Donna Powers: Hello, and welcome to today's class, Your Family's Homeopathic Medicine Cabinet. Today, I'm going to be introducing you to some basic principles, philosophy of homeopathy and how you can start to use some homeopathic remedies at home, quite safely, and you can start to build up your kit. This will be for acute illnesses only, and an acute illness is simply an illness, whether it's an infectious illness like chicken pox, measles, mumps, where it has a beginning, a middle and an end. When it's acute like this, you are able to use homeopathic remedies quite safely at home.

DP: In today's presentation, I'm going to go through the main principles of homeopathic prescribing, where homeopathy began and the fact that it is still being used today, and used by lay people and professional homeopaths, speaks to the durability and success of it. I will go through some different conditions that you could use homeopathy for when you're at home, and I've setup today's talk so that we're moving through birth, pregnancy, birth, childhood and giving you some tips, so that you can feel comfortable using homeopathic remedies to prescribe.

DP: Briefly, here's an introduction to homeopathic philosophy. Homeopathy is based on four main principles, one is the law of similars. And that simply means that the symptom picture of a person and the symptom picture of a remedy are the same. The common symptoms of the disease, and characteristic symptoms of the patient, and remedy needed. So, always is a matching going on. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was a medical doctor in his day, 200, 250 years ago. And he was very dissatisfied with what was going on with medicine in his day. He actually left medicine because he felt he was doing more harm than helping.

DP: One of the skills that he had was the ability to translate medical text in some of the herbal documents and books of his day, and he came across a principle that Cinchona bark, or China officinalis was a good malaria remedy because it was a bitter herb and he knew that this just wasn't scientific at all. So whatever possessed him, he decided to take China officinalis, Cinchona bark, or Jesuit's bark was the common name. And it was known herbally to be a cure for malaria. Whatever possessed Hahnemann, he decided that he was going to take that herbal tincture. He took enough of it that he developed malaria-like symptoms, and this is where he proposed his first law of homeopathy with what a substance can create, it can cure, that this is the law of similars.

DP: In taking the China, or Jesuit's bark, he developed sweats, excess urine, diarrhea, stomach pains, all symptoms that resembled malaria. When he stopped the herbal tincture, all the symptoms went away. And he said, "This is why Jesuit bark, or China, or Cinchona works is simply because it can create the symptoms that it cures, so it can cure the symptoms that it creates." So always with homeopathy, this is the most

significant principle that we are working with at all times, and that you will be working with with your own family. You're going to be, as it were, matching symptom pictures of a person and symptom pictures of the remedy. Symptom picture of the person with the illness, to the symptom picture of the remedy and the symptoms it can create when given in a sufficient quantity.

DP: Always, you're going to be looking at as well, generals and particulars. Generals are general symptoms, usually the child or the adult will say, "I feel", or "I am." Or if it's a non-verbal, or pre-verbal, baby, for instance, even animals. And now you can use homeopathy for plants quite successfully and they're not going to talk or tell you. But you can look and see generally if they feel better outside in the open air, even if it's counterintuitive if you have a baby. But you'll just see... Or they're better generally overall by rocking. Particulars, you will hear a person say, "My feet, my head... " With a pre-verbal child, you won't... They just can't talk and tell you where it hurts, but you may see them do things like tug at their ears and you know that that part is their ear that's feeling painful. If they feel general, overall, by being warm, and the ear feels better with warmth, you know that the generals and the particulars match. And you're likely to have a better match with the remedy that is needed.

DP: The other principle that Hahnemann developed was a single remedy, and that it could be individualized. This is an important concept as well. Now, sometimes in an acute infectious illness, you may need to change remedies from time to time. A good example of this would be in Croup. Croup is a kind of cough. It can come on extremely suddenly, in the middle of the night, and the cough will be very, very tight and there may be a lot of fear. Aconite would be your first remedy. As the cough loosens, you can switch to Spongia. And when the cough is quite a bit looser, and the symptoms of Hepar sulph are there, then you can switch to that one. So you can see the different stages of an infectious illness. And sometimes an individual remedy will be required at different stages. But only one remedy at a time. The third principle is a minimum dose. What is the smallest amount needed to help support the body's own vitality, its own immune system. Hahnemann called it, "the vital force"; the smallest amount of homeopathic remedy needed to support the body to heal itself.

DP: An example of a minimum dose might be, you figured out a very good remedy for your child, or an adult in your life, and they sleep, or they have a discharge of some sort, and their eyes. Often moms will tell you they can tell if their child is sick or if they're better by their eyes. And that, I've heard a lot of moms say, "My child had sick eyes for about three hours before he really got sick." So, the minimum does is just the idea of the smallest amount that's needed to help support the body to heal itself. The body is capable of healing itself, especially in an acute infectious illness, with a beginning, and a middle and an end.






DP: All a homeopathic remedy will do, is help support the vital force move through the whole process with the least amount of discomfort as possible, without suppressing any part of the process. Potent ties to remedies is the fourth principle of homeopathy. This is the pharmacy that homeopathic remedies go through. When Hahnemann was experimenting, he wanted to find what a substance could create in a healthy person, and the single remedy for it, that evolved out of that. And what would be the smallest amount. He also experimented with how dilute he could go. In his day, they were using excessive amounts of mercury to treat gonorrhoea and syphilis.

DP: The quote of the day was, "Salvation by salivation." Or, "Salivation is salvation." What it meant was is that there was enough mercury in the person's system, to create symptoms of mercury poisoning. But hey, no gonorrhoea or syphilis, that was gone. But in its place was mercury poisoning. If that sounds familiar to you in some ways, yes, that's still happening today. Mercury is still being used, and you will see mercury poisoning symptoms of excess saliva in some children, and sometimes in adults as well.

DP: As Hahnemann was experimenting with the most dilute he could be, he kept going to more dilute and more dilute. And then he found it was just too dilute, and there was no more action with the substance. For whatever reason, perhaps, his chemistry background, he decided that what he would do with the dilution was to shake it, which is also called "succussing", and that meant banging it on the palm of his hand. Or, tricherating it, grinding it. Diluting and grinding. Diluting or shaking. With the repeated dilutions and grinding, or shaking, what he discovered was that something was released from the substance was stored in the suspension of milk, sugar, or the alcohol itself. And this is what he determined, was actually, the curative action, was that this substance had somehow released something at an energy level.

DP: So, homeopathic remedies are energy. They are energy in a physical form, which is quite remarkable if you stopped to consider the implications of all of that. It took me quite a while after I learned about homeopathy. I remember reading it out loud to my husband and I said, "Well, this is really weird, because it's diluted, and that makes it stronger." And he said, "Well, that's not possible." And I said, "But actually yes, that's what happens." So it's diluted, and in the dilution, it's made more energetic and more potent. There's a resonance to the homeopathic remedies or the remedies or the substances that are made with a homeopathic, pharmaceutical process. So, in developing this pharmaceutical process, what became quite apparent was that these toxic substances like Mercury and Gold, gold was often used as well for gonorrhoea and syphilis. Hahnemann could now make these substances non-toxic, because they were so dilute.

DP: It also makes homeopathic remedies sustainable, simply because only a small part






of a material substance is needed for the dilution and grinding and shaking process. Hahnemann then went on to do what are called homeopathic provings. And he and his students would take a substance like China, like mercury, like gold, which is called Aurum in our homeopathic pharmacy; and they would give it in homeopathic dilution enough times that the person started to develop symptoms, much like Hahnemann did when he took the China or Cinchona or Jesuit Bark to have malaria-like symptoms produced within his system.

DP: So, all of the remedies that are gathered now are put into what we call a Materia Medica. Today, I'm going to be teaching you Materia Medica, and we have are called "key notes.” And you can very safely, and quite accurately prescribe, just on key notes of certain remedies. They're very well known remedies. They've been used for hundreds of years for very specific kinds of conditions. That's what you will be able to use. Dose. Again, minimum dose, the smallest amount that's needed. And how will you know to repeat? If a remedy has been helpful for a little bit, you can repeat. And potency, homeopathic remedies can be purchased in centesimal dosages which are diluted in that process of shaking or grinding 1 in 100 times, one part of a substance to 99 parts alcohol or milk sugar, then ground or shaken. They can also be diluted in DH or Xs, which are 1:10 times, one part substance to nine parts milk sugar or alcohol. There's an LM potency, which is a 1:50,000 dilution.

