• "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.“

Pledge of Alligence• The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist

minister Francis Bellamy.• It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September

8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

• Proper Etiquette • One should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over

the heart. • When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress

with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

• People in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

Glossary• Allegiance= Loyalty or the obligation of loyalty, as to a

nation, sovereign, or cause.

• Community= a. A group of people living in the same locality and under the same government.

b. The district or locality in which such a group lives.

• Socialist = a person who believes or takes part in a political and economic theory or system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned by

the community collectively, usually through the state

• Standing “at attention”= Arms to the side, along the seams of the trousers, Head and eyes straight forward, Keeping the heels together, toes apart
