“Can you hear me? Stay with me and focus on my face. You are in the Emergency Room at Delta Hospital. We are here to help you”.

These are the words you might hear if you are having a heart attack.

Heart problems are serious and you’ll never know how terrifying it can be until it happens to you.

Likewise, until you need cardiac services, it’s hard to understand how important it is to have local, state-of-the-art care right here in Delta.

Last year 3,809 people came to Delta Hospital for cardiac treatment and diagnosis. It is vital to have the best technology and equipment available to our physicians so we can ensure that you go home to your family.

Every day, at least five people visit our Emergency Department in car-

diac distress and six visit our Cardiac Clinic for diagnosis. We at Delta Hos-pital recognize the enormous impact this has on our community.

“Time is essential when treating someone with heart distress”, says Dr. Robert Shaw, Chief Internist at Delta Hospital. “The amazing sup-port of this community has allowed us to continually provide the best care possible to these critical pa-tients”.

It is people like you, our donors, who have made this level of care possible and helped our patients go home healthy.

Like Daphne, a young, healthy mother and resident of Delta. She was enjoying one of her regular runs through Tsawwassen, when suddenly, she stopped running and collapsed. Daphne’s running part-

ners quickly administered CPR and called 911. Within minutes Daphne arrived at Delta Hospital and it was determined that she had experienced a sudden cardiac arrest.

She was immediately stabilized and when it was safe, she was trans-ferred to another facility for further observation.

It was the quick work of our staff as well as the sophisticated equip-ment that ensured Daphne’s positive outcome.

Five months after suffering the sudden cardiac arrest, Daphne is back at home with her family, back to her regular routines, and back to running.

“I know that Delta Hospital saved me”, says Daphne. “I would not be here today without their quick response and life-saving skills and

expertise. I just can’t say enough about how grateful I am to have this hospital so close to home”.

With the help of donors and the community, we are building the best possible Cardiac Care at Delta Hos-pital so more patients, like Daphne, make it back to their families.

In 2012, the Delta Hospital Foundation created the Cardiac Care Fund. This fund supports patients at Delta Hospital who undergo cardiac-

related testing, monitoring, and treatment by purchasing state-of-the-art, life-saving equipment.

With generous support from you, we were able to grow this fund to over $444,000. Among this year’s firsts, the Foundation purchased a Cardiac Care package which included a $120,000 highly specialized por-table ultrasound.

This new ultrasound provides our medical staff with detailed, high-def-

inition images of the heart, right at the patient’s bedside. This allows for faster, more-precise diagnosis with less stress on the patient.

Cardiac Care Clinic

Heart disease is serious and requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. As Kathy Haslet, a Delta Hospital Cardiology Technician, explains, “most of the time, it’s a life or death situation”.

The good news is that heart dis-ease is both preventable and man-ageable, if you take the right steps. Things like what you eat, how much you exercise, and quitting smoking are all factors that can help you keep your heart healthy. That is where Delta Hospital’s heart related pro-grams get involved.

The Cardiac Clinic, where Kathy works, saw over 2200 patients last year and that number is expected to grow to 2,700 by 2015. It is the job of those who work in the clinic to investigate what might be the cause of shortness of breath, palpitations or chest pains in a patient.

Most people who enter the Car-

diac Clinic fear the worst. The clinic often sees patients with noticeable symptoms of cardiovascular disease or abnormal heart rhythms. But sometimes they see patients who may not feel any obvious symptoms and are actually on the brink of a heart attack.

“We have a great program here. Heart disease can affect anyone and what we do is lifesaving work”, Kathy reminds us. “If we can help someone before they suffer a heart attack or stroke, we’ve made a difference”.

It is because of you that we have been able to purchase new and in-novative equipment for your heart which helps more patients go home healthy.

When you have an issue with your heart, it’s important to have an outstanding medical team to re-spond. Whether it’s Dr. Shaw in the emergency room, the internist in our Rapid Access Clinic, or Kathy and the team of cardiology technicians at Delta Hospital, you have access to some of the finest medical profes-sionals that are supported by the most up-to-date equipment.

This past fall I was pleased to begin my term as Chair of Delta Hos-pital Foundation. I offer my sincere gratitude to my predecessor, Lois Wilkinson, who will remain on the Board as Past Chair, and to my fellow Board members for their continued efforts on behalf of the Foundation and the community.

