Prior authorization required for opioidsNew requirement for opioid medication prescriptions

OPIOIDS ARE DRUGS that act on the nervous system to relieve pain. Continued use and abuse can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Effective July 1, the State of Maryland and every managed care organization (MCO), including University of Maryland Health Partners (UMHP), will require prior authorization (PA) for certain opioid prescriptions. This means that your doctor may be required

to provide information about the purpose of the medication, the dose or the quantity. Once your doctor provides the information, a decision is made within 24 hours.

If you cannot wait for the decision, a three-day emergency fill is available but will use the initial prescription and the doctor will need to provide a new prescription for more medication.

If the PA request is denied, a denial letter will be mailed to you. You or your provider can appeal the denial by using the process outlined in the denial letter.

Keep your blood pressure below 140/90. If you have a history of high blood pressure, stay healthy by taking your medications as prescribed. Talk to your doctor about a 90-day supply to avoid running out.

HPV shots for preteens What if you could help your child avoid cancer someday? The HPV vaccine lets you do that.

It helps protect against certain types of HPV. They cause many types of cancer, such as those of the cervix, mouth, throat and penis.

The HPV vaccine works best when kids get the shots long before they start having sex. Doctors recommend the HPV vaccine for both girls and boys at ages 11 to 12.

Take steps to understand your health! Choose a provider that meets

your cultural needs. Use our online directory to search for a provider by language and/or gender.

If your provider does not speak your language, it’s OK to ask for a translator. Translation services are offered free of charge.

Ask questions during your appointment:

■What is my main health issue? ■What do I need to do? ■Are there any treatment alternatives? ■Are there any side effects? ■How will this help me?

Ask someone to go to your appointment with you. They can help you understand and remember answers to your questions.

Make an asthma action plan

ASTHMA HAS a variety of symptoms: coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath. But there’s one thing it shouldn’t make you feel: powerless.

In fact, there’s a lot you can do to keep asthma symptoms from flaring up in the first place. Your physician can work with you to develop a plan that will help keep your asthma under control so you can live a healthy, active life.

Find your triggersThese are irritants and allergens that cause your asthma symptoms. Triggers vary from person to person but may include dust, animal dander, tobacco smoke, mold, pollen, polluted air and chemicals from products such as hair spray.

Take your medicationsFaithfully take the medicines that help prevent and control your asthma symptoms. Most people with asthma use both long-term and fast-relief medicines.

Long-term medicines help keep the airways open and can prevent asthma symptoms from flaring up. They should be used daily as advised by your doctor. TIP: Ask your doctor for a 90-day prescription.

Fast-relief medicines help control asthma symptoms when they occur. You should carry a quick-relief inhaler throughout the day.

Prepare for emergenciesYou need to know what to do if you have a serious asthma attack.

You should call your doctor if your medicines don’t provide relief.

You should call 911 if:■You have trouble

walking or talkingbecause you’re out ofbreath.

■Your lips or fingernailsare blue.Your doctor can give

you more advice on asthma emergencies.

Check with the expertsSee your doctor regularly to make sure your asthma plan is working well, and be sure to follow up with your doctor within two weeks of having an asthma emergency.
