Your Child in Year 9 ‘I’ve been making a list of the things they don’t teach you at school. They don’t teach you to love somebody. They don’t teach you how to be famous. They don’t teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don’t teach you how to walk away from someone you don’t love any longer. They don’t teach you how to know what’s going on in someone else’s mind. They don’t teach you what to say to someone who’s dying. They don’t teach you anything worth knowing’ Neil Gaiman, The Sandman The Kindly Ones, Vol. 9

Cold Calling

• This year as part of the Teaching and Learning programme, we have adopted a questioning technique called ‘Cold Calling.’

• This technique is based on the Educational Psychologist Barak Rosenshine’s ‘Principles of Instruction.’

• It ensures that all students are included in teacher-student dialogue. No student is able to dominate and no student will be overlooked.

• Staff will ask questions and then select students to answer based on their knowledge of the class.

• Staff will no longer ask for volunteers to answer questions, a ‘No hands up policy.’

• If a student does not know the answer to a question, the question will pass to another student for the correct answer. Staff will then return to the original student, providing them with another opportunity to answer.

• This technique is used in a range of schools and is based on both cognitive science, and the common classroom practices of teachers whose students show the highest gains.
