1. Keep It ExclusiveWant followers on Snapchat? Create content that’s just for Snapchat. If you share your story on Facebook or Twitter or give people the chance to go somewhere, they will go somewhere else. Don’t split your audience.

2. Make It InterestingWhen making snaps, you have to make sure you’re creating content that you’d like to watch. If you wouldn’t like to watch it on someone else’s story it shouldn’t be on yours. Ingredients of a compelling snap: fun, humorous, creative, exclusive, cool.

3. Be CreativeSnapchat offers plenty of tools for you to express yourself. Text, drawing tools, and lenses. If you’re going to use it, use it in a way that’s engaging for your audience. Use the coloring tools in a way that makes sense and enhances the Snap. If it looks like a horrible crayon accident, you should probably retake it. For Lenses, add something personal, something unique. With lenses anybody can puke rainbows, but what’s something that only you can add to that?

4. The Screenshot DilemmaCan you screenshot content from Snapchat? Depends. Brands have content that’s ready to go public and saved for prosperity, in fact they want you to save it and share it. Individuals, not so much. Part of the appeal of Snapchat is that the content disappears after a few seconds and self-destructs. It’s better to ask someone before just saving everything they send you, that way you don’t step on anyone’s toes.

5. Don’t Be A LurkerSnapchat lets users know who watches their story. So, it’s important to engage with people and reply when you have something to say about a particular snap.

6. ReciprocateSnapchat is a community of users and communities are built through reciprocity. If someone snaps you, snap them back. It’s just common courtesy. If someone watches your story, watch theirs and if you never want to see anything from someone, don’t add them, since you can’t reciprocate.

7. Vertical VideoTheatrical movies are shot horizontally for a horizontal screen. You wouldn’t watch a movie that’s been shot vertically and leaves black bars besides the footage, would you? By the same logic, the entire interface of Snapchat is designed to be vertical, and Snapping horizontally goes against every function in the app. Snapchat is mobile-first, film accordingly.

8. Make It InterestingJust like other social channels, a random picture of your lunch is not going to be very compelling. In fact, it may even make you lose some followers. Make it interesting, give it your own spin. Maybe add some dialogue, or give us some insight. Just a picture can be very boring, but a little extra goes a long way.

9. Nobody Likes RerunsListen, we know that video of your dog fighting with a plush toy on your public story is really cute. We saw it. If something is already in your story, there’s no need to send it to people individually.

10. Be Aware Of TimeSnaps you send to your friend last 1-10 seconds (you can tweak this in the settings), snaps you add to your story last for 24hrs. Keep that in mind when creating content. If you want someone to be able to view something more than once, it belongs in your story. If you want it to go away quickly, snap privately.

11. LinksYou can add text links on Snapchat, if you want people to find out more than you can say in 10 seconds, use them. Just know they’re not dynamic and will have to be manually entered outside of Snapchat. Consider bit.ly or other shorteners if your url is long. Tip: ask your followers to screen shot links so for easy reference.

12. Video WarningVideos on your story can be watched multiple times, so if people don’t have the volume up, it’s no big deal. Videos you send to individual people disappear after being seen once. So you might want to give people a warning to turn up the volume or get their earbuds.

12. Keep UpSnapchat doesn’t show the whole message log you have with a user so it’s important to keep up. If you snap someone, get a reply and you forgot what the original question was and reply with a “?”, that’s bad form. So if you start a conversation on Snapchat, pay attention. Tip: Hold the message to save it.

13. Emojis - What does It all Mean?Their is no secret hidden message in emojis, no hidden government conspiracy, and the truth to life in outer space is not hidden in that snap your girlfriend sent you with the smiling poop emoji, followed by a key and a dragon (or is it?). More than an actual message, emojis can be used to convey a feeling or compliment a scene. So they’re just there. Don’t overly read into what they mean, because the answer may often be “nothing, really”.

14. Be YouUnlike much of the content put out there on social, Snaps are best when they show the real you. Be vulnerable, be silly, be real. Your Snaps last 24 hours at most (if you include them in your story), so don’t put artificial pressure on yourself to share nothing but Gold Snaps. Have fun with it.
