PREVENT CERVICAL SPINAL CORD INJURY

INTRODUCTION

Spinal Cord Injury is an alarming

increasing traumatic condition. The

World Health Organization

acknowledges 250-500 thousand

cases each year.1

The health care providers must

implicate in mediatizing the severe

implications of a spinal cord injury

and ensure the awareness of the

general population in order to

prevent accident that can lead to SCI.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The most important thing in preventing spinal

cord injury is knowing the main causes and appeal

to the public to be cautious when implicated in

certain activities.

The most common causes are: auto accidents,

sport accidents, diving, fall from stairs, fall from

wagon, bicycles accidents and falling from a tree.2

In Romania, the major cause for cervical spinal

cord injury is diving in shallow waters, and

members of our Clinic’s Division started a

successful media campaign with a television solo

spot that encouraged the public not to dive in

shallow waters.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONPublicity campaign with the implication of physicians and the media can indeed produce a positive impact

on the general population and consequently prevent imprudent actions which can lead to spinal cord injury.
