WelcomeWhat a Great BritainNow there is not many countries can boast that, whether we win gold medals or win the European Cup the record will be hard to beat. The Olympic torch has been through Bewdley and the crowds turned out in the hundreds to see this once in a lifetime event. Not the best organisation in the world, with the traffic fighting it’s way through the crowds, but to be fair no one expected to be this to be such an attraction so it probably caught the organisers by surprise. The television coverage of the Jubilee events, although hampered by the torrential rain, with the highlight being the boats on the river Thames. With the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh along with other members of the royal family stood for hours while the flotilla sailed by.The Royal barge looked resplendent being adorned in gold and red, but needed the bright sunlight to really do it justice in the gloom.

The Football ended in disappointment but the Tour de France ended with a triumph.

The Olympics has now started and we can only hope for our Olympians to do their best, but the organisation of security left a lot to be desiredWe can only hope the rain will stop!

We know how important it is to de-liver your products to the customer on time. As transport logistic manager for a large print company it was crucial that our goods reached the customer on time. Whether you want one box moved, a pallet, a large piece of furniture, or Ebay item we are just a phone call away. We believe we will not be beat-en on the price and more competitive than the large companies as our over-heads are lower. For any company wishing to use our services on a regular basis we have a

priority service were you can register your company and open an account that way you take precedence when you require an urgent delivery.Email us on [email protected] and ask for a registration form so we can be at your premises when you are ready for us to take your first delivery. We have a fixed price policy with no added extras so you know how much it will cost and be able to inform your customer if you charge for delivery. We offer excellent service and have a regular driver available with aDigi-Card who can drive your 7.5 tonne vehicle if your driver is on holiday.

Over the past decade, online dating has gone from being something that was frowned upon or considered a little kooky or even dangerous, to something that most people think is a normal way to meet a partner,In fact, a recent survey by the Oxford Internet Institute reveals that over a third of us have tried online dating, with users in their 40s and above being the most likely to have signed up to a dating website. For women in particular, the attractions of online dating often revolve around security issues and intentional dating rather than leaving things to chance. Whereas younger people are more likely to take an attitude of “I’ll meet someone at some point”, older people are far more focused on finding a partner by actively going out and looking, rather than passively waiting for a poten-tial mate to appear in their life. The rise of online dating in the UK appears a trend which is likely to continue over the next few years, as more and more people meet their partners through this medium and success stories continue to come out.Brand new dating website Love is Dating has just launched with the aim of bringing together more UK couples.Spokewoman Karen Barr says “Ten years ago, if you told some-one that you met your partner online, you would often be the recipient of a shocked look or some rather prurient questions.”But as the internet has become so much more a part of people’s lives, internet dating has lost that sort of nerdy or seedy aura that it

used to have and is now accepted as a very efficient and safe way to meet po-tential partners.”In another 10 years’ time we might all be asking not ‘How did you meet?’ but ‘What site did you meet on?’ We believe the right relationship makes you happy. And everyone needs a little happi-ness in their lives.”But there’s no point in joining an online dating site if you aren’t proactive. It’s no good putting together the perfect profile and then sitting waiting for the emails to come flooding in.If you want to get back in the dating game, you have to email the people who you find attractive. Don’t worry if they don’t reply - there are plenty more fish in the virtual sea. It’s also important to tailor your email. A generic copy and paste job can be detected a mile off and is pretty insulting. Put a bit of time in and make it personal - it’s much more likely to pay off. But remember not to tell them your life story! At this stage it’s advisable not to mention your ex - it’s a sure sign that you’re still focused on a past relationship.Use that first email as a chance to spark their curiosity. Keep it clean, polite and to the point - and throw in a little hu-mour if possible. It is supposed to be fun!

