medical care, equipment, health education and research

at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children,

Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Clinic & Hospital

and Wilcox Health.

Supporting the Campaign For Hawai‘i’s Children Thanks to the overwhelming support of generous donors from the community, the Campaign for

Hawai‘i’s Children exceeded its $30 million goal, raising $35,082,930 in support of the Phase I

renovation and expansion of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Co-chaired by Dee Jay Mailer and Bert Kobayashi, the Campaign for Hawai‘i’s Children supported

the first phase of a multi-year master plan to entirely rebuild the hospital. Construction on

Kapi‘olani’s new Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit building is underway and will be done

by March 2016.

Completion of the campaign ensures that the most critically ill children and babies born pre-term

or with low birth weight receive care in a family-centered environment. The new building will

also feature a new rehabilitation services department and an education center to support training

programs for Hawai‘i’s future doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in pediatrics and

women’s care.

In May 2014, a celebratory event honored the campaign milestone, which included a surprise donation that increased the total

raised from $34M to $35M.

Honoring a legacy helps othersGerald Yoshito Sakaguchi was born in a Japanese-American

internment camp during World War II. His family’s experiences

in the camp would influence Sakaguchi throughout his career

as an attorney, where he gave his time and expertise to help

those who faced injustice.

Sakaguchi instilled these values in his children, and when he

passed away in 2012, his son Dr. Bradley Sakaguchi, an OB-GYN

at Straub Clinic & Hospital, decided to honor his father’s memory

by establishing the Gerald Yoshito Sakaguchi Fund. The fund

serves as a legacy to Sakaguchi and his children, who have all

contributed to the fund, which supports high-quality medical

care for patients who are not able to afford

it—a simple, direct support to those in need.

Families have a special place for reflection

An important part of providing care at Pali Momi

Medical Center is meeting the spiritual needs of

patients and their families. Located on the second

floor next to guest registration, the hospital’s

newly renovated chapel offers a peaceful reprieve

for those coping with the illness of a loved one.

The makeover was a collaborative effort between

Pali Momi leadership, staff and the community.

Staff pitched in to help with the planning and

construction. Donations to the hospital provided

new paint, flooring and a custom-designed,

stained-glass centerpiece enclosed in a light box.

“The chapel is a work of many people,” says

Pali Momi Chaplain Nathan Kohashi. “It’s a sacred

space used on a daily basis where people come

to find a sense of peace in the midst of pain.”

Jones created the chapel’s centerpiece—a stunning stained-glass design featuring an image of the

hospital’s iconic sculpture, the ‘aina lani. She also generously built and donated the light box.

Island families receive the comfort they need

The Mitch Kouchi Surgery Center Waiting Area

lounge and consultation room, is named in

recognition of Mitch Kouchi, a member of a

long-time Kaua‘i family that has made generous

contributions to the hospital. “It is especially

fitting that this gift is named in recognition of

a family that has done, and continues to do, so

much for our Garden Island community,” said

Kathy Clark, president and CEO of Wilcox and

CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic. “We are honored

to work alongside them and the anonymous

donor who made the contribution on his behalf,

to help the residents of Kaua‘i.”

For 25 years, Pali Momi Medical Center has grown along with the communities it serves —

anticipating the needs of patients, and expanding the hospital and services to meet them.

For decades, there were few who believed a state-of-the-art hospital belonged outside of

Honolulu. Fortunately, through the hard work of a handful of doctors from Pearl City and a

petition signed by thousands of neighborhood residents, Pali Momi opened in ‘Aiea in 1989.

Built by community members to fill an

important need, Pali Momi became a trusted

place for residents. Today, the hospital is on

the leading edge of health care in Hawai‘i,

providing nationally recognized, quality care

and patient service.

Pali Momi has pioneered many firsts and

advances in health care for Central and

West O‘ahu, including the first cardiac

catheterization unit, first retina center in the

state, a fully accredited bariatric surgery

program and a comprehensive women’s

center, equipped with the latest technology.

Unique to Pali Momi is its approach to

emergency medicine. With “Team Triage,”

board-certified emergency physicians are able

to see patients more quickly.

As a not-for-profit hospital, Pali Momi relies on

donor contributions as an important part of

caring for the community. They allow Pali Momi

to provide specialty care, and care for anyone

who needs it.

“We at Pali Momi take our obligation to the

community seriously,” said James Kakuda, MD,

Pali Momi’s chief of staff. “We work for, and

stand by, our patients. Gifts to Pali Momi help

us improve our community’s health, happiness

and hope.”

