RESULTS OF THE MEMBERSHIP GRADES SURVEY – MAY 2020
YOU TALKED. WE LISTENED.
A big thank you to everyone who helped us shape the future of occupational safety and
health by completing the membership grades survey in May. The response was excellent,
with a quarter of members sharing their views.
The consultation is now closed and, having analysed all the feedback we received via the focus
groups, survey, email, forums and social networks, we’re taking the final proposed structure
through the governance process prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October.
We’ll share the final proposal with you in September. In the meantime, here are the
results of the survey and a few key facts in response to recurring questions.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING US SHAPE THE FUTURE OF

Q. Graduate Membership as a title has been questioned because it suggests those in this category are newly qualified, and it is not obvious they are experienced practitioners. Considering the other IOSH
membership grade titles and those used by other organisations, we are proposing a change to Certified Member. Do you feel this is a suitable alternative or do you prefer one of the other options listed?

AT LEAST FOUR FIFTHS OF MEMBERS IN ALL MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES AGREE WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGE TO CHARTERED MEMBERSHIP
Q. Feedback from our earlier consultation suggests that Chartered Membership requires enhancement to encompass the wider responsibilities of the OSH professional, such as leadership, planning, quality,
environment and ethical practice. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

THE MAJORITY OF MEMBERS AGREE WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE REQUIREMENT FOR TECHNICAL MEMBERSHIP
Q. To gain Technical Membership, IOSH currently requires a member to have two years’ full time experience operating at Technical level. However, our consultation with members suggests this could be reduced to a minimum of one year’s full time relevant experience operating at this level. To what extent would you support this change?

84% OF MEMBERS SUPPORT AN ALTERNATIVE ‘EXPERIENTIAL ROUTE’ TO IOSH MEMBERSHIP
Q. It is suggested that IOSH’s current entry requirements rely too heavily on formal qualifications and are therefore too rigid for some practitioners and senior professionals. Consequently, IOSH proposes to develop an alternative route that recognises OSH experience; this aligns with other professional bodies’ entry requirements. To what extent would you support the introduction of an ‘Experiential Route’ to IOSH membership?

THERE IS WIDESPREAD SUPPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE CHARTERED SAFETY AND HEALTH PROFESSIONAL DENOMINATION
Q. Currently Chartered Members can use the denomination ‘Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner’. Our earlier consultation suggests that ‘Chartered Safety and Health Professional’ would be more appropriate and better aligned to other professionals
who have Chartered status. To what extent would you support this change?

THE VAST MAJORITY AGREE WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGE TO GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP, REQUIRING A MINIMUM OF TWO YEARS’ EXPERIENCE
Q. To gain Certified Membership (currently Graduate Membership), IOSH requires a member to have completed an accredited qualification at Level 6. Experience is not currently assessed for this category of membership. However, our consultation with members suggests a minimum of
two years’ full-time relevant experience should be assessed. To what extent would you support this change?

NEARLY THREE QUARTERS STRONGLY AGREE WITH THE PROPOSAL FOR FELLOWSHIP TO INCLUDE THOSE WHO ARE ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTING TO THE OSH PROFESSION
Q. Consultation findings also suggest that the current process and assessment for Fellowship requires enhancement to be more inclusive of those who are actively contributing to the OSH profession. To what
extent do you agree or disagree with this?

MOVING FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE
Our consultation has been wide ranging and lively. The majority
of members supported the proposed changes and many people
engaged further through free text answers in the survey, in emails
and in forum threads.
As part of our commitment to keeping you informed, we’ve
tracked some of the recurring questions and concerns and created a
quick fact check piece to tackle some misconceptions head on. Take
a look at the following pages to see what’s true and what’s not.
Do you have the facts at your fingertips?
FACTMYTH
You won’t, as long as you complete your CPD (mandatory, as before) and
Ethics Certificate by April 2022.
I’m going to lose my Chartered status soon.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
No you don’t. You could progress to Chartered by developing your competence to Level 7 through
CPD activities.
I need another qualification to move from Graduate to Chartered as Level 6 isn’t
enough.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
Most members at this level will be eligible to transition to Technical. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to
discuss this.
The Associate grade is being removed so I’m out.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
We’ve been keeping employers and recruiters updated. If the changes are approved, we’ll invest in a campaign during the first half of 2021 to make
sure they’re aware of the changes and understand them.
These changes will confuse employers.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
Only exceptional cases will go straight to Chartered. Most experiential candidates
would progress to Chartered from Graduate.
The experiential route to membership will make it too easy to
achieve Chartered status.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
Qualifications, knowledge and experience all contribute to an individual’s professional
capability. The new structure is designed to recognise this and
strike a balance.
IOSH seems to value experience over qualifications.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
FACTMYTH
We anticipate that it’ll be part of your CPD, at no extra cost but we
can’t confirm until we’ve developed the detail for the Ethics Certificate, which is dependent on the outcome
of the review.
The Ethics Certificate will cost me.
Want to find out more? Check out our FAQs here.
SO WHAT’S NEXT?
We’ll update you further next month when we share the final proposed membership structure, along with more information about how the competencies will be mapped to grades.