The English summer garden is a delight for the senses, with roses often tak-ing pride of place amongst the fragrant blooms. Sacred to the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, roses have always been ex-changed as tokens of affection between lovers and it was said that Cleopatra first made love to Marc Anthony on a bed of red rose petals. In Tudor times ladies would sew scented rose petals into the hems of their dresses to help them attract a wealthy suitor, whilst rose scented puddings and sweet meats symbolised the height of Elizabethan decadence. In addition to their association with love,

roses have been used as a beauty aid for millennia and are said to both tone and provide a youthful bloom to ageing skin. Rose petal tea can provide many health benefits. It acts as a digestive aid, helping to relieve nausea, vomiting and constipa-tion. It strengthens the nervous system thereby helping to combat insomnia, exhaustion and nervousness. It is particu-larly indicated for the female reproductive system where the severity of menopausal and PMS symptoms can be dramatically reduced. (Please note Rose Petal Tea should not be taken during pregnancy)

Last month it was retaining water as we were heading for a drought. This month it is all change and the emphasise is on preventing flooding. Keeping the water butts filled is not going to be a problem in the short term but it is still worth purchasing water butts and filling them with any waste water from the washing up bowl, or bath water should

you want to bucket this out of the bath, you will be able to use this to water any new plants and seedlings instead of using

the hose pipe as at the moment the hose pipe ban still remains in force.Saving water is essential to the gardener so when planting new

borders try finding plants which require less watering like

geraniums.As well as saving

water it may save

money in the long run if you are on a water meter. For baskets and planters purchase a watering system which regulates the amount of water you are using and saves time by setting it to water during the night. Never water during the day when the sun is high as this will just evaporate before it has soaked into the soil.If you have a driveway of block paving or slabs, mix a solution of weed killer and liberally dowse the paths so it creeps down into the cracks which will prevent weeds coming through. Follow the instructions and don’t use the weed killer during windy weather as it may spray onto the beds.

Well at least while it is raining it may be the best time to get into the shed and give the mower a full service.

Fun in the gardenThroughout the year

It occurred to me not so very long ago, during my short stay on this planet we call home, how many people I’ve met and the influ-ence certain people have had on my life – some good, some bad !!

I’m not that sad that I’ve tried to quantify how many people have played a part in creating the “me” I see in the mirror every morning, the math would probably drive me insane. Based on my past schools, places of work and social events it must figure in the thousands, but I am aware of the handful of individuals who stand out in my mind. The ones who stand head and shoulders above the crowd I suppose and I think it’s safe to say that we can all relate to this – people who play their part...This line of thought expands beyond shap-ing you or I to those who have changed the World and the way we think – for-ever. Truly inspirational folk who will be remembered far beyond their life spans. In a way, I suppose we ALL want to be remembered - what will you have as your epitaph ???

This month, in part 1 of a two part fea-ture, I’d like to take a look at the handful of men (sorry ladies) who have shaped the world of technology and computing beyond even what, I suspect, even they imagined !!

Thomas J. Watson Senior, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, Mark Elliott Zucker-

berg, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs (and Steve Wozniak), Richard Branson and Pierre Omidyar.Thomas J Watson Snr – Claim to fame = Founder of IBM. I suspect most of you have heard of IBM (International Business Machines), but have you ever stopped to wonder where we would be today if IBM hadn’t invented the first PC !!! Despite the fact companies like Dell, Sony, Acer etc have totally took the techno-bull by the virtual horns, it was IBM who first devel-oped the basic structure of the PC we all love (and hate) today. Ironically, with an estimated 900 million to 1 billion PER-SONAL computers in the World (which doesn’t account for those used in business !!), Watson is RUMOURED to have stated in 1943 – “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers”, but the quote has never been substantiated...Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee – Claim to fame = Inventor of the World Wide Web. Knighted in 2004 for his pioneer-ing work, born in 1955 and an acclaimed MIT Professor and Computer Scientist, Tim developed the first “website” which went live 6th August 1991. In a little over twenty years, the web has grown to around 612 million websites, a rise of 30 million since February of this year. Interestingly, the number of ACTIVE sites is only 185 million which means the vast majority are registered domain names, but not imple-mented. The World Wide Web has certain-

ly changed the way we communicate, do business and run our lives. Hard to believe all this has happened in 21 years and was the inspiration of one man.

Mark Elliott Zuckerberg – Claim to fame = Creator of Facebook. With an estimated personal fortune of approx 20 billion dollars and Facebook currently valued at around 100 billion, Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in the history of the World. At 28 years old, the man is respon-sible for probably THE most successful socially interactive website ever created. Married his childhood sweetheart on May 19th 2012 and the subject of an award winning movie “The Social Network”, Zuckerberg has been the brunt of a great deal of legal wrangling since he first cre-ated thefacebook.com with the help of Sean Parker, one of the brains behind the

