest of all Inca emperors, but mysteriously abandoned within a hundred years. Fortunately the Spanish invaders never discovered it and framed by its green iconic peaks, it was preserved, now a UNESCO site for posterity. It’s a steep climb up Huayna, the main peak, but even if you don’t reach the top, the view is stunning, mountains rising all around and the lost city spreading at your feet, outlined like an Andean condor.
Imagine over 100 flights of steps, a festival square, farming terraces cut into the slopes, irrigated by sacred springs, and 140 Inca buildings with dry stone walls, rounded corners and tapering frames designed to withstand earthquakes. There were royal and sacred grounds and residential quarters, home to potters, stone masons and weavers. All worked for the nobility and their priests in exchange for protection in this world and the next.
The sun is blisteringly hot, the path rough and the steps high but wandering through the maze of alleyways is full of wonders; here the watchman’s hut at the highest point, there the sacred stone, shaped like the mountain behind it to draw positive energy, the Temple of the Condor where rocks are carved like the bird in full flight or the House of the Mortars where small basins were filled with water to catch the stars. You can explore the ruins of the Royal Palace, protected by a 30 tonne door, the Princess House, the Main Temple with a small stone chiselled with 32 angles (though no one knows why) and the Temple of the Three Windows symbolising the three worlds of Andean cosmology.
The Incas worshipped many gods – mountains, lightning, rainbow, earth, moon – but most important to them was the Sun God, at the heart of farming cycles and religious rituals. The Temple of the Sun has a semi-circular tower where on the solstice, the first rays of the sun are in perfect alignment with the altar. It’s no wonder Machu Picchu has a special aura in the early morning when there’s time to sit and stare and only the dawn chorus disturbs the peace. It’s bitterly cold, crowds are few and as the peaks slowly creep out of the shadows, the ritual stone of Intihuatana begins to glow, marking the spot where on the shortest day of the year, the Incas would ‘tie up the sun’ for fear it may not come back. Llamas graze by the gate, orchids shed the morning dew and you can almost see the Virgins of the Sun shuffling along the old Inca walls. Solange Hando

Since taking over the shop on Colwyn Avenue in Rhos on Sea, John, Jo and Ceri Carpenter have worked hard to make it The Natural Choice for local
people seeking a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 10th year, the shop continues to thrive by offering customers an extensive range of organic and environmentally friendly products, gifts and supplements. Most importantly of all, customers enjoy the kind of friendly, individualised service that only a family-run store can offer. According to Jo Carpenter, this approach to customer service has always been central to The Natural Choice.
‘We are all about old-fashioned family service,’ she said. ‘Our customers are at the forefront of all we do. If there is a product we don’t have in stock, we will always try to order it in. Usually we can source it within a couple of days.’
The Carpenters bring a wealth of experience to their store. Ceri previously worked for a major high street health store while John and Jo ran a Vegetarian Guesthouse in Llandudno for many years. Between them they have a growing knowledge of healthy foods, restrictive diets and natural remedies, and are always willing to share this with their customers.
Customers describe The Natural Choice as a veritable Aladdin’s Cave. Its shelves boast a wide range of products including an array of supplements, cruelty-free toiletries, skin care, environmentally friendly cleaning products and healthy snacks.
It also offers a selection of chilled and frozen foods as well as local free-range eggs.
Products catering for special diets are among the bestsellers at The Natural Choice. Says Jo, ‘we stock a huge range of gluten-free products. More and more people these days are becoming gluten intolerant and, as a result, there are always new products entering the market. ‘
The shop is a distribution point for Farmers’ Garden Organic Veg Boxes offering fresh locally-sourced produce, and a selection of organic fruit and vegetables is available in the shop on Thursdays and Fridays.
Ten years on, Jo Carpenter says she and her family are still having a ball. ‘We still enjoy it as much as we ever did, and hope to be here a long time yet.’
During the first two weeks of September, The Natural Choice will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a series of in-store tastings, free samples and information displays. Representatives from the store’s suppliers will be on hand to offer help and advice.
The Natural Choice shop is located on: 14 Colwyn Avenue, Rhos on Sea, LL28 4RB 01492 549520. www.thenaturalchoice.biz

