Blessings in a BoxAs I mentioned in last months newsletter, there are millions ofchildren around the world that have never received a Christmas gift.Most of us take for granted th e gifts we receive at Christmas timebecause we have always received something for Christmas. Butthis is th e reality for many children here in th e DR.However, because of th e overflowing love from the members ofNew Hope Christian Church {Roanoke. VA three hundredprecious Dominican children in Punta Cana will at least receive on egift this year New Hope Christian Church ha s partnered with ourPunta Cana church plant to provide a shoebox size present foreach of the children in the congregation as well as each child in anearby local school. The boxes all arrived with no problems and theevent was a huge success. Just look at the faces of these childrenas they receive their Blessings in a Box . Thank you New Hope

Jovanny Baez along with his beautiful wife Leticia and wonderfulchildren Nashlie, Salmon and Sianny arrived from Costa Rica onJanuary ^ to begin their new ministry as the leadpreacherfor ourLa Romana church plant. Jovanny is Dominican, but has lived inCosta Rica for most of the last 20 years. They are excited to behere and get starting leading this wonderful congregation. Afterseveral meetings with the elders of th e church, ou r La Romanachurch as a seven year growth plan called 20/20 Vision. This willbe their clear vision for the next seven years which will take themthrough the year 2020.

We feel blessed to have Jovanny and Leticia with us here in theeast and look forward to seeing how God is going to use them andwhere He is going to take this congregation. Please pray for theBaez family as they settle into their new home and becomeaccustomed to a new culture and way of living.

However, millions of non-churchgoerswill be attending a worship service this weekend for th e first time allyear. They will be looking for answers. Looking for somethingdifferent. Looking for something out of the ordinary.

Let us spread palm branches and make way for th e King of kingsand Lord of l or ds . A huge thanks to the wonderful medical team that once againpartnered with us and the Cen tr e Medico Mutualista (clinic attachedto our La Romana church plant). Nancy Gray and her team of

highly motivated, hard working doctorsa nd n u rs es he ld t he i r annualOperative Medico (affordablemedical outreach) this month.Surgeons Greg Delaurier and LeslieSchuschke began early each morningand operated until late afternoon eachday. They help as many Dominicanand Haitians as possible offering veryaffordable (almost free) surgeries for hernias, gall bladders and

cysts while at the same time sharing the love of Jesus with eachpatient.This team of doctors, nurses and willing servants ran like a well-oiled machine as patients arrived, were prepped for surgery, prayedover, operated on and recovered in th e post-op room. Each step onth e process was handledprofessionally by the members of theteam, primarily made up of membersof the Northeast Christ ian Church,Louisville, KY. Dozens of patientswere operated on included two of ou rLa Romana church members, FranCordero and Nahum Bal tazar . Eachpatient is doing well and we praiseGod for another successful Operativo Medico.

We also want to acknowledge Dr. Denise Putnuff (dermatologist)for he r medical outreach. She traveled around the eastern part ofthe Dominican Republic holding consults in each of our four churchplants as well as in several of our church member's homes. Denisehelped solve many of th e skin issues that people have been dealingwith for years. Thank you, Denise, for your ministry.Also, a special thanks to Neil Webster,EDCM board member, for working so hard toget our La Romana sound system installedas well as helping get the preacher's officeset up. lead the congregation. At the time, Victorand Heidy were living in Costa Rica asmissionaries serving several different localcongregations. While being a Dominicannative, Victor followed his passion and leftthe Dominican Republic in 1991 to pursuehigher education and experience inministry. This passion for God's Word andfor reaching the lost landed Victor inPanama where he received his highereducation in ministry from a BibleInstitute and began his full-timeministry. Victor later found himselfserving the Lord in Costa Rica as well asfalling in love with a wonderfully spiritedTica (Costa Rican) named Heidy. Now,after more than 20 years of education and experience, God has broughtVictor and Heidy back to the Dominican Republic to pastor the HigueyChristian Church and lead them through their first two years as acongregation.

On May ^^ 2 3 the Higuey Christian Church celebrated its two yearanniversary with a five day rally which included the participation of eachof the EDCM church plants as well asseve ral o ther local churches. Several localartists shared their music and evangelisticmessage each night as the theme wasUnderneath the shadowofHIS wings.Victor's passion for the Lord is evident toall and Heidy's sweet spirit and deliciousfood is quickly becoming famous. We herea t EDCM a re h on or ed to h av e th eHernandez family as a part of our team and are very pleased with whereGod is leading this new church plant.

