Sukkot in Biblical Times• Speak to the children of Israel, saying,

"On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the festival of Sukkos, a seven-day period for HaShem. The first day shall be a sacred holiday when you may not do any work. ...The eighth day is a sacred holiday to you... it is an atzeres, you may not do any work. ...

Page 3: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times• On the first day you must take for

yourself a fruit of the citron tree, an unopened palm frond, myrtle branches, and brook willows, and you shall rejoice before HaShem for seven days. ...

Page 4: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times• You shall dwell in sukkos for seven

days.... it is a permanent regulation, generation after generation… So that your future generations shall know that I had the children of Israel live in sukkos when I brought them out of Egypt..

• (Leviticus) 23:34-43

Sukkot in Biblical Times The Feast of Tabernacles is by far theש

most festive and joyous of occasions. The Feasts were given to Israel withinש

the boundaries of their relationship to God.

The Fall Feasts reflect three aspects ofשour relationship with God:

Page 6: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical TimesRosh Hashanah – Days of TrumpetsשRepentanceש

Yom Kippur – Day of AtonementשRedemptionש

Sukkot – Feast of TabernaclesשRejoicingש

Page 7: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times Sukkot was celebrated following theש

outline in Leviticus:

They lived in booths made of boughs ofשtrees and branches of palm trees for the seven days of the feast (Lev. 23:42).

They rested from all regular work on theשfirst and eighth days.

Page 8: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times Sukkot was celebrated following theש

outline in Leviticus:

The Priest offered sacrifices on the sevenשdays, beginning with thirteen bullocks and other animals on the first day and diminishing by one bullock each day until, on the seventh, seven bullocks were offered.

Page 9: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times Sukkot was celebrated following theש

outline in Leviticus:

On the eighth day there was a solemnשassembly when one bullock, one ram, and seven lambs were offered (Num. 29:36). The sacrifices offered during this time amounted to 189 animals.

Page 10: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times Sukkot was celebrated following theש

outline in Leviticus:

Men carried the cluster of branches to theשsynagogue to wave as they rejoiced before the Lord, as commanded by the Lord (Lev. 23:40).

Page 11: Yeshua in Succot

Sukkot in Biblical Times Water was also an important part of theש

Feast of Tabernacles. .This ceremony lasted seven daysש The last day was called Hosha’naש

Rabba -- Day of the Great Hosanna.Priests blew trumpets & waved branchesש-People sang the Great Hallel (Psalms 113ש

118)

Sukkot In The Future The Feast of Sukkot will be celebratedש

in the Millinial Reign of Messiah Yeshua

Zec 14:16 - Finally, everyone remainingשfrom all the nations that came to attack Yerushalayim will go up every year to worship the king, ADONAI-Tzva'ot, and to keep the festival of Sukkot.

Page 13: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkah The core of the symbols in Sukkot isש

the Sukkah – The Booth.

…The symbols point to relationshipש

Page 14: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkah The Sukkah is a temporary structureש

which reminds us of two things.. The wanderings of our forefathers in theש

wilderness all the while surrounded by God’s presence which brought His provision.

The transience of this life and that the onlyשpermanence and true protection is in His presence and love.

Page 15: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkah of Yahwah – Our Protection The Sukkah also reminds us ofש

Yahwah’s protection over us…

Psalm 27:5 For he will conceal me in hisשshelter (sukkah) on the day of trouble, he will hide me in the folds of his tent, he will set me high on a rock.

Page 16: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkah of Yahwah – Our Protection The Sukkah also reminds us ofש

Yahwah’s protection over us… Psalm ,But oh, how great is your goodness 31:19ש

which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you do for those who take refuge in you, before people's very eyes!

In the shelter of your presence you 31:20שhide them from human plots, you conceal them in your shelter (sukkah - hkko ) , safe from contentious tongues.

Page 17: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkah The Sukkah is built with a living roofש

open to the stars. Green palm leaves arranged so that theש

stars can be seen at night.Greenery because HaShem is a God of Lifeש.Stars because HaShem is a God of Lightש

Page 18: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkahש Life and Light…ש Genesis 1:4

And God saw that the light was good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it; and God separated the light from the darkness.

ש John 1:4In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.

Page 19: Yeshua in Succot

The Sukkahש Life and Light…ש Genesis 1:14

   Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;

ש John 1:14    And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Lulav And Etrog And you shall take for you on the firstש

day, the fruit of the tree ‘hadar’ and branches of palm trees, and a bough of the tree avot and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Hashem, your G-d, seven days. Leviticus Chapter 23:40

The Lulav And Etrog

Page 22: Yeshua in Succot

The Lulav And Etrogש Symbolism of the Four Species ש The "Etrog," the Citron, resembles in its shape, the

heart, the driving force behind all our actions. ש The "Lulav," the Palm Branch, resembles the spine,

which holds the body together and, without which, we would be unable to move.

ש The "Hadasim," the Myrtle Branches, resemble, in their almond-shape, the eyes, with which we behold G-d's World.

ש And the "Aravot," the Willow Branches, resemble the lips, with which we give expression to our thoughts and feelings.

Page 23: Yeshua in Succot

The Lulav And Etrogש Symbolism of the Four Species of Men ש The "Etrog" has both a pleasant taste and a pleasant

aroma, symbolizing one who possesses both the blessings of knowledge of Torah and of good deeds.

