ous to them? Not one who loves him. Not one who has gained power in his name.

Your beauty is covered, dimmed, and blemished; your potential muted and stalled; your voice choked and weak - whenever we sever and cut – whenever we suggest that those others are outside salvation. The road is varied and often long. Judgment is fool-ishness and it makes us very ugly. There is too much ugliness in the world because the beautiful choose to be ugly. How strange? Having every-

thing in Christ we would choose less. Allow this to pass you over, allow your cup to overflow, be joyful, radiant, and powerful in the love of God that leads you to perfection. Never choose an-ger, let it go… Never choose anything that makes you less.

God created you to shine. Be the sun to those fortunate enough to know you!

Your Servant, in our Blessed Lord,

Fr Michael

Truth is bigger than our grasp of it. This is hard for us. We tend to get to a point and hold onto it. We rarely remain open to the thoughts of others once this has been achieved. We find a nice comfortable spot and try to maintain it and stay right there. This is not, however natural for us, what Jesus calls us to.

The round world provides many pathways to the same place. It is so to God. We are called not to judge but to tolerate in love those who are on a dif-ferent part of their journeys in faith. Intolerance is a sign, therefore, of both arro-gance and ignorance. One cannot possibly know all Truth on this earth. We re-main open to the fact that as human beings we see as through a mirror dimly and, then, we look at our brothers and sisters knowing that the

truth becomes more known to us by encountering Christ in one another.

The people we see, the ones who sit next to us, strangers, enemies… All of these people in encoun-tering them we must remember that we encounter Him. The reverse too. Our prayer, may it ever be, “Lord, let them see you in me and may I always see

you in them.” This prayer will bring much healing. One cannot pray this and be narcissistic. One cannot pray this and then be a user of people at the same time. Who could see Christ in others and be venom-

St. Benedict Parish

Sharing the Gospel The disciples started to feel proud because they thought they were the "in" group of friends of Jesus. One day they saw a complete stranger working powerful miracles in the name of Je-sus. The disciples told the stranger to stop because he was not part of their special group. The disciples should have encouraged him instead. Prayer Dear God, help me to work side-by-side with other peo-ple who love Jesus, no matter who they are.

St. Benedict’s Ladder of Humility—Week 11 of 12

Step 11: DISCRETION If you must speak, do so gently, humbly, earnestly, and quietly, with few and sensible words; for it is

written: “The wise person is known by the fewness of their words.”

Fear of God

Self-Denial

Obedience

Perseverance

Repentance

Serenity

Self-abasement

Prudence

Silence

Speak Calmly and Modestly As the tongue is difficult to control and lends us over to quick decisions, so we must train the heart and the tongue to speak modestly, without laughter, gently, lovingly, endearingly, and forever to be con-scious of our divine destination. A wise man is known by his few words says St Benedict. There was a Desert Father, if I recall correctly, to whom a certain bishop was coming and one monk asked him if he was not going to say something to the bishop for spiritual advice, but the Desert Father replied that if he could not teach the bishop by his own si-lence and contemplation that there would be nothing for him to teach the bishop with words and by speaking. This then is the model life of becoming a living word, like the Word, shining forth through example and speaking very little so as to embrace God and to show others the extent and depth to which God can occupy our minds and hearts. Desire more solitude and quietness so that you might em-brace God more readily and more fully. Homework: The next time someone annoys you, don’t tell anyone.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events. Please check the bulletin articles each week leading up to the events for additional information.

Faith Formation classes and Youth Groups have be-gun! October 7th is our first whole community gathering. We will meet at the same time, but in the church.

• K-8 (Faith Formation Classes & MS Youth Group)—10:15am—11:15am in various classrooms at St. Mary’s School or 10:45am—11:45am at St. Bridget’s Church Hall

• 9-12 (HS Youth Group)—6pm—7:30pm at SM

Yellow House

If you have not already registered for Faith Formation and wish to do so, please contact Nick at [email protected] or (585) 394-1220, ext. 37.

St James warns in today’s second reading that those who hoard their wealth and live only for themselves will be condemned. But in the Gospel, Jesus assures us that all who give of themselves for His sake will be rewarded.

Fall Retreat at Mount Saviour On Saturday, October 6 we invite parishioners to join us for a day re-treat at Mount Saviour Monastery out-side Elmira, NY. Because of the facili-ty, we are limited to thirty partici-pants. We will carpool and travel to arrive at 10:00 a.m. During the day, we will be able to join the monastery community for prayer at 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. In the course of the day, we will have two presentations by mem-bers of the Benedictine community, along with a shared community lunch. We will depart for home at 3:30 p.m. To reserve a place, contact Deacon Claude.

St Vincent de Paul - Ice Cream Social

The monthly St Vincent de Paul Society Meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd at 1:30 pm in Dougherty Hall. It will feature an Ice Cream Social for all in attendance. We welcome all to attend and consider joining as a new member of this supportive St Benedict community. We are dedicating this year, 2018-2019, to Our lady of the Immaculate Concep-tion, our patroness. There will be a brief meeting to

highlight the upcoming Fall and Winter plans for our parish. Members of the St Vincent de Paul Society will be asked to stand and be recognized, at all masses, this weekend, the feast day of St Vincent de Paul.

Family Promise of Ontario Thank you for your part! We raised more than $15,000 at the 2nd annual Bed Race. What a day it was! The sun was shining on the 13 beds that raced down The Canandaigua City Pier, accompa-nied by hundreds of supporters who were cheering them on. It truly was a day to celebrate the congregations, community organizations, and businesses that came together to support homeless children and their families.
