TRANSCRIPT
Salt Spring Islanders continued to donate generously to their community foundation in 2012, and all of us on the Foundation’s Board of Directors are proud to have earned this much-valued ongoing support. Our job is to carefully steward the funds entrusted to us and put them to work in the community in the most responsible and effective way possible. I cannot say enough about the commitment and hard work of our growing team of board and committee members who make this happen.
Our 2012 Community Needs Survey confirmed that affordable housing and community health issues remain uppermost in islanders’ minds. We are working with service providers to see how we can be more proactive in meeting these crucial needs. While the Foundation is committed to addressing the major issues challenging island residents, we also continue to support the broadest possible range of community projects.
We sincerely thank our many donors and supporters. Your generous contributions make sure that Salt Spring remains a livable and vital community for all its residents. We especially want to thank those who have set up special funds within the Foundation and those who remember us in their wills.
With your support, the Foundation granted over $140,000 to local charities in 2012. Much work remains to be done, but we are inspired by our dedicated donors and volunteers. Together we can make Salt Spring Island one of Canada’s most caring communities.

“Although now living in Victoria, I still feel connected to Salt Spring after 27 years of being involved in
community services for women and youth. As an early SWOVA board
member, I was keenly aware of unmet needs, and I am now pleased to be able to provide financial support
towards the Foundation’s goals by setting up a Field of Interest Fund.”
—Bev Unger
“What better way is there for a Salt Springer to give back to the
community than to remember the Salt Spring Island Foundation when
making a will? A bequest to the Foundation benefits so many worthy
causes and is a way of spreading some good throughout our community.
I am happy that my late wife Margaret remembered the
Foundation in this way.” —Basil Franey

Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue SocietyThe 2012
Community Needs Survey
In the spring of 2012 the Foundation conducted an online survey to ask islanders what they thought were the most critical issues facing our community. We received responses from 446 island residents, aged 18 to over 75, and from all areas of Salt Spring.
What did you tell us?The top five critical needs not being met are housing (65.9%), community health services (52.2%), poverty issues (50.6%), agriculture and food supply (40.8%), and children’s, youth and family services (39.8%).
Shortage of funds and lack of willing volunteers are the most significant barriers facing island non-profit organizations.
We should continue to support a wide range of local organizations.
How is the Foundation responding to the survey results? We are taking a proactive role in assisting community non-profit organizations to overcome the barriers they face.
We are continuing to look for opportunities to bring local groups together to stimulate new ideas to address community problems.
We are joining community foundations across Canada in the Smart & Caring Communities initiative.
“Keep up the good work. Keep a balance of giving funding to where
it is most needed and spreading funding across all good causes.”
—survey respondent
“Having been fortunate enough to see the Salt Spring Island community grow over the past 24 years, we really appreciate the Foundation’s support of a wide variety of community needs and activities, including social services
for young and old, affordable
housing, the arts, environmental conservancy, educational programs for
schools, and more. It is
reassuring to know that the Foundation is committed to responsible stewardship and distribu-tion of funds to worthy organizations.”

Ways to Give
Special Thanks
n Milestone Funds help build the Community Endowment Fund and are suitable for donors who prefer to have the Foundation make granting decisions on their behalf. Create a Milestone Fund, previously called a Named Fund, with your donation (or accumulated dona–tions) or bequest of $5,000 or more. The fund may be in your name or the name of someone you wish to honour.
n Field of Interest Funds enable donors to specify a particular field of interest to which the income of their fund will be directed, for example, social services, children and youth, arts and culture, or the environment. A Field of Interest Fund can be established by your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $15,000 or more and can be in the name of your choice.
n Advised Funds are useful options for those who wish to specify a particular island charity (or charities) as the recipient(s) of the annual distributions made possible by their funds. It’s possible to create an Advised Fund with your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $25,000 or more. As with the fund types above, your Advised Fund can be in the name of your choice.
n Partnership Funds allow donors to work with the Foundation to decide how best to enrich the quality of life on Salt Spring. Partnership funds may be estab-lished with your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $50,000 or more. Donors can meet with a Foundation representative each year to provide direction about the distributions made possible by their funds.
