THE NEW COVENANT Today’s first reading is an enormously important pas-sage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disciples of Jesus, who see in it a fore-shadowing of the Christian dispensation. The prophet announces that God has chosen to forgive the people, and that as a sign of divine forgiveness a new covenant will be established. Contrasting the new covenant with the one made with Moses on Mount Sinai, Jeremiah says that the new covenant will be written on the people’s hearts rather than on tablets of stone. No longer will the community’s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; henceforth, God will speak directly and per-sonally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere out-ward compliance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one’s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today’s second reading, where the author of the Let-ter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obedience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him. EL NUEVO PACTO La primera lectura de hoy es un paso muy importante, en la historia del pueblo judío y también para nosotros como discípulos de Jesús que ven en ella un anuncio de la dis-pensación cristiana. El profeta anuncia que Dios ha escogi-do perdonar al pueblo, y que como un signo del perdón divino se establecerá una nueva alianza. Contrastando la nueva alianza con la que Dios hizo con Moisés en el Monte Sinaí, Jeremías dice que el nuevo pacto será inscrito en el corazón del pueblo y no en tablas de piedra. Ya no será la tradición de la comunidad la única portadora de la alianza; a partir de ahora, Dios hablará directa y personalmente a cada individuo, perdonando el pecado y pidiendo un re-torno a Él en fidelidad. Ya no bastará el mero cumplimien-to de los dictados externos de la ley; a partir de ahora, Dios pide una obediencia que brota de lo más profundo de nuestro corazón. Precisamente ese tipo de obediencia se destaca en la segunda lectura de hoy, donde el autor de la Carta a los Hebreos describe a Jesús como el mediador del nuevo pac-to, cuya obediencia ha hecho de él la fuente de salvación para todos los que, a su vez, le obedecen. FAITH FORMATION
Jesus draws people to Himself. John 12:28-33
…The magnet has great power and will draw many objects to itself. It reminds me of something that Jesus taught about Himself. The people who were following Jesus thought Jesus had come to set up an earthly kingdom. But Jesus came to earth to die for our sins so that we could join Him in His heavenly kingdom. Even so, because Jesus knew He would soon be crucified, He said to his followers, "I am very troubled...What should I do? Should I pray to the Father and ask Him to save me?”
How do you think you’d answer Him?
Jesus told the people, “No, this is the very reason that I came, and when I am lifted up, I will draw everyone to Myself." The Bible tells us that He told them that so they would know how He was going to die.
The drawing power of this magnet is very strong, but it’s nothing compared to the drawing power of Jesus. When we see His great love, we’re drawn to Him. He will-ingly died on the cross to pay the price for our sin, and when we trust in Him, we receive the right to become the children of God. Even after we become God's children, we will still sin, and that’s not pleasing to Him. But that doesn’t mean He will stop loving us. He has the power to draw us back to Him-self. There is no power stronger than the love of Jesus.

BUSCANDO A JESÚS, ENCONTRANDO LA CRUZ En la lectura del Evangelio, amigos de Felipe se acercaron a él para pedirle una cita con Jesús. Cuan-do Felipe y Andrés le presentan a Jesús esta petición, Jesús empieza un discurso enigmático acerca del dis-cipulado, la transformación y el juicio divino. Nunca escuchamos si los amigos de Felipe llegaron a conocer personalmente a Jesús. Quizá simplemente se mez-claron con la multitud. Jesús dice: “Cuando sea levantado de la tierra, atraeré a todos hacía mí”. El narrador dice que las
palabras de Jesús indican cómo él iba a mo-rir; los lectores ya saben que Jesús será cru-cificado. Jesús también habla del juicio di-vino que expulsa a los gobernantes del mun-do y la necesidad de ser transformado, como una semilla fructífera. Él advierte sobre el amor a nuestra vida y la pérdida de esta. A diferencia de la visión detallada de Jere-mías, Jesús solo insinúa qué tipo de vida transformada traerá su muerte. ¿Y si nosotros, como los amigos de Felipe, quisiéramos acercarnos a Jesús? ¿Significa
eso que el discurso sobre la muerte y el juicio está dirigido a nosotros? Si Jesús atrae a todos hacia sí mismo cuando es “levantado”, ¿significa que estar más cerca de él significa unirse a él en su cruz? (¿Queremos estar muy cerca de Jesús?) ¿Queremos ser transformados? Si decimos “sí”, la liturgia de estas dos semanas puede mostrarnos la única manera que la Iglesia conoce para acercarse a Jesús: estar dispues-tos a ser “levantados” con él en su sufrimiento y en el nuestro. JEREMIAH: LOOKING BEYOND EXILE AND SUFFERING
The readings today remind us how close we are to Easter—only two weeks from now. They also remind us that the path to resurrection and Easter always includes suffering and death. The proph-et Jeremiah spent his whole life proclaim-ing the word of God to kings who would not listen. As an old man, he saw Jerusa-lem defeated and the inhabitants taken into exile. Jere-miah himself suffered in being left behind, but in to-day’s reading, he is looking beyond those sufferings to a time when the previously disobedient people would be transformed and live in harmony with God’s law. Las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan lo cerca que estamos de la Pascua, ya dentro de dos semanas. También nos recuerdan que el ca-mino hacia la resurrección y la Pascua siem-pre incluye el sufrimiento y la muerte. El pro-feta Jeremías pasó toda su vida proclamando la palabra de Dios a reyes que no lo escucha-ban. Siendo ya un anciano, él vio a la ciudad
de Jerusalén derrotada y a sus habitantes llevados al exilio. El propio Jeremías sufrió al ser dejado atrás, pero en la lec-tura de hoy, está mirando más allá de esos sufrimientos en un tiempo en el que el pueblo anteriormente desobediente se transformaría y viviría en armonía con la ley de Dios.