Pali Momi Celebrates 25 Years of Caring for the Community

Pali Momi continues to be a leader in innovation and technology. Dr. James Kakuda, chief of staff at Pali Momi, with the da Vinci robot-aided system—the latest in minimally invasive surgery.

Under the direction of Dr. Gregg Kokame, The Retina Center at Pali Momi Medical Center is an internationally recognized center for retinal care research and education. Dr. Kokame, medical director of the Retina Center, has been affiliated with Pali Momi since it opened in 1989.

Pali Momi has provided high-quality programs and services to Central and West O‘ahu since it opened 25 years ago.

Dr. Mark Grief, who has been affiliated with Pali Momi since it opened, is chair of the Pali Momi Medical Center Board

and medical director of the hospital’s accredited and comprehensive bariatric surgery program.

A family tradition of giving helps keiki

Tanioka’s Seafoods & Catering in Waipahu is legendary for serving up quality, local-style favorites

with a friendly smile. The Tanioka family’s strong connection with the community extends beyond

their business ventures to support keiki through Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

“For us, giving to Kapi‘olani helps the community,” said Mel Tanioka, who started the family-run

business 36 years ago with his wife, Lynn. “Lynn chose Kapi‘olani as our main beneficiary because

it’s an investment for the children of Hawai‘i.”

For the past eight years, the family

and staff of Tanioka’s have channeled

their passion and resources to make a

difference in the lives of children at

Kapi‘olani. Tanioka’s Charity Foundation

hosts an annual signature golf

tournament that raises thousands of

dollars for local charities, with Kapi‘olani

named as its main beneficiary.

Recently, the foundation made a

generous contribution to support the

hospital’s Children’s Cancer Center and

pediatric programs.

“If we don’t help now, it could

jeopardize the availability of medical

care for children in an emergency,” said

Tanioka. “It’s reassuring to know that

Kapi‘olani will be here for all families

now and in the future.”

A West O‘ahu production benefits the children of Hawai‘i

More than 3,000 people attended the Ko Olina Children’s Film & Music Festival, a benefit

for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. With film screenings, such as Disney’s

“Finding Nemo,” performances by Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Sistah Robi Kahakalau,

and activities with Disney characters, the event provided a day of fun for all.

A “floating” stage and a fiery sunset provided a dramatic backdrop as Jeffrey R. Stone,

Ko Olina Resort Association president and CEO of The Resort Group, presented a $50,000

check to Kapi‘olani toward the Campaign for Hawai‘i’s Children. The contribution included

festival proceeds and a dollar-for-dollar match from the Ko Olina Resort Association.

Giving together makes a big impact on the Garden Island

Kaua‘i’s residents depend on Wilcox Memorial Hospital

for emergency services 24/7. Physicians and staff supported

innovation in the Emergency Room through gifts from

their 2014 Employee Giving Campaign. Contributions will

fund state-of-the-art Philips Intellivue monitors to allow

emergency staff to efficiently track vital functions and

allow for safer sedations.

Violeta Arnobit joined Pali Momi Medical Center as a nurse when it opened in 1989. While she

traded in her uniform years ago to launch Ace Medical, Inc., a medical supply business that

she owns today with her husband, Terry, Arnobit remains dedicated to supporting the hospital

where she has been both the provider and recipient of its outstanding care.

In addition to working at Pali Momi, Arnobit has experienced the hospital

as a patient, board member and dedicated donor. Recently, instead of a

big gift to themselves for their 25th wedding anniversary, the Arnobits

celebrated quietly and made a generous gift toward a room sponsorship

at the Pali Momi Women’s Center, a place close to their hearts.

As director of the Pali Momi Women’s Center, Nancy Von Borzestowski sees

firsthand the significance that the center has to women of all ages by

providing comprehensive women’s health services to patients in Central and

West O‘ahu. “With all the demands that women face, many do not make their own health a

priority,” said Von Borzestowski. “We help alleviate some of those barriers by offering

advanced technology in a newly expanded and comfortable setting, with convenient hours.”

“The Women’s Center is critical to our community,” said Arnobit. “And giving to support the

center is truly an honor for me. It was important to honor my mom, who died of cancer, as well

as for me and the other women out there. Together, we can do more to serve and meet the

health care needs of our community.”