DP: Hahnemann started experimenting with these potencies very late in life, and it's only been since the 1950s when the sixth edition of the Organon, which is a book, a collection of the philosophy of homeopathy, was actually uncovered, revealed, and these were the potencies that he was working with towards the end of his career. What makes the LM potencies very important right now... Hahnemann was always striving to make sure that there was the least amount of aggravation for the patient. With the LM potencies today, we can use those with people who have been on medication or who are quite ill with the effects of toxins freshened by medical therapies or prescription medications. And it's a gentle way to support the body to heal itself.

DP: Storage of your remedies. You will start out, and it will be really nice. You'll have a little pouch. And maybe you've got one pouch for the children's backpacks and one for travel, one for the cottage. And then pretty soon, you'll fill up a drawer in the special area for your homeopathic remedies. And then, all of the sudden, you're scrounging and asking other people, "What do you use to store all of your remedies in?" That does happen and it happens fairly quickly as you start to get comfortable with your remedies. It's important to store them away from very strong smelling substances, especially essential oils, Tiger Balm, Vicks Vapour Rub, coffee. So, find a place that's away from those strong smells, diffusers. That's about it. A lot of electromagnetic radiation, so I wouldn't be storing my remedies near my computer or my laptop, or my cell phone.






Those might possibly antidote your remedies.

DP: You're always looking for remedy effect, sleep is good, and discharges are also very good. The toxins need to be able to discharge out of the body, so you might see an increase in perspiration, snot, poop, pee. Any of these will be a good indication that you're on the right track for the remedy. Some of the very best information out there on homeopathic philosophy that's free, the tutorials are at homeopathyplus.com.au. I believe this is a website that's managed by Fran Sheffield, a homeopath in Australia. The PowerPoint handout will have that link for you, so no worries about scrambling to write that out. A word about dosage in acute illnesses, the more precisely the remedy and your child's symptoms match, the higher the potency you can use. So, if... What would be a good remedy to use for an example?

DP: That may come to me in a little bit here. For your home kit, a 6CH, 12CH or a 30CH potency are all good ones to start with. As you learn more, you can go up to a 200CH potency. I would advise that it's best to take an acute care course at that point so that you're very comfortable with how to use your homeopathic remedies. For instance, Arnica often are accidents that we have are... They can be fairly mild. So you have a child who's learning to walk, a 30CH Arnica for any bumps, bruises or falls might be very, very helpful, but if you had somebody saying, "No, I'm fine, I'm okay", then you know that at a mental and emotional level, in an accident, they will probably do better with a 200CH potency. You're starting to get the mind symptoms involved in the higher potencies.

DP: As always, you use the minimum dose principle, so just simply the minimum needed to support the body's ability to heal itself. The more intense the acute sickness, the more you might need to repeat the dose. For example, in very high fevers, or where there's very intense physical symptoms that go with the fever; for instance, your child might say to you, "Am I going to die?" or "I see black dogs in the room", they're hallucinating, you might need to repeat the remedy every half hour to every one and a half hours before there's some lasting relief. You may need an aconite or a belladonna in a 200CH, especially if they're hallucinating or having fears about dying, otherwise if you've only got a 30CH to work with, you just might need to repeat it more often, maybe even every 15 minutes. How will you know whether to repeat? If your child's still doing well of if they've fallen asleep or the fever's broken, then you know you don't have to repeat it again right away. If you're repeating a remedy every half hour or an hour, for five or six times, either the remedy is incorrect or you need another potency if it's only holding for a little while.

DP: But in most cases, one dose every two to five hours will be sufficient. For children under two years, generally one granule is okay. Two years and older, you can give up to

two granules. If after one to three doses, there's marked relief, stop giving the remedy. If there's a relapse, repeat the remedy. If relief is noticeable, but slight, give two to three more doses, lengthening the time between the repeat doses as your child continues to improve. If there's no relief after three or four doses, the remedy most likely, is incorrect. Sometimes the symptom picture can change, especially after a fever breaks and another remedy might be needed.

DP: Once again, positive signs that a remedy is helping, the child or person falls asleep, they look better, no more sick eyes, more energy playing or more back to their old self. Discharges... If you have any discharges it means the body is eliminating and this is a good thing. A simple word about essential oils, I know how very important and helpful they are for many people, for many families, simply when you are using your homeopathic remedies for storage and when you're giving the remedy, avoid the use of camphor menthol, eucalyptus, mint and coffee, thieves oil, tiger balm. All strong aromas can counteract the effects of homeopathic treatment. How will you know? If you use a homeopathic remedy, your child is better, then you decide to use an essential oil, the symptoms return. Then you will know that you've had an antidote with an essential oil. So simply be careful when, or if you choose to use both and watch the symptom picture. If they're better and then there is a complete return, then you know there's been an antidoting effect with the essential oils. If you're using diffusers, just simply remind yourself to keep the homeopathic remedy away from the diffuser or away from the essential oil that you're using. You could possibly antidote the whole tube of remedy.

DP: I want to talk briefly... Have a word with you about fever and illnesses. Fever is an important process that all children need to have and adults, as well. Suppressing it with anti-fever medications, the other name for that is antipyretics, is really discouraged. NICE is the National institute for Health and Care Excellence in the UK. They have... There's a link in the PowerPoint presentation for you, and they have done a complete and thorough study about antipyretic agents or fever medications. They do not prevent febrile convulsions and should not be used specifically for this purpose. That's from their research in 2007. In fact, they don't even recommend kind of cool sponging for the treatment of fever, and recommend that children with fever should not be under dressed or over wrapped, and only use... They call it paracetamol or ibuprofen in the UK, who appear distressed.

DP: That's in 2013, they revised that and I'm not sure why they did, but using fever medications. Even in a vaccine situation there's a practice now of giving a child Tylenol prior to vaccines and after if there's a fever with the idea that they're going to prevent any possible febrile seizures. In fact, this is not true at all. What they do recommend is to not use these fever agents with the full aim of reducing body temperature in children with fever.






DP: Fever is the body's natural system that does two things. One, it creates an environment that is too warm for the virus and bacteria to reproduce and dump their toxins. When virus and bacteria dump their toxins into the blood, this is when the immune system actually kicks in. It's not the virus and bacteria that are kicking the immune system in, it's them dumping their toxins in there and the immune system is trying to keep up. When it can't keep up, this is when it will produce a fever and the fever will create this hot environment and the virus and bacteria can't reproduce anymore.

DP: The other function of the fever is to put in to action some events that would never happen in a normal body temperature. But when the body temperature is raised, these particular immune system functions are put in to action. So, when you give a child or an adult a fever medication, it suppresses that whole process and actually prolongs the illness and creates the possibility of secondary complications. So, please allow your child or your adult in your life in an acute illness to have their fever.

DP: We will be going through some homeopathic fever remedies. And the idea with the homeopathic remedy to help with fever is support this whole process without suppressing it like a fever medication would. There's actually medical research now. I've given you the link. It's published medical information of using aspirin or acetaminophen, and it's associated with the suppression of serum neutralizing antibody response. This is information that I learned from Dr. Tetyana Obukhanych. He runs a course online called "Natural Immunity Fundamentals.” That's also the name of her website, naturalimmunityfundamentals.com. And her work is excellent. She puts everything in a way that makes sense. This is an immunologist, and what I learned from her, an immunologist isn't somebody who studies the immune system, it's somebody who studies the immune system specifically as it is vaccine-related, so she has always been curious about what the natural immune system is all about, and it has led her to write her book, Vaccine Illusion and to promote her course. I love talking about her.

DP: Her bottom line is, fever suppression is bad for everyone regardless of where people are at with respect to their vaccine ideology. Her research is just fabulous. I would strongly recommend that course if you are going vaccine-free, and wanting to know how to treat acute infectious illnesses. It really compliments the course that I offer as well. The ibuprofen and the other anti-inflammatory drugs actually inhibit antibody production in human cells. Another link within the PowerPoint to show you the medical research for not using aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, acetaminophen for fever. Also with fever, it's important especially with preverbal or nonverbal children or even the elderly who cannot speak, perhaps there's dementia.