controversial file sharing website NAP-STER. With over 900,000 registered users Worldwide (and set to reach a billion by the end of 2012 !!) unless something dra-matic happens, I think it’s safe to say that Facebook is going to be with us for quite a while yet and love it or loathe it, it’s cer-tainly making the World seem a whole lot smaller by putting us in touch with long lost family and friends, which can’t be a bad thing I suppose.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin – Claim to fame = Co-founders of Google. If you haven’t heard of Google, maybe it’s time to get back to your cave !! Probably the most well known website ever created, in the 15 years since its creation, Google has gone from strength to strength, having bought several companies along the way including YoutTube. They are also respon-sible for creating the Android operating system used on smart phones, tablets etc. Difficult to define their net worth due to the complexity of their operation, but said to be in the region of 200 billion dollars with its founders, a personal fortune in excess of 17 billion dollars each.

Blooming Lovely! It’s baby boom time at West Midland Sa-fari Park with the arrival of five tiny baby ring-tailed Lemurs. The babies range from one to threeweeks old and are now big enough to be seen hitching a lift with mum in the recently opened

“Walking with Lemurs” exhibit.

The exhibit is the largest lemur walk through in the UK and is home to 20 ring-tailed lemurs, 3 white-fronted brown lemurs and 3 red-bellied lemurs, which are native of Mada-gascar. Of all the lemurs in the exhibit the ring-tailed are the most flamboyant and sociable. They appear to have boundless energy and yet still enjoy spending a lot of their time foraging mainly on the ground. This is good news for visitors as it pro-vides endless photo opportunities and the chance to get face to face with these ador-able little animals.

Bob Lawrence, Director of Wildlife said, “The lemurs have become one ofthe favourite animals at the Park. They are

totally fascinating and often display some of the most unusual behaviour. The way they care for their young is quite captivat-ing, too. A new baby in the troop is oftenthe cause of great excitement amongst the other females that enjoy nothing more than taking their turn at a spot of groom-ing”.

“Walking with Lemurs” forms part of the African Village exhibit andconsists of a natural woodland walk which is located in an area beside an original

lake in grounds land-scaped by Capability Brown that date back to the 1800’s. The le-murs have free range of the woodland.

The facility includes purpose built animal housing, pathways, natural log visitor seating and a

programme of daily talks.

“Walking with Lemurs” and the African Village is open daily and is included as part of the standard admission charge of £14.99 for adults, £12.99 for children.

Admission prices also include a free return ticket. Amusement rides charged extra in all cases. Further informationis available from the Park’s official web-

site www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone

CORGIS SEEN ON SAFARI ?A mystery has been unveiled by staff at West Midland Safari ParkFollowing claims of visitors seeing corgis on safari. Indeed as royalcelebrations are on the mind of visitors to the Park, they could beforgiven for thinking that the latest exhibit in the animal reserve isthe Pembroke Corgi.

Whilst a Pembroke Corgi Corner would be appropriate for the JubileeWeekend, in truth the animal that looks rather like a long-legged corgi is the dhole (pronounced dole).

The new pack of five dholes - two females and three males - can be found in the Wild Wood, that forms part of the four mile safari.

Unlike the Corgi, dhole are classified as endangered and originate from southern Asia where they live in large packs of up to forty. In the wild, they have established a hunting technique that can result inchases lasting for hours and is testament to their phenomenal stamina.Nonetheless, they are similar in size to that of a well-bred corgi.

Whereas the corgi may not be quite so agile, dholes are and have developed the great skill of being able to jump vertically two metres into the air. Apart from looking very photogenic, dholes do have amysterious side. They make a variety of extraordinary sounds to communicate with each other. These range from an eerie whistle and mew, to a high-pitched scream. Sometimes they even cluck like a chicken.

Bob Lawrence, Director of Wildlife said, “It is a case of when visitorsdrive through our wooded area in the ani-mal reserves, they will have asurprise. When the dholes are relaxing in the grass they do look similar to the Pembroke Corgi and since the Park has just hosted our first Royal visit, who knows? The largest surprise however may be that there is thought to be less than 2,500 dhole left in the wild today”.

The dholes can be seen every day through-out the Jubilee holiday in the self-drive Safari which is included as part of the standard admission charge of £14.99 for adults, £12.99 for children. Admission prices also include a free return ticket.

