Report from Noac 2009By Mark Fitzgerald

NOAC 2009 was one of the most enjoyable events that I have attended during my involvement in Scouting. While I was forced to travel to this great event as part of another contingent along with my brother, it was still one of the best scouting experiences of my life. Only the OA could put on such an event as this summer’s NOAC was, and I can assure everyone that there is no reason to go to National Jamboree as long as there are NOAC’s being held. NOAC, or the National Order of the Arrow Conference, was held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana this year. As many have said, NOAC has another meaning, which is no AC, meaning that everything is hot. In 2006, the heat was so bad that you started sweating as soon as you left the shower, which is no fun at all. This year, our contingent was blessed with upper-classmen dorms, complete with private, 2-3 person bathrooms and an individual air conditioner which greatly increased my overall enjoyment of the event. Having someplace cool to sleep is always a plus after walking around a college campus all day in quests for free stuff. The training at NOAC was the best I have seen at any event, scout-ing or otherwise. Every class that I attended was taught by a motivated and qualified instructor who took an genuine interest in what the Arrowmen in attendance took away from their time spent in the classroom. Class topics ranged from fundraising to trailbuilding to running an LLD and everything in between. If it was somehow related to scouting, there was probably a class for it. Another class/event that was held on a daily basis was Meet the Man. At section conclaves, this consists of whatever regional and national leader-ship are able to attend. At NOAC, the guest list for this particular attraction includes names such as Ross Perot, as well as all of the national youth and adult leadership of the Order and of Scouting in general. One highlight of the training I received was the Native American dance classes. As you know, the ceremonies of the Order are based on the Lenni Lenape tribe of the Delaware River Valley. Many lodges take this one step further, and have dance and drum teams which compete at pow-wows in their area or for some, around the country. There are competitions for the different types of dance at NOAC, and the winners are presented their medals in front of everyone at one of the nightly shows. The shows were another amazing part of NOAC. Holding true to the idea that scouting should be youth run with adult supervision, all of the shows, and in fact, the entire event, was planned primarily by youth, which in the Order, are scouts under the age of 21. This year, the shows included

Page 3: Yonk September 2009

quite a bit of pyrotechnics which were extremely loud inside the enclosed space of the basketball arena where the shows were held. At the shows, speeches were made by people such as the National Vice Chief and the Chief Scout Executive, to name two of the nightly speakers. Another great part of my NOAC experience was The Experi-ence, which is basically a scouting and equipment expo in a huge air conditioned tent. Among gear com-panies such as Deuter and Sawyer was a table for the new scout book to be released in 2010 at the Na-tional Jamboree and a table regarding High Adventure offerings available through the Order. In the end, NOAC is some-thing that everyone should attend at least once. There is absolutely no comparison between this great event and any other national Scouting event, thus, there is no reason to go to any other event. I have attended two NOAC’s, and I would already be signed up for the next one if I were able to. Can you say no to staying in college dorms instead of tents and eating food you don’t have to cook coupled with some of the best train-ing and events Scouting has to offer? With all of the knowledge and fun to be had at NOAC, do you really think that National Jamboree could pos-sibly surpass the Order in dishing out fun, fellowship, and learning? I think not.

Hi everyone I just wanted to give you all a summer camp update. Thanksto the support of Nick Gionatti, Mike Biancucci, Nathan Frumkin, BenRoth, and Nate Brady we were able to do some great brotherhoodconversions at camp. Every Wednes-day at Camp Resolute we had Order ofthe Arrow Night. This was to recog-nize and reward all of those whogave of themselves cheerful service in scouting. We were able to do atotal of 5 Brotherhood ceremonies and for a total of 10 conversions. Iwould like to congradulate all that were able to earn Brotherhood aswell as thank those who helped with the ceremonies.