One of the most dramatic transformers is the aptly named Asus Eee Pad Transformer (pictured here). At first glance it looks like any tablet computer: it’s the size of an iPad, runs Google’s Android operating system and does everything you’d expect a cutting-edge tablet computer to do. But if you’re willing to add another £50 to its £379 price, the Transformer will happily turn itself into a laptop. The optional keyboard dock is enormously clever, and not just because it gives you proper keys to type on. There’s a second battery in there, which you can use to top-up the Transformer’s own battery or obtain longer battery life. Attaching the dock gives you another 6.5 hours of useful working time, making the Transformer a capable netbook as well as a great tablet. If you don’t need the extra power, Asus also makes another transforming device: the Slider, a tablet with a full-sized slide-out keyboard.Asus isn’t the only firm thinking that tablets could double as laptops. There’s a wide range of iPad add-ons, including the impressive Zagg Keyboard Case. £80 will buy an aircraft-grade aluminium case that doubles as an iPad stand
and proper keyboard. It’s more comfortable for prolonged typing than the
on-screen keyboard and it keeps
your tablet safe too.
With smartphones
getting more powerful by the
month, many models now rival
laptops in their sheer processing power - so
why not turn them into laptops too? That’s what Motorola decided to do with its Atrix. On its own, the Atrix is a powerful dual-core Android smartphone; team it up with the innovative Lapdock (pictured here) and it becomes a laptop. The laptop is essentially a laptop without the brains: its familiar case includes a normal keyboard, trackpad and screen, but there’s no computer inside. That’s where your phone comes in: there’s a slot behind the screen where you park your Atrix, connecting it to the keyboard and screen and turning your phone into a credible netbook. If you’d rather put the phone at the centre of your home entertainment system, around £30 buys the multimedia dock for easy connections to monitors,
flat-screen TVs and external peripherals, again, enabling you to make your Atrix resemble a traditional computer. There are two problems with the Atrix’s Lapdock, though. The first is the price. At the time of writing it’s being offered online for £250-£350. The second is that the Atrix’s Android operating system wasn’t really designed to work on a desktop or laptop computer. The Asus Eee Transformer suffers from this too, but not as badly: its newer version of Android, Honeycomb, was specifically designed for use on big screens. Previous versions were designed for small mobile phone
screens.So is the transforming
trend something
you should embrace? If you fancy a
tablet but like to do some typing,
the Eee Pad Transformer is an excellent option and it’s priced competitively too. The Atrix is more of a niche product, though: while the phone itself is often free on reasonably priced contracts, the Lapdock is a fairly pricey add-on. New devices will appear soon, we’re sure: Asus is struggling to keep up with the demand for its Transformer, and where there’s a hit there’s usually a whole bunch of me-too machines following suit.
The days when gadgets did one thing and one thing only may be coming to an end. The latest tech trend is transforming: devices that change from one kind of gadget to another.

TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on cajun then replace with a sprinkling of dried Italian herbs.
700g (1lb 9oz) monkfish fillet
2tbsp olive oil
1tsp lemon juice
1 tbsp Cajun seasoning
8 medium-sized waxy potatoes, such as Desiree
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
225g (8oz) cherry tomatoes
1 lemon, sliced
Sunflower oil for shallow frying
Serves 4Takes One hour
Cut the monkfish into large chunks and place in a shallow roasting tin. Mix together the oil and lemon juice and pour over the fish. Sprinkle over the Cajun seasoning. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
Place the unpeeled potatoes in a large pan of salted water. Bring to the boil and boil for 5 mins. Drain and leave to cool for 10 mins.
Peel the skins o the potatoes and coarsely grate the potato flesh into a bowl. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using your hands, divide and shape the grated potato into about 8 flat cakes.
Place the lemon slices in the roasting tin with the monkfish and cook in the oven for 15 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook for a further 5-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the tomatoes are tender.
Heat 30-45ml (2-3tbsp) oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Fry the potato rosti, in batches, for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown, adding more oil as necessary. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
Arrange the potato rosti on serving plates and top with the roast monkfish, lemon slices and tomatoes. Pour over any juices left in the roasting tin and serve immediately.
Monkfish has a wonderful firm
flesh with a meaty flavour and
is well suited to roasting,
however cod loin or a thick
piece of salmon fillet will
work just as well.