DP: You'll want to watch for signs of symptoms of dehydration. This is of concern with

fever. Always offer regular fluids. For breastfeeding children, feed breastmilk on demand. With babies, how you can detect signs of dehydration are by looking for the following features: That soft spot at the top of their head could possibly be sunken, dry mouth, the eyes get sunken, absence of tears. If there seems to be crying and no tears, you know you're facing a dehydration situation. Dry diapers, you want to have a certain number of wet diapers in a day.

DP: Also, if you are on your way to the hospital, I always tell in my course: Brain, blood, bones and breathing. These are emergency situations where western conventional medicine is highly recommended. This is what they do the best. If you know it's a situation of dehydration, you can also let your emergency doctor know that you have been monitoring their fluids and you suspect dehydration and could they please have an IV fluid. It's possibly your child might not need anything more than that. You'll want to know what the signs and symptoms are. If your child has a fever, of course, you keep them home. The other point I would like to bring out, and I've included the link to the article, Hillary Butler, if you find any articles by her, she's brilliant.

DP: She's a mom in the '80s, which I am as well, who took upon herself to do vaccine research and she quotes medical articles, published medical research all the time. And one of the examples she uses when talking about chicken pox is when the fever breaks, the system that's been set in place, one of these cascades of events that happen. When the fever breaks and your child or adult produces a sweat, the immune system actually produces and antibiotic-like substance that's put on the surface of the skin. This antibiotic on the skin will actually prevent any secondary complications, like staphylococcus or streptococcus on the surface of the skin.

DP: If your child breaks their fever, it's really important to not go bathe them right away. Leave that skin intact, and of course, wash the bed clothes, and the pyjamas that they're wearing, but keep the skin, that layer of its own antibiotic, on top of the skin. So for fevers and homeopathic remedies, belladonna will work for 75% of the children, 75% of the time when these symptoms agree. One of the telltale symptoms for fever in belladonna is the dilated pupil. So the black part of the eye expands. It almost covers the whole part of the coloured part of the eye. Even if you were to turn on the light in the bedroom, because your child has cried out, you've gone to see what's wrong, you will see that even with the light on, the pupil doesn't go back in to a pin prick, like a lens on a camera would. It stays wide open.

DP: So they're very, very sensitive to the light. The active ingredient in belladonna in a herbal form is atropine. Atropine is what the eye doctor will put in your eye so the pupil will dilate, and they can shine a light in it and see what's happening inside the eye. Belladonna fevers, the child or adult will be sensitive to light, noise and motion. These






fevers come on very suddenly. More often in the middle of the night. The high fever will be accompanied with a red face, the dilated pupils, and you will see pulsating, intense throbbing pain at the temples or the neck. The carotid arteries. This is very characteristic of belladonna. A lot of dryness. This will be the fever remedy where they might say something very odd to you like, "There's a black dog in the room."

DP: Or "I see monsters with red eyes." There will possibly be hallucinations. The fevers can get quite high quite suddenly. There's only two reasons, really, why a fever would go beyond a set point. Naturally, fevers can only go so high in a body. There's two circumstances where it will go beyond that. One is poisoning and the other is sun stroke. If it's a fever from sun stroke, you can give belladonna and you're on your way to the hospital. If it's poisoning, again, if it's very high, then you can get belladonna and you're on your way to the hospital as well. In a healthy immune system, the set point is there for fever. Where you're wanting to be watching for a febrile or a fever seizure is when the fever goes up very high very quickly.

DP: If the fever is going up slowly, it's unlikely that there will be a febrile seizure. Again, that NICE that I mentioned before, they go in to some information from their studies about febrile seizures. It would be extremely rare for any child to actually have a febrile seizure, and within that very small percentage of children who might have that, very few who would have long standing complications from a febrile seizure. They're awful to look at, but there's no brain damage in the majority of children who would have, or maybe have a febrile seizure. Aconite will be your other go to remedy in your home kit. Again, suddenness after chill or cold. We have a weather phenomenon here in Calgary called a chinook. The weather can change very suddenly from cold, cold, cold to very mild or it can go in the other direction. Sometimes these fevers will come on again in night and there will be a fear of death.

DP: Your child might even say to you something like, "Am I going to die?" They'll be dry, restless and thirsty. It's possible that these kinds of fevers might come on after a shock or intense fears of death. It's possible if you had a combination of things like a huge weather change and your child had been to the funeral, or you had just found out about the death of a loved one. If they came on with a fever in the middle of the night, you might consider going to aconite in the middle of the night. They'll be very anxious. And just a word, belladonna and aconite herbally are poisonous plants. If you were to have monkshood, which is what aconite is made from, in your garden, you'd want to take that out if you've got little ones, for the simple reason you wouldn't want them to eat those flowers. They're very poisonous, and the same with belladonna.

DP: But because of the homeopathic pharmaceutical process, these substances are made non-toxic. The other one is Ferrum phos. It's thought of often as the






homoeopath's aspirin. These will be slow onset. These are your viral illnesses where the children come home from school, they just don't seem very well, and they have a good night's sleep and you go, "Oh okay, I guess they're fine," send them to school, and next day, it's the same thing again. There's no clear symptoms with them. It's a low grade fever. They might possibly have a nosebleed or their iron might be low. A Ferrum phos is a remedy that is used sometimes for anemia. The picture on the PowerPoint is a tissue salt, and a tissue salt typically is around a 6X, so diluted six times in 100, or a 6D, so again, the 1:10, rather than the centesimal potency which is 1:100.

DP: Now we'll talk about accidents and injuries. So now you've got three remedies in your kit for fever: Belladonna, Aconite and Ferrum phos. The other remedies that you're going to use more frequently than anything else, Arnica is the remedy that many families have come to. This is their first experience with homeopathy, and it's often a good one. Moms who have just delivered babies and everything is swollen and bruised and sore, this is an indication for Arnica. For shock, Aconite, not just for fever. If you're in a car accident and it was sudden, and there's a tremendous amount of fear, give Aconite right away. And then if anyone is injured or if there's a lot of bleeding, swelling, bruising, or if the injury is serious, you can hear the person say, "I'm fine," then you'll know that that's a good indication for Arnica in that situation.

DP: Now, sprains, strains, eye injuries, broken bones. Here are some more remedies to add to your ever-growing home kit. Ruta, it's the one we often think of for twisted ankles, knees, or repetitive use of small muscles in the hands, think carpal tunnel, strained eye muscles from computer work or fine needlework or reading in poor lighting. Ruta has a special affinity for the tendons in the body. Ruta is from the citrus family. If you think of lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, one of the ways we prepare it is to use a juicer, and we squish it on top of that juicer, or we ream it out by twisting and turning it to get the juice out. This is the same action that Ruta has on these muscles that are twisted, so it's a good one to have on hand. Also, the idea of strained eye muscles from computer work. So many of us work closely with our computers all day. Remember Ruta, and that's simply because what holds the eyeball in place is a tendon.

DP: Symphytum, bone knit. This is to help heal broken bones once the bone has been set properly. The other use you will have for Symphytum if you have family members who play tennis, baseball, if there's a blow to the injury, to the bone around the eye socket, Symphytum will be very, very helpful. It will help reduce also the swelling and the blackness and yellowness that comes with the Symphytum. Ledum is also for eye injuries. It will be a remedy we talk about with tetanus or insect bites and stings, or if you're concerned about tetanus at all, Ledum and Hypericum. But for eye injuries, this will be given after Arnica when the swelling's reduced but the discolouration around the eye remains. One of the situations you might have that happen is if you've got a child






who's the baseball player but grad's coming up, they get an eye injury and they want to look decent before a grad, Arnica followed by Ledum will do some great work.

DP: The other remedy to think of, especially in lower potencies, similar to Ferrum phos, you can get the Calc phos and a tissue salt, and this will help heal the bone. Calcium phos or calcium phosphoricum, is a major constituent of the bones. Puncture wounds, here we are with the Ledum and Hypericum. I've written a newsletter on tetanus vaccine and the tetanus immunoglobulin that is sometimes given after... Or it's offered. Please read the newsletter, and you can find out what you can do to prevent tetanus, especially if you're a vaccine-free family, whether by choice or because you have to. You can't... Vaccines have been damaging in the past. The other lecture you can find on Arnica, Hypericum, and Ledum in first-aid injuries is by Kent. There's a wonderful organization called homeoint.org, and they have a number of books that you can read for free online, homeopathic philosophy and lectures. It's a great resource for you to have.

