neighborhoods of exotic sights, sounds and

San Francisco the distinction as America’s

For those who have visited San Francisco…or who have dreamed of doing so…iconic landmarks stand out as places of interest to see and explore. Alcatraz, Chinatown, Nob Hill, Union Square, Lombard Street and North Beach hint at the many different facets of a city that has captured the imagination of poets and artists and attracted immigrants and fortune seekers since its beginnings during the Gold Rush days.

But, it was San Francisco’s most famous landmark—the Golden Gate Bridge spanning the Bay and linking the city to California’s northern coastal counties—that inspired this year’s convention theme—Your Bridge to Success. Just as this beautiful, majestic span serves as a vital commercial and transportation artery for San Francisco, so will MCAA 2010 provide us with a vital connection to top-tier educational, networking and business building opportunities.

This year, our industry is faced with steep business and economic challenges, making our pursuit of excellence in all forms tougher, and more critical than ever. We will begin our journey to personal and professional success with major session speakers who will inform and inspire us with their views of the world, recent events which they influenced and lessons about how their personal courage and fierce determination to overcome

seemingly insurmountable odds helped them achieve greatness. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, our Opening Session speaker, will offer important insights into the Middle East conflicts and other tension-ridden areas of the world, with particular focus on how those events are affecting, and will continue to affect, our lives. San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Singletary, the featured speaker for our Annual Awards Breakfast, will tell us how his dogged determination to be the best helped him climb to the pinnacle of professional football. U.S. Airways Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger will tell us how he faced “the unthinkable” head on when he landed Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River in January. And, Los Angeles Times Columnist Steve Lopez, our speaker for the Spouse Breakfast, will share his very personal story about Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless, Julliard-trained musician who became his friend and the inspiration for his best-selling, non-fiction book and related movie, The Soloist.

the Honorable Condoleezza ricePerhaps it was growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, during the civil rights movement that gave her the toughness and diplomatic instincts to be a force in U.S. foreign policy under two presidents or the intellectual discipline instilled by her educator parents that fueled her remarkable academic career, but whatever the reasons or influences, the Honorable Condoleezza Rice stands out as one of the most accomplished women in recent American history. She was the first female National Security Advisor, and is only the second woman and first African American woman to hold the office of Secretary of State of the U.S.

Even as a child, Rice’s accomplishments were remarkable. At three, she could read music before she could read, and was encouraged to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Her destiny took another path, however. She skipped the first and seventh grades and entered the University of Denver at 15. She holds three degrees, including a doctorate in political science from the University of Denver. She earned her Master’s degree at Notre Dame University in just one year. She was a professor of political science at Stanford University (1981–1999) and was also the university provost (1993–1999), responsible for overseeing the school’s budget and academic programs.

Rice put her academic career on hold when she was appointed to President George H.W. Bush’s National Security Council in 1989. And, when George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, Rice served as his chief foreign policy advisor. She became the second President Bush’s National Security Advisor during his first term, and in 2005, was nominated and confirmed Secretary of State, succeeding Colin Powell.

In March 2009, Rice returned to Stanford University’s Hoover Institution to resume her academic and teaching pursuits, as well write two books -- a book on foreign policy and a book on her parents.

January 15, 2009, started out just like most other days for U.S. Airways Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, and the flight he was piloting from New York’s La Guardia Airport to Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, showed all the signs of being just as routine. But then, fate took a turn.

Shortly after taking off, Captain Sullenberger reported to La Guardia Air Traffic Control (ATC) that the plane had been hit by a large flock of birds. He discussed with ATC officials the possibilities of returning to La Guardia or landing the plane at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, but decided that the plane could not reach either airport in time; the only option was to land in the Hudson River offshore from Manhattan. He directed crew and passengers to “brace for impact” and then guided the plane to a smooth, safe landing. All 155 passengers and crew survived, and Captain Sullenberger—described by friends and colleagues as shy, quiet and humble—became New York City’s and our nation’s latest hero. He and his crew were recognized and honored by the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives for their courage and teamwork, and they have been presented with medals and other honors by numerous national and local organizations.

In a “60 Minutes” interview a few weeks after the incident, Sullenberger told news anchor Katie Couric, “One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years, I’ve been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. And, on January 15, the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal.”

And, his credentials bear out that statement. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Sullenberger also holds a Master’s degree in industrial psychology from Purdue University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He has logged more than 40 years of flying experience, and since 2007, has run his own safety consulting business. In that capacity, he has participated in several accident investigations with the U.S. Air Force and the National Transportation Safety Board. He also has served as an instructor, safety chairman, accident investigator and technical committee member for the Airline Pilots Association.

