Small businesses seeking to protect their mission critical data resources are often tantalized by the functionality of an enterprise-strength data backup solution and are consequently lured to vendors who specialize in such offerings. But upon closer examination they soon find out that these features come at a cost significantly beyond their budgetary allowances. This leaves the Small-to-Medium-Business (SMB) market facing a dilemma: how to balance the need to completely protect their data resources as they know they should against the sizable costs of doing so.

RecognizingRecognizing this problem, several enterprise backup solution vendors offer watered down versions of their flagship products at a price the SMB marketplace can accept, but that often lack the functionality these companies need. These less-than-optimal products leave the market between the proverbial rock and hard place: their backup requirements are no different than those of larger companies, but they are being forced to accept solutions no larger company would consider.

Fortunately,Fortunately, there is a more reasonable alternative — a backup solution designed from the ground up to meet the enterprise-strength functionality requirements of the SMB marketplace, but at a cost that reflects the more restricted budgets of these companies, Yosemite Backup Standard.

Like any enterprise-strength backup solution, at the core of Yosemite Backup Standard (Standard) is a central data catalog that manages and tracks all jobs, schedules, backup media, and protected files. Designed for the SMB marketplace, the Standard catalog is sized to be consistent with the needs of small-to-medium-sized businesses. As a result, Standard costs less than leading competitors; customers never pay for capacity they do not need. StandardStandard was designed to have a small installation footprint on the system, with a size about one-tenth that of leading competitors. This means that the product does not consume inordinate amounts of disk space or system resources, and is much faster and easier to install.

InIn fact, from the time the box is opened, Standard can be up, running and well into its first backup in ten minutes or less regardless of server type or operating system. Installation of competing solutions, by comparison, can take hours and require extensive technical training before that process even begins. Standard does not require technical training because of built-in educational wizards and product assistants that guide users, step-by-step through installation and the entire backup and restore process.

“Customers are looking for partner companies that can bridge the gap between their business demands and technology capabilities.”

Introduction

Yosemite Backup Standard SMB Value Proposition

ByBy comparison, competing solutions, and even products designed for larger enterprises, frequently require multiple installations of different versions for various operating systems. With this approach, if your company runs Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux, and UNIX servers, you will need to purchase, install and manage three different products. A single instance of Standard is not only capable of supporting Windows, Red Hat Linux and UNIX operating systems, but Novell NetWare and SuSE Linux as well, offfering the same comprehensive feature set and functionality across all platforms.

Standard also supports both server and PC desktop operating systems through a common user interface, unlike many competing products which require separate versions and management interfaces for servers and PC desktops.

Like its higher-priced competitors, Standard is also scalable to protect your investments. If additional backup capacity is required, or performance needs boosting, additional devices can be added or clients and media servers installed from the original CD and unlocked through a software activation key.

Yosemite Backup Standard is not a watered-down, band-aid product. Its feature set is rich and its performance on par with any enterprise-strength solution designed for large environments. Standard offers Self Tuning Logic (STL)TM technology which supports concurrent data streams from each server in order to feed tape devices at full speed, reduce backup time and minimize the number of tape drive starts and stops which wear out both tapes and drives.

Standard also delivers the value required by the SMB marketplace because the solution supports multiple operating systems with a single user interface

In fact, Standard's ability to drive concurrent data streams is unmatched in the SMB marketplace.

Standard provides the automation features and lights-out operation typically seen in enterprise-strength backup products. These features allow customers to schedule and execute hands-free backups because the solution tracks all files requiring protection and seamlessly interfaces with tape libraries that control robotics units to load the appropriate tapes at the right time. When backups are complete, Standard creates logs and generates pre-formatted (but easily customized) reports that make it easy to manage by exception. To facilitate management tasks, Standard even offers a full suite of alert features, including delivering email notifications, when jobs complete or errors are encountered. email notifications, when jobs complete or errors are encountered.

Dealing with alerts and other management issues is also simplified in Standard with a web gateway that enables remote administration from any web-enabled PC. Administrative tasks are further streamlined with built-in platform-independent role based security features that simplify fast assignment of different rights and permissions to different groups of users.