DP: So Ledum and Hypericum are used for tetanus protection or prevention. And there are Ledum, puncture wounds that are better for cold applications. Ledum can also be used for insect stings or bites where you're finding that the person wants cold on the puncture wound. Hypericum is for any wounds where nerves are involved. Crushed fingers and toes, spine, and the mouth for dental work. Whenever I've stubbed my toe and taken Hypericum, it's worked like miracle. It's taken the pain away. With small children, car door, drawers, toys it just seems to be that there's lot of opportunity for crushed fingers and toes.

DP: More accidents and injuries, burns. I would recommend Cantharis on hand for scalds, sunburn or second-degree burns with blisters or just before the blister forms. The pain typically is better for cold compresses. So, think of Cantharis as well, pot, cast iron frying pans. My son was cooking something on the stove, and he put the cast iron frying pan into the oven for it to finish cooking. He reached in after about five minutes, and of course, grabbed on the cast iron handle and burnt his hand terribly. He did go to the hospital, and we gave him Cantharis, and he healed very, very quickly. Cantharis will actually double duty as well if you have anyone in your family with a history of urinary tract infections. And its symptom, burning, pain before, during, and after urination, often a common symptom for urinary infections.

DP: More on accidents and injuries. Dental work, surgeries, anxiety anticipating an event. Here's your Aconite again. It will help calm those fears, especially if somebody wakes up in the middle of the night, and they're sure they're going to die from this latest dental work or surgery. Gelsemium is going to be an important remedy for you to have especially in flu season. Gelsemium, public speaking as well. The symptoms that would indicate Gelsemium is needed. Frequent trips to the bathroom, trembling weakness,

and fear of an ordeal, which would make it a terrific public speaking remedy. Simply think weakness, trembling and dread for Gelsemium. These will some of the symptoms you find in somebody needing Gelsemium for a flu as well.

DP: The other remedy I want to tell you about are for IV lines in surgery or rubber dams in dentistry. Staphysagria, it has an affinity for the teeth, but it's also helpful when needles are used or surgical cuts where there's possible feelings of humiliation, indignation or suppressed anger. And anytime an opening is stretched mechanically, think of Staphysagria. So, childbirth, where forceps are used, catheter for men or for women. I've used this remedy quite successfully actually for somebody who has had lingering effects from IVs, swelling at the entry point or fear or needles even.

DP: Post surgery, post dental work, ill effects of anaesthetic, I've found phosphorus to be incredibly helpful. It's possibly a remedy you're going to be using for children for coughs as well. If you simply Google or if you simply look on my website powersofhomeopathy.com, and put in the search box "Phosphorus," you'll be able to find a handout there linked to one of the flu newsletters. And it's a handy one, because it goes through the phosphorus fever remedies as well. But if you find somebody is craving ice-cold water after a surgery, remember how... You know how they give you that iced water, you come out of surgery, you take a sip of it. Well, in somebody needing phosphorus, what happens they'll drink the icy cold water, it hits the stomach, and right away they vomit it up. There can be a craving for ice creams or milkshakes. This will be another indication that you will need phosphorus after a surgery.

DP: Baby colic. What is baby colic? It is when a baby who is otherwise healthy cries for more than three hours per day, more than three days per week, for at least three weeks. And that is the definition of colic. 19th century colic advice would say, "Just put cotton in your ears and gin in your stomach." I never did that with my colicky first child, but there you go. Some might be driven to drink with it. It's estimated that up to 40% of all infants have colic, and it starts between the third and sixth week after birth, and ends by the time the baby's three to four months old. One of the best websites to go to for signs and symptoms of infectious illnesses or childhood complaints is kidshealth.org. They very much advocate vaccines. The information you'll find on there is extremely helpful.

DP: I swear my son got home from the hospital after day four and started with his colic. There was no wai t ing unt i l th ree weeks. now is colic. Some of you have learned that your baby likes to be held gently, rocked slowly, held upright with their tiny face snuggled in closely to your neck, and the window open with a slight cool breeze. Sometimes that means a slow walk outdoors in the evening where it's cool. These are all indications for the homeopathic remedy picture of Pulsatilla.

DP: And you will see that the general symptoms of Pulsatilla are always worse for becoming heated. The person in general, the complaint in particular, so whether it's a cough or an ear infection. These children are the ones who go to a birthday party and possibly eat too many hotdogs, too much ice cream, too much cake. All the things that you wouldn't normally let them eat at home, and they seem to be enjoying it and then they get home and they just have a terrible, terrible stomach ache. Pulsatilla babies, you will feel very sympathetic for them and their weeping affects you even though you're tired. Chamomilla child, on the other hand, will just put everybody on edge, and that's what we'll talk about next. The abdomen and stomach are bloated and the pains are unbearable and severe. They may have diarrhea with their colic and the stools are green, and may smell of rotten eggs. These are babies that scream with anger, very restless, and where Pulsatilla gets carried slowly and gently, Chamomilla children demand to be carried fast rather than slowly, and they absolutely cannot be comforted. They want things and then they reject things and they'll drive their parents crazy.

DP: Often, people come to Chamomilla during teething time. You will see the same kinds of diarrhea with the teething as you will with the colic. Colocynthis is another one you might not want to know about and Colocynthis actually would be useful for adults who end up with abdominal pains from anger, and what makes this one characteristic with colic or adult abdominal pain is that the pain is better for bending double or applying hard pressure to the area. You'll actually maybe see somebody trying to lean over a desk. Your child will improve when the knees are brought up to the abdomen. They're better for warmth, which remember Pulsatilla is not, and they'll be worse after eating or drinking, and there'll be a component of anger with that.

DP: The other one that I wanted you to know about, because even if you never use Colocynthis again or Dioscorea again, when you have four months of colic, you will really appreciate having these little remedies in your kit. They're not expensive, generally under 10 dollars to get a tube of homeopathic remedy. With Dioscorea, where Colocynthis is better for doubling over, Dioscorea is better for bending back and stretching out, and these are the babies who arch back like little bananas and scream with pain, and they want to be held upright. They might want to, when you go to hold them and cuddle them, they'll push their feet down and push themselves upright and their bellies will rumble a lot. I recently had a young mom and this is what her baby was doing, and she found that Colocynthis sort of helped but not really, Chamomilla helped






sort of but not really, and we went through the symptom picture and this is what was characteristic about her little baby, better for stretching out and wanted to stand up and move around.

DP: The other remedy that you might want to keep on hand and even in a tissue salt potency like the Ferrum phos and the Calc phos, it's called Magnesium Phosporica or Mag phos, or Magnesium phos. These are all names, you'll find these names are a little bit interchangeable on the labels of your remedies. This is occasional colic with very few other symptoms and the pains are better for warmth and for bending double, which might remind you of Colocynthis, they pull their legs up and better for heat, and these are the babies that might want to be carried around on their bellies. You will find Mag phos useful as well for ear infections that have those very same symptoms that they're better for pressure on the painful ear with something warm. Menstrual cramps, a number of women have been successful using Mag phos because again, with the cramps and the pain, they want to double up and put something warm on their bellies.

DP: Now, we are going to go through common complaints and illnesses. We have diarrhea. Another great website for tremendous number of resources is from Dana Ullman, it's homeopathic.com. You can use his search engine on his website and you can find all kinds of really good information on all kinds of conditions. With diarrhea, Ullman quotes a study that has been replicated and confirmed the value of homeopathic medicines to treat acute diarrhea in children, and it shows that there's a significant result using homeopathy in childhood diarrhea.