Steve lopez, Los Angeles Times Columnist, authorThe Soloist: A Lost Dream, An unlikely Friendship and the redemptive Power of Music

In 2005, Los Angeles Times Columnist Steve Lopez heard about, and then later met, a homeless musician in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, Nathaniel Ayers. A promising violinist who had studied at the prestigious Julliard School in New York City, Ayers had to leave the program because of the ravages of a crippling mental illness.

Inspired by Ayers’ story and the unfortunate path that his life had taken, Lopez dedicated several columns to the musician’s struggle, moving his readers to help with donations of musical instruments. Lopez’s and Ayers’ initial tentative interactions eventually evolved into a close friendship that ultimately benefited them both. Lopez helped Ayers secure treatment for his schizophrenia and an apartment to get him off the streets. And, as he helped the homeless musician find a new life, Lopez rediscovered his own passion for journalism and writing. He recounted Ayers’ life and their unusual friendship in the non-fiction bestseller, The Soloist: A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship and the Redemptive Power of Music—which inspired the recently released movie, The Soloist starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr.

Lopez joined the staff of The Los Angeles Times in May 2001 after four years at Time Inc., where he wrote for Time, Sports Illustrated, Life and Entertainment Weekly. Prior to Time Inc., Lopez was a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Jose Mercury News and The Oakland Tribune. His work has won numerous national awards for column writing and magazine reporting.

Mike Singletary, head Coach, San Francisco 49ersWhen Mike Singletary was a child growing up in Houston, Texas, suffering from chronic respiratory and other illnesses, no one would have guessed that he would become one of the finest linebackers in football history, a pro football Hall-of-Famer and the head coach of an NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers. Some attribute his success to his deep Christian faith, while others point to his fierce determination to win, regardless of the odds against him.

The youngest of 10 children, Singletary’s early life was marked by constant bouts of colds, earaches, bronchitis and pneumonia. And then, when he started school, his devout Christian minister father forbade him from participating in school sports of any kind. In fact, Singletary’s football career did not begin until he was in junior high school, shortly after his father left the family. By the time he reached high school, he was delivering stunning performances that won him a full scholarship to Baylor University. At Baylor, he averaged 15 head-first tackles per game (and he broke 16 helmets in the process), earning him honors as the Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1979 and 1980 and he was named to the All-Southwest Conference Team of the 1970s and 1980s.

Singletary’s college football accomplishments won him national attention and serious looks from several NFL team scouts, and he went with the Chicago Bears in 1981, a second round draft pick. Determined to prove his abilities were better than “second round,” Singletary quickly became a starting middle linebacker in his first pro season, and by season’s end had been given all-rookie honors by United Press International and Football Digest. By 1983, Singletary was recognized as one of the finest defensive talents in the NFL. He retired from the Bears in 1992, ending a stunning career that hit its pinnacle in the 1985–86 season, when he helped the Bears advance to Super Bowl XX and win 46–10 over the New England Patriots.

Singletary did not return to football until 2003, when he became the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. The following year, the Ravens’ Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan went to the San Francisco 49ers as head coach, and Singletary went with him as assistant head coach and linebackers coach. After Nolan left the 49ers in the fall of 2008, Singletary was promoted to interim head coach; he moved up to head coach that December with a four-year, $10 million contract.

America’s most popular, enduring and successful rock-jazz band, Chicago, will be the centerpiece of our Wednesday evening gala at MCAA 2010. The band that brought us such supernova hits as Colour My World, Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?, Beginnings, 25 or 6 to 4, and Make Me Smile has sold over 120 million albums worldwide, 22 of which were Gold, 18 were Platinum and eight were Multi-Platinum. They have had five number one albums and have had 21 Top Ten hits. In a word, Chicago is legendary!

The band got its start in…not surprisingly…Chicago in 1967 when a group of DePaul University music students began playing late-night clubs on and off campus. The small group grew to seven highly versatile and talented players and went professional as a cover band, calling themselves The Big Thing. The band enjoyed some success, but eventually started evolving as it began working on and producing its own music. In June 1968, the band moved to Los Angeles, California, signed with Columbia Records and changed its name to Chicago Transit Authority. Its first release, which carried its new name, was a double album (very rare for a first release) that captured a lot of attention with its jazzy instrumentals, extended jams, Latin percussion and other experimental sounds. Now-famous songs on that first album were released as singles, soared to the top of the charts and are now considered Rock ‘n’ Roll staples.

Although most of the original band members have been replaced, Chicago still sounds as great as it did in the late ‘60s. The band continues to tour— in fact, Chicago is uniting with Earth, Wind & Fire for a second world tour with that group this year—and is still producing original music and albums.

