Plan Number 1-2-624TWO BEDROOM

STRAIGHT ENTRY HOME

This attractive two-bedroom home is designed for a lot that slopes to the back. The unusual lay-out means the garage, along with the extra-large laundry room/mud room, extends at an angle from the main part of the home, creat-ing a V-shaped stairway to the unfinished base-ment included with the plans.

The spacious covered porch at the entryway is large enough to accom-modate potted plants and some outdoor furniture, perfect for summertime evenings. The foyer, with stairs to the basement on the right and a coat closet to the left, leads directly through an arch-way into the great room.

A built-in fireplace will make the open-plan great room/dining room/kitchen especially wel-coming during cooler months, while slid-ing doors to a covered deck, with its adjacent sundeck, will ensure the

space is equally appeal-ing during the summer.

The roomy kitchen boasts a central prep island, and the G-shaped counter configuration promises to save steps for the cook. A walk-through pantry leads into the laundry room/mud room and from there into the double garage, which features a bay window on one side.

The master suite over-looks the back garden for privacy, and includes a spacious en-suite with a soaker tub with a win-dow, as well as a sepa-rate shower stall. Access to the walk-in closet is through the en-suite.

The second bedroom boasts a window with an extra-deep sill. There is a four-piece bathroom next door.

The home’s exterior includes partly-mul-lioned windows, shingled gables, decorative wood and stone accents, and painted trim. The garage has handsome barn-style doors, topped by a nar-row strip of windows.

This home measures 75 feet, 11 inches wide

and 64 feet deep, for a total of 1,773 square feet.

Plans for design 1-2-624 are available for $695 (set of 5), $790(set of 8) and $866 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges.

Our 45TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Make all cheque and money orders payable to “Jenish House Design Ltd.” and mail to:

Use common sense on sleddingIt doesn’t sound like

any Saskatchewan muni-cipalities will climb aboard the tobogganing bandwagon and outlaw the practice. Thank good-ness for that. First of all, we don’t have any hills so where are they going to put up the signs? All kidding aside, where are the judges here? They are the ones that can put a stop to this nonsense. Use the above average brain God gave you and use the gift that got you in such a prestigious spot in the first place to ration out some common sense and stop this foolishness. If you want to go sledding near a telephone pole, that’s nobody’s fault but your own. Go sue the mir-ror. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Is it just me, or are anthem singers at sport-ing events making the song more about them and trying to draw atten-tion to the rendition

they sing as opposed to what the anthem really is meant to be? Nobody just sings O Canada or Star Spangled Banner as it was intended anymore. Performers add their own twist and in many, many cases it is a fail. Just sing the song. The Vancouver guy (not sure if he still does), laces up the skates and goes for a rip around the ice while he belts it out. Silly.

Discovery Ford in Humboldt has partnered with the Saskatchewan Safety Council to offer Skid Smart: Collision Avoidance. This is a one-day instruction in the classroom and behind the wheel of your own vehicle designed to better prepare you for instances you may encounter while driving in winter condi-tions. Participants go through practical exer-cises that teach braking techniques, how vehicle speed affects stopping

distances, and proper steering techniques. I think it’s a great idea for young drivers and, I believe, there are some funding options avail-able if you know of a young person that you’d like to take the course. You just have to call the dealership in Humboldt and they will direct you appropriately. I’m going to take it next week (it runs January 14-22) because I do a lot of win-ter driving and while I would like to think I’m an expert based on experience, there is no doubt I will learn that is

nowhere near the case. I took a Saskatchewan Safety Council course in May for learning how to ride a motorcycle and I can tell you the week-end was invaluable. If it’s offered through SSC, it will be well done. I will guarantee it.

In Saudi Arabia, lob-byists want Canada to intervene on a punish-ment for a man who was sentenced to be flogged 50 times as part of a 1000 lash sentence for denouncing Islam. He’s also doing a ten year jail term for criticizing senior religious figures. Now, I’m not about to suggest this person deserves the punishment, but I will

say Canada should not step in. While the man has close relatives in Sherbrooke, Quebec; he, himself, is not a Canadian citizen. Apparently, the person ran a web-site and blogged about Islamic leaders. I say, you should know better than to do that in a country like Saudi Arabia. Who are we to determine the world’s justice system? We have got plenty to fix here before we go tell-ing Saudi Arabia what to do. I agree the pun-ishment does not fit the crime, but such is life in Saudi Arabia and it’s why you will never ever find me there (note to anyone who tries to look for me in the event, I go mis-sing). When we put those who commit honour kill-ings in prison, would we appreciate another coun-try stepping in because it may not even be a crime in that particular coun-try? Of course not. We will deal with our citizens and other countries will deal with theirs, regard-

less of how stupid the lawmay be. Don’t confusethis with crimes wherepeople are punished because they don’t haveblonde hair and blue eyes. That’s totally differ-ent. When you live some-where and are aware of what the rules are andthen, break them; you accept the risk of being punished accordingly.

