Dear YES Members

We are happy to release the newsletter issue documenting the 2nd Semester of 2014Last year has been a very busy year for us and we are grateful of what we achieved in it and more grateful to you for your support The 3rd YES Congress preparations have taken a large part of our time and energy last year and we would like to thank all individuals and partners who have contributed from near or far to its success It was a successful event where YES members gathered with senior geoscientists policy makers and activists from Geoscience organizations to discuss critical themes in Geoscience and talk about their research and projects Moreover the YES leadership was also active worldwide representing the network in meet-ings (India) or starting collaborations with new partners (Iran Morocco China) Our na-tional chapters did also a great job in promoting YES values in their respectives countries All this said the biggest highlight of 2014 was the registration of the YES Network as a Non-Profit Organization After 6 years existing as an online platform for young and early career earth scientists around the world the YES Network is taking an important step forward thanks to the efforts of all its leaderships and the people that believed in it since it was created We are taking the network to a different level and we are inviting all our members to join us and continue supporting us in this beautiful adventure The best is yet to come A new website new projects new leadership and more Just Stay tuned (and get involed)

YES in India Indian Chapter of YES Network participated in the 50th Annual convention of Indian Geophysical Union (wwwiguorg) being organized at the Indian Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) Hyderabad from 08th -12th January 2014 The convention was inaugurated by Prof YTLee President ICSU Among other invitees Dr Carol Finn President IGU and Dr Alik Ismail-Zadeh SG-IUGG were the Guests of Honour for the convention There were more than 50 YES members who participated in the convention and 22 presented the ongoing research work Two out of them did bag the best poster award conferred by Prof HK Gupta President IUGG CODATA 2014 Presentation and participation in Committee on Data for Science and Technology of the International Council of Science [CODATA] (November 2014) Secretary General Dr Tanvi Arora was invited in the special session of Early Career Data Professional (ECDP) of the CODATA She discussed about the YES Network Role and Perspective towards promoting Earth Science for Society with the audience present YES also participated in the Hackathon lead and organized by ECDP group She finally launched the idea of Horizon2020 G2020YES2020 and the participation of YES in taking the lead for the project The proposed area of work for the 20 leading countries will be ldquoWaterrdquo

YES in ChinaPresident of YES Network Meng WANG attended China Mining 2014 in Tianjing China with IUGS delegations He set up the meeting between IUGS officials and China MinMetals Corporation Leaders IUGS Bureau members and key NASIC members met with Mr Wang Jionghui As-sistant President of China MinMetals Corporation one of the largest mining companies in China on the afternoon of October 22 2014 The two sides briefed each other on their respective major activities and exchanged views on the pos-sible cooperation on Resources for Future Generation RFG

YES in Morocco YES Network was represented by Vice President Dr Amel Barich in the Mediterranean Days of Water Information Systems in Rabat Morocco on the 20th and 21st March 2014 Perspectives of involvement of the YES Network in the support of YES in the field were discussed beside fu-ture collaborations The YES Network was also a partner in the Day for Earth Sciences in Africa and Middle East ldquoGeoeducation Geo-heritage and Peace Building in Africa and Middle Eastrdquo 19-

MoU between YES Network and Geological Survey of IranAs the invitation by the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) Meng WANG president of YES Network participated in the First International Conference on Geoscience for Politics Economy and Culture in Tehran 16-19 FebruaryAbout 70 foreign earth scientists many from neighboring countries participated in this Conference which was held back-to-back with the 32nd National Geoscience Conference held in 12 Iranian cities each focusing on one specific geoscience themeOn 18 February Meng WANG signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of YES Network with Director General of GSI Korehie who is a Vice Minister on cooperation between both parties In an ANNEX of that MoU concrete actions for implementation are described including setting up a National Committee of YES in Iran with the host of GSI promoting the development of young earth scientists in Iran and so on

MoU between YES Network and The Moroccan Scientific CommunityA MoU was signed by Vice President Dr Amel barich with the Moroccan Scientific Community President Mr Khalid Marbou on 6 August in Agadir Morocco during the First International Forum of Popular Science (6-9 August 2014) The forum featured many prominent Moroccan experts like Professor Rashid YAZAMI (Inventor of the Lithium Battery) (ii) Dr Youssef IDAGHDOUR (Moroccan researcher in Genes at the University of North Carolina in the United States of America) (iii) Professor Shawki Misbah ( Director of first-class research at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France (CNRS)) (iv) Dr Mustafa Kunduz (Moroccan researcher in biology at Wayne State University in the United States of America) Themes on implementing scientific culture in the Moroccan Society were deeply discussed exposing conse-quently the language teaching problematic in the country A presentation was given by Ms Amel introducing the perspective and role of the YES Network concerning the promotion of Earth Sciences among the Society