I am honoured to be taking on my new role at a very exciting time for both Delta Hospital and the Foun-dation. In the fall of 2012 Fraser Health began working on a business case for the implementation of the recently completed Delta Hospital High Level Master Plan. We now have a vision for three phases of development and renewal for our community hospital over the next 20 years.

It has been a great year for the continuing partnership between the community of Delta and Delta Hospi-tal. The most rewarding aspect of my time on the Delta Hospital Founda-tion board is being a first-hand wit-ness to the direct impact our commu-nity’s efforts have in our hospital.

Your donations can help in more dramatic fashion at times such as helping to purchase a $138,000 cardiac care package that includes a high-definition ultrasound and several heart monitors. The addition of this equipment allows over 2,200 patients to stay in our community for diagnosis and monitoring and avoid the stress of delayed and distant care.

On the other hand, something as seemingly simple as a special-ized mattress can make so much difference to some of our residents in Mountain View Manor who are forced to spend extended periods in bed.

We saw another important development in the future of Delta Hospital Foundation this past year when Veronica Carroll joined the team as its new Executive Director in July 2012. Veronica joined us at a very busy time and the Board and I offer our congratulations to Veronica for her great work in meeting and engaging her new community as we work together to lead the hospital and Foundation towards a bigger and healthier future.

This year marked the Founda-tion’s 25th anniversary of support-ing Delta Hospital in its delivery of outstanding health care. Our past has been marked by the generous support of our donors and partners. Our future depends on that continu-ing relationship. The generosity you have shown, from our modest begin-nings in 1988, to a year where both our Gala and Golf Tournament raised record amounts, is key to provid-ing leading surgical, residential, and cardiac care.

With your support, I am confident Delta Hospital Foundation will con-tinue to provide the best care pos-sible for those we love; our families, our neighbors, and our community.

Thank you all.

Throughout their almost 70 years of marriage, Charles Simser and his wife Myrtle worked hard and had a lot of fun, but always with those they loved most. The joys of spending time with friends and family was a gratifying reward for a life well lived.

The couple married sixty-eight years ago in Saskatchewan and was together until Myrtle’s death in 2010. While Charles, known as Chuck by those that knew him, spent his free time on the golf course, Myrtle dedi-cated her time to gardening.

Family and friends were very important to the couple, especially when they made the move from Saskatchewan to Tsawwassen in the mid-1960s. They were always there to host holiday get-togethers and lend a hand when needed.

When Myrtle began to have heart troubles and required additional medical care, she moved into Moun-tain View Manor. Even though the couple no longer lived in the same home, Chuck visited Myrtle every day while she was at Delta Hospital. He didn’t let weather, or appointments, keep him from a visit with the love of his life. The couple was grateful for the extraordinary care, help, and

compassion Myrtle received from the dedicated medical staff at Delta Hospital.

Today, in return, the Simser’s are helping out so many others in their community who also call Mountain View Manor their home thanks to their Legacy Gift to Delta Hospital Foundation in 2012.

The Simser’s gift to the hospital enabled the purchase of 40 Isoflex mattresses for the residents.

Without thinking, everyone makes hundreds of little changes in our posture while sitting in a chair, talking on the phone, or even sleep-ing. These minor shifts in our weight help us to alleviate pressure points while we go about our daily activities. However, someone who suffers from diseases like Alzheimer’s or demen-tia, like our residents in Mountain View Manor, may be less aware of when these harmful pressure points are becoming uncomfortable. An Isoflex mattress provides pressure relief by evenly distributing weight throughout the surface.

The incredible kindness of the Simser’s allows us to provide the best care and comfort for our residents in their twilight years.

“One of the reasons the couple had been so generous with Delta Hospital is the care they received throughout their life in this commu-nity”, said Pieter H., Charles’ cousin and close friend. “Over the years, the medical staff cared for both Chuck and Myrtle – at one time simultane-ously”. The care they received was extraordinary, and they wanted to recognize that by including a gift to Delta Hospital Foundation in their Will.

This gift to the hospital repre-sents a long history of community involvement and participation for the couple. They were both long-time members of their Rotary Club, Church, and active volunteers with the Salvation Army. As well, Chuck golfed, with his Beach Grove Golf Club membership, and ice-skated up into his 90s. Through it all, they always recognized that their active life and community’s stability was enriched by having quality health care close to home. As Pieter H. put it, “They were so fortunate to have a first-class facility with modern equip-ment and quality doctors in the com-munity when they needed it most”.

