Birchot Kriat Shema (Artscroll Siddur pg.414)

“Enlighten our eyes in Your Torah”: Although the corpus of Torah today is huge,

there are nonetheless innovative and new Torah insights that each of us has the

capacity to add. Here we pray that Hashem enlighten our eyes to find those novel

ideas that only we are capable of bringing forth.

“Attach our hearts to Your commandments”: Once we learn about the mitzvot

through Torah study, we appreciate them more until we are attached to the

mitzvot. The more we learn, the more we appreciate mitzvot and the better

equipped we are to perform positive commandments and avoid negative

prohibitions.

D’var Torah : Rabbi Yosef Weinstock

During Torah reading people follow along either standing or sitting. However, as we read the

Ten Commandments everyone is requested to rise, if they are able to. This is in accordance

with the Ashkenazic tradition. This custom is not without its Halachik controversy. There’s a

Mishna in Masechet Tamid that states that there once was a practice in the Beit Hamikdash

for the Kohanim to read the Aseret Hadibrot as part of their daily Temple service. However,

this practice was soon abolished because of a concern referred to as “Taromot Haminim” –

the arguments of heretics. There was a fear that heretics would convince less knowledgeable

Jews that only the Ten Commandments are true and the rest of Torah is false. They would

point to the fact that the Ten Commandments received special treatment in the Beit

Hamikdash as their proof. This Mishna is the textual basis for not standing for the Ten

Commandments. The Rambam was strongly opposed to the custom to stand only for Aseret

Hadibrot. He felt that this practice undermines our belief in the validity of the entire Torah.

Yemenite and some other Sephardic communities follow the Rambam’s view.

The most common Ashkenazic practice is to allow, and even encourage, standing for

Aseret Hadibrot- especially on Shavuot. The reason is because on Shavuot we stand in order

to re-enact the event of Receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai as the pasuk says, (19:17):

“And the nation stood at the bottom of the mountain.”

The Midrash takes the idea even further. It states that every Jewish soul ever to be born,

as well as the souls of those who would convert throughout the ages, were spiritually present

at the time of Matan Torah. That means that when we stand for Aseret Hadibrot on Shavuot

morning, we were not just re-enacting an historical event, but re-experiencing in physical

terms something that our souls experienced 3331 years ago. This Midrash reinforces the

connection between Pesach and Shavuot. On Pesach we personalize the Exodus and

appreciate that event’s direct impact on our lives. So, too, on Shavuot we must personalize the

Sinai experience and appreciate the importance of Matan Torah in our own lives. Externally

we show this by standing during the reading of the Ten Commandments. But how else can we

foster a personal appreciation for the importance of Matan Torah?

The Talmud records a dispute between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua as to the most

appropriate way to celebrate Jewish holidays. According to Rabbi Eliezer a person’s Yom

Tov can be either spiritually focused- with an emphasis on prayer and Torah learning; or

physically focused, with an emphasis on eating and drinking. Rabbi Yehoshua believes that

the holidays should be evenly split between physical and spiritual pursuits.

Comes Rabbi Elazar and says:

“Hakol Modim Ba’Atzeret Deba’inan Nami Lachem.”

On Shavuot, everyone agrees that there must be some focus on the physical- ie eating

and drinking. This seems counter-intuitive. If anything, I would have thought that on the day

on which we receive the Torah, we should de-emphasize the physical and focus more on the

spiritual elements of the holiday.

Rabbi Elazar is teaching us a key to personalizing Matan Torah. We are better off for

receiving the Torah, and to demonstrate that we are encouraged to indulge in physical

enjoyment on Shavuot to reinforce the association between Torah and pleasure.

It is through personalizing the experience of Matan Torah, putting the “You” in Shavuot,

that we are able to fully celebrate this Yom Tov.

YIH Vaccination Policy

Resolution passed by the Young Israel of Hollywood Governing Board on

December 26, 2018: It is a religious requirement to get you and your child(ren)

vaccinated for the safety of each child and for the community at large. There is no

such thing as a Jewish/Halachic religious exemption to vaccinations. Shuls should

protect their members (especially those who are medically unable to be vaccinated)

by restricting access of those who choose to remain unvaccinated to shul programs

and events. Therefore, all adults, youth and teens attending Young Israel of

Hollywood programs or services, whether on or off our facility, must be fully

vaccinated according to standards of the State of Florida in order to participate in

our programs and services. The only exception to this policy is for those who are

unable to receive vaccines for valid medical reasons.

After Netanyahu Fails to Form Government, Israel to Hold New Election

After Prime Minister Netanyahu failed to form a governing coalition by the deadline, the Knesset voted Wednesday night to dissolve itself and hold an election once again, just seven weeks after the previous one, Haaretz reported. Israelis will return to the polls on September 17, two weeks before Netanyahu's pre-indictment hearing on a series of corruption charges against him on October 2 and 3. Coalition negotiations had been in a deadlock, caused by friction between Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman and the Hassidic faction of ultra-Orthodox party United Torah Judaism. At the source is the draft bill Lieberman submitted last term, which would require yeshiva students, who are currently exempt from Israel's otherwise mandatory conscription, to draft to the Israeli military. Lieberman's condition for joining the coalition was that the draft law pass as-is, whereas UTJ would not join if the law was not amended. Netanyahu failed to mediate between them before the deadline given to him by the president, making it impossible for him to form a coalition.

Our synagogue partners with AIPAC, America’s pro-Israel lobby, in educating our community on issues affecting the U.S.-Israel relationship. We encourage you to learn more by contacting AIPAC at (202) 639-5200 or by visiting www.aipac.org.

One of the most talked about results of the Governor’s Israel mission was the

Teach Florida visit to a Tel Aviv school to see the country’s school security

measures firsthand and meet with experts. Rep. Randy Fine, Sen. Lauren

Book, Speaker Designate Chris Sprowls, President Designate Wilton Simpson

and Mimi Jankovits saw Israel’s situational awareness strategies combined

with smart physical security measures and training that create safe schools in

ways that can easily be replicated in Florida. For more information, please