MoU with PNSO With the curator of President Wang Meng from YES Network science painter Zhao-Chuang has held his grand painting exhi-bition at the Julius Nyrere International Conference Center in Dar es Salaam Tanzania on 11th of August 2014 The theme of the exhibition is ldquoHymns to the Earth mdash the scientific painting exhibition by Zhao-Chuangrdquo and as one of the important con-tents of the 3rd YES Congress the exhibition aims to raise attentions to the diversity of biology through the method of scientific artAs one of the most important results YES Network signed a MoU with PNSO as a base for future collaborations PNSO and KROCEUS who is also the exclusive outdoor clothing manufacturer will support YES Network future scientific events with funding KROCEUS will also offer 30000 USD each two years to set up one award for the best outstanding young earth scientists in the frame of YES Network

YES Network becomes an IUGG Affiliate MemberOn 22 January 2014 the IUGG Secretariat received an application for admission to IUGG as an Affiliate Member from the YES Network The IUGG Executive Committee welcomed this application and it was placed before the IUGG Adhering Bodies in regular status for a vote by correspondence The vote is now complete and the application was accepted Accord-ing to the IUGG Statutes and By-Laws the Affiliate membership of the YES Network is provisional until the next meeting of the IUGG Council in Prague Czech Republic in June 2015 when a final vote will be taken

The 3rd Young Earth Scientists (YES) Congress held at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam Tanzania from 11th to 14th August 2014 was a successful conference along with the 25th Colloquium of African Geology In this congress there were nearly 500 participants including more than 300 registered delegates from 46 countries The theme was ldquoBridging Geo-generations into Global Earth Sciences In-tegrationsrdquo The congress was inaugurated by the Vice-President of Tanzania along with the Minister of Minerals in Tanzania

The congress included 7 parallel sessions in which participants - including earth scientists from academia indus-try geoscience organizations and decision makers - discussed key topics The major topics covered in sessions include Geoscience in Society Mineral and Energy Resources Geohazards Hydrogeology and Climate Change with a special emphasis on the African continent The congress also included workshops on Geoparks Math-ematical Geology Cultural Understanding Workshop (by Joel Gill Director of Geology for Global Development Association) and Geochemistry

Local and International Organizing Committees with sponsors of the YES Congress including policy makers in the country heads of geological organizations and companies supporting the YES Congress

An Art exhibition was displayed all along the meeting exposing Zhao Chuangrsquos works on Dinosaurs and a documentary Movie Pre-miere showed by the PNSO group on ldquoReconstructing and Reflect-ing Lives for Pastrdquo Along with the young researchers there were more than 200 students from various schools who participated in the inaugural ceremony

Several business meetings took place including Earth Science Matters Foundation EC meeting YES Network meet-ings with national chapters and local organizing committees to discuss the perspectives of this third version of the Young Earth-Scientists Congress

Earth Science Matters (ESM)YES hosted the meeting of ESM at the 3rd YES Congress The YES was represented by Ms Amel Barich and Mr Ciro Manzo to discuss about the future collaboration and the Bridges Project

News from the Executive BoardYES Network is now LegalThe YES Network is glad to announce to its membership the registration of the network as a Non-Profit Organiza-tion on November 18th 2014 in Brussels Belgium Thanks to the support of the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and its Secre-tary General Luca Demicheli the YES Network is taking a step forward in becoming a full professional organization The YES secretariat will be hosted in the EGS headquar-ters We look forward to strenghten links with our mem-bership to implement our projects and support in the best way our national chapters around the World always under our motto ldquoEarth Science for Societyrdquo

Upcoming involvements of YES

The YES Network Executive board members and the 35th IGC Geo-host and legacy programmes coordinator Dr Jeannette Mc Gill had a meeting during the 3rd YES Congress discussing how YES Network can get involved actively in the 35thIGC programme YES members are in the Local Organising Committee as well as Scientific Committee of 35th International Geological Congress