California is acclaimed for its wines. To help you sort through the nuances of selecting and enjoying wine, several introductory classes will be presented. The classes include: n WINE BASICS: You will explore the attributes that are used to describe

wine—aroma, texture, acid, tannins, soils, terroir, and what it takes to bring all these things together to make great wine.

n BuBBLES FROM AROuND THE WORLD: Champagne is world famous, and who doesn’t like Champagne? But there are other regions on the planet that make great sparkling wine as well. This class will discuss sparkling wines from white to rosé, and from dry to sweet.

n FOOD FOR THOuGHT: Certain foods will affect certain wines in different ways. In this class you will discover the secrets to pairing wines with foods. By knowing how a wine is affected by different flavors, (i.e. sweet, salty, spicy, or citrus) you can better determine what wine to serve with each dish.

n CENTRAL COAST WINES: Most people, when asked about California Wine, will think “Napa” or “Sonoma”, but there are many wine-growing regions, one of the best, and one that equals Napa and Sonoma in quality, is the Central Coast. This class will introduce you to the wines of one of the world’s most dynamic and beautiful wine regions-and the setting for the award-winning movie Sideways.

Christina Strawbridge, owner of Christina S, a women’s boutique in Benicia, California, will present a Spring Style Show featuring the latest fashion trends from around the world. The featured designer, Joseph Ribkoff from Montreal, Canada, is also the exclusive designer for Miss America 2009. In addition to u.S.-based designers, you will see collections from Australia and France. up and coming designers who have recently graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (currently seen on the latest season of “Project Runway”) will showcase their exciting lines of California chic.

Christina Strawbridge, a fashion industry specialist, is also the senior vice president of the Northern California MCA. Her beginnings as a “fashionista” go back to when she was a little girl designing for and dressing her dolls. And, the influence of her mother and grandmother running their shop also influenced Chris’s interest in fashion. She has worked as a buyer, manager, two-time store owner, event coordinator, fashion show producer, stylist, lecturer, field representative for FIDM and writer. She has lived in Benicia for 23 years, and during that time helped start many of the successful events staged in the downtown area, including the popular Farmers Market, Wedding Showcase and Waterfront Festival.

As you consider your itinerary, plan to visit San Francisco’s “must see” attractions. There’s something for everyone, even those who are frequent visitors. So, to acquaint you with the places and sights that have made this city world famous, here’s a list of our favorites.


#1—golden gate BridgeWhether you’ve seen the bridge on a previous trip, or have yet to experience its glorious glow, the world’s most famous bridge will impress you. The 1.7 mile span was built in 1937, and at the time, was the longest bridge in the world. Approximately 120,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day, and a pedestrian walkway permits slower, more leisurely crossings. Be sure to bring your camera—the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most photographed things on Earth.

#2—Cable CarsThere’s more than one way to hike up San Francisco’s hills! Since the late 19th century, the city’s famous “little cable cars…that climb halfway to the stars” have been a favorite way for residents and visitors to get around the city. The cars run on tracks, moved by underground cable, along three routes. You can purchase the $5 tickets at the turnarounds at the ends of the routes. So, grab a railing and hold on for the ride of your life and some of the most spectacular views of the city from any standpoint.

#3—alcatrazThe name of the notorious former prison still generates chills. Located on an island with the same name in the middle of San Francisco Bay, the prison held some of America’s most famous criminals—Al Capone, George

“Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud. Although several tried, no prisoner ever escaped from “the Rock.” Alcatraz was closed in the 1960s. Recorded cell house tours are available for visitors to learn about the prison’s history and famous residents as they explore its buildings and grounds. Reach Alcatraz by ferry from Pier 33; reservations are recommended.

#4—lombard StreetA visit to San Francisco must include a ride or a walk down Lombard Street, the crookedest street in America. Located in the Russian Hill section of the city, the famous narrow, switchback street was built on an extremely steep hill to help residents reach the bottom safely. The street is lined by beautiful flowers and the most stately and opulent mansions, condos and townhouses in the Bay area. If you choose to take on Lombard Street in a car, you must start from the top because it’s one way, all the way. Before you start your ride, take a minute to gaze down Hyde Street at the crest of Lombard for a wonderful view (and photo op) of Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and the rest of the Bay area.

#5—ChinatownIf you enjoy Asian culture and cuisine, then a visit to San Francisco’s Chinatown should be on your list. Home to the largest Chinese community on the West Coast and the second largest in the United States next to New York City’s settlement, San Francisco’s eight-block-long Chinatown is a feast of exotic sights, sounds and aromas, just waiting for you to experience. Stroll through the beautiful, ornate Dragon’s Gate to enjoy 24 blocks of hustle and bustle, shopping in stylish shops, a visit to a temple or a small museum, or an authentic Chinese meal in any of its many restaurants. If you want to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating section of San Francisco, a guided walking tour is recommended.