ש The "Lulav," the branch of a tree (the date palm) the fruit of which has good taste but no aroma, symbolizes the person who has Torah knowledge but not good deeds.

ש The "Hadas," the myrtle, which has pleasant aroma only, symbolizes the person who has good deeds but not Torah.

ש And the "Aravah," the willow branch, which has neither pleasant taste nor pleasant aroma, symbolizes the person who has neither Torah nor good deeds.

Page 24: Yeshua in Succot

The Lulav And Etrog While the priest waved the Lulav theש

people sang the Great Hallel – Hosanna – from Psalms 113 – 118 .

This reminds us of another time whenשPalm branches were waved and Hosanna was sang…

Page 25: Yeshua in Succot

The Lulav And EtrogJohn 12:13ש

(The people) Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: B lessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Page 26: Yeshua in Succot

The Water Libation Water was also an important part of theש

Feast of Tabernacles. Gold pitchers of water were broughtש

from the pool of Siloam to the temple. The Priest would pour out the waterש

over the altar..The priest would recite Isaiah 12:1-3ש Therefore with joy shall ye draw water“ש

out of the wells of salvation.”

Page 27: Yeshua in Succot

The Water Libation On the last day and greatest day of theש

Feast of Tabernacles (the day the Rabbis poured the water) Jesus stood and proclaimed Himself the very fountain of living water in John 7:37-38.

Page 28: Yeshua in Succot

The Water Libation John 7:37- 38ש

Now on the last day of the festival, Hoshana Rabbah, Yeshua stood and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him keep coming to me and drinking!    Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!"

Page 29: Yeshua in Succot

The Temple Light Show After the water ceremony, during theש

evening, special festivities called Simchat Bet HaShoevah [happiness of the house of the water-drawing] occurred.

During this time the four toweringשmenorahs were lit up and the priests would put on a "light show," performing torch dances while the Levites sang and played music.

Page 30: Yeshua in Succot

The Temple Light Show He who has not"ש

seen the rejoicing at the Simchat Bet Hasheavah, has never seen rejoicing in his life" (Sukkah 5:1).

Page 31: Yeshua in Succot

The Temple Light Showש It was also

during this time of Sukkot that Yeshua the Mashiach revealed Himself to be the Light of the world.

Page 32: Yeshua in Succot

The Temple Light Show John 8:12ש

Yeshua spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light which gives life."

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Conception of Yochanan (John theש

Baptist) / Luke 1:5-25 1Chron. 24 tells us that the Leviticalש

priesthood was divided into 12 divisions of priests.

Josephus (Antiquities 7) tells us that eachשdivision served for a period of one week.

The first division began its period ofשservice on the first day of the year — 1 Nisan

Page 34: Yeshua in Succot

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Conception of Yochanan (John theש

Baptist) / Luke 1:5-25 As Zekharyah was in the division of Aviyahש

(Luke 1:5), his term of service began in early Spring on the first day of the eighth week (27th of Ayyar) and ran for one week through the 4th of Sivan.

The angel, Gavri-El, appeared to Zachar'yahשas he was ministering in the Temple.

The following week (5-11 Sivan) wasשShavuot, the Feast of Pentecost.

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? / The Conception of Yeshua (Jesus)ש

Luke 1:26-55 Near the end of the sixth month ofש

Elisheva’s pregnancy the angel Gavri'el appeared to Miryam and told her about Elisheva saying, “this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.”

,Miryam immediately left Natzeret (verse 39ש“with haste”) and went to the “hill country” near Jerusalem to the home of Zekharyah and Elisheva.

Chanukah – Festival of Lightsש

Page 36: Yeshua in Succot

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Birth of Yochanan/Luke1:56-80ש The prophet Mal'akhi (Malachi) tells us thatש

Eliyah (Elijah) the prophet must come to prepare the hearts of the fathers and their children before Mashiach comes.

Therefore, in anticipation of the coming ofשMashiach, when Pesach (Passover) is celebrated, a place at the table is set and a cup of wine is poured for Eliyah (Elijah), and the door of the house is left open so that he may come in to the celebration.

Page 37: Yeshua in Succot

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Birth of Yochanan/Luke1:56-80ש For centuries before the birth of Messiahש

the Jews had been anticipating the return of Eliyah during Pesach.

The way in which Gavri'el worded hisשannouncement to Zekharyah makes it clear that Yochanan was to be the fulfillment of Mal'akhi’s prophecy:

Page 38: Yeshua in Succot

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Birth of Yochanan/Luke1:56-80ש He will turn many of the children of“ש

Yisra'el to the Lord, their God. He will go before his face in the spirit and power of Eliyah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Page 39: Yeshua in Succot

Was Messiah Born on Sukkot? The Birth of Yochanan/Luke1:56-80ש.A full term pregnancy term is 41 weeks •ש There are 27 weeks in the first six months •ש

(two trimesters) of pregnancy. There are 27 weeks from the spring •ש

service of of Abiyah to Chanukah. There are 14 weeks remaining to •ש

accomplish the last trimester and bring    the pregnancy to full term.

There are exactly 14 weeks from •שChanukah to Passover (Nisan 14-22).
