Message from Jack o’brienPresident, Young Munster RFC
I would like to extend a warm Tom Clifford Park welcome to all officials, players and supporters visiting us on match days. It is a great honour for me to be elected President of Young Munster R.F.C. and I look forward to the 2012/13 matches and welcoming you all into the club afterwards for the celebrations, post mortems and friendly banter.
In these difficult financial times, Young Munster could not survive without the support of our main club sponsors bus Éireann, g.g.L. security, and The still House. To those and to each of our Yearbook sponsors also, I thank you all and I urge our supporters and members to support you in return.
To our supporters, this Club cannot survive without volunteers. Your Club needs you to help out in any way you can. Please contact any member of the committee if you have some free time as there are many tasks to be done and every small effort goes a long way.
I would like to wish our Club Captain, Hugh Mcgrath, and his squad, our Director of Rugby Mike Prendergast, Forwards Coach John ‘Paco’ Fitzgerald, assistant Forwards Coach Denis Leamy, and assistant backs Coach gearóid Prendergast and all other Coaches, Managers, background Personnel, grounds and Facilities Personnel, the very best of luck for the coming season. To our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, u-21, Women and underage squads may I wish you all a successful year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved behind the scenes, at every level, for their dedication to Young Munster. It is heartening to come out to the club on a sunday morning and see the number of young players of the future enjoying themselves training with the underage coaches.
Let’s hope the coming season is successful, enjoyable and injury free for all of our players.

I am delighted, as President of the Irish Rugby Football union, to extend my best regards to everyone at Young Munster RFC. I congratulate Jack o’brien on being elected President and I wish him and all your players at all grades every satisfaction and enjoyment in their respective activities this season.
as a rugby stronghold in your community, the Young Munster club has benefited greatly from the solid structures put in place down through the years. The dividend now is that the club has re-established itself as a formidable force at the top level of our club game.Third place last season in Division 1a of the new look ulster bank League makes its own statement as to the standards at Tom Clifford Park and I have no doubt that your senior squad will be in equally determined mood to again challenge for the title this season.
as the club experienced last season, the new 10-team home and away format in Division 1 was generally regarded as a success and I anticipate another stirring competition in both Divisions. Many memorable games, especially when it came down to dramatic promotion and relegation issues, created greater interest and this had the positive effect of generating great activity in the clubs on big match days. This is an important development for our clubs at a time when the economic downturn is creating many challenges across the board in Irish rugby.
Finally, I thank ulster bank as official partner in the IRFu’s Community Rugby Programme which includes sponsorship of the ulster bank League, the ulster bank bateman Cup, the Ireland club international team and the ulster bank Rugby Force initiative.best wishes for 2012-’13. Billy Glynn President IRFu
Meet the 125th IRFU President…William b. (billy) glynn has been elected the 125th President of the Irish Rugby Football union following a distinguished career as a rugby player and administrator. He is synonymous with the game in Connacht where he has been a leading and popular personality in the affairs of the game during all his adult life. In assuming the highest office in Irish rugby, glynn follows in the footsteps of fellow galwegians RFC members Henry anderson (1945-46), Johnny glynn (1958-59), Chris Crowley (1968-69), John Moore (1981 – 82), bobby Deacy (1996-97) and Don Crowley (2002 – 03).a retired solicitor and Revenue sheriff living in galway City, the new IRFu President first came to sporting prominence while a schoolboy at garbally Park College where he showed early promise in athletics and rugby. He played for the galwegians RFC winning Connacht senior Cup team in 1960 while still attending school. While studying law in Dublin between 1961 and ’64, he played for uCD’s winning Leinster senior Cup team in 1963-’64. He was also capped for the Irish universities against the touring springboks in april, 1965 when the Irish students recorded an historic first ever victory by a team from Ireland over south africa¸ winning 12-10 at Thomond Park. on returning to galway, he played as a speedy wing threequarter for galwegians RFC and the Connacht senior interprovincial team for a number of years. He was also selected for a Final Irish Trial in 1965 and was chosen on an Ireland under 23 XV. but in 1966 at the age of 24 his career was curtailed due to a serious neck injury. The injury also ended a successful career in athletics during which he was crowned Irish national champion in both track and field. In 1960 he represented Ireland in the European student games in san sebastian and in 1962 at the age of 20 he was elected to the Central Council of the national athletics and Cycling association (naCa) on the platform of advancing unity in Irish athletics. In his rugby administrative career, glynn was Chairman of the Connacht senior team selection committee (1988-’06), Manager of the Connacht team between 1996 and 2000, President of the Connacht branch in 2000-2001 and from 2000 he has been a member of the IRFu Committee, notably holding the positions as Chairman of the Medical Committee, Chairman of the Disciplinary appeals Committee and as a member of the Representative game Committee. Residing in galway and married to Margaret, he has two sons, barry and Richard.
Message from billy glynn,President IRFu to Young Munster RFC
With the 2011/2012 ulster bank League providing nail-biting entertainment, displays from potential future internationals and a climax no one predicted, that time of year for new beginnings is here once again. Welcoming new members, plotting new tactics and renewing hopes and dreams – this is an exciting time for clubs across the country. Rugby is enjoying increasing popularity with the recent success of our national and provincial sides. However, where would Irish rugby be without the dedication shown in rugby clubs the length and breadth of the country? Irish rugby clubs are the backbone of Irish rugby. From underage to first-team players, hundreds of coaches pledge years to the development of players – players that will bring pride and togetherness to their community and clubs. This is ulster bank’s third season as the official Community Rugby Partner to the IRFu, a partnership which includes title sponsorship
of the League and of the Irish Club International team. as part of our ongoing commitment to communities across Ireland and our understanding that rugby clubs are the foundations of Irish rugby, we created a club volunteer initiative called ‘ulster bank RugbyForce’. The programme, which coincides with our overall sponsorship, is designed to provide rugby clubs with support to renovate and upgrade their facilities as well as unite club members and local volunteers.105 clubs from all over the country entered the 2011 / 2012 initiative. Four lucky clubs were awarded €5,000 worth of goods and resources. The four winning clubs (newbridge RFC, killarney RFC, ballyhaunis RFC and Donaghdee RFC) took part in the recent ulster bank RugbyForce Winning Weekends, which brought entire communities together to spend the day renovating their club’s facilities. see ulsterbank.com/rugby for more details and look out for your chance to enter your club in this season’s ulster bank RugbyForce programme.I speak for everyone at ulster bank when I say, we are all excited about the 2012 / 2013 season and I’d like to wish all teams the very best of luck.