A speical thanks to Broadway Christian Church, Christ's Church ofMandarin and all others who have partnered with EDCM to help makethis new church launch a success.

A M o tow n Rev iva lA wonderful group from First Christian Church, Morristown, TNpartnered with us here in June as they focused their efforts working withour La Romana church plant. Lead minister Greg Grant led a veryorganized and loving teamwhich held thr ee VBSactivities fo r ch i ld ren o f th eLa Romana Christ ianChurch as well a s t he V il laHermosa ChristianC hu rc h. W it h each VBSaveraging about 130children, the Mo'town teamhandled th e childrensuperbly as we sang,danced, listened to puppets,made a craft , had a biblelesson and played cool games in the front yard. The children thoroughlyenjoyed themselves as the American team showed them the unconditionallove of Jesus. The Mo'town gang also took on a large construction projecthelping build a new entrance to the La Romana church building. Thisincluded lots ofmixing of concrete (by hand), shoveling, pouring, carryingbuckets of water and getting really dirty. They also came alongside the LaRomana congregation to help finish painting the front of the churchbuilding to help conclude the face lilt.

Hello everybody, I have some greatnews to share with you. 1graduatedThat's right, 1have officiallygraduated from the first grade Wehave a program here in the DRcal led Y a S e leer which means Ica n read. And the en d of firstgrade, we all are able to read inEnglish and in Spanish, so we had abig celebration and party. Myparents were there and so was myhermanito, Josiah. 1got to wear thiscool red robe and a cool hat and goup on stage. They called my nameout and I walked down the aisle,went up on stage and took my seat.Then we first graders sang severalsongs in English and Spanish andperformed for our parents. I had asolo in the song Mother Earthwhere I held the microphone and hadto sing by myself. 1was a littlenervous, but my mommy and daddyhad practiced with me a lot, so 1wasready.After the ceremony, we hadcupcakes and took a lot ofpictures. Anyway, now 1know howto read and it is a lo t o f fun.Have a great summer....and don'tforget to read every night before yougo to bedy^

The EDCM Mission Team is very proud to recognize thefaithful service of Rick and Suzanne York. After 41 faithful years infull-time ministry Rick and Suzanne are retiring from the missionfield. When we think about what God has accomplished throughRick and Suzanne's ministry throughout the years, words likepowerful , compassionate , faithful , dedicated and lovingcome to mind. Rick and Suzanne always preached the Word boldly and werealways prepared to correct, rebuke and encourage. The impact oftheir ministry ha s been felt by tens of thousands throughout theislands of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republica n d will b e r em e m be re dfor years to come.Rick a n d S u z a n n e s t a r t e dtheir journeys as studentsat Johnson Bible College(now Johnson University)and Miliigan College, butboth w e r e called to themission field shortly aftergraduation. As a youngsingle missionary in PuertoRico, Suzanne Swango(York) had followed he r calling to be a full-time missionary as shetaught in th e Puerto Rico Christian School. Little did she know thatGod was about to bring her the man of her dreams and togetherthey would faithfully serve as missionaries for th e next 40years. Altogether, Rick and Suzanne faithfully sei'ved for 18years in PuertoRico. 20 years in the Dominican Republic and three years at JohnsonUniversity for a grand total of 41 faithful years in full-time ministry.

Therefore, after their faithful and fruitful 41 years ofministiy, they havedecided to retire from full-time missionary work. Rick and Suzanne Yorkwill be greatly missed in Latin America but their legacy lives on. We hereat F,DCM are veiy grateful for their ministry and for the love they haveshown to all of us. Just the other day I had a big testto see if I was ready to get myyellow belt. I had to learn manydifferent types of kicks, punchesand combi na ti on s as wel l as th eKicho Hanna. This is a 20 stepmove that combines everything 1know together in one fluid dancelike performance. I had to do it infront of 3 teachers, all myclassmates and all of their parents.I was nervous, bu t my Mom andDad said i did it perfectly and tha tthey were really proud of me.Then, the teacher he ld a piece ofwood and 1 had to kick it a nd b re akit . It w as a we some I d idn ' t know Ic ou ld do that. When I kicked it , itsnapped right in half 1 broke thewood with my kick...awesomeAnyway, I am loving myTaekwondo class . Can ' t wait to bein the Olympics some day:).

Short-term BlessingsOver the past several months we have hosted several short-term teamswhich have been huge blessings. As these teams surrendered their time,money, energy and comfort to come to the DR for a week and serve God,we were constantly reminded of the passage in Ephesians 3:20-21:Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or

imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be gloryin the church and in Jesus Christ throughout all generations, fo r ever andever Amen.