#6—union SquareIf you are a serious shopper, this is the place for you! Major department stores and the world’s most exclusive designer boutiques are found along its streets—Post, Geary, Grant, Stockton and Powell. The Westfield San Francisco Centre is home to the largest Bloomingdale’s outside of New York City and the second largest Nordstrom in the U.S. Be prepared for an incredible shopping experience.

#7—north BeachSan Francisco’s Italian quarter is really not a beach at all, but rather a neighborhood of European-style sidewalk cafés, restaurants and shops. Be sure to visit the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and Coit Tower on top of Telegraph Hill for great views and photos of the bridges and the Bay. And, inside the Tower, floor-to-ceiling murals painted in the 1930s commemorate the early days of San Francisco.

additional hidden treasures:In addition to these traditional favorites, we also pulled together a list of suggested places to visit in San Francisco that we enjoyed during our previous visits. For those who are looking for a “hidden treasure” in the City by the Bay, try these out.

Ferry Building Farmers Market: Located about a mile from the Marriott on Market Street at the Embarcadero, this bountiful collection of fresh local produce, unique food specialties and handmade crafts offers a colorful, delicious way to spend a few hours. And, if your taste buds crave something more traditional for lunch, try a burger and fries at Taylor’s Automatic Refresher in the Ferry Building.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: An easy two-block walk from the Marriott, the museum houses works by Jackson Pollack, Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keefe, Paul Klee and Marcel Duchamp, among others. Be sure to see the rooftop sculpture garden, an incredible collection!

California Academy of Sciences— Largest LEED Platinum Building in the World: This new, extraordinary example of sustainable building and construction contains a natural history museum, aquarium, planetarium and a 2.5-acre living roof planted with poppies and strawberries. Three MCAA contractors helped design and install some of the building’s most innovative features—the radiant heating/cooling system, the controls and the mechanical system for the indoor rainforest garden.

Haight-Ashbury: If you grew up in the 1960s, this section of San Francisco was the mecca of the counter culture. It’s now a charming haven for eclectic boutiques, restaurants, nightclubs and bars.

Imagine this…it’s before dawn and the mist is rolling in from the Pacific, carried along by a brisk, cool breeze. You’re running or walking along a path that looks out over the gentle white caps of San Francisco Bay. As you round a corner, a lone, distant fog horn sounds, warning freighters and fishing boats about shallow waters, and, as the mist slowly clears, you spot sailboats of all sizes heading out to sea for a day of sailing.

Sound like a dream? Well, it’s not…it’s what you will experience during our Annual Fun Run/Walk during MCAA 2010 in San Francisco. We’ve chosen the Embarcadero Marina area for this year’s event, a short bus ride from the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. As in past years, transportation and a continental breakfast will be provided. And, be sure to bring a sweater or jacket to keep you warm.

the presidio golf Course

The 113-year-old Presidio Golf Course, previously available only to military personnel and members of a small, private club, opened for public play and was designated a national park in 1995, becoming one of America’s top public courses and one of its most challenging. Located just 10 minutes from downtown San Francisco, the Presidio offers a challenging 6,500-acre course lined by century-old eucalyptus trees and Monterey Pines. Its tight fairways and strategically placed bunkers are well-known features of this ”hilly“ course, offering a unique challenge for golfers of all abilities. Originally designed by Robert Wood Johnstone, the course was expanded in 1910 by Johnstone in collaboration with William McEwan and redesigned and lengthened in by the British firm of Fowler & Simpson in 1921.

If you choose to play the Presidio, you will follow in the footsteps of such historical figures as Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower, crooner Bing Crosby and golfing great Arnold Palmer. Imagine dropping those names during your next game at home!

harding park golf Course

Harding Park, always a public course, was officially opened on July 18, 1925, and its current layout follows the original routing designed by architect Willie Watson. Its predominant features include the towering Monterey Cypress trees and nearby Lake Merced. Harding’s strategy and character have been substantially enhanced with the inclusion of several carefully placed bunkers and re-contoured green complexes. The addition of multiple teeing surfaces provides the flexibility to offer distinct playing characteristics that will challenge every golfer, from beginner to the most skilled player.

And, adding to the prestige of this historic course is its selection as the site of the 2009 President’s Cup, a week-long tournament that took place in early October. Can you resist playing a course that hosted the likes of Fred Couples and Greg Norman?