Like other enterprise-strength solutions, Standard also offers a Microsoft® SQL Server option that enables incremental and full backups of the database while it is running–all through the Standard's common user interface. In the event of a server failure, this option also lets customers redirect a database restore to another server, or to restore the database under a different name. As a result, completely protecting SQL databases is fast, easy, and efficient and can be an integral element of a comprehensive lights-out enterprise-wide backup plan. Similar agents are also available for Oracle and Microsoft® Exchange Server.

AA key Yosemite differentiator is the Bare Metal Disaster Recovery option to simplify a restore in the event of a total data and server loss. If such a disaster should occur, the usual procedure is to reformat hard drives, reload the server operating system, reload the backup software and license keys, re-catalog tapes, and then restore the data — a process that could take up to 12 hours per server. But with Standard's bare metal recovery, (provided through the Bare Metal Disaster Recovery option), full restores can be completed in a fraction of this time.

Bare Metal Disaster Recovery supports HP One-Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR) technology that renders backup tapes bootable. For companies that do not rely on OBDR, Standard can create a bootable CD image that includes both a rudimentary operating system and a basic version of Standard. This capability, coupled with system recovery and configuration information captured on each backup tape, minimizes the need for manually reloading and reconfiguring the operating system and backup software before recovery can begin.

Platform-independentPlatform-independent diagnostics are also available with Standard to simplify resolution of technical support issues for small-to-medium companies, eliminating reliance on the varied but limited diagnostic features available in the operating system itself.

The ability to define D2D2Ne virtual libraries across heterogeneous storage allows you to utilize existing storage capacity

Disk is rapidly becoming the backup medium of choice due to performance and reliability. However, implementing a backup to disk solution from competitors is often easier said than done. Just ensuring enough disk space is available for backups can be a challenge. Add in the need for redundancy and offsite storage to tape as a secondary or tertiary media, and the process becomes even more complex.

YosemiteYosemite solves both the issue of disk space management and data movement to tape by embedding a Virtual Tape Library into Standard and offering the D2D2Ne (Disk-to-Disk-to-Any) Option. You no longer have to worry that backups will fail due to lack of disk space since a combination of heterogeneous spill pools and media self-grooming ensure that space will be available to accommodate backup cycles.

Backup-2-Disk Backup Made Simple

The scalable, three-tier architecture offers all the performance advantages of local backup combined with the centralization of a centralization of a two-tier solution

The key to Standard's cost-effectiveness, robust feature set, and advanced functionality is its distributed, three-tier architecture. Many other backup products by comparison rely on a single-tier architecture that only offers standalone backup functionality which requires a separate storage solution for each server.

AtAt best, other SMB backup products and backup products for larger enterprises are based on a two-tier architecture that centralize backup on a single backup server that can protect multiple servers and clients. But since this approach relies on data being sent over the network, the network can become a bottleneck, significantly reducing backup performance. Standard, with its three-tier architecture, resolves this shortcoming by supporting distributed backups, where multiple storage devices throughout the network are all managed by a centralized catalog. As a result, the solution offers the high performance of local backup products as well as the benefits associated with pooling redundant storage devices.backup products as well as the benefits associated with pooling redundant storage devices.

Robust Three-Tier Architecture

Because of its ability to pool devices, Standard can span backup jobs across multiple storage devices and increase backup speed. Equally important, should any single storage device on the network fail, this architecture enables automated and instantaneous fail-over to another device in the pool.

WithWith its three-tier enterprise-strength architecture, Standard offers the full functionality of backup solutions designed for the enterprise environments. But because it is built on a common code base that delivers core functionalities across a wide range of supported operating systems, it is also far more flexible than its competitors. Making it even more appealing to the SMB marketplace is its heterogeneous support, and Yosemite's dedication to the needs of companies in this marketplace. In short, Yosemite is the most feature-rich, highly functional, robust, and cost-effective backup product available for the single server to small business environment.