DP: One of the first ones that you can think of is Aloe succotrina or simply, Aloe. When people feel this insecurity in the rectum, is how it's described, Aloe may be what is needed. It's an involuntary stool and it's... Actually, if you have a child who has an involuntary stool that's even well-formed, not just diarrhea, Aloe is one of the go-to remedies for that. I've actually used it for my niece when she was little. She did not know she had passed a stool until there it was, and we used Aloe and it cleared up very, very quickly. There's a lot of gurgling and rumbling in the abdomen prior to the stool, and a lot of sputtering during the release. And it can be very mucousy and like jello. If you use... So, there's a picture of the Aloe plant and if you break off a leaf, you can see that it's very mucousy-like substance itself. Well this is what the stool can be like. Give that and you may avoid drastic situations.

DP: You can think of these remedies that are coming up in situations of Norwalk Virus... What are some of the other ones that happen? You can get a lot of this in day cares, nursing homes. I'm trying to think of the other one besides Norwalk Virus. I can't think of it, it's escaped me right now. The other one is Podophyllum. And again, acute diarrhea, again sudden urgency for stool. And what differentiates it from Aloe is the offensive-

smelling stools and both of them again, gurgling and rumbling in the abdomen. Generally, it's a painless stool but they may have cramping ahead of time. So you may have to learn how to differentiate your remedies and you'll get quite good at this.

DP: Arsenicum Album... This is a leading remedy for diarrhea caused by food poisoning. This is another must-have in your homeopathic remedy kit. I know parents have used it quite frequently when the child sitting on the toilet and it's coming out one end and out the other end. It's a very important influenza remedy as well. We're going to continue our PowerPoint presentation now, and if you head to slide 32, it will take you to Common Complaints and Illnesses, where we're going to cover vomiting and nausea. This is going to be something that you will encounter fairly frequently in a household. And often it seems like everybody's sick with vomiting and diarrhea just about the same time.

DP: One great book I can recommend for you is called Homeopathy for Children, by Gabrielle Pinto and Murray Feldman. Murray Feldman was my teacher where I trained at the Vancouver Homeopathic Academy in Canada. I graduated in 2001. It's a handy little book. Everything is broken down into common complaints, illnesses, that you might have while you are raising your kids at home. I love that is in point form and you can simply look up a topic like colic, and go to colic and see the remedies that are recommended. And then at the back of the book I believe, are the lists of the remedies with their key points for using them. Again, just a quick reminder that it's the remedy picture of the remedy that you are matching with the symptoms of the child who has a particular illness, a child or an adult.

DP: And so, homeopathic remedies you can have many, many uses for, as long as the symptom picture agrees. If you've got a remedy like Arsenicum Album for vomiting and nausea, you can also use Arsenicum for food poisoning, you can use Arsenicum for flu, you can use Arsenicum for possibly a sore throat. As long as the symptoms agree, you don't need the name of the disease or an illness to know that, "Ahh, Arsenicum. Yes, it's restlessness, it's fear of death, it's chilly with burning pains and they want hot blankets or a bean bag." Then you know that you are looking at an Arsenicum picture no matter what the disease is.

DP: So let's go on for the causes. But before we get into the remedies, let's just talk a little bit about the causes for vomiting and nausea. Sometimes it's contaminated food, or food poisoning. If you're travelling on a cruise, it could possibly be something like E. Coli or salmonella. If you've got your homeopathic remedy kit on hand, because you're not in port and everybody's coming down with vomiting and diarrhea, you'll be able to use your kit. Earaches, sometimes can have vomiting and nausea with them. Worms, quite possibly. The children tend to be itchier at night. You can see the pin worms come out at






night. Injury or concussion can cause vomiting and nausea. If it's involving the brain, you're on your way to the hospital, or broken bones. We're covering this information again just a little bit. This is how we finished part one. So I'll just briefly go through this.

DP: Whooping cough, sometimes at the end of whooping cough, you can get vomiting. Allergies to milk, you can have vomiting, nausea and/or diarrhea. Pregnancy, morning sickness can be very common for many women, and rather than take prescriptions, medication, Diclectin is the one that's most often prescribed here in Canada. You can use homeopathic remedies. Teething can sometimes be a time of vomiting and nausea. Illnesses like the flu often can have vomiting and nausea with them. Poisoning, once again, you're on your way to the emergency department, and hopefully, taking with you the substance that you suspect your child has ingested. The other common situation situation for vomiting and nausea is motion sickness, either by car, plane or boat. I get several enquiries about that, "What remedies should I take? We're gonna be travelling by boat in-between islands and I get really sick in boats.”

DP: So let's go through with the remedies right now. Aethusa. Now this is remedy that you may only use when your child is quite young or little bit older, but there is an intolerance of milk and they will vomit curdled masses. It's extreme vomiting. This is the projectile vomiting, and it makes a child weak and sleepy. If you've tried some of the other homeopathic remedies that are more common, we'll be going through them, and nothing is helping, you may want to think about Aethusa. It's possible you may need to see naturopath or homeopath and let them know, "Look, I've looked up this remedy. I really think this is what my child needs because this is the kind of vomiting that happens after breastfeeding or feeding formula."

DP: The next remedy that might possibly be of use, and of use further on in childhood, is called as the Antimonium Crudum, or Ant Crud for short, or Antimonium Crud. These are some other names that you might hear. When you look into the mouth of an infant or child who needs Antimonium Crud, you'll see that their tongue is thickly coated. It's a milky white colour, and they typically will vomit after eating and drinking. There's a loss of appetite and sometimes there's vomiting and nausea can come after over-eating or eating too many rich foods, which might make you think of Pulsatilla. Antimonium Crud, however Pulsatilla will be mild generally, weepy, and you'll feel quite sympathetic towards them.

DP: A child needing Antimonium Crud is extremely irritable and has an aversion to being touched or looked at. They also have an unusual craving for cucumbers. I have actually seen this in a child of one of my patients. It's her fourth baby and she does a lot of at home prescribing, so there's been very little occasion for me to even see this baby. So it was the first time I'd actually seen him in person, lots of photos. And I looked at him, he






took one look at me, scrunched up his face and just shrieked, and turned his head away. And apparently, this is how he is with most everybody at the hockey rink, in town, shopping for groceries. He's in an attractive little child, and of course, you want to just go and say, "coo-chi-coo", and they fall apart. These are children who need Antimonium Crud. And all I did was ask her, "Does he eat cucumbers?" And she said, "Oh my goodness!" She said, "If I want to keep him happy, I just stick a bowl of those little miniature cucumbers in front of him and he eats those all up.”

DP: Here we go with our Arsenicum Album. This is a remedy that you will use many times, in many different situations when these general symptoms of Arsenicum are there. There will be extreme restlessness. They won't be able to sit still. Even if they can't move because they're so nauseous, you will see almost like the eye is darting around, a lot of anxiety, fear of the dark, fear of death. They might want to be in the same room as you. So you're trying to make dinner and there's no way they're going to be in a room they can't see you, they're going to want somebody nearby. Often, there will be vomiting and diarrhea together. This is the child where you've got them on the toilet and it's coming out both ends at the same time, and you barely get the waste basket underneath them before "up it comes." You can also think of a Arsenicum Album with food poisoning as one of your first go-to remedies. Typically Arsenicum is worst at midnight. If you think about... You go out for dinner at 6 PM, six hours later is when food poisoning will hit, which makes it a perfect opportunity to try your Arsenicum Album.

DP: There is a thirst for frequent sips of cool water and it might get vomited right up, or with Arsenicum, they're very chilly with burning pains. They want a lot of heat on the pains, but they'll also want warm drinks. A child will feel quite chilly, and often worse after midnight around 2 to 3 AM, anywhere from midnight to 3 AM.

DP: Bryonia, this is a remedy absolutely you need in your home medicine kit, in your family's homeopathic medicine kit. Bryonia, grumpy bear or Bryonia are the two names for it. All the complaints are made worse for any motion, they're going to lie completely still. It is very different from a child who needs Arsenicum, they'll be very, very restless. They'll be a lot of dryness and thirst for large amounts of water all at once. Bryonia is the hots plant, and if you see one in nature or if you plant one, it loves dry soil and you soak it with water in intervals. So this is that doctrine of signatures, where sometimes what is characteristic about the plant or the substance is actually a part of the remedy symptom picture. This child will want to be left alone, they don't want to be disturbed. Where everything gets made worse for motion, so the diarrhea or the vomiting, every time they move, they're either going to want to go to the bathroom and vomit or stool. So in the same way that the physical symptom is worse, the general symptom of they are worse if they are being fussed over, they're going to be quite crappy with you about it actually and, "Just leave me alone."






