FORE You by Jeff Rafferty
Things here in the golf shop have
obviously slowed down with the close of
the golf season but we had a great fall
and many of you took advantage of the
pleasant weather and course conditions. We
appreciate you all and thank you for coming
out to the club!
Just because the golf course is closed for
the season does not mean we can’t continue
to work on our golf swing. This winter I will
begin a winter golf program indoors at the
Homestead. This will be a great opportunity
for those who want or need to make a swing
change. I can develop a specific program for
individual needs. We can do a complete
game overhaul or just a minor tune up for
that winter golf get-a-way. If you just want
to hit a few balls, that is an also an option.
In conjunction with the winter program we
will have access to Callaway Golf’s Trackman
swing analyzer which is very useful for
teaching, club fitting and ball fitting. In
December I will be sending more information
about the winter program via email with
rates, net time etc. to all of the membership.
If you have any questions please call me in
the pro shop, 672-5323.
I would like to acknowledge our 2010
Club Champions.

is new for golf in 2011.
Thanks for your support and feedback.

are going to experiment with snow fence
to try to limit drifting. Houses continue to
pop up at the far ends of the property, and
it is our goal to maintain an open route
for emergency vehicles to make it to your
property. To me, snow means water, so we
are ready to battle the snow knowing next
year’s water supply will be in place.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season and
thank you for being part of The Powder

by Mark JensikOnce again December finds us looking
back over the past season to find out
what went right, and what went wrong.
The weather this spring definitely slowed
down our start, but by the time we reached
summer and through our extended fall, the
property from the golf course, through the
common areas, to home landscapes looked
very good. I attribute this success to the
determination and pride the maintenance
crew shows on a daily basis. I also feel this
success comes from our core of full-time
staff that has spent many years together.
While we always strive to do our best,
we may not always meet your expectations.
Once again, it is a big place and if we are
missing something, or you think there
is something we can do better, please
contact me at the Operations Center at
674-6700 ext. 4.
The Waste Water Treatment Plant is
still in the engineering phase. We believe
we are still on a timeline that will gain
Wyoming Department of Environmental
Quality approval long before spring arrives.
Before we reach spring, we will also
have to think of snow. We were prepared
for snow last year, but we really did not
have much to speak of. We have added
a few more areas this year where we

It seems as if winter has finally arrived
after an unusually warm and dry fall. I
hope all of you had the opportunity to get
outside and enjoy the nice weather on the
golf course. Playing golf in November is
never a bad thing.
The golf course underwent some
major maintenance this season, and I just
wanted to highlight a few of the projects
that were completed. We were able to
continue our battle against thatch in our
fairways. All fairways were verticut in
Late August and then the Eagle and Stag
were aerified in October and November
after they were closed. We hope to aerify
the Mountain fairways next spring when
they thaw. While these processes have a
negative short term effect on playability,
they will provide numerous long term
benefits including firmer more uniform
turf and improved drought tolerance as a
result of a healthier root system. In addition
to the work on our fairways, we were able
to expand our irrigation on several holes to
ensure better coverage in some of our rough.
We also spent much more time and energy
on our bunkers. It was our goal to clean up
their appearance, and make them play as
well as possible. The major theme for the
season was consistency and playability.
This winter we will be leveling several
tees and filling in at least two more bunkers
that are rarely in play. Our goal is to make
2011 the best golfing season yet at The
Powder Horn, and we will work tirelessly to
ensure that this is the case.
From everyone on the golf course staff
we wish everyone a happy and safe holiday
season. If you have any questions about the
conditioning of the golf course, or would
like to make a suggestion, please give me
a call at (307) 674-6700 ext. 120 or email
me at [email protected]. We look
forward to seeing you out on the course in
the spring.
