About UsAt Earth Divas, fair trade is fundamental toeverything we do. It is the basis of our businessand our primary purpose for doing business. Ouroverall goal is to keep our expenses as low as wecan, produce as many items as we can, and returnall profits to the artisans that make our items. The more items we produce, the more families weemploy in Nepal and India.

Today, we work with just a few artisan groups, some of whom then work with other smaller groups. Each group has a specialty such as high-end hemp handbags, less expensive hemp items such as wallets and coin purses, crocheted hemp items, and felted wool items.

Founded in 2004 as an S-Corp, Earth Divas carries$2 million of product liability insurance withTravelers Insurance, and has single-price-point UPC codes for all items. All back office operations are managed by RML (RMLSite.com) in Millersburg, PA.

What is Fair trade?Fair trade is a system that not only aims to pay fair wages, but also support participatory workplaces, ensure environmental sustainability, supply financial and technical support, respect cultural identity, offer public ac-countability, and educate consumers about the choices that they can make in their regular shopping habits. Fair trade businesses foster long-term and direct relationships with producers in the developing world, because they know these connections are a highly effective way to help producers help themselves. Fair trade is not about charity; it uses a fair system of exchange to empower producers and to create sustainable development.

the artisansEarth Divas was founded with one primary goal: to employ as many people as we can and pay them as much as possible. It was important for us to work directly with the artisans that make the items, and not a middleman with a nice website. It was also important to us that we pay the artisans directly in cash when we can, and visit their place of work at least a couple times of year. From the beginning, we paid the artisans an extra 30% above the local wage rate. At the end of each year, we pay all profits to the artisans directly in the form of a cash payment. In 2007, we paid $5,000 to the artisans. Our great hope is that we will be profitable every year and able to reward the artisans for years to come.