YES will be participating in the First Latin American YES symposium in North Eastern Argentina in conjunction with 2nd Latin American congress of students of geology

YES is officially the Media Partner for the 4th International Conference on Earth Science amp Climate Change during June 15-17 2015 at Alicante Spain The YES members are also invited for the Organizing committee of the YES Network and readily accepted to contribute the skills

YES Network Elections 2015The YES Network will be launching elections in 2015 to renew its leadership More details about this will be released in the next few months

YES New Web PlatformAfter registering the network the YES will welcome the year with a new web platform Until 2014 the YES Network website was hosted and co-managed by the American Geoscience Institute (AGI) We thank the AGI for their assistance and we hope the new platform with satisfy our members needs in more communication and networking

Crossing Borders ArticleDiscovery of Spinosaurus in the Moroccan Sahara Following the recent discovery of the first semi-aquatic and largest dinosaur found in Morocco that marked widely the palaeontology field this year Dr NIZAR Ibrahim the paleontologist who discovered it was contacted the Mo-roccan Chapter of the YESNetwork to know more about this dinosaur but also to have his opinion about the Mo-roccan paleontological heritage He has kindly and immediately responded to the interview request and we are glad to feature it in our last issue of the year

1 Can you give us a brief insight on your background and the focus of your research in Palaeontology I am a German-Moroccan paleontologist and comparative anatomist I received my undergraduate degree from the Uni-versity of Bristol (UK) and my PhD from University College Dublin (Ireland) I am now based at the University of Chicago (Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy) My re-search is currently focused on the evolutionary history diver-sity and paleoecology of Cretaceous vertebrates found in North Africa I have also carried out research in the field of bioinfor-matics bridging the fields of genetics anatomy and develop-

2 What was the context of the discovery of the semi-aquatic Spinosaurus How can you describe this dinosaur compared to the other ones already found in Morocco and elsewhere Spinosaurus is unique in many different ways It is the largest predatory dinosaur known to date but more importantly it is the first dinosaur showing unmistakable adaptations for a semi aquatic lifestyle It looked really different from other preda-tory dinosaurs long narrow jaws long neck giant ldquosailrdquo on the back paddle-like feethellip

4 Do you plan to do more ldquoSpinosaurus huntingrdquo in Morocco or in North Africa Morocco is known for its geodiversity especially the palaeontological one How do you perceive the level of valorization of this geoher-itage in the country and how do you think this discovery will impact the palaeontological and more generally the geological society in Morocco Yes the Sahara is full of fossil treasures so in all likelihood I will be working in North Africa for many years to comeMorocco has a very rich paleontological heritage recording key moments of what is without a shadow of a doubt the most incredible story out there the history of life on our planet Unfortunately many Moroccans do not known this I am trying to change this ndash the Spinosaurus discovery is certainly going to help Morocco needs at least 4 or 5 natural history museums to house the many paleontological and zoological treasures the country has to offer I am currently working with Moroccan colleagues and partners on large scale museum projects ndash and I am quite confident that we can move things in the right direction very soon

1 Can you give us a brief insight on your background and the focus of your research in Palaeontology I am a German-Moroccan paleontologist and comparative anatomist I received my undergraduate degree from the Uni-versity of Bristol (UK) and my PhD from University College Dublin (Ireland) I am now based at the University of Chicago (Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy) My re-search is currently focused on the evolutionary history diver-sity and paleoecology of Cretaceous vertebrates found in North Africa I have also carried out research in the field of bioinfor-matics bridging the fields of genetics anatomy and develop-

4 Do you plan to do more ldquoSpinosaurus huntingrdquo in Morocco or in North Africa Morocco is known for its geodiversity especially the palaeontological one How do you perceive the level of valorization of this geoher-itage in the country and how do you think this discovery will impact the palaeontological and more generally the geological society in Morocco Yes the Sahara is full of fossil treasures so in all likelihood I will be working in North Africa for many years to comeMorocco has a very rich paleontological heritage recording key moments of what is without a shadow of a doubt the most incredible story out there the history of life on our planet Unfortunately many Moroccans do not known this I am trying to change this ndash the Spinosaurus discovery is certainly going to help Morocco needs at least 4 or 5 natural history museums to house the many paleontological and zoological treasures the country has to offer I am currently working with Moroccan colleagues and partners on large scale museum projects ndash and I am quite confident that we can move things in the right direction very soon