There have been discussions regarding the purchase of second hand mobility products. Often a deal can be got, however be warned you could end up paying more for the second hand product than a new product from a reputable dealer!
Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs The main products purchased second hand but one of the major problems for ongoing costs. Buying from the press you must presume the minimum ongoing cost will be a set of batteries - if the scooter looks well kept then hopefully the batteries will be the only problem.
Some retailers sell second hand. If you’re buying from one of these ensure you get a computer print out of the state of the batteries (all reputable dealers have battery testing equipment) or a written guarantee that new batteries have been put on the product - with a minimum six-month product, parts and labour warranty As with all second hand equipment it’s Buyer beware - keep in the back of your mind at all times that there are reputable dealers out there that sell brand new scooters for under £500 or road scooters (over 4 mph) for under £1000 with full warranty.
If you’re “trading in” a scooter beware of the selling price of the new scooter, often the more disreputable dealers will give you a “fair price” for your product but then sell the new product at an inflated price - always check with other dealers their price - you may be better off selling your product privately and buying the new product from a reputable company.
Riser Recliner ChairsOnce again if you know the person you are buying from then you know the situation. The issue here is more of a health issue - ensure the chair is clean and has been chemically treated to ensure no infectious bacteria has been left from a previous owner.
With all the “Super bugs” and “MRSA” going around along with the previous users may have had incontinence problems for your own peace of mind have it cleaned and treated. If you’re buying from a dealer ensure you have in writing that it has been cleaned and sprayed with a relevant chemical treatment. Also remember that you get a minimum of 6 months written
Warranty for parts and labour. Remember though don’t overpay, you can get a brand new riser recliner chair from a reputable dealer from well under £400.

Are you ready for the Welsh carrier bag charge? The Welsh Government wants to drastically reduce the number of bags given away in Wales. So from 1 October 2011, you’ll pay at least 5p for all single use carrier bags.
The carrier bag charge will apply in all shops including clothes stores, take away food outlets and restaurants, corner shops and market stalls. It will also apply when you have goods delivered in Wales, such as dot.com groceries.
You can avoid the charge by taking your own bags shopping with you.
What bags are included in the charge?
All single use carrier bags are included in the charge. This includes bags made of plastic, paper and degradable material.
What bags are not included in the charge?
Only bags used in certain circumstances, such as ones used for unpackaged food like meat, vegetables or poultry are exempt.
Bags used to carry free prescriptions or other items which are supplied free on the NHS are not included in the charge.
Any bags that are intended to be reused for example ‘bags for life’ and those made from cloth, jute, or cotton are also not included in the charge.
Why take action on carrier bags?
During 2009-10, in Wales we took home an estimated 350 million carrier bags from the major supermarkets alone. Bags are bad for the environment as they are a waste of resources, create litter and harm wildlife.