The proud tradition that is the relationship between bus Éireann and Young Munster is now the longest standing sponsorship deal in Irish Rugby. after what must be considered a good season last term, there is plenty of room for optimism this year, with a finely balanced squad and management team ready to embark on this campaign. although there are plenty of changes to personnel, it is a credit to Mike Prendergast and his coaches that the strength in depth of the squad remains unaltered if not enhanced. as we say farewell to nay Cantillon, I am delighted to congratulate Jack o’brien on becoming our new President for 2012-13. Hopefully this year, we can improve on last year’s third place finish. Finally I would not only like to congratulate Hugh Mcgrath on becoming captain but I would also like to wish him, and the rest of the squad, the very best of the upcoming season.

Early season action…

Best wishes to Young Munster for the coming season
JusT 11 years from now we will be marking 200 years of homage to that ‘wild youngfella’ who in 1823 accidently invented the game of rugby football. William Webb Ellis was reputed to be a bit of a tear-away and when he spoiled a game of footie involving his fellow pupils at Rugby school by picking up the ball and running with it to the nearby village, he could not have realised that his action would be immortalised.almost two centuries since Webb Ellis’ spontaneous action, the game has changed beyond comprehension. If you can remember when the wingers threw the ball into the lineouts, then the bus pass could well be within your grasp. some would argue that in those amateur days, wingers played a similar role to a spectator: you got to wear the club jersey but you did not have the option of offering your personal opinion on his performance to the referee. Modern props now cover more ground in one game than their predecessors would register in an entire season, full-backs were required to have loud baritone voices so that referees would hear them shout ‘mark’ as they fielded the high ball and threee-quarters were so
…where 30 big, strong, fit, violent men run round a pitch
for 80 minutes knocking hell out of each other
called because they spent three-quarters of the game standing up doing nothing. The scottish writer alexander C Rae in his
booklet ‘bluff Your Way in Rugby’ described the game as “a sport where 30 big, strong, fit, violent men run round a pitch for 80 minutes knocking hell out of each other, after which these 30 men spend the evening drinking prodigious amounts of beer,
singing rude songs and playing interminable practical jokes.” That assessment could well have held some truth up to the late 1960s but the professional era has put paid to most off-field jolliment.as we approach the end of its second century, young billy Webb Ellis would feel quite chuffed
about the current state of the game. Television coverage has exploded
over the past two decades, more people of all ages (and of both sexes) are now involved in the game than ever before and rugby continues to be a big money-spinner at the top end of the sporting spectrum.Club rugby, however, remains the lifeblood of the game and Limerick clubs can take great pride in their efforts to promote it at all levels. a recent visit to a local city club one sunday morning provided an eye-opener with over 200 youngsters undergoing serious training by highly-motivated coaches. If this is
a health-check on the game by shannonside, then the future looks particularly bright.

Beautiful Beautiful MunstersStar of my soul fade away,
I sigh when I think of Young Munster
With whom I played many a game
Dublin can boast of Old Wesley,
Cork of the College and Con,
But Limerick can boast of Young Munster,
whose best games are yet to be seen.
Beautiful Beautiful Munsters
Star of my soul fade away,
I sigh when I think of Young Munster
With whom I played many a game
Now there was Bohs in red, UCC,
Garryowen are the boys in blue,
With Sunday’s Well, ‘twould be hard to tell,
What the Dolphin boys would do,
and Cons all white made a right good fight,
In the final well they showed,
But they all gave it up, for the Bateman Cup
Was won by the Yellow Road.
Then cheer, boys cheer, for our own fifteen
Of black and amber fame,
We’re a true home team, and have always been,
and we’re proud of Young Munster name
Their task well done, their victory won,
All glory to them is owed,
And we’ll sing our song, sing it all day long,
sing hurrah for the Yellow Road.
You can go up to the Bombin’ Field on Sunday,
Watch the young boys go out to train,
Sure it make an old man about sixty,
play the game over again.
