You shall count off seven weeks of years, seven times seven years….And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year. It shall be a Jubilee for you! (from Leviticus 25)

This summer begins Temple Sinai’s Jubilee year. A half-century is quite an accomplishment and it is a most appropriate time to reflect, appreciate, take stock and celebrate!

Consider the extraordinary story of our congregation. Rabbi Ray Zwerin led a few dozen brave families to create a congregation that reflected the openness of Reform Judaism as well as the heimische warmth and respect for Jewish tradition. Their vision attracted hundreds of families. In time, our congregation has grown to well over 1,000 families, one of the 50 largest congregations in the Reform movement. But our size is not the story. Rather, each family, each member, every child and every adult who has studied here, prayed here, and participated in programs here has added a vital chapter to the narrative of our Sinai community. Therefore, we will devote this year, our Jubilee-50th year, to recall the highlights and the challenges. We will celebrate the men and women who established the foundation of our congregation. We will honor those who have shared their leadership, their skills, their talent and their energy in order to create and serve our congregation. We will give thanks to those who have contributed the vital financial support to keep our community strong and ensure its future.

We’ll have reunions for teachers and students, youth groupers and chavurah members. We will devote time to collect and organize the details of our history for the archives. And we’ll embrace and encourage our newer members and friends because their stories will be Sinai’s unfolding future. (Imagine what stories they will tell 50 years from now!)

During this Jubilee year, we will gain a better appreciation for the amazing story of Temple Sinai----the on-going narrative that is being expressed every day by you!

Stay tuned because in the pages of the Kesher, on our Website, by email and by phone calls, we’ll learn more about the exciting events of Sinai’s Jubilee year. Of course, your ideas will be quite welcome!

Our ancestors taught us to sanctify the 50th year, to consider its holiness. Let this year be one of a renewal of spirit, enthusiasm, and commitment to our beloved Sinai!

B’vrakhah,

Rabbi Rick Rheins

Healing Services Thursday, July 21 and August 25

at 11:00 a.m.

For our Healing Service, we gather together for prayers, meditations, and the warm embrace of friends to renew our sense of hope, strength and healing.

All are welcome. If you are unable to attend the service, just send to us the name(s) of the loved ones you would like mentioned during our healing prayers. Be sure to let them know that they are in all of our thoughts and prayers.

Tisha b’Av Service Saturday Evening, August 13 at 7 PM

Tisha b’Av, the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av, is the saddest day of the Jewish year because it marks the anniversary of the destruction of the first Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians (586 BCE) and the destruction of the second Temple by the Romans (70 CE). In reflection of the tragic events that have occurred on this day, Tisha b’Av has long been observed as a day of fasting and mourning.

In addition to the destruction of the Temples, many other catastrophes have fallen on this very same date. For instance, in 1492, Jews had until the 9th of Av to flee Spain. Also, on August 1, 1914, the 9th of Av, the formal order of mobilization was ordered by the Germans and World War I began.

Temple Sinai’s observance of Tisha b’Av begins at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13 and will include a service and readings from the book of Lamentations. The prophet Jeremiah was said to have written Lamentations as he witnessed the fall of Jerusalem some 2,500 years ago. Together we will read and discuss his words and have a service that reflects the meaning of this ancient day of mourning.

Ritual ColumnRabbinic Student from Germany to Intern at Temple Sinai July 19-27

Temple Sinai has had a wonderful relationship with students from the town of Bünde, Germany. We have hosted Bünde students three times and Temple Sinai students have visited Germany twice. With each visit, we have studied, explored, and established wonderful friendships. One of the Bünde students, a young man named Peter, pursued an even deeper connection with Judaism and the Jewish people. Peter adopted a new name, Lior Bar-Ami, and is now a rabbinic student who will soon be an ordained Rabbi! In preparation for his rabbinate, Lior will be visiting Temple Sinai to learn more about serving a synagogue. During his visit, he’ll teach a session of Lunch & Learn (noon on July 21), deliver a sermon (Friday, July 22 at 6 p.m.), attend our Shabbat morning minyan (July 23 at 9 a.m.), observe B’nei Mitzvah services and even participate in the Brotherhood’s Bible & Beers (July 27).

We certainly hope that you’ll have the opportunity to meet and interact with Lior. All who have met him know that he is truly an outstanding young man and will be a tremendous asset for the European Jewish communities. There will be opportunities to take him to lunch or dinner, so please let us know if you are interested.

Here’s a bit more about Lior. During his high school years at Gymnasium am Markt in Bünde, Lior worked in the 'Netzwerk' group which researched the history of Bünde's Jews during the Holocaust. The group began as a school project wanting to create information for the school's exchange students of what had happened in Bünde during the Nazi regime. Having begun with researching the fate of the school's former student Bertha Bloch, who was murdered in Auschwitz, the group slowly but surely unearthed the fates of most of Bünde's Jews and got in touch with their surviving relatives.

