YMCA SUMMER CAMPS
NEW YORK CITY’S YMCA | 2018 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE ymcanyc.org/camp
OUR VISION
Active, engaged New Yorkers
building stronger communities.
OUR MISSION
We’re here for all New Yorkers —
to empower youth, improve health,
and strengthen community.
ONE YMCA, A WORLD OF OPTIONS...Dear Parents and Guardians,
At YMCA summer camps, children learn leadership skills and develop self-confidence in a safe, accepting, and stimulating environment. They also build robots, go on field trips, shoot hoops, learn to swim, make new friends, and laugh all summer long!
Our creative, educational camp programming — structured around the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility — helps campers reach their fullest potential, physically, mentally, and emotionally. All Y camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). The Y ensures that children’s learning and development extends beyond the school year, enriching and complementing their education.
New York City’s YMCA offers a wide range of engaging summer day and sleepaway camp options that accommodate all families. You’ll find programs convenient to home and work, and programs that meet your child’s interests and abilities. Children can enroll in just a few weeks at camp, or spend the entire summer with us. All Y camps feature:
• Well-trained staff who serve as positive role models
• Activities and games that develop self-esteem and leadership skills
• Activities that promote cultural diversity
• Lessons in conservation and protecting our environment
• Exposure to new age-appropriate, challenging, and fun experiences
• An atmosphere that fosters fairness, teamwork, and cooperation
• Visits to the city’s top attractions, including zoos, aquariums, parks, and museums
• Health, exercise, and nutrition education
Last year, the Y proudly served more than 12,000 campers in New York City, where we’ve been helping parents and their children have the best summer ever since 1885.
We’re excited to embark on another summer of fun and learning with you and your children. Thank you for choosing summer camp at New York City’s YMCA. We look forward to getting to know your camper!

They participate in various sports, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Super Hero Day, and learn about science, technology, engineering, and math during each session.
Research has shown that children may lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA helps children retain and expand the academic skills they develop during the school year by offering interactive programs such as Book of the Week, journaling, science experiments, and math lessons. These lessons come alive with exciting field trips to museums and science centers across New York City that spark creativity and imagination in everyday learning, the YMCA way!

(For youth in first grade and above in September 2018) Day Campers will engage in activities that will enhance their social and emotional skills, help keep their academ-ics on track, keep them physically active, and challenge them to learn new things every day. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and take exciting trips throughout New York City. Campers will participate in a wide range of sports, instructional swimming, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Crazy Hat Day and Super Hero Day. In addition, campers will engage in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math activities during each session. Research has shown that children can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and partici-pate in facilitated discussions. In addition, activities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize educational enrichment.

Small group sizes (six campers per cabin), low staff-to-camper ratios, and staff chosen for their experi-ence working with younger children ensure campers have a safe, nurturing and fun first camp experience. Campers explore a wide range of activities including swimming, archery, arts and crafts, field games of every variety, canoeing, hiking, and much more. Friendships form and deepen as cabin groups become like family. Each day brings more opportunities for shared meals, new experi-ences, outdoor adventures, and late night laughter.

Just up the hill from Camp McAlister, Camp Talcott provides the perfect next step for pre-teens and young teenagers ready to expand their horizons. After sampling a wide range of camp activities in the first days of each session, Talcott campers can choose their favorites each week to explore more deeply. With an eye toward developing our future staff, we focus on fostering responsibility, confidence, and leadership skills among campers, while simultaneous-ly ensuring a fantastic time!

This program combines formal leadership training, service learning opportunities, and daily practical experience working with small groups of children. C.I.T.'s acquire skills to become responsible, thoughtful, and creative leaders. These positions require a mandatory training session and a two-week minimum commitment.