My Brother’s, I hope you all had a very enjoyable summer. Mine was filled with camp, ice cream socials and vacation. I hope that as many of you attended summer camp as possible. Camp is a great oppor-tunity for all of you to earn merit badges, meet new people, and learn some new skills and most impor-tantly have fun. I have been on camp staff for three years now and I am looking to make it four years. While on camp staff it gives me a great op-portunity to provide the best experi-ence possible to all the campers who attend and it also gives me an oppor-tunity to interact with Arrowman on a personal level. I am always avail-able for comments or suggestions that you might have. This is your Lodge and the LEC is here to give you the best experience possible and offer you opportunities for growth, leadership and brotherhood. I en-courage all of you to attend the fall Ordeal to provide service back to the camp that gave so much to the over 1,000 campers that attended this past season. If you have any questions please email me any time at [email protected] of give me a call. There is always a place for an Ar-rowman who wants to become more active and get the most out of their time with the Lodge. Yours in Wimachtendienk,

No honor in “Sash and dash”By Max Resnick

Every year, our lodge gets a big crowd of candidates for the Or-deals. When the ordeal ends, they dis-appear. In the Order of the Arrow, we have a name for those people, “Flap wearers.” They are the ones who “sash and dash.” They go to the ordeal, get their lodge flap and sash, then they wear their flap and forget about the lodge. The Order of the Arrow is not a one time deal Being part of the

lodge is like being part of a second troop or crew. There are monthly Lodge Executive Meetings (LEC) which is like PLC meetings, and at least 4 lodge events each year with at least one section event (like a mini jamboree). Those people who stay ac-tive in the lodge, not just pay the dues, but actually go to lodge events have a chance to gain leadership experience and skills that aren’t offered in a troop setting. Running for a position in the Lodge is like running for a troop posi-tion but as a Lodge Officer you have more room to make your own deci-sions than a troop officer. The Order of the Arrow is truly “Boy leads boy under the guidance (and only guid-ance) of adults.” Don’t just return to your troop after the Ordeal and forget about the Lodge. Ask a LEC member about registering for the next event.~Max ResnickLilchpin Wischixin (Diligent active one)Vice Chief of Viking District

Never Look BackBy Daniel Rowe

Today as I sit here one this the 8th anniversary of the day the world changed, I think of so many things, I remember where I was, when I first found out, I remember coming home from school and seeing the TV, and seeing the plane crash into the tower.I remember the tears, streaming down my mother’s face, and all of the faces on the Television. At the time I didn’t fully grasp what had happened, what I was watching on TV. It seems amazing to me that as I sit here typing this, at the beginning of my Freshman Year of College,

Page 5: Yonk September 2009

that 8 years ago I was in 5th Grade, I wasn’t even in the Boy Scouts yet. I can think of all of the things that have hap-pened in those fast 8 years, all of the Camping Trips I have been on, all of the Order of the Arrow events, all the fun times with my friends, yet, it feels like September 11th occurred yesterday, like I was sitting watching that TV, not fully grasping the severity of what just happened. As I grew older, I learned of the severity, and how horrible that day was. However, it was not until 2007, when I attended the Section NE-1A conclave, that I really grasped the situation. At the opening campfire they played a movie, about a former member of their lodge, who was on one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center. This really struck it home; you can look on TV, and realize that there are real people. But to be there. With people that had been directly affected, and to realize all we had lost in one man, really showed the true loss, he was an Eagle Scout, a very successful young man, and it was all taken away on that day, now to realize, that with one person the world lost so much, and then to look at the numbers, 2,819 people, of which, 343 were firefighters and para-medics, 23 were NYPD officers, and 37 were Port Authority police officers. To realize what sacrifice those brave firefight-ers, paramedics, and port authority officers made is beyond anything I could imagine. To go into a collapsing building, risking your own life, to try to save other people, I am not sure if most of us would be able to do that. So next time you see a service member, whether it be a firefighter, a police officer, a paramedic, or a Soldier, thank them, regardless of whether you agree with the cause on a political basis, thank them for what they personally are risking to keep you safe, and think about all of those 2,819 people who lost their lives that day, and never take a day for granted, those people didn’t know what was going ot happen that day, none of us did, and you don’t know if tomorrow will come, so treat everyone the way you want to be remembered if you were to die tomorrow, and be ad-