20 Ways to get a fresh look
Want to give your home a quick, easy and inexpensive makeover for summer? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell offers 20
inspiring solutions
1. Pop some fresh flowers in a vase. Even casual arrangements of garden flowers in a jam jar, milk bottle or enamel jug will brighten up all but the most formal of rooms.
2. Light a scented candle or line up a set of multicoloured tea lights.3. Change your cushion covers. For the most up-to-date look, choose vivid but co-ordinating colours, in a variety of quirky
patterns. 4. Disguise a tired sofa or a boring bed with a pretty throw. 5. Replace dated lampshades or light fittings. So quick, easy and cheap, there’s no excuse not to.6. While you’re at it, check that your light bulbs are the right wattage for the room – there’s nothing worse than poorly lit
rooms, or ones that are so dazzling they look like a lamp shop. 7. Use paint to transform your home from top to bottom. Floors, walls, window frames, skirtings, shelves, free-standing
furniture and even kitchen and bathroom tiles can all be refreshed and revived with a lick of paint. 8. Flooring sets the tone for any room, and if your carpet is looking tired, you’ll be amazed at the effect a change can have.
One option is to remove the carpet entirely and renovate the boards beneath. To strip away old stains or surface coatings, hire a professional sanding machine and follow the instructions carefully, before sealing, staining, liming, waxing, bleaching or painting.
9. Adding or replacing a rug is another instant way to change the look of your floor. Think bold texture, pattern or colour.10. In a girl’s room, suspending a corona over the bed, with some sheer curtains draped around, will go miles towards that
fairytale room she’s always wanted.11. Flower lights wrapped around the bedhead are a lovely touch, too. A boy might prefer camouflage netting or a giant map
of the world on the wall behind the bed.12. Create a fabulous display of pictures. Instead of dotting them around in an ad hoc
fashion, frame them all the same and hang in orderly rows for super-duper impact.13. Look at your light switches. If yours are of the bog-standard, white plastic type, check
out the alternatives – stainless steel, nickel, chrome, brass, even ‘invisible’ acrylic, with a rocker, dolly or even neat little push button switch. The same goes for switch plates, TV aerial sockets, even shaver and electric toothbrush plates.
14. Do the same for door handles, blind and light pulls, cupboard and drawer pulls, and any other knobs or handles you can find. Substituting ordinary ones with something interesting, tactile and good-looking can make a world of difference.
15. Take down dodgy nets and preserve your privacy with stick-on plastic film instead. It’s easy to apply and much less expensive than having your windows sandblasted. Patterns range from lace to graphic spots.
16. Flouncy, fussy curtains have to go. Replace with simpler versions (no pelmets, thanks). Practically every high-street store has ready-made curtains at reasonable prices.
17. New bath and basin taps will go a long way towards giving your bathroom extra pizzazz. Replacing them is a doddle for a plumber (or even a DIY dad).
18. The most ugly-duckling bathroom can be turned into a beautiful swan with the right towels. Soft, neutral colours have a timeless look, while bold patterns are of the moment.
19. The latest look for walls is to use specially designed stickers to create a graphic, funky pattern. Just peel and position for an instant new look.
20. Last but by no means least, clean your windows – it really will add a sparkle to the room.

Foot CareIt is wonderful to be able to throw off our boots and socks during the summer and to wear colourful open shoes. But if you have cracked heels and overgrown toenails, those summer sandals should be left in the cupboard until you have taken the time to give your feet a bit of love and attention.Dry heels or any areas of hard skin are the first uglies that should be dealt with. With the trend of taking a shower rather than a bath – all the more so in the summer – your feet don’t have a chance to soak. Run a bowl of warm water with some moisturising bath oil or even a little olive oil. Leave your feet to soak for at least five minutes, then using a pumice stone or foot file rub away the hard areas. Using an exfoliating granular foot scrub will remove surface dry skin from the whole foot.Toenails next. They should be cut straight across with a strong pair of nailclippers, then any rough edges taken off with a good quality nail file. Don’t cut them too short though or you risk exposing delicate
skin. Put some cuticle remover cream around the base of the nail, then using an orangewood stick gently push the cuticles back.Hairy toes might have been fine for Bigfoot, but it’s not a good look for you, so use wax or cream to remove any hair on your toes. Then apply a rich moisturizer all over your feet and leave it to soak in for as long as possible.Use a little nail varnish remover to clean your toenails before applying two thin coats of nail varnish. Finally, if you find that you have difficulty even reaching your feet, let alone scrubbing and clipping, a professional pedicure is well worth the money and will last several weeks.
Although the obvious thing to say is to drink when you are thirsty, as we age the ability to feel thirst deteriorates. So you should be conscious of this, and particularly if you have been active in warm weather, increase your fluid intake for the rest of the day. But don’t go from one extreme to the other; if you feel you have become dehydrated make an effort to drink little and often. It can be dangerous to consume a very high quantity of fluid in a short time.
One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more is to pay attention to your urinary habits. If it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your urine is dark yellow, then it is time to increase your fluids.
Water is one of the most basic needs for human life. Although we can survive without food for around three weeks, we can’t manage without water for more than about three days.
The mantra of ‘drink eight glasses of water a day’ is repeated again and again as the ultimate goal for good health. But actually it’s a myth and it’s not really known where it came from. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be freezing or sweltering?
Your water intake doesn’t even have to come from ‘water’. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks – and even teas and coffees, despite being slightly diuretic - are all sources of fluid. Again another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true.
Drinking