DP: They could be a bitter taste in the mouth, they may or may not be able to describe that to you, and like Pulsatilla, they're worse for fatty or rich foods. Ipecacuanha or Ipeca or Ipecac, you may see the label by any one of those names, in pharmacies. This is an over the counter medication that is sold to make you vomit. So homeopathically, like cures like, we use homeopathic Ipeca if somebody is vomiting all the time, and it's continual nausea and vomiting that is not made better by throwing up or by being sick. This would be like morning sickness where the mom vomits, and vomits and she stops vomiting because there is nothing left to throw up, and the nausea is still there and they absolutely don't feel better for having thrown up at all. This might be an indication for Ipecac. It's extreme nausea, usually worse after eating. Now if you remember, Antimonium Crud had the sick white-coated tongue; Ipecac, check the tongue. If it's clean or pink, this is how you're going to tell whether your child or adult or you need Antimonium crud or Ipecac.

DP: If it's clean with the nausea and vomiting, chances are good it's going to be Ipecac that you're going to want to use. There's possibly going to be colicky or griping pains around the navel, and quite possibly vomiting after coughing, and you can think of whooping cough with that. For those of you who are interested twice a year I offer "Vaccine Free Now What?" course, and we talk about all the infectious diseases, illnesses in childhood where vaccination is offered as prevention. Sometimes parents are choosing to be vaccine free, but sometimes vaccination has been a choice taken away because of vaccine injury. We cover all of the diseases with homeopathic remedies. So, whooping cough, sometimes for some of the children with this cough, they cough and cough and cough, and it ends up in vomiting. If it makes them feel not so much better, you can think of Ipecac. Now, it's not on your PowerPoint presentation, but Ipecac often has concomitant symptom and "concomitant" simply means at the same time as.

DP: Ipecac has this very odd symptom of a nose bleed with whatever ailment that the person might have, so it's possible with this kind of vomiting and nausea that there is a nose bleed as well and you will know that that is an indication for homeopathic Ipecac. Nux Vomica is absolutely one of your homeopathic medicine cabinet remedies for your kit. Nux Vomica is often thought of as the hangover remedy, is especially when indicated when there has been... You take a drink at night to settle down and in the morning, you need to get going, so you have caffeinated coffee, and gosh, you don't have time to stop for lunch you grab a fast food meal and you get a bit of indigestion for that, so you take some antacids. And then you have a headache by the end of the day from stress, so you pop a couple Tylenol or headache medication and then you come home, you need to unwind, so you have a drink.

DP: This is the situation for Nux Vomica, very high stress, very irritable, these are road






rage people. But if you have vomiting and nausea in somebody who is extremely irritable, has been over eating. So, seasonal Christmas, family celebrations, partying. These are sometimes indications if there's vomiting and nausea the next day. Often a lack of appetite. And the child, this is what makes Nux Vomica characteristic, they feel like they would like to vomit but they can't, so this would be a gag-y child and there are just not vomiting at all. There are very, very chilly, very similar to Arsenicum that way. Arsenicum will likely be more restless and more fearful, fearful of death whereas Nux Vomica will just be completely irritable, very cranky, very short fuse, might even have some rage or temper tantrum even though they're feeling vomit-y and nauseous.

DP: Phosphorus. Phosphorus is often used in childhood. If you go to powersofhomeopathy.com, use the search box within the website, and Google "phosphorus." What will come up are a couple of issues on influenza. With one of the influenza newsletters, I included a handout on phosphorus. It's quite complete. I put together a lot of sources for information where you might not have access to certain reference books. But it covers the fever, it covers the cough, and I believe also the vomiting and nausea symptoms. So, every week I publish a newsletter. I keep up with what's happening in the news around the world, and you'll find lots of tips and remedies you can add to Your Family's Homeopathic Medicine Cabinet with instructions on how to use them.

DP: So, phosphorus is, you're going to use it more than once. There's a thirst for ice-cold water. There may even be a thirst for ice cream. And as weird as it sounds, as counterintuitive as it sounds, especially when there's so many of us being careful about being casein-free or dairy-free with our children, what you will find is that actually ice cream will make them feel better in general and will make the complaint feel better. I have had people with sore throats and said, "Oh, yeah, I eat a ton of ice cream." Or "All I want is a milkshake when I have a sore throat." So, there will be this craving for ice cold water. What will happen now is that as soon as that ice-cold water hits the stomach, it warms up and then up it comes again.

DP: This is also an indication... I'm adding a few things here. Because sometimes from general anaesthetic post surgery or even local anaesthetic after your dental appointment, you can feel nauseous and feel like vomiting, just to get rid of the toxins that go with the anaesthetic. And you crave the cold water, it will do the same thing. So, phosphorus sometimes can be used post surgery or post dental work, and it will help clear out the anaesthetic very quickly, and especially if these phosphorus symptoms are there. Like Arsenicum, there's going to be burning pains. And contrary to Arsenicum, which might be irritable and fearful, phosphorus will have tremendous number of fears, but they will want company. They'll want somebody to actually be touching or rubbing or... They just love a lot of love and attention. So, these will be your indications for







vomiting and nausea where you will need... Phosphorus will be the remedy that you go to.

DP: Pulsatilla, this is another one, an absolute must in your home kit. I teach about it in the Vaccine Free: Now What? course, Pulsatilla will cover a large number of infectious illnesses like chicken pox, measles, Rubella, where the symptom picture agrees. Even mumps. So, the Pulsatilla child, they'll vomit after eating fat-rich foods, ice cream or fruit. This is going to be your child where normally you don't have those kinds of foods at home. But you indulge them, they go to a birthday party, they have hotdogs, they have butter icing, they're eating cake and cookies and ice cream, maybe pepperoni pizza, things that you don't usually have. And you go to pick them up, and they say, "I don't feel well. Don't feel well. Can you put the air conditioning on?" Or they want the window rolled down. It's simply because they need the cooler air, they need the fresh air. There is no thirst at all whatsoever for a child needing Pulsatilla. They might, but it's pretty rare.

DP: Like Bryonia, they'll have that bitter taste in the mouth. And the Pulsatilla child, unlike Bryonia, will be shy, want some affection, sort of like phosphorus, but you will feel very sympathetic towards him. So, you want to avoid any of those fatty foods. So, even if it's an adult with vomiting and nausea, and it's been after, say, a fatty pepperoni pizza... I actually had a pulled pork pizza one time, and it tasted delicious, I'll tell you, I had the most terrible nausea. I couldn't throw up. But it wasn't Nux Vomica I needed, I took a little bit of Pulsatilla, and it completely turned it around. So, bacon even and pork for Pulsatilla, especially if it's fatty can create symptoms of vomiting and nausea for them.

DP: Silicea or Silica, this is a remedy you can also get in tissue salt format like the Calc phos, Mag phos or Ferrum phos. This is the child that will throw up breast milk and it's projectile vomiting. It's almost specific. These will be very... How shall I say it with these children? They're very refined-featured children. They might even look a little bit older, not so much baby-ish. But if they're bringing up breast milk or have an aversion to breast milk, or they're projectile vomiting after breast milk, it's possible that they will need some Silica or Silicea, is the other way it's pronounced sometimes.

DP: Veratrum Album is a remedy that is often used in flu situations. It might not be a remedy you use very often, but the symptoms are so characteristic for Veratrum. If you see these in a person, Veratrum's going to be the only remedy that's likely to help. Its the vomiting and diarrhoea together which you might think of Arsenicum Album. Veratrum, like our Arsenicum, is very very cold, but what is going to be very strange, rare and peculiar is that Veratrum will be having a cold sweat, especially on the forehead. This will be your telltale. And it's not on your PowerPoint, even through






Veratrum is very chilly they will want cold drinks and there's a lot of weakness with the Veratrum.

DP: That's pretty much it for the nausea and vomiting, and that will also cover car sickness or sea sickness. There are two other remedies, they're not on the PowerPoint but you can look them up. Cocculus and Theridion. Cocculus is a plant remedy, and it... You can also need Cocculus if you've for nausea and vomiting, and maybe some vertigo and dizziness from taking care of a sickly child or a sickly parent for a very long time. It's called "night-watching" in homeopathy. Theridion is a spider remedy, there's tremendous sensitivity to sounds and noise, and there's a lot of dizziness as well with this nausea and vomiting.

