DAY 1 Saturday 5 July, 2014 Depart AustraliaToday we depart Australia on our flight to Amsterdam.

DAY 2 Sunday 6 July, 2014 AmsterdamThis morning we arrive at Amsterdam airport. After clearing customs, we travel to the renowned Paleis Het Loo, a former hunting lodge with a highly acclaimed garden restored to its 1684 magnificence. Built to rival Versailles in magnificence if not size, Het Loo features a wonderful sunken garden, clipped arbours, extensive parterres, gilded statues and elaborate water features. This afternoon’s highlight is a visit to the garden of Piet Oudolf, extraordinary plantsman, landscape designer, author and creator of a ground-breaking new style of bold, natural gardens. He started a nursery with his wife Anja to grow plants for his design work, and it has since become internationally celebrated for its new and unusual perennials. It features sculpted hedges, drifts of perennials and masterful use of ornamental grasses.

DAY 3 Monday 7 July, 2014 AmsterdamThis morning our city tour takes in the pretty canals that crisscross the city, the Royal Palace, cathedral, the interesting shops in the antique and art sector of the city and the infamous red light district. The rest of the day will be free for exploration of Amsterdam at leisure. Our local guide will give tips to group members on sightseeing in Amsterdam in your free time. Tonight we will enjoy a welcome dinner in Amsterdam to formally meet Sue McDougall and other tour members.

DAY 4 Tuesday 8 July, 2014 Celebrity ConstellationThis morning we journey to Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam’s botanic garden. It is one of the smallest, oldest and most enjoyable botanic gardens to visit. It was founded as a medicinal herb garden in 1638, and now crams over 6,000 plants into its tiny area. Around mid-day we are transferred to the docks to board the Celebrity Constellation. Be up on deck as the Constellation slips her moorings for the start of our fabulous cruise.

DAY 5 Wednesday 9 July, 2014 At seaOur first day at sea. During the day, why not explore and enjoy the fantastic facilities available on the Constellation. The group will meet at dinner on our reserved tables.

DAY 6 Thursday 10 July, 2014 Warnemunde, GermanyWe arrive in Warnemunde today. Once a fishing village but now a major port, Warnemunde has a pleasant waterfront, including a popular beach. We then continue on to Schwerin Castle. Set in a romantic location on a small island in Lake Schwerin, Schwerin Castle is one of Europe’s foremost examples of historic architecture. We will visit the dramatic 19th-century garden with a spectacular shell fountain, grotto and neoclassical terraces and the nearby baroque garden, featuring edging of seasonal planting and a striking statue of Duke Fredrich II.

DAY 7 Friday 11 July, 2014 At seaA day at sea to enjoy the facilities of the ship. In the afternoon we will enjoy a game of gardening Trivial Pursuit led by Sue. We will divide our group into teams with prizes for the winners.

DAY 8 Saturday 12 July, 2014 Tallinn, EstoniaTallinn, the capital of Estonia, is known for its medieval city centre with its cobblestone streets and gingerbread-style houses. We will have a guided visit to the historic centre and learn about the history of this fascinating town from the middle ages to its 1991 independence from the Soviet Union, and how the country is adapting to a western-style economy. During our time exploring Tallinn, we will see the Toompea (the old town), the Viru Gate and Raekoja Plats. We visit the sixth Garden Design Festival located in the picturesque Towers Square and surrounding streets. Teams of garden designers come to Tallinn from surrounding countries including Germany and Russia.

DAY 9 Sunday 13 July, 2014 St Petersburg, RussiaWe will be in for a special treat today, exploring beautiful St Petersburg. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, who was determined to establish a northern port with an unrestricted passage to the Baltic. Peter the Great was the first tsar to travel to Europe, returning with many ideas for reform and different architectural styles. During our guided tour today, we will visit the oldest part of the city: SS Peter and Paul Cathedral and fortress, the world famous Hermitage Palace, with its wonderful art collection and see the city’s most famous theatre, the Mariinsky.

DAY 10 Monday 14 July, 2014 St Petersburg, RussiaToday we will travel to Petrovorets, the summer house of Peter the Great. He wanted the gardens to surpass the gardens at Versailles. The centrepiece of this wonderful garden is the Grand Cascade and Water Avenue, a symphony of fountains and canals powered by gravity. We continue the day with a visit to the Imperial Palace at Tsarskoe Selo; the Catherine Palace. During our time at the Palace our local guide will show us many of the

wonderful rooms including the Amber Room, the Green Dining Room and the Great Hall. There will also be time to see some of the formal gardens that are also a feature of this palace. This will be a truly memorable day.

This afternoon we will have free time to explore Helsinki or just relax.

DAY 12 Wednesday 16 July, 2014 Stockholm, SwedenThis morning we call in to the very beautiful city of Stockholm, capital of Sweden. It is surrounded by clear water and unspoiled countryside stretching into the heart of the urban area. Stockholm’s 750-year history has produced many beautiful buildings and cultural treasures. We will have a tour of the city, with a local guide, and visit the old centre of Stockhom, Gamla Stan, with its Royal Palace, City Hall, the location of the Nobel Prize Award dinner each year. With its many waterways and archipelago to the east, Stockholm is often regarded as the Venice of the north. We travel to Drottningholms Slottsparken, the most impressive of Stockholm’s palaces. The extensive baroque garden was laid out in the 1690s for Queen Hedvig Eleonora. There is a series of small water gardens with lots of fountains and round pools, fed by a wall of cascades. The garden houses 9000 different species.

DAY 13 Thursday 17 July, 2014 At seaA day to enjoy the facilities of the ship. This afternoon you are invited to join Sue McDougall for an informal chat and find out what drives her passion for gardening.

Our private coach will take us on a guided tour of the city, home of the world’s oldest monarchy – now with an Australian connection. We will see the Amalienborg Palace, home of the royal family since 1794. We will also see the Radhus, (city hall), Kongens Nytorv, a square surrounded by gracious old buildings, including the Royal Theatre and Charlottenborg, a 17th-century Dutch baroque palace. Best known for her books Out of Africa and Babette’s Feast, both have been made into films. The house is surrounded by a beautiful garden which has been extended with funds from the Karen Blixen foundation. There are hornbeam hedges on both boundaries facing the house and terrace. New perennial beds have been planted in the west garden and a cut flower and herb garden have been planted in the old fruit garden. We will see the white rose named Karen Blixen surrounded by lavender.

We see the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, drive along the Champs-Élysées, see the Seine, Notre Dame and the other major sights of Paris. After lunch, we will visit to Claude Monet’s famous house and beautiful garden at Giverny. This garden, with its ponds, water lilies and its Japanese bridge, appears in many of the artist’s paintings. Another section of the garden has a more formal layout, featuring espaliered apples and pears and abundant plantings of roses, irises, spring bulbs, poppies and more. It has been magnificently restored and gives a vivid impression of Monet’s inspiration. Sue will make sure that we get the most out of this garden.