The Simser’s were good neigh-

bours, good friends, and great members of our community. Their decision to include Delta Hospital Foundation in their Will is a lasting legacy to the community that they loved so much.

After your first year with the Foundation, what are your observations?

Coming to the Delta Hospital Foundation, I had heard about the community’s unwavering com-mitment to our hospital. Not only did this prove to be true, but I was touched with how warm and welcom-ing everyone in Delta has been.

We have a great hospital. It’s been my privilege over the last year to ready our Foundation and our com-munity as we move forward and ad-dress the growing health care needs in Delta.

What were the Foundation’s major activities this past year?

Over the past year, the Founda-tion reached some amazing mile-stones and we should all be excited

about what that will mean for health care in Delta.

First, in partnership with Fraser Health, the High Level Master Plan was approved and a business case for phase one of the plan was presented to the Ministry of Health. This is a very exciting time for Delta Hospital as we look to the future of what this facility can give back to our commu-nity.

Second, as 2012-2013 came to a close, we completed our 25th year as an organization. It was exhilarating for me, as I as learned about all of the amazing accomplishments this community has rallied around and helped achieve at Delta Hospital. Delta has enabled the best in patient care at this facility and I’m excited to see what the next 25 years has in store.

Finally, on the eve of our 25th anniversary, we felt it was time to re-fresh our brand to better encompass our history, the role the Foundation and the hospital play in the com-

munity, and the amazing support we see from our donors. So we launched a new brand in March that is more than just a logo; it’s the story of who we are, where we have been, and where we are going.

What does the future of Delta Hospital look like?

The future for Delta Hospital

looks healthier than ever. I am proud and excited to say that the Founda-tion and the hospital are about to embark on the largest investment in infrastructure since it was built in 1980. Once again, our community will help transform Delta Hospital where the level and availability of care exceeds all expectations.

Stop by my office, call, or email me at [email protected] to find out how you can help be a part of our exciting future at Delta Hospital.

a year in Review

Q & a with veronica Carroll mBa CFRe, executive Director, Delta Hospital Foundation

We live in a community that is aging – the oldest in Fraser Health. The truth is that an aging population will require more extensive healthcare services as we all begin to face a variety of medical issues.

It is you and the needs of our community that sit at the heart of Delta Hospital’s High Level Master Plan. The plan was created out of a two-year partnership between Delta Hospital Foundation and Fraser Health, and through countless consultations with our hospital team, our community, and health-care experts.

Our new brand conveys the caring nature of our neighbours who come together from three very distinct areas but who are, with-out a doubt, a community with a deep pas-sion and commitment to our hospital.

The heart is the centre of our health, and our lives. And like the heart, the hospital is the centre of our community. Young and old, male or female, all incomes and ethnic groups, at some point or another, we will all need it.

Since our beginning in 1988, the commu-nity of Delta has embraced and supported the Foundation and enabled us to grow.

Over the last 25 years, and with the sup-port of this community, the Foundation has had tremendous success.

Working with our community, we have en-abled the best in patient care at our hospital by asking: “will it make a difference?” And this is the philosophy we will take forward into the next 25 years.

Delta Hospital has a unique his-tory. It’s a hospital that was built by the community, for the community through a grass roots movement that has stayed the essence of its commitment from day one.

Since opening the acute care hos-pital in 1980, we have added a new emergency department, equipped a third operating room, created a separate endoscopy suite, and pur-chased a state of the art CT scanner. Other patient comforts have been added such as the “healing garden” and the “forest for the future”. All of this has been completed with com-munity funds, donated by individu-als, companies, service groups and other foundations. Delta Hospital is truly a “community” hospital.

In 2010 Delta Hospital Foun-dation met with Fraser Health to discuss the development of a long range plan for the hospital – the High Level Master Plan. The Foundation was more than pleased

to participate in this exercise, as this further reinforced the perma-nence of our hospital. The Plan is designed to take us through the next 20 years and it solidifies our vision of what is needed to support Delta Hospital in both the short and long term.

The Foundation was involved in the High Level Master Planning process from start to finish, and the entire board of directors is confident that it is truly a plan for the future needs of our patients, medical staff and community.
