015Friends of

CMMB,I write to you today full of gratitude for many things, but especially for the gift that you are to CMMB. I am feeling especially grateful, having just returned from Haiti, where I met pregnant women full of hope and heathy kids, completely absorbed in play (and basically ignoring me!). I am grateful for the opportunities to see communities with renewed vision and promise, all because of what we are doing together, and the wider world is taking notice.

I’m proud to announce CMMB has earned our fifth

consecutive Charity Navigator 4-star rating.

Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that we adhere to good governance and that we efficiently manage your resources to further our mission. These ratings are the foundation for your trust and have allowed us to be recognized by CNBC as one of the top 3 charities changing the world in 2015.

The American author, Willa Cather wrote, “Where there is great love, there are always miracles.” Your love and generosity made miracles happen this year. Our combined efforts have reached 447,566 persons globally, with tangible improvements to their

health status this year. These healthy people can focus on the hard work of raising strong families, earning a decent wage, going to school, and finding the dignity to reach their God-given potential.

So, as I seek to live out my own calling this holiday season, I ask you to join with me in performing simple acts of generosity towards those God puts along our path. Join our movement of love, and miracles.

“(I’m) praying to God for health, to be able to educate

His children…”- Festus Kilile

015Festus Kilile thought

her years of child rearing were long done. Grandmother to three healthy grandchildren, she took the arrival of the fourth in stride. Her daughter-in-law, Ndunge, had easy births, and Festus herself was a traditional birth attendant.

Even though Kenya suffers from some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world, Festus never dreamed that there would be

terrible complications when baby Titus was born.

All night long, the women prayed, but Festus could not stop Ndunge’s bleeding. The nearest health care center was closed. There was no way to get Ndunge to the nearest hospital, 25 miles away.

A new grandchild was born. A beloved daughter-in-law died. Festus is now mother and grandmother.

While Festus fears for the children’s future, she has great faith.

Even though Festus feels overwhelming sorrow and guilt for the loss of her daughter-in-law, she can’t give up.

Four little lives depend on her for food, water, shelter and love. Now six weeks old, baby Titus is at the greatest risk. His infant formula costs the family 1,000 Kenyan shillings (approximately $10 US) for a tin that will feed him for only four days.

Through your support, some of Festus’ prayers have been answered. Your generosity has guaranteed a steady supply of infant formula for baby Titus, which the family simply cannot afford. Every year in Kenya, approximately 8,000 women die from complications during pregnancy and childbirth, leaving thousands of motherless, at risk babies like Titus. Your generosity is helping many of them.

Systemic poverty perpetuates tragically high mother and child mortality rates, and malnutrition.

The families in this remote, rural community struggle to survive climate change, high unemployment, and chronic health issues. That’s why your ongoing support of the Children and Mothers Partnerships (CHAMPS) program is so critical to this community.

Obstacles to good health» Prolonged drought

means safe drinking water sources are drying up or being polluted.

» Lack of safe hand washing practices causes widespread, chronic diarrhea, especially among children.

» Two government posted medical doctors and two doctors employed by the Mutomo Mission Hospital serve more than 70,000 people. That means one doctor for every 17,500 patients.

Celebrate what CHAMPS has achieved so far» Continuing medical

education training (CME) for 120 critical health personnel is improving the quality of healthcare in remote villages.

» Reached 32,166 children with critical polio vaccines, 99% of the targeted child population.

» Trained a robust network of 274 community health volunteers.

» Supported Ministry of Health outreaches to 16,723 women and children by providing transportation to remote villages.

The women and children of Mutomo, Kenya need your help

You can make a difference...Let the most vulnerable families know they are not forgotten.

$34provides a year of water treatment products for an entire family

$350 supports a mom through pregnancy (includes 4 antenatal visits and vitamins) and health insurance for hospital clinic delivery and postnatal check up

Your generosity purchased the first ultrasound machine in Mutomo, and funded the renovation of the local health center. By December, 35,437 women, children and family members will have access to outpatient healthcare services.

$6,000keeps a clinic running and stocked for a year with essential medicines and personnel to keep women and children alive

Meaningful purpose for student researchersIn 2012, The Eck Institute for Global Health at the University of Notre Dame and CMMB began a partnership to provide students with international research experience while helping vulnerable women and children. Notre Dame graduate students in the Master of Science in Global Health program have completed important research and field work in Peru, sending a student each year for the past three years. Their research has focused on work with mothers and babies as part of our CHAMPS initiative. Thank you University of Notre Dame. With a shared foundation of Catholic faith and mission to serve, these young people bring love, respect, and passion to the field and the future, toward addressing health disparities.
