Thank you to all those who are willing to help with this important ministry of keeping our church clean and beautiful.

Those interested in joining this ministry please call the Church Office.

Sunday’s Readings: First Reading - Do we not have one father? Did not the one God create us? (Malachi 1:14b - 2:2b, 8-10). Psalm - In you, Lord, I have found my peace (Psalm 131). Second Reading - You have received not a human word but the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13). Gospel - Call no one your father on earth; you have but one Father, the one in heaven (Matthew 23:1-12). THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 5, 2017

PRAYERS FOR THE DECEASED - Please pray for Guido Bucci. May his family find hope and consolation through their faith in the resurrected Lord.

SANCTUARY LAMP - The lamp is burning this week in memory of Roman & Helena Bieniek - Family.

CHAPEL LAMP - The lamp is burning this week in memory of Major Tom Carr - Mom, Dad, & Sister. When at Mass offer the Mass for Vocations by

praying the prayer below... Serra Prayer for Vocations

O God, who wills not the death of a sinner * but rather that he be converted and live * grant we beseech you * through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin * Saint Joseph, her spouse * St. Junipero Serra * and all the saints * an increase of laborers for your Church * fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls * through the same Jesus Christ * Your Son * Who lives and reigns with You * In the unity of the Holy Spirit * God forever * and ever. Amen.

Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: Nov. 5: Ed B., Joyce K., Chuck & Linda R. Nov. 6: Maxine B., Denise & Michael G., Bernie H., Susan F. Nov. 7: Margaret K. Nov. 8: Peggy C., Tim G., Pat H., Catilda M., Patricia P., Diane & Bill S., Jean V., Ann S. Nov. 9: Ellie A., Elaine S., Jane D., Bill C. Nov. 10: Ann T., Veronica W., Peg Z., Pat C., Pat M., Mary S. Nov. 11: Dave D., Paul M., Connie & Jack S. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 454-8974. There are no dues, no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OLP 31 Club Praying for vocations every day of the year!

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA

From the Pastor’s Desk… To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace-

Welcome to National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW)! NVAW is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved to mid-January to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November. Presumably this is to move away from the month of January which already includes Migration Week, Christian Unity Week, and Catholic Schools Week. It is now associated with the week right after All Saints Day (November 1st) as a tie in to our vocation to be saints.

So in the spirit of NVAW I want to bring to your attention three opportunities to get involved: One- this Monday, November 6th we will have our monthly Youth and Vocation Holy Hour from 7-8pm to pray for and with our youth. One unique aspect of the Holy Hour this month is that Bishop Persico will be there to pray with us! Since we are incorporating it with our St. Andrew Dinner, Fr. Mike Polinek, the Diocesan Vocation Director, will lead the holy hour and Bishop Persico will pray with us in the pews. Two- also on Monday we have a St. Andrew Dinner (5:30-7pm) for young men who are open to the call to priesthood so please help us invite any male grade 6 and up who might have the qualities that would make a good priest (remember that promoting vocations is ALL of our business!). If you have someone you would like to recommend to me or Fr. Kyle and then we can invite them- we would be happy to do it that way as well.

Three- We are introducing a new initiative at OLP called the “Traveling Chalice” in which families or individuals agree to take the chalice to their home for a week as a commitment to pray for vocations in an intentional way. The chalice will be handed out at the end of the Mass that the family or individual attends that weekend as a way to remind all of us to keep “asking the harvest master to send laborers for the harvest” (Matthew 9:38). There is more information about how to sign up for the Traveling Chalice in another part of the bulletin.

May God bless our church with more vocations to the priesthood, religious life, holy marriage and single life for service… and our week ahead! Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich

Our Lady of Peace…. pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church…. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie…. pray for us! Other notes from the pastor… **Divine Mercy Encounter Retreat (DME) Next weekend I will be one of the spiritual directors for the DME Retreat which is held at St. Joseph Bread of Life Parish from Friday through Sunday. Fr. Jason Feigh will be covering the 4:30pm Mass on Sunday and Fr. Kyle will celebrate the rest of the Masses. Please keep the team

and all the participants in your prayers and know that you are always in mine! **Book of Remembrance/All Souls Day Every November we pray for our beloved dead in a special way. You are still encouraged to write the names of your loved ones who have died in the book of remembrance which is now in the sanctuary of the church as a way to physically reinforce our commitment to pray for our beloved dead throughout that month. **”Land of Peace” Sales This weekend (November 4/5) Land of Peace Woodcarvings will be at OLP. Through sales of statues and other items that have been carved from wood from the Holy Land, they help support Christians still living in the land of Christ’s birth who are in much need of support. See elsewhere for more details.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 5, 2017

A Family Perspective In today’s gospel Jesus describes the vocation of

marriage and parenting: “The greatest among you must be your servant.” Children receive our genes, name and resources; and spouses share a lifelong commitment. A parent’s servitude begins at the

moment of conception, and the marriage covenant begins on the wedding day. The Lord is present in

each of our acts of selfless service.

Traveling Vocation Chalice Prayers for Vocations

To promote family prayer and awareness of vocations, we are introducing The Traveling chalice Program. It will be easy to participate in the program. Each week, a parishioner will take the Chalice home, put it in a prominent place and pray daily for vocations. In response to Christ’s call, “Pray the LORD of the Harvest that there be laborers for the vineyard.”

Suitable prayers are included. You may wish to talk to your family about vocations, the need for priests and religious and how they can affirm priests and religious in their vocations.

This weekend sign-up for your week to host the Vocation Chalice. Any questions, please contact: Dave Wayman, 454-8974, or [email protected].
