Fourteen year old Kenny is a young investor and futureOlympian track star (it’s his dream). He is interested in

learning about the country of China, the host of the 2008Summer Olympics. He wants to know why a city would want tohost the Olympics, what the economic benefits are, and the namesof U.S. companies doing business in China.

This is what Kenny haslearned:The People’s Republic ofChina, like India, is anemerging economicsuperpower. They are theworld’s fastest growingdeveloping nation. Theyhave the world’s largestpopulation with over 1.3billion people (the totalworld’s population is 6billion; the total USApopulation is about 290million).

On July 13, 2001, Beijing,China was awarded theopportunity to host the2008 Summer Olympics.

The Chinese government is planning to spend more than $23billion on improvements to the city of Beijing andsurrounding communities. Some of the improvementsinclude: buying 84 new subway trains and updating 60 oldones; building over 100 new hotels to accommodate the

hundreds of thousands of visitors;investing in 37 new gymnasiums andstadiums, and 59 training centers.

Why would a city go through suchtrouble to host the Olympics?

Mainly because of the belief thatthe world exposure will help thelocal economy. Approximately1 billion people will watch the2008 Summer Olympics andbillions of dollars will bespent on the local economyby the hundreds of thousandsof international visitors.

Many U.S. companies aredoing business in China

because of its large population, emerging economy and because

they’re the host of the 2008Summer Olympics.

BuybackThis is a company buying back its own stock. There areseveral reasons a company might do this: 1) They thinkthe stock is undervalued, that is, a better investment thaninvesting the money to expand the business; and 2) Toreduce the number of outstanding shares so the earningsper share will be higher.