DP: The other remedy to think of with sea sickness is Tabacum. And Tabacum, somebody who needs Tabacum, you'll see it in a number of formulation combination homeopathic remedies for travel sickness, and its characteristic symptom is better for fresh air. So these will be the people not lying down in the little room that you're given, that would be a Bryonia indication, just laying there and not wanting to move. But they're up on deck. And even through there's a lot of waves and stuff, they need the fresh air, so that somebody needs Tabacum with that. So those are your three remedies for sea sickness: Cocculus, Theridion and Tabacum.

DP: The next common situation I wanted to talk to you about, in a family, going from babyhood through to childhood, thrush and teething. It's also sometimes called “dentition." Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of yeast. It's a type of fungus called Candida albicans. And there's been a lot of awareness since probably the '80s, the '70s and '80s, with hypoglycemia, low blood sugar and Candida. Candida can also lead to vaginal yeast infections, diaper rashes and oral thrust. I actually did some chelation therapy for myself, two years ago now, and I got terrible... It wasn't thrush... But I got cold sores and some herpes kinds of things while I was detoxing, it was very uncomfortable. So some of the remedies you can use for thrust, you can use also for herpes or that kind of overgrowth with chelation.

DP: Sometimes there can be an overgrowth of Candida and fungus, thrush, when you've been on a course of antibiotics, or baby has been put on antibiotics. And it just sets up a continual cycle until you can break that cycle, and homeopathy can be very good for that. Most of us naturally, including infants, have Candida in our mouths and in our digestive tract. It's just considered normal growth. The amount that we have in our system is controlled by a healthy immune system and some good bacteria.

DP: So when we have antibiotics, most of us know that now, it destroys, the antibiotics destroy all the good gut bacteria, that whole little microbiome gets disrupted, and what






grows instead is an overgrowth of Candida. So if the immune system is weakened... And medicines can do that, antibiotics, chemotherapy can do that, chelation can do that... Then we can have this overgrowth. It's just an opportunity for the Candida to grow. We have more toxins in our body, and they go, "Oh, more to eat" and then they start reproducing. The kidshealth.org website is really an excellent resource and information source for you, for signs, symptoms, and what to expect if you go to see your doctor, how things are treated conventionally. Sometimes they also give some common sense kinds of suggestions as well which are very good. They're not a homeopathic site but you get really good information there.

DP: There are thrush remedies to think of... Oh, just before I get into the remedies, one of the situations that can get set up fairly quickly is a breastfeeding mom who gets mastitis, is given an antibiotic, and then with the antibiotic then the baby develops thrush and they keep giving it back and forth to each other. Or the baby has thrush, for whatever reasons, there may be something has happened at birth where there's been trauma or stress, and then the baby's thrush... The baby latches on. And in those first few days of breastfeeding, sometimes your nipples can be very very tender, and bleed or have small cuts on them until you've toughened a little bit.

DP: So, sometimes that baby's thrush can infect the mom, and then you've got this cycle set up. And antibiotics won't necessarily help. You'll probably be offered nystatin. Homeopathy will be very helpful to break that cycle between breastfeeding mom and baby. That's the remedies is for thrush. Antimonium crud, we talked about a little bit with the nausea and vomiting. So, here's one other use for it. And again, you'll see this thick, milky white coating on the tongue, and this baby will be irritable and does not want to be looked at or touched. In an older child, they might say, "They're looking at me. Tell them not to look at me." Or they will scowl and look away. You will often see Antimonium crud in combination remedies for thrush. There are formulations just for thrush.

DP: I did have an incident of somebody calling. She was very good at home prescribing, but she got stuck and her daughter had been diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease. I just didn't know what I was dealing with. I was very new in practice. So, I looked it up, and I repertorized. I looked up the symptoms. And what she actually needed was Antimonium tart and not the crud. And how you can differentiate between crud and tart... The Antimonium tart craves apples or apple juice. So, the combination formulation was helpful, but only to a point. This daughter's... These sores inside her mouth were preventing her from breastfeeding even, so getting the nutrition from the mom. And the first thing to clear up when she took the Antimonium tart was the sores in the mouth and she was able to breastfeed. And she went on to recover quite well. You'll see the link in the PowerPoint handout to the newsletter that I wrote. It's called "Spotty Fevers."







DP: The next remedy, Arsenicum Album, which you're going to have in your home kit already for flus, for colds, for nausea and vomiting, for food poisoning. You can start to see how the remedy picture overall if it fits whatever the symptoms are, it doesn't matter what the illness is. Their thrush, if you look inside the mouth, will be raw, red or bluish almost, and burning ulcers. And they're going to be better for warm drinks. So, this is what's unusual again, to have burning pains better with warmth or warm drinks. And the child will be restless, anxious, and crave company. So, where Antimonium crud will have the thick, milky white coating on the tongue, the Arsenicum will be raw, red or bluish. So, you are going to have to look inside the mouth and see what you see.

DP: Borax, this is the remedy that I used when I was going through chelation, and I had these tremendous sores inside of my mouth, this thrush. And you will often see Borax is one of the homeopathic remedies in a combination formulation. And it's a remedy that's used for both thrush and for teething, and especially marked for ulcers. There's a characteristic symptom of Borax, which is quite unusual, and it's a fear of downward motion. These are the babies that when you go to lay them down, they will startle and be quite frightened. Or these will be the children who don't want to slide fast down a slide. Or in an elevator, the drop really bothers them. There will be pain in the mouth when they're sucking or eating, and hot ulcers which might bleed.

DP: Kali Muriaticum, Kali Mur is a tissue salt. You could get it in a tissue salt potency. And white ulcers or thrush if there are no clear symptoms to guide you to one of the other remedies. So, very similar in some ways to the Mag phos, Ferrum phos, Calc phos that we talked about. This Kali Mur, you're just not sure, you can't really differentiate, no real characteristic symptoms, then you've got your Kali Mur tissue salt on hand. And the tongue may be patchy with grey or white coating at the base.

DP: Merc sol, this is homeopathic mercury or Merc vivus or Merc viv, Mercurius solubilis. These are all the same names. What will be characteristic for a child or adult who needs Merc Sol is a lot of drool or saliva. They'll even dribble on the pillow at night. Offensive breath, it'll be very stinky breath and very sore mouth. They might actually be worse during the night or in the evening, and be okay during the day. Now for some teething remedies. This is going to be a situation that you will be involved in. If you have more than one child, you just go with the first child from about age six months to 18 months, and then you're starting to get rest and you think about having another child, and then you start with it all over again. Homeopathy, many people have come to homeopathy through two remedies: Arnica for bumps, bruises and falls; and Chamomilla for teething or dentition.

DP: So, I did some research with teething, and if you read medical research, they will say that teething or dentition has nothing to do with fevers or sicknesses, but as a






parent, you know anecdotally that teething and fevers, and all the other upsets often go hand in hand. And for me, if you just think about it, of course the immune system is going to mount some kind of response, the gums are inflamed, so why wouldn't the body introduce a fever just to make sure that there's not going to be any infections while those teeth are trying to come through?

DP: So I took it from the kidshealth.org website, as kids begin teething, they might drool more and want to chew on things. For some babies, teething is painless. I have yet to meet a painless teether myself. Others may have brief periods of irritability while some may seem cranky for weeks with crying spells and disrupted sleep and eating patterns. Teething can be uncomfortable, but if your baby seems very fussy, talk to your doctor. Although tender and swollen gums could cause your baby's temperature to be a little higher than normal, teething doesn't usually cause high fever or diarrhea. So you think what you will on that one.

DP: Here are some remedies for teething or dentition. Aconite, extreme pain with great anxiety, restlessness, and often inflamed gums. The child may rub the gums with the fist to try and alleviate the pain, and they're worst for cold air or cold drinks. These children will typically wake up in the middle of the night, around midnight again with these kinds of pains. With aconite, it could be a sudden fever in the middle of the night with tremendous amount of dryness, irritability, and anxiousness.

