By Den DiMarco

At the photography club meeting recently, we learned how to take photos of faces (portraits) that were nicely lighted. The concepts are simple and in this brief article, I’ll try to explain them.

Let’s start with the enemy: Harsh light. In the photograph of the manikin shown

here, you’ll notice that some parts of its face are brightly lit and other parts are markedly dark. As a result, your detail is concealed in both areas. It also causes sharply defined lines where the bright areas

meet the dark areas. The arrows point out these lines. Those lines are bad! For a pleasing portrait, you don’t want them on a person’s face. To get rid of them you need your subject’s face to be lit fairly evenly.

To accomplish this,

Don’t place the person in the sun. Place

the person in the shade If the sun is striking the person’s face

from any direction, try using flash to light up the shadows on the face.

Indoors, don’t use flash in a dimly lit location

Indoors, light your subject from a window where no direct sun is coming in (See Photo 2, area 1)

Outdoors or indoors, position a reflective surface ($10-17) to bounce light back toward the shadowy areas. (See Photo 2, area 2)

Optionally if you have a desk lamp with a cone-shaped reflector, use that to highlight part of the hair of your subject.

(See Photo 2, area 3) Indoors, if you have a movable flash,

aim your flash at the ceiling.

The final photo below was the result of performing some of those steps.

Our Club—A Quick View When we started this club in October

of 2000, our goal was to provide interesting social activities for people over 50 years of age.

Since that time we’ve sponsored

thousands of activities from free concerts in local parks to trips to Hong Kong.

While not intended to be a partnership

meeting place, many of us have found lasting friendships. We’ve noticed that the more involved you are, the more

satisfying the friendships become. As you might expect, we’ve seen our share of marriages as well.

Some other events include dance

parties at local clubs, pinochle games, Kimmel Center concerts, dinners, trips and special interest groups like photography and birding.

We have no limit as to what adventure

might be sponsored. Belonging is lots of fun. Lonely nights tend to disappear.

We provide descriptions of events and current information by way of a monthly newsletter, a web site and a weekly email. We email special changes as needed.

The basis of our club is members

hosting events for other members. That is what keeps the club vibrant and moving forward. So think of something you would like to do or attend, and host it as a club event. We need your participation.
