Costco Wholesale takes top honors at United Way’s Spirit of Caring Celebration Every year, United Way of King County recognizes outstanding workplace campaigns with the Spirit of Caring Awards.

Costco Wholesale received the 2009-2010 Spirit of puget Sound award, King County’s highest achievement in corporate philanthropy. It honors outstanding community involvement, sustained campaign excellence and the promotion of volunteerism.

For the 2009-2010 campaign season, the employees of Costco Wholesale showed incredible heart and boundless generosity. Chairman Jeff Brotman’s and CEO Jim Sinegal’s strong leadership and commitment to United Way of King County resonated throughout the company, and made this campaign year an exceptional success. Leadership Giving (gifts of $1,000 and above) jumped 7 percent company-wide, and overall participation was 84 percent—a 33 percent increase.

Adding to Costco’s campaign success was its innovative new Express Pledge System. This point-of-sale pledge system for employees enabled gifts to go directly to United Way of King County in $5 increments, which generated nearly $60,000.

In all, Costco’s northwest region raised $3.7 million for United Way of King County during a superb campaign. Costco employees also gave generously of their time, volunteering on Day of Caring.

a corporate gift, but how does it affect

a campaign? Employees appreciate

when their company displays leadership

by giving philanthropically. To leverage

the corporate gift during its campaign,

u.S. Bank ties the amount of its

corporate gift to the amount given by its

employees. Campaign Coordinator Cat

martin raised awareness by creating

Care Force, a group of team leaders

trained to run departmental campaigns.

Martin ensured that each executive

was personally asked to head up their

divisional campaign. With all the top-

level support—including bank President,

ken kirkpatrick—and a great deal

of employee outreach, U.S. Bank

employees maximized their giving. The

campaign increased by nearly 20 percent

and, in turn, the corporate gift jumped

significantly as well.

This year, upS reached an incredible

milestone in generosity. Since 1982, UPS

and its employees have donated $1 billion to

United Ways across the country.

UPS has been the top corporate giver to

United Ways for nine of the last 10 years.

UPS employees and their families also

contributed more than 1.2 million hours

of volunteer service last year through the

company’s Global Volunteer Month and

neighbor-to-neighbor program.

Locally, UPS employees have volunteered

with our Free Tax Prep Campaign, helping

working families build savings. We’ve also

had UPS employees join our Volunteer

reader Program. And for the last few years,

UPS leadership has actively participated

in our annual Lobby Day efforts in Olympia

where they supported early childhood

education and 2-1-1.

UPS drivers helped United Way of King

County transport supplies to the Community

Resource Exchange which served people

experiencing homelessness in our

community. UPS also sponsored Day of

Caring, which is the largest single-day of

volunteering in Washington state.

In 1907, 19-year-old Jim Casey borrowed

$100 from a friend to start a small company

in Seattle that would later become UPS.

From the very beginning, UPS has been about

people helping people to do great things in

the community. We are proud to join United

Ways across the country in thanking UPS and

miCRoSoFt auCtion RaiSES $450,000microsoft it built an online auction tool to help raise funds for United Way among employees. Over time, the capabilities of the tool have increased dramatically, in part because the tool has migrated to Windows Azure, the company’s new cloud services platform. Using Azure has enabled dramatic enhancements of the user experience, including 3-D graphics and motion effects with Microsoft Silverlight.

In 2010, the auction raised more than $450,000 for United Way. The success of the auction tool has attracted broad interest from other companies and nGOs, and Microsoft is working to share its innovation with others to assist in their fundraising efforts.

PrESIDEnT’S CIrCLE Since 1952, United Way of King County has had one chair for its board of directors, and one or more chairs for its annual community campaign.