Amusement rides charged extra in allcases. Further information is available from the Park’s official website

Beauty may be skin deep or in the eye of the beholder but the revenue generated from it are huge. Whether it is perfumes, skin creams or facial cosmetic preceedures, the women of the world are well catered for.The modern man has now a slice of the action with the cosmetic companies cashing in on how the male of the specie should look and smell with the vanity theory being put to the test with many surgical procedures now conducted on them.Take many of the famous film and television stars of the early years like James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Clint Eastwood. The by word was rugged and handsome dating actresses which fell for those incredibly sultry looks. The pretty boys like James dean or Rock Hudson would have never considered skin creams or surgical procedures as a way of appealing to the opposite sex. So the photographic studios may have conjured up lighting and shadow to enhance facial features but in my opinion that is as far as it went.

Today we follow the trend, mostly instilled by film. Television and now the Internet, that we must all look less flawed and more appealing and the cosmetic

industry are rolling out more and more potions to satisfy the demand.

Many beauties now cater for male clients either in procedures or products, with

courses available by most colleges in the training.

It will soon be main stream for men to have their nails filed and polished, pedicures, waxing and soothing massages when visiting the hair dressers for that all important grooming of the hair.

So going to the office or out on a date may be a little extreme but it seems men are catching up with the techniques used by women to enhance their looks.

Just a faze or mainstream, who can tell but the cosmetics industry feels that

investment in the modern man will certainly reap rewards

So watch out girls “Here come the Boys” as the song says.

Looked at the programme Rogue Traders and rip off Britain and you may feel this is something that happens to other people.

I decided to buy a second hand tyre for my van to save some money in these recession led times, and you guessed it, hadn’t gone but a few miles after passing the MOT and the tyre started vibrating.Changed the wheel on the side of the motorway, bit frighten-ing that was, and the following day took the tyre back to where it was purchased. They didn’t want to know! Said “You have gone over a bump in the road and tyres aren’t made to go over bumps in the road.” Not a tyre expert but my other wheels and tyres have held up over the last few years. That teaches me a lesson, don’t use anyone who sells second hand tyres.

Leveson inquiry

So do we know how much the Leveson inquiry is costing? Still, suppose it is the tax payer who is footing the bill, but will we

get anything out of it.Is anyone interested what Murdoch has been up too. Seems the Celebrity’s have made a few quid out of it and all the lawyers so they are very happy.

It’s not all doom and gloom! I only use tradesmen whoadvertise in the magazine and having a Baxi Combi Boiler, which is totally unreliable despite a world renown name, it broke down and I needed a plumber who could repair it straight away, without it costing me a fortune. Friday night and looking forward to a weekend of no heat or hot water, NJK plumbing and Heat-ing sent an engineer straight away and fixed the problem in no time at all. So if it’s a plumber you want I can recommend them and it didn’t cost a fortune. Great service.

Two of the most memorable speakers I have heard didn’t adhere to the normal conventions for a public speaker

The first was the Olympic athlete, Kriss Akabusi. Before he started he warned the audience that he got excited when he was on stage and then spoke very quickly, very loudly, and as a result, tended to spit quite a lot! The front row looked alarmed. I cannot comment on his spitting but he certainly spoke loudly and very quickly. So quickly at times that the actual words were almost incoherent. But oddly, that didn’t really matter because the message still came over very effectively. He is like a man possessed on the stage. He never stops moving, clearly living every moment of the story that he tells. I have no idea what he feels like afterwards but after being in the room with him for an hour I was utterly exhausted. Others who have heard him have confirmed the need to lie down in dark room after the experience.

The second speaker was in complete contrast. Bob Geldof had been guest speaker at a business lunch. He then spoke at an open session afterwards. He started by asking if any of us had been at the lunch, and was then very rude about the quality of the food. The event organiser looked very uncomfortable! He spoke very

briefly before saying that he preferred to answer questions. After each question was asked there was silence. Maybe no more than ten or a dozen seconds but it seemed like an eternity. And then he spoke to give a comprehensive and lengthy answer.

In different ways these two contrasting speakers broke the rules, or at least prevailing conventions, but both were effective and, as I commented at the outset, memorable. Akabusi brought power, personality and passion to his presentation. He is an extraordinary communicator. Geldof had the self-assurance to be comfortable with silence while he thought carefully about the questions that had been asked, whereas most of us start to speak before we know what we want to say. Or, perhaps more often, before we have listened properly to what the questioner is asking.

There are no rules for speaking. Just guidelines to help us be more effective. But sometimes ignoring them completely can have considerably more impact.
