Thisisoneofthoseannoyingholidayswhereyou
worklikeaslave(unpaidandlikelyunshowered)for
days,onlytoproduceamealthatwillbeeatenin19
minutesflat.Yourkitchenwillbetrashedandthe
housewilllooklikeatornadohitafterthewhole
affairisover.Thanksgiving?Thanksforwhat???

whatintheworldI’mreallythankfulfor.Itseems

seemstoneedmorethanathimblefulofsleepeachnight.I’vehadbig-timesleep
deprivationforover8years.Inarow.Andyet…thesearejustminorirritantsinmy
dailylife.
Thesethings,intheend,don’tmeanawholelot.There’sjusttoomuchgoingonin
theworldnowadaystogetupsetbylittlestufflikefoodandsleep.Withhurricanes,
tornadoes,floods,fires,severethunderstorms,tsunamis,earthquakes,displaced
families,terrorism,birdflu,heartbreakfromoneendoftheworldtoanother,mychoiceforthequoteoftheyearisfromTheTonightShow ’shost,JayLeno,who
said,“ArewesurethisisagoodtimetotakeGodoutofthePledgeofAllegiance?”
He’scertainlygotapoint.Thenewsduringtheselastfewmonthshasbeenrife
withstrife.Butasweenterintotheholidayseason,it’seasytogetsofrazzledand
unfocusedthatweforgetthereasonbehindtheseason.WhenwetakeGodoutof
theequation,itreducesholidayslikeThanksgivingtoameaninglessexercise.It’s
notaboutfootballandfulltummies.
I’mthankfulIhaveaGodwhoknowsmefullyandstilllovesme,aGodwhocares
aboutthelittledetailsinmylife.Iknowtherearemanyintheworldwhomaren’tasfortunateasus.Peoplewhowouldbethankfulforevenatinyportionofthe
feastwe’llhavethisyearonThanksgiving,muchlesstheplentywehavefromday
today.
SowhenI’mwashingmymillionthdish,orfoldingmybillionthpileoflaundry,or
cleaningupthetrillionthmessinthehouse,maybeIcandosowithalittlemore
grace.BecausewhenIdostoplongenoughtocountmyblessings,youknowwhat?
I’vegotplentytobethankfulfor.
