Technology and Me
A personal timeline of educational technology

Overviewo My name is Sam Youngo I started school in 1961 in Galveston, Texaso I graduated from Galveston Ball High in 1974o I earned my engineering degree from Texas
A&M in 1978 and my MBA from UTSA in 2004. I worked as an engineer for 32-years
o When I finish my teaching certification, I hope to teach secondary level mathematics

My definition of educational technology
Known as e-learning, instructional technology, and learning technology: it is the knowledge and application of tools, systems, and techniques to deliver learning materials, facilitate communication, and provide assessment and feedback, to facilitate student learning, and improve student performance

Kindergarten technology
o There were no computers in the class, instruction was on the blackboard
o Expensive desktop calculators and computers were in industry
o School copy machines were mimeograph machines
In the early 1960s
![Page 6: Young Timeline](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022061202/547c991ab37959932b8b5158/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
High school technology
o Students learned complex math calculations with the slide ruler
o Computer usage in math class was with a dial-up modem to a remote mainframe
o There were no cell phones – we used the rotary phone
In the early 1970s
![Page 7: Young Timeline](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022061202/547c991ab37959932b8b5158/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
College technology
o Calculators became available to the student – Texas Instrument’s SR50 cost $170 in 1975
o Engineers learned Fortran on the IBM 360 mainframe to perform math calculations
o Personal mobile communication was typically with CB radio
In the late 1970s
![Page 8: Young Timeline](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022061202/547c991ab37959932b8b5158/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
A vivid technology learning experience
o Comic book character influenced mobile communication technology
o Space program race with Soviet Union yielded many technological advances
o The information age has shrunk the world and changed teaching
![Page 9: Young Timeline](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022061202/547c991ab37959932b8b5158/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
A technology I want to use in my classroom
o With ample classroom computers, I want to use the internet and ePALs to connect the Hawaii classroom with students around the world
![Page 10: Young Timeline](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022061202/547c991ab37959932b8b5158/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
My vision of the classroom of the future
A classroom moving to the beautiful outside Hawaiian environment where students learn competition, cooperation, and collaboration through real-world problems in their local and global communities

A challenge for teaching
o Lack of educational funds for technology
o Parental disapproval of new-age technology driven holistic education
o Teacher understanding of new technology

Words of wisdom"The best computer is a man, and it's the only one that can be mass-produced by unskilled labor." (Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun)