Political commenta-tor Mark Steyn is a must-watch and a must-read if you are a strong oppon-ent of radical Muslims. He made some fairly big headlines last week after the attack on the Frenchcartoonists.

His point is that major world wide media outlets only feed terrorism more by refusing to publish the cartoons. He’s correct. It’s a lot easier to bomb the two or three that are willing to take a standthan it is to attack every-one. Attacks have sincespread to Germany and they will continue to getcloser to home .

Newsmakers 2015?View from the Cheap

Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate. This week:

Not a personOkay, in retrospect, we

may have made this topic a tad restrictive with local newsmaker of the year. Try as I might, there are only a small hand-ful of possible local top newsmakers.

We will, for the first time in 20 years, have a different member of parliament in 2015, so it might be kind of obvious to say whoever replaces Garry Breitkreuz could be it. I have a couple of problems with this, how-ever. Even though the incumbent is not running again, it is safe to say can-didates from other par-ties are going to have a real uphill battle. If the Conservative wins, I don’t think it’s a big story and I don’t want to predict that there will be an upset for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that at this point my plan is still to seek the Liberal nomination myself.

I also can’t foresee anything particularly noteworthy on the prov-incial political scene, at

least not locally.That pretty much

leaves local government, but the mayor and coun-cil are not going to be doing anything big in the near future, not without the support of the feds and province, which is not going to happen par-ticularly with oil prices diving.

And finally, since it is impossible to accurately predict a big fire, natural disaster or particularly heinous crime, I am going to go safe on this and say the big newsmaker of 2015 is going to be Parkland College’s new Trades and Technology Centre. This has been a huge story for Yorkton throughout the project life cycle and its opening will be momentous.

-Thom Barker

Political arenaIn a small city picking

who are going to be the newsmakers of the com-ing year leaves one work-ing from a rather small list.

And when looking to 2015 in particular, there is not a lot of big news exactly pending, so pre-dicting where to look even in a small pond is a bit challenging.

A key story which could unfold in the Chambers of Yorkton Council, and certainly should happen, is a ser-ious look at fire protec-tion services in Yorkton.

Following an arbitra-tion tribunal awarding firefighters an 18.1 per cent over three years, a contract which actually comes to an end this year.

At a meeting in December Council requested City Administration to bring a report back to then looking at the service, at costs, and at alternatives.

It is an issue which tends to bring out an emotional response from people, and Council is likely to get lots of feed-back on what they should do if they chose to go down a path of signifi-cant change.

The other story which will play out with some significance is who will replace Garry Breitkreuz as our MP?

Breitkreuz has been

our federal presentative since 1993, when he made some major headlines upsetting then incum-bent Lorne Nystrom whohad sat from 1968 through1993.

In Breitkreuz’s case he has announced his retire-ment opening the field in the sense the electionwill not have an incum-bent on the ballot.

Certainly whoever is victorious will make a headline based on thewin alone, and then haveeyes on them to see howthey serve our constitu-ency moving forward.

Calvin Daniels

Flowers and lightLet me channel

my inner psychic for amoment so that I can pre-dict who will be the 2015Newsmaker of the Yearfor 2015.

Will it be the Yorkton RawTec Maulers, who may or may not make a big run to the SMAAAHL title?

Or will it be our mayor Bob Maloney?

Ready for the answer?Well, here it is. The

2015 Newsmaker of theYear for 2015 will be…no one.

Wait, what?That’s right. Not a

single person will be the 2015 Newsmaker of theYear and the reason is actually quite simple.

I predict that, through-out 2015, so many Yorktonpeople will do so many wonderful things that, inreality, there is no way that I, or anyone else for that matter, could evendecide who will be theNewsmaker of the Year.

Instead, 2015 will be the Year of Yorkton.Residents will continu-ally surprise one anotherwith their generosity.Business owners willcontinue to be as gra-cious as ever and should a tragedy occur withinthe city, you can bet yourbottom dollar that our police, firefighters and EMS, as well as a pleth-ora of volunteers, will be right there to help.

So who will be the2015 Newsmaker of theYear?

Quite simply, the resi-dents of this great city ofYorkton.

–Randy Brenzen