The wall is dedicated to the women who come to the center seeking better health. The

butterflies on the wall represent the power of change. Pali Momi is grateful to the donors who

Dreams can come true

For some medically fragile patients at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, the

dream of attending their school’s prom is not possible. Staff and volunteers came together with

generous vendors and companies from the community to create a full-scale version of prom

in the hospital, complete with deejay, picture taking, formal wear and more. Friends and family

joined patients in a safe setting for a fun and unforgettable experience.

Hawai‘i’s college athletes are ahead of the game

Hawai‘i Pacific Health has partnered with the University of Hawai‘i’s John A. Burns School

of Medicine (JABSOM) and Athletics Department to support the UH JABSOM Primary Care

Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health works with the University to improve health care services for its varsity

intercollegiate student-athletes by offering well-coordinated and comprehensive care across

the Hawai‘i Pacific Health system. The partnership also enables Hawai‘i Pacific Health to

support physician training and research in the field of sports medicine.

Dr. Justin Young, Sports Medicine faculty at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, serves as a sports medicine physician at the Straub Bone & Joint Center and a team physician for the UH Manoa Athletics Department. Dr. Young is directly involved with providing and coordinating care for student athletes through the UH JABSOM Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Donors help to support Straub’s Bone & Joint Center.

The human heart is essential to life and vitality. Yet imagine if your child’s heart was not

functioning properly. Who would you turn to?

When Jullie and Jay Passos found out their son, Keegan, would be born with a heart

defect after 32 weeks in utero, they turned to the maternal fetal medicine specialists and

neonatologists at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

At birth, Keegan was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot and Pulmonary Atresia, a rare

condition that accounts for only about 2 percent of congenital heart disease. His first open

heart surgery took place at 6 months old. This would be the first of many surgeries to

follow. His surgeons put a total of 10 stents in his arteries to assist his heart function, along

with a pacemaker.

Now 16 years old, Keegan knows how lucky he is to be alive. As a teen mentor in Kapi‘olani’s

Kardiac Kids program, he shares his experiences as a young heart patient with other children

who depend on his support to cope with similar medical challenges.

Keegan’s positive outlook is one of the many reasons he was chosen as Hawai‘i’s 2014

Children’s Miracle Network Champion. The program honors remarkable children who have

triumphed despite severe medical challenges. Only one child from each state is selected

per year.

As Hawai‘i’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, Kapi‘olani is here to help Hawai‘i’s keiki,

regardless of illness, injury or ability to pay. Support from generous donors ensures the

continuation of this exceptional, lifesaving care.

A caregiver continues to touch lives

Mary Wilkerson touched many lives as a medical-surgical and chemotherapy nurse

at Pali Momi Medical Center. Her legacy of caring for patients with cancer lives on in

memoriam through a scholarship funded by her hospital family. The collective gifts

from Pali Momi doctors, nurses, employees and friends made it possible to fund the

Mary Wilkerson Memorial Scholarship Program for at least 10 years.

The scholarship is awarded each May during Nurses’

Week to Pali Momi employees who wish to pursue

oncology nursing certification. Recipients display the

characteristics that Wilkerson embodied and believed

were important for a nurse, such as being passionate,

compassionate, respectful, professional, helpful

and accountable.

“I work with patients every day who have been

affected by cancer,” said Balbino Canoy, a medical-

surgical nurse at Pali Momi who worked with

Wilkerson, and is the first recipient of the scholarship.

“With my oncology certification, I want to be able to

help them better cope with the process at every stage

of their treatment.”


Kaua‘i’s children are cared for close to home

Every September, members and staff at Kaua‘i Community Federal Credit Union (KCFCU)

gear up for a time-honored tradition—an annual charity golf tournament benefitting Wilcox

Memorial Hospital. KCFCU has hosted this event for 14 years, raising more than $250,000 over

the years, to support pediatric programs and services for hospitalized keiki treated at Wilcox

Memorial Hospital. For KCFCU leaders and members, the gift is especially important, because

100 percent of every dollar donated stays on Kaua‘i to help keiki and their families.

Neighbor island families feel the aloha

Through a special partnership, a $100,000 gift to

Hawai‘i Public Radio developed into one million

HawaiianMiles that help neighbor island families in

need fly to O‘ahu to be with their loved ones who

are under care at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for

Women & Children.

Gail Myers grew up in a military family and moved to Hawai‘i when her father was assigned

to duty at Hickam Air Force Base. She fell in love with Hawai‘i upon arrival and knew she never

wanted to leave.

