LENT

Fasting The law of the fast limits the amount of food consumed to one full meal a day. Some food may be eaten at two other times of the day but together they should not equal a full meal. No food may be eaten between meals. Catholics from the age of 18 until the age of 59 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

(see Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 1434 and 1438; also see the Code of Canon Law, nos. 1249-1253)

Abstinence The law of abstinence requires that no meat be eaten. In the U.S., those 14 years and older are obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday.

(see Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 1434 and 2043; also see the Code of Canon Law, nos. 1249-1253)

Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. Fast from worries and have trust in God. Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. Fast from pressures and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

“Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. . . . Jesus said to [the devil] in reply, ‘It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’ When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.” “In tempting Jesus, the devil tries to prove that he, not God, was in control. . . . Jesus refutes the devil at every turn, and does so by asserting God’s preeminence.” Source: Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2018-2019

A Message From The Principal…

Ash Wednesday and the days of Lent afford us a magnificent opportunity to work at strengthening our faith, to re-commit ourselves to place our trust in God, to acknowledge that He has our best interests at heart. Setting aside a few minutes each day of Lent will provide us with ‘a pause that refreshes,’ a bit of silence in the midst of the hectic pace of our everyday lives. Perhaps this pause might come while sitting in traffic, waiting for the subway, or waiting to go into the doctor’s office. Wherever you are able to find your pause, take it and turn your mind over to a brief reflection, whether it be a favorite passage from the Bible, a quote from a treasured book, a decade of the Rosary, an Our Father, or a prayer from your childhood! By the time we reach the Easter Alleluia, our trust, our faith, our lives, will be stronger and we will find ourselves closer to our God. We might even find that we have established a habit that will stay with us throughout the Easter season and beyond!

God Bless, Miss Koval

“I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10)

This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits,” the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is left over? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances.

This weekend is the collection for the Office of Concern. Non-perishable items should be placed in the elevator lobby. Supermarket gift cards can be purchased for the Office of Concern and are sold in the Narthex Office on Sundays after the 10 AM Mass and in the Academy Office Monday through Friday during regular school hours. Thank you for your generous support of the Office of Concern’s outreach efforts to those in our community.
