Message from the CEO

My Dear Fortisians,

It’s a pleasure to touch base with you through another issue of The Fortisian.

Time flies really quickly.

I have been reflecting a bit as it has been exactly one year since I shared my first message with you through these pages. To date, it has been a tremendous journey and I hope you too feel that we are moving in the right direction.

Lots of things have been happening across our company lately. The most interesting thing is that our emphasis on ‘doing the right things’ -- for our patient, people and the organisation -- is beginning to resonate. Thanks to all of your collective efforts, we continue to improve and are getting better at doing what we do best - “saving and enriching lives.” This is also visible through the tremendous energy that has been generated through our organ donation initiative which is building real energy and excitement in our organisation.

On the clinical side, our doctors and nurses are doing a splendid job and are helping patients deal with the scourge of vector-borne diseases. At the same time, we are being extremely vigilant about issues like Infection Control and Antibiotic Resistance. We recently had a very engaging meeting at PANFORIC, the Fortis Infection Control Conclave, at Mohali. The outcomes were very satisfying and I look forward to many of the suggestions being implemented across our hospitals soon.

We continue to strengthen our teams and have added some of the top specialists to our already significant clinical base so that we can continue to be of service to our patients.

As I mentioned above, it has been a bit over a year since I returned to Fortis and with that said, I want to share a series of quick observations. Please feel free to stop reading at this point - although, I hope you don’t :-)

New Beginnings & Launches

Fortis collaborates with wayForward to launch emotional wellness programme to combat workplace stress

Fortis and wayForward, a digital, mental and emotional health company based in USA, have launched an app-based wellness programme in India. The programme uses techniques of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness to potentially help millions solve problems caused by stress, anxiety and other emotional or mental health issues. The unique “coach in your pocket” concept enables subscribers to access support from the comfort of their own homes.

Dr Samir Parikh, Director, Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare, said, “Mental and emotional health issues are more common than we imagine and impact almost every family, placing a significant burden on individuals and society. Clinical experience and research data show that stress is ruining relationships and hurting our overall health and wellbeing. I believe this programme would make a positive impact on the wellbeing of individuals, hence benefitting organisations and societies at large.”

Patient suffering from multiple organ failure and life threatening heart condition saved at Fortis Noida

Doctors at Fortis Hospital, Noida successfully conducted a challenging surgery on a 45-year-old patient from Aligarh suffering from a life-threating heart infection that had resulted in multiple organ dysfunctions. The surgery, led by Dr Vaibhav Mishra, Senior Consultant, Dept. of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, gave the patient another shot at life even though he had a survival chance of only 50%, according to the International Mortality Predictor.

The patient was brought to Fortis Noida after a suspected stroke, with

complaints of severe weakness and partial paralysis. Investigations revealed that an infection of the mitral valve (Infective Endocarditis) had caused the brain stroke. The disease led to the growth of mushroom like vegetation on the affected valve, parts of which broke off and clogged a vessel supplying blood to the brain. Surgery was the only option, but the condition had led to multiple complications, including blood infection (Septicaemia), kidney and lung dysfunction. The patient had to be put on dialysis and ventilator support. After the surgery, the patient was taken off life support, though he still requires dialysis.

The Transplant Teams at Fortis Mulund successfully conducted Western India’s first-ever Heart & Lung Transplant. This also marked Mumbai’s 25th Heart Transplant, 70th Kidney Transplant and 41st Liver Transplant. Following the brain death of a 37 year old male from Mumbai at the hospital, the kin of the deceased consented to donate his Heart, Lungs, Kidneys, Liver and Corneas.

A 48-year-old recipient from Mumbai received the donor Heart and Lungs. The patient was suffering from Congenital Ventricular Septal Defect with Eisenmengerization (pulmonary hypertension due to congenital heart defect) for the past three years. Dr Hasmukh Ravat, Senior Interventional Cardiologist & HOD Cardiology, had managed the recipient medically for over 3 years. The heart and bi-lateral lung transplant was led by Dr Anvay Mulay, Chief of Cardiac Transplant

Patient with football sized spinal protrusion operated upon at Fortis Memorial, Gurgaon

A team led by Dr Sandeep Vaishya, Director - Neurosurgery, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, provided succour to a 43-year-old patient who was carrying a fluid filled bulge measuring 92-cm, on his back. The swelling resembled a large football and contained over 7 litres of cerebrospinal fluid. It is reportedly the largest such swelling ever recorded in the world.

The patient was born with meningomyelocele, a congenital spine disorder. The condition leads to abnormal accumulation of spinal fluid and results in severely deformed lower limbs. Impairment of nervous function in lower limbs (paraplegia) is also observed. In this case, the patient had difficulty in controlling his bladder and bowel movements, which worsened over the years. He also suffered from progressive loss of sensation below the waist.

24-yr-old escapes lethal clot, thanks to quick diagnosis and prompt treatment at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana

A 24-year-old man had a providential escape after determined efforts made by a team led by Dr Sandeep Chopra, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, bust a life threatening clot clogging the blood vessel between his heart and lungs. Excellent team effort and specialised ICU care put the patient back on his feet in just 10 days.

The patient had arrived at the Emergency with complaints of chest pain and breathlessness for two days. His blood pressure was almost negligible and his heart beat and breathing stopped within minutes of arrival. A very quick clinical analysis indicated the presence of a large clot that was choking blood flow. A team of senior doctors including Dr Sandeep Chopra, Dr Vinay Singhal, Dr Amit Gupta, Dr Sheetal Garg and Dr V. K. Sharma immediately began administering CPR, lasting for an hour. Meanwhile, a special tube was inserted near his heart and a clot busting injection was infused to break the clot and re-establish blood circulation, saving the patient.

Complex life-saving surgery helps treat rare congenital heart defect at Fortis Escorts, Faridabad

A 23-year-old patient suffering from Ebstein’s Anomaly, a rare congenital heart defect, was successfully operated upon by a team led by Dr Neerav Bansal, Senior Consultant & HOD and Dr Biju S. Pillai, Senior Consultant - Department of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.

The congenital condition leads to improper development of one of the heart valves causing it to leak. The leaking valve further results in improper development of one of the pumping chambers of the heart. In this case, the patient’s heart had grown three times the normal size as the symptoms had been ignored for years. Patients brought in at this stage usually do not survive and it requires a high level of clinical acumen to treat the condition. The patient underwent the rare “one and half ventricle repair with valve replacement” procedure.
