introduction from the president

The Young Originals Exhibition has exhibited the outstanding art work of secondary students enrolled in the Western Australian public education system for more than 20 years.

Since 2010, Young Originals has been funded by the Western Australian Secondary School Executives Association (WASSEA). It is hosted by Edith Cowan University and supported by the Department of Education through the Secondary Pathways and Transition Directorate.

Young Originals fosters creativity and collaboration. It provides an opportunity to promote the diversity of Visual Arts and Design programs and students’ creative talents.

The exhibition provides emerging artists with the chance to make connections with the arts community, to believe in their own potential and enrich their learning outcomes.

It showcases a diverse art collection which is a celebration of innovation, achievements and the unique and transforming learning activities provided in our schools.

I am delighted to congratulate the students and teachers who continue to make this exhibition a success.

CoNNiE PEtRillo

Connie Petrillo has a Masters in Curatorial Studies in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts and is currently a PhD candidate.

Connie is Curator and Manager of the St John of God Healthcare Arts Program and a practicing professional artist best known for her large-scale narrative paintings.

Paul uHlMaNN

Paul Uhlmann has worked as a practicing artist for over 30 years and works in painting, drawing, printmaking and artists books.

Paul’s work is held in many collections including National Gallery of Australia; Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria. He is currently Coordinator of the Visual Arts Course and Coordinator of the Print Studio at ECU.

bRENdaN HibbERt

Brendan Hibbert has worked in the publishing and graphic design industry since 1994 on some of Australia’s top full colour international trade magazines.

Brendan runs his own design studio in Perth and lectures graphic design and web development at Central Institute of Technology. He is the current state Treasurer and National Councillor of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) .
