P SALM 121 י: אשא עיני אל־ההרים מאין יבא עזר

E-sa ei-nai el he-ha-rim mei-a-yin ya-vo ez-ri. Ez-ri mei-im A-do-nai, o-sei sha-ma-yim va-a-retz.  I lift up my eyes to the mountains: what is the source of my                            help?

My help will come from the Eternal, Maker of heaven and earth. God will not allow your foot to slip;

your Guardian will not slumber. Behold, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

The Eternal is your Keeper, the Eternal is your shade at your                        right hand.

The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The                            Eternal will guard you from all evil, and will protect your being.

The Eternal will guard you, coming and going, from this time                      forth, and forever.

A psalm of David:   The Eternal is my shepherd; I shall not want. You make me lie                          down in green pastures; You lead me beside still waters; you                      restore my soul. You guide me in straight paths for the sake of                          Your name. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the                      shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod                            and Your staff—they comfort me. You spread a table before                    me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with                        oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness                shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the                              house of the Eternal forever.

O God full of compassion, Eternal Spirit of the universe, grant                      perfect rest under the wings of Your Presence to .........................                    who has entered eternity. Source of Mercy, let him (her) find                      refuge for ever in the shadow of Your wings, and let his (her)                          soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life. The Eternal God                          is his (her) inheritance. May he (she) rest in peace, and let us                          say: Amen.

B EFORE T HE K ADDISH When cherished ties are broken, and the chain of love is                      shattered, only trust and the strength of faith can lighten the                      heaviness of the heart; but love and understanding can help us                      pass through the darkness toward the light.   Out of affliction the Psalmist learned the law of God. And in                        truth, grief is a great teacher, when it sends us back to serve                          and bless the living. We learn how to counsel and comfort                      those who, like ourselves, are bowed with sorrow. We learn                    when to keep silence in their presence, and when a word will                        assure them of our love and concern.  Thus, even when they are gone, the departed are with us,                      moving us to live as, in their higher moments, they themselves                      wished to live. We remember them now; they live in our                      hearts; they are an abiding blessing.   In reciting the Kaddish we affirm our awareness of holiness in                      our world. Much of our experience of divine goodness, grace                    and love has come to us through those whose lives have                      touched our own. We invoke the transcendent power of love                    and caring as we sanctify God’s name.

Let the glory of God be extolled, and God’s great name be                        hallowed in the world whose creation God willed. May God                    rule in our own day, in our own lives, and in the life of all                              Israel, and let us say: Amen.   Let God’s great name be blessed forever and ever.   Beyond all the praises, songs, and adorations that we can utter                      is the Holy One, the Blessed One, whom yet we glorify, honor,                        and exalt. And let us say: Amen.   For us and for all Israel, may the blessing of peace and the                          promise of life come true, and let us say: Amen.  May the One who causes peace to reign in the high heavens,                        cause peace to reign among us, all Israel, and all the world, and                          let us say: Amen. May the Source of peace send peace to all who mourn, and                        comfort to all who are bereaved. Amen.

Holocaust Memorial Torah Scroll   The history of our Holocaust Memorial Torah Scroll returns us                    to when the Nazis deported the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia,                      confiscating religious items like Torahs. The Nazi plan, after                  murdering all the Jews, was to put these items in a "Museum of                          the Extinct Jewish Race." These scrolls were carefully                documented and stored in the old Czech Synagogue of Michle.                    When the Nazis were defeated, however, the scrolls came                  under the control of the State Jewish Museum in Prague. Sadly,                      the scrolls began to deteriorate because of poor storage and                    inadequate funds for repair.    In 1963, the scrolls came to the attention of the Westminster                      Synagogue in London. All of the Torahs were transferred from                    Prague to London where they were catalogued and assessed.                  Torahs that were in good condition were made available to                    congregations throughout the world. Although the            communities these Torahs had come from were destroyed,                Jewish communities around the world now welcomed the                Torahs into thriving Jewish communities. Of the 1,297 Czech                  Torah scrolls catalogued in London, 692 have been sent to                    synagogues and other Jewish Institutions; 466 are in the United                    States, 61 in Israel, 90 in Great Britain, 16 in Australia, and the                          remaining scrolls are in places including New Zealand and                  Argentina.   Temple Sinai is proud to have, on permanent loan, a Czech                      Holocaust Memorial Torah Scroll from the town of                Golcuv-Jenikov. Through the continued use of this Torah, we                  honor the memory of the community of Golcuv-Jenikov and                  keep its spirit alive.   On Shavuot evening 5763 (2003), Temple Sinai member Sandy                  Cohen presented a new cover for the Holocaust Memorial                  Torah. This beautiful Torah cover incorporates pieces of fabric                  donated by members of the Temple Sinai community into the

20

Page 21: Yizkor - Temple Sinai

leaves of a golden Tree of Life. The fabric pieces include scraps                        from clothes worn at special celebrations like a wedding, bris or                      naming ceremony, or Bar or Bat Mitzvah and fabric from                    Purim costumes, holiday tablecloths, chuppah covers, kippot              (yarmulkes) and tallitot (prayer shawls). This memorial scroll                that honors our Jewish past is now draped in a mantle that                        represents the special, joyous occasions of a vital Jewish                  community.