Myers dreamed of going to college, believing it would make her independent and give her the

ability to help her family in the future. She worked to pay for her education and became the

first member of her family to obtain a college degree when she graduated from the University

of Hawai‘i at Manoa.

When Myers needed vascular surgery, she turned to the experts at Straub Clinic & Hospital

who became part of her family too. Dr. Elna Masuda and nurse Darcy Kessler are just two

members of the Straub team who saved her life not once, but twice.

Myers would again turn to Straub, but this time it would be for different reasons. “I wanted

to honor the family I loved—my late grandfather and parents, and my inimitable companion

Beaux, who taught me about a different kind of love from one of God’s creatures,” said Myers.

“I also wanted to acknowledge my new family members, the physicians and staff at Straub who

saved my life.”

Together with the Straub Foundation, Myers created the Gail Myers Fund for Vascular Medicine

for the advancement of vascular care so that patients will be able to benefit from the same

high-quality expertise and compassionate care that she received as a patient at Straub.

Philanthropic contributions to the

Playroom at Kapi‘olani help our pediatric

patients cope with their hospitalization

and treatment by offering them a special

place for fellowship and fun.

KAPI‘OLANI WOMEN’S AMBULATORY CANCER CENTER

Funds are used to improve the delivery

of treatment and comfort for patients

fighting cancer.

THE SEX ABUSE TREATMENT CENTER

Funds support Kapi‘olani’s statewide

program that provides Hawai‘i’s

sexual assault victims with 24/7 crisis

intervention, medical-legal examinations,

EndowmentsEndowments are permanent funds in which principal funds are held in perpetuity and only the

investment income is paid out annually. Establishing an endowment is a way to create a permanent

legacy in your name or the name of a loved one, as well as ensure that the hospital programs

important to you continue to flourish for generations to come. The minimum gift to establish a

named endowment is $25,000.

2013 Employee Giving CampaignAs a not-for-profit health care system, Hawai‘i Pacific Health and its affiliated hospitals and clinics depend

on the generosity of our community of donors, including employees, to support our mission of providing

high-quality care to every patient, every time. Each August, the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Employee Giving

Campaign gives our employees the opportunity to support the programs and services they care about at

all of our campuses, as well as in the community.

The 2013 campaign raised nearly $640,000 to support designated programs at our hospitals. This

demonstrates our employees’ commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate health care to the

people of Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region.

KAPI‘OLANI CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK

Since 1986, Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network has

been generating funds and awareness for the support

of vital medical care and treatment every child in our

community deserves. Gifts support direct patient

care, specialized medical equipment, neighbor island

travel and patient transport, and lifesaving research

and preventive education. One hundred percent of all

funds stay in Hawai‘i and support pediatric programs

at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN

Kapi‘olani has many programs and services that

are vital to the mission of caring for the women,

children and adolescents of Hawai‘i. This year’s

contributions supported the renovation and

expansion of the hospital, which will provide 70

new, private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rooms,

14 private Pediatric Intensive Care Unit rooms,

expanded family waiting areas, 12 additional

women’s medical and surgical rooms, and a new

education space.

PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER

Financial means should never determine a person’s

ability to receive quality health care. This year, gifts

to Pali Momi supported 165 patients through the

Pali Momi Ohana Fund. The fund assists patients

with many services and equipment not covered by

insurance. Examples include helping patients obtain

critical medications they cannot afford or are unable

to receive through other means, transportation

between their homes and medical facilities, as well

as helpful medical aides such as walkers and bedside

commodes. These services enable patients to move

forward quickly with their treatments or return home

and avoid a possible readmission.

STRAUB CLINIC & HOSPITAL

When patients cannot afford the medical care that

they need, it is difficult for them to recover from

an illness or injury. Often that care extends beyond

the bedside and discharge. Patient long-term health

is a concern when discharged patients are unable to

pay for medications, medical supplies, transportation,

rehabilitation, respite care or temporary housing.

Donations to Straub supported 200 patients through

the Kokua Fund. The fund helps uninsured and

underinsured patients transitioning at discharge from

Straub with access to medical support that will

provide comfort and advance their recovery.

WILCOX HEALTH

Kaua‘i has a very high incidence of colon cancer and

it is important to provide the community with the

best advantage for diagnosis and treatments. Wilcox’s

efforts remain focused on improving cancer care on

the Garden Island. Donations from the Employee

Giving Campaign helped to provide new equipment

for early detection and prevention of colon cancer.