In June 2001, on the invitation of Werner 'Red' and Elaine Spanier, Lior and a group of 12 other students and two teachers visited Temple Sinai for the first time. They spent three weeks in Denver presenting their research and meeting with Holocaust survivors and members of Temple Sinai.

After his graduation from high school, Lior attained a degree in British and American Literary and Cultural Studies and Romance languages and worked as a youth educator at the Liberal Jewish community in Hamelin, Germany. Having spent a year at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem, Lior returned to Germany to begin his rabbinical studies at the Reform Abraham Geiger College in 2012. As Lior speaks five languages fluently, he was privileged to work with communities throughout Europe from Gothenburg in Sweden to Rome in Italy during his time at the college.

Lior will graduate this summer and will be ordained on December 1, 2016. After graduation, he will be taking a position as a community Rabbi in Toulouse, France.

Lior will be spending three weeks in the United States with two congregations: Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, VA, and here at Temple Sinai in Denver. He is especially looking forward to returning to Temple Sinai to see old friends and to make new ones.

From Rabbi Susan Rheins

It was in July of 1966 when I first climbed aboard a bus whose destination was the YM-YWHA day

camp in West Paterson, NJ. For four weeks that year and the following five summers, I attended this Jewish day camp where I learned many life skills, including swimming, plastic lanyard making and playing Newcomb. Friday afternoons were always special, as all the campers gathered together for a Shabbat-prep program. From the outset I loved camp (except for the bus that belched diesel exhaust) and couldn’t wait to leave home each morning for another day’s adventure. In 1972, I “graduated” to a Jewish overnight camp, UAHC Joseph Eisner Camp Institute for Living Judaism in Great Barrington, MA, where I spent 11 summers growing up, from camper to counselor to Rabbinic faculty. From “my” camp in the Berkshire Mountains of western MA to UAHC Swig Camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains of northern CA and points in between, summer, for me, has been defined by a Jewish camp experience. This year, my Jubilee anniversary of Jewish camping, I return “home” to URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) where my sons and I have spent the past 16 summers. I am honored to be among the 40 Rabbis, Cantors and Jewish educators who will spend two weeks at GUCI. What do I do there? Unless I’m covering for a counselor who’s on a day off, you probably won’t find me at the pool, although you may find me in the kitchen washing dishes or at a grill flipping burgers. Mostly, I teach. I coach counselors responsible for planning their unit’s daily Jewish educational programs. I tutor B’nai Mitzvah students. I work with high school seniors, engaging them in Jewish learning and discussing with them ways to remain active in Jewish life as they go off to college. I schmooze with the staff, talking about life as a Jewish professional and impressing upon them the importance of remaining Jewish leaders and role models outside of camp.

There is quantitative evidence that summers at Jewish camps create adults who are engaged in Jewish practice and committed to the Jewish community (see http://www.jewishcamp.org/research). Temple Sinai is invested in all our youth having a Jewish summer camp experience. We host Jewish camp fairs. We offer Jewish camp scholarships. We provide resources to help every camper find the best “fit.” Jewish summer camp is the ideal complement to Temple Sinai’s Religious School and Youth Group programs. There are so many wonderful

Jewish camp programs from which to choose. We truly live in the “Golden Age” of Jewish summer camping!

I am grateful that my parents invested in years of Jewish summer camp for me, and I rejoice that my children feel a greater connection to the Jewish community and to Jewish practice because of their Jewish summer camp experience.

It’s not too late to enroll in a Jewish camp this summer, and registration for next summer is right around the corner. A lot has changed in the 50 years since I first climbed aboard that day camp bus, but not the fact that a Jewish camp experience has a profound, positive impact on the Jewish future of our children.

B’vrakhah from camp!

Chai-Lights From the President

This article gives me a great opportunity to reflect upon our Temple halfway through my term as President. Many would choose to look back at the past year and, in fact, the Kesher has many of my Chai-Lights of our accomplishments the past 12 months.

This is also a time to thank the many people who supported the Temple by volunteering their time or supporting us financially. I want to thank everyone for their commitment to Temple Sinai.

Executive Functioning: What is it? Why is it important? Can it be

improved?Wednesday, August 31 at 6:15 p.m.

Imagine the world as a large orchestra of musicians and instruments. Now, imagine if there was no conductor. Executive functioning is the conductor for all the information we need to successfully manage life—work, school, personal relationships and social interactions.Executive functioning is involved in skills like planning, attention, working memory, organization, problem solving and impulse control. So, basically, the skills you need to filter distractions, plan, prioritize and complete tasks, and control behavior and impulses based on past experience and current surroundings. Please join us as we welcome a special guest, Heather Hotchkiss. Heather is an expert on Executive Functioning and works as a Brain Injury Specialist for the Access, Learning, and Literacy Team within the Exceptional Student Services for the Colorado Department of Education.