DP: Chamomilla, this is the one along with arnica that brings more people to homeopathy than any other. Your child is whiny, irritable, stubborn and just plain miserable. These are the symptoms of Chamomilla and they almost so perfectly fit the situation in teething. This is why Chamomilla is going to work for 75% of the children, 75% of the time. They don't want to be bothered or even looked at. These are children who normally are pretty pleasant kids, but they will actually want to hit or strike. And the pains are unbearable, this is why they're doing what they're doing.

DP: Where Arnica will say, "I'm fine, I'm okay, there's nothing wrong with me," even though they're seriously not well or had a big injury, Chamomilla, which is in the same family, will just be so exquisitely sensitive to the pain. This is what the anger and striking out is all about. The child will be capricious. They'll want up and then they'll want down. Then they'll ask for something then they don't want that thing, then they want something else. They'll be quiet as long as they're being carried. One cheek will be hot and red, usually the side of the tooth is coming through on, and the other cheek pale, you actually will see this in teething babies.

DP: Loose stool is very characteristic and the stool may be like chopped eggs and spinach, frothy green. It just means that there's some digestive problems going on.







These are the children who might have difficulty breathing or have a cough with their teething, and they'll be worse at night. Actually, Chamomilla can be worse any time of day. With a Chamomilla child you probably will enter into a Chamomilla state very quickly and just want nothing to do with this child.

DP: Most teething formulations have Chamomilla in them. The Boiron formulation has Chamomilla in it. Now, again, Chamomilla, somebody will say, "Oh, try this Boiron teething product. It's fabulous, you'll love it, it'll work." And then it doesn't work for your child. Well, what's up with that? What's up with that is you may need to go go to a Hyland's formulation which contains Coffea, homeopathic coffee. Again, on my website, powersofhomeopathy.com. I've written more than one newsletter on teething that will give you more specific information as well. But Coffea is for teething of children who are nervous, excitable, they just get more and more ramped and revved, they can't go to sleep, and if they're verbal, they talk rapidly to the mother.

DP: And these are the children that are going to respond to those teething rings that you stick in the freezer or you... Elastic, an ice cube around a face cloth and hold it in the child's mouth, and this will numb the pain. This is the symptom that's characteristic of Coffea and will be characteristic of the child teething who needs Coffea. They will want these cold things in their mouth. The Hyland's teething formulation has Coffea in it. If you find the formulation with Chamomilla in it, does not work, then try the Coffea formulation.

DP: Occasionally, there will be children who start getting cavities as soon as they appear. The remedy you will need in that situation is Kreosotum. The child's restless, agitated, nothing satisfies, which you might think of Chamomilla. They've got inflamed spongy or bleeding gums, and they're in severe pain as well. If Chamomilla doesn't help, and then you start to notice that the teeth are decaying or turning black, you will will want to look at Kreosotum, plus you're on your way to the dentist. Sometimes these situations happen when there's a lot of stress in the family or if there has been a lot of stress during the pregnancy as well. Kreosotum will do some really good work. I don't know if it will help in terms of the adult teeth coming in healthy but it's worth a try.

DP: Merc Sol or Viv, same with the thrush, excessive salivation, a lot of drooling accompanied by offensive, bad breath and worse at night. Phytolacca is a remedy that you might think of with breastfeeding. It has an affinity to the glands and sometimes mastitis. Phytolacca is the remedy that is needed especially if there is hard swellings in the breast. Phytolacca for children who are teething. These are children with an irresistible desire to bite the teeth together. They'll bite and almost shake themselves. The teeth are clenched, the lips drawn down, and the jaw is firmly set. You can actually see them pull their chin down on the sternum, and they are actually better biting on







something hard. So if you've tried everything else, nothing's helping, and your infant or your child has these particular symptoms, consider Phytolacca, and especially if there's mastitis going on with a hard gland as well, these are the babies that are teething, and they bite down hard on the breast as well. My oldest son did that. I wish I'd known about Phytolacca then, but I didn't so there you go.

DP: Gaining from what I wish I had had. Now this is a situation I'm going to give you one more remedy that is likely not usually talked about. You won't usually find in remedies, Materia medica, in your book, but this is a situation where you will want to have a homeopath especially if the rash has become chronic, and or yeasty... Oh, sorry. We're moving into diaper rash. I did want to cover diaper rash. We're past the thrush and teething, and we're going to look at diaper rash. This is a chronic situation sometimes for infants, and especially, if the rashes have become chronic and or yeasty. You could think of some of the thrush remedies like Borax or Merc Sol if the symptom picture matches. In our Homeopathic Repertory, and that's the book that lists symptoms and remedies with each chapter representing a part of the body like the mind, head, abdomen, and you would find your diaper rash remedies in the rectum. I just wanted to give you an idea of the scope of homeopathic remedies and some homeopathic prescribing.

DP: So DPT which is the diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus vaccine. Sometimes it's indicated if diaper rash has started after that first series of vaccinations that includes diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. And it's eczema with or without itching and diaper rash or eruptions under the skin. This is what we call an etiology. It began... Never been well since. The other remedies, I'll just introduce you to. It will be on your PowerPoint for you to read at, are the bowel nosodes. There's a bit of history with the bowel nosodes. They were first introduced by Dr. Edward Bach or Bach who is famous for the Bach Flower Essences, likely Rescue Remedy is the one you know the best. In the 1940s and '50s, this is when penicillin was first sold as a drug. There was a lot of research, interest and curiosity about the bowel and auto-intoxication from the colon, and how the body got rid of toxins.

DP: The bowel nosodes are being used more frequently, often in the recovery of children diagnosed on the spectrum. C. Difficile is a persistent infection of the bowel that is from overuse of antibiotics, and what they're doing now are what are called fecal transplants, stool transplants. So what they're finding is when they do these fecal transplants that the bowel is then repopulated with the bacteria that is needed to have the bowels function properly without these autoimmune, auto-intoxication, inflammatory bowel diseases.

DP: There is a really important place right now for bowel nosodes. So I just mentioned






that so that you know some of the options that are available to you as homeopathic remedies. The other homeopathic remedy for diaper rash that might be considered, and again, you would have to consult your homeopath or naturopath is Medorrhinum. It's what we call a nosode. The last few slides that you have, the last seven slides, I've included a suggested remedy kit, potency that you might need for it, and then specifically for coughs, colds, flu, teething, digestive complaints, another list for that. I also recommend a set of homeopathic tissue salts or Biochemic tissue salts. Miranda Castro's article on her website, mirandacastro.com, is excellent. Anything on her website, she's got tremendous resources there.

DP: I have included a list of resources, places that are reputable where you can go and read about either homeopathy or an infectious illness. The other article I've included for you is "The Physiology of Fever" article by Mark Broom, and these are the recommendations that are being made by medical doctors. Please, if you can, allow your child to have a fever, this is so important and to refrain from using Tylenol, ibuprofen, paracetamol, Panadol, these are all product names for anything that suppresses a fever.

DP: Again, with the 12-week Vaccine Free: Now What? course that I offer, you will be able to get the information that you need on fever and the immune systems. Dana Ullman, Miranda Castro, both terrific homeopaths, writers, her articles, his articles, books, terrific information, all free on the internet. Homeopathy Plus will be another website you can go to. There are tutorials, I believe it's Fran Sheffield's website that she has initiated. You can learn so much there.

DP: Homeoint.org, the English version, there are free homeopathic books online, I think you have to pay for a membership now, but it's like your own online homeopathic library and so much good information there. You don't have to go very far to learn about homeopathy. Then I would recommend any acute care courses that you can take, and for some of you you will be absolutely be enthralled with this system of medicine because of the philosophy and how it works, and the remedies. You will go from an acute care course and then you will want to study to become a homeopath. The world needs a lot of homeopaths right now, more and more children are being diagnosed on the spectrum, there's more and more chronic illness.

DP: So my job is to teach you how to use your acute remedies in your home medicine cabinet so that you can help when your kids are sick and you're just making their system stronger by giving them homeopathic remedies that, in illnesses where there's a beginning a middle and an end, but for all of these children who have suffered intoxication, intoxification, who are very toxic either because of chemicals in vaccines or foods, these children need help with chronic illnesses. And you may want to study and
